Woodie King Jr. (July 27, 1937) is a director and producer of stage and screen, as well as the founding director of the New Federal Theatre in New York City.

He was born in Baldwin Springs, Alabama. He graduated high school in Detroit and worked at the Ford Motor Company there for three years. He worked for the City of Detroit as a draftsman. He earned an MFA at Brooklyn College.

He will join Mobilization for Youth, where he will spend the next five years working as the cultural director. He will find the New Federal Theatre and the National Black Touring Circuit in New York City, where he will be the producing director. He will produce shows both on and off-Broadway and will direct performances across the country in venues like the New York Shakespeare Festival, Cleveland Playhouse, Center Stage of Baltimore, and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre. His work will earn him numerous nominations and awards, including an NAACP Image Award for his direction of “Checkmates” and Audelco Awards for Best Director and Best Play for his production of “Robert Johnson: Trick The Devil.” He will receive an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement. He will have an honorary doctorate in humane letters conferred by Wayne State University and a doctorate of fine arts by the College of Wooster. In addition to his directing and producing of theater, he will find time to write extensively about it. He will contribute to numerous magazines, such as “Black World,” “Variety” and “The Tulane Drama Review,” and will write several books. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Maureen Paula O'Sullivan (17 May 1911 – 23 June 1998) was an Irish-American actress. She was best known for playing Jane Parker in the Tarzan series of films during the era of Johnny Weissmuller. In 2020, she was listed at number 8 on The Irish Times list of Ireland's greatest film actors.

O'Sullivan was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, in 1911, the daughter of Mary Eva Lovatt (née Frazer) and Charles Joseph O'Sullivan, an officer in the Connaught Rangers who served in World War I. Maureen returned to Boyle in 1988 to be honoured by the town. She attended a convent school in Dublin, then the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Roehampton (now Woldingham School), England. One of her classmates there was Vivian Mary Hartley, future Academy Award-winning actress Vivien Leigh. After attending finishing school in France, O'Sullivan returned to Dublin to work with the poor. In October 1929, she sailed to New York with her mother on the British steamer RMS Baltic, on the way to Hollywood to work for the Fox Film Corporation.

O'Sullivan's film career began when she met motion picture director Frank Borzage, who was doing location filming on Song o' My Heart (released in 1930) for 20th Century Fox. He suggested she take a screen test. She did and won a part in the movie, which starred Irish tenor John McCormack. She traveled to the United States to complete the movie in Hollywood. O'Sullivan appeared in six movies at Fox, then made three more at other movie studios.

In 1932, she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. After several roles there and at other movie studios, she was chosen by Irving Thalberg to appear as Jane Parker in Tarzan the Ape Man, opposite co-star Johnny Weissmuller. She was one of the more popular ingenues at MGM throughout the 1930s and appeared in a number of other productions with various stars. In all, O'Sullivan played Jane in six features between 1932 and 1942.

She was featured with William Powell and Myrna Loy in The Thin Man (1934) and played Kitty in Anna Karenina (1935) with Greta Garbo, Fredric March, and Basil Rathbone. After co-starring with the Marx Bros in A Day at the Races (1937), she appeared as Molly Beaumont in A Yank at Oxford (1938), which was written partly by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

She appeared in Pride and Prejudice (1940) with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, and supported Ann Sothern in Maisie Was a Lady (1941). After appearing in Tarzan's New York Adventure (1942), O'Sullivan asked MGM to release her from her contract so she could care for her husband, John Farrow, who had just left the Navy with typhoid. She retreated from show business, devoting her time to her family. In 1948, she re-appeared on the screen in The Big Clock, directed by her husband for Paramount Pictures. She continued to appear occasionally in her husband's movies and on television. By 1960 she believed she had permanently retired. In 1958, Farrow and O'Sullivan's eldest son, Michael, died in a plane crash in California.

Actor Pat O'Brien encouraged her to take a part in summer stock, and the play A Roomful of Roses opened in 1961. That led to another play, Never Too Late, in which she co-starred with Paul Ford in what was her Broadway debut. Shortly after it opened on Broadway, Farrow died of a heart attack. O'Sullivan stuck with acting after Farrow's death; she was the Today Girl for NBC for a while, then made the movie version of Never Too Late (1965) for Warner Bros. She was also an executive director of a bridal consulting service, Wediquette International. In June and July 1972, O'Sullivan was in Denver, Colorado, to star in the Elitch Theatre production of Butterflies are Free with Karen Grassle and Brandon deWilde. The show ended on 1 July 1972.

When her daughter, actress Mia Farrow, became involved with Woody Allen both professionally and romantically, she appeared in Hannah and Her Sisters, playing Farrow's mother. She had roles in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and the science fiction oddity Stranded (1987). Mia Farrow named one of her own sons Ronan O'Sullivan Farrow for her mother. In 1994, she appeared with Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers in Hart to Hart: Home Is Where the Hart Is, a feature-length made-for-TV movie with the wealthy husband-and-wife team from the popular weekly detective series Hart to Hart.

O'Sullivan's first husband was the Australian-American writer, award-winning director and Catholic convert John Villiers Farrow, from 12 September 1936 until his death on 28 January 1963. She and Farrow were the parents of seven children: Michael Damien (1939–1958), Patrick Joseph (Patrick Villiers Farrow, 1942–2009), Maria de Lourdes Villiers (Mia Farrow, b. 1945), John Charles (b. 1946),[8] Prudence Farrow (b. 1948), Stephanie Farrow (b. 1949) and Theresa Magdalena "Tisa" Farrow (b. 1951).

