For centuries Western socities insisted that women were only skirts & dresses, and long, often cumbersome and uncomfortable ones at that. Leave it to a national state of emergency, ie, war, to initiate change when women were called upon to fill manufacturing jobs of men to keep a nation running. First serving as utility, then morphing into a freeing fashion statement, pants sets from the 1940s are quite hard to find.