O'Sullivan married James Cushing, a wealthy businessman, on 22 August 1983; they remained wed until her death in 1998. Maureen O'Sullivan became a U.S. citizen on 22 October 1947 (Petition for Naturalization #133033), Los Angeles, California.

She was a Roman Catholic.

A Democrat, she supported Adlai Stevenson during the 1952 presidential election.

Maureen O'Sullivan died in Scottsdale, Arizona, of complications from heart surgery on 23 June 1998, at age 87. O'Sullivan is buried at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York, Cushing's hometown. Michael, her oldest son, was killed at age 19 in a 1958 plane crash. Her son Patrick Villiers Farrow, a sculptor and peace and environmental activist, committed suicide in 2009. Her grandson, Ronan Farrow, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.

O'Sullivan has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6541 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, facing the star of Johnny Weissmuller. A black plaque marks her home on Main Street in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland. Just around the corner from there, opposite King House, is a tree, ceremonially planted by O'Sullivan to mark her return to her birthplace.

In 1982, O'Sullivan was awarded The George Eastman Award, given by George Eastman House for distinguished contribution to the art of film.

A WOKE! Film Review As Awards Season Begins...       by Lucas Avram Cavazos

Roland Emmerich is the mind behind the helming of huge blockbusters Stargate in 1994 and Independence Day a couple of years later. These flicks created stars and launched careers, but Emmerich went on to continue creating mega-movies that required big budgets, special effects and often (for this critic and viewer) way too much suspension of disbelief…e.g., Universal Soldier, his disaster flicks like Day After Tomorrow and 2012, Godzilla, the heinous Stonewall violation and yes, even the Independence Day sequel from three years ago.  I would also note that he is one of only two big budget directors who is gay and can still draw your atypical, straight male, aged 18-49 audience to his flicks. The other man would be Bryan Singer but as he is a paedophile piece of shit whose actions ruined the joy that was The X-Men and savagely drivelled out his take on Freddie Mercury, only to then be removed as director, we’ll not speak of his nasty, botoxed-ass face.

My grandfather on my mother’s side was one of the only (if not the only) Mexican-American naval admirals during the WWII era, so watching this film really kept putting a lot of my mother’s yapping over the years into focus and later became a notice of something awry, but we shall speak of that later. This autumn’s big (and a tad desperate attempt) at wooing Oscar falls a bit right of the middle, (almost) like a poor man’s version of a Dunkirk endeavour, though it’s fair to say that Emmerich and Christopher Nolan are very different directors.

Starting briefly in 1937 with an also quick meeting between Japanese Marshal Admiral Yamamoto and US intelligence officer, and a lead character in the film, Edwin Layton (never-ageing Patrick Wilson) where Yamamoto tells him that the Japanese will do whatever necessary if their oil supplies are in any way jeopardised. Fast forward four years, the world is at war, and what starts off as a film with way too many sappy one-liners that are ultra-cringeworthy soon turns into a visual tour de force that is incredible as much as it is laborious.

For certain, while Emmerich and film rookie writer Wes Tooke pull out all the wannabe-an-epic stops with a semi-lock on military vernacular and shoddy banter, they also do a decent job of covering the Pearl Harbor drama that securely put the US into World War II, and they end up nailing it with a lot of historical accuracies. From documenting the Doolittle Raids (Jimmy Doolittle is played here by a where’s-he-been Aaron Eckhart) to US cryptographers breaking some of the Japanese codes to highlighting the inefficiency of US weapons and their ridiculous uses, even bringing in cinema director John Ford and his presence during a Japanese raid that made its way into one of his movies, they accurately get a show-in of facts as the plot plods along. What does not seem to make its way into the film is a sense of realness expressed by the myriad of stereotypes employed here from the goofy Italiano-type guys to the smarmy Southerner to the golly shucks whitey fords, it seems that every 40s, male, US-American film role was taken up by someone except that there was not a single, solid scene that had any African or Native or Latin-American or Asian-American person in the mix here at all, despite the fact that millions of them, as well as, more than half a million Jews and Arabs and Armenians and so many more served hand-in-hand with the nearly 16 million men and women who comprised some part of the armed services during the WWII years. As a tutor and student of history, I take issue with that, and I also wonder if Emmerich had actually been from the US, would he have paid a tad more attention to that? I’d like to think so, but sincerely doubt it at the same time...Yet I digress.

It seems to me that the glory of Midway lies in its impeccable action sequences which engage the audience so vividly that it is virtually impossible not to stay glued to the intensity being displayed so spectacularly before you, but then that is exactly the stuff that big war movies are made of. Well…that and a huge lineup of stars to draw different audiences from all over the entertainment spectrum. To note, and in addition to anyone named above, we also have Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, the odd-looking Ed Skrein, Darren Criss, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, and even Nickalicious Jonas, playing the role of an ill-fated pilot. I kept seeing a new actor every ten minutes and thinking, ‘Oh shit, is that so-and-so?’…and it was so-and so!

Now while I would likely be safe to predict that there may be a nomination thrown in for some of the effects sequences perhaps, this mediocre war film is not likely to pick up any major love come awards season soon, but what it does do in its own way is completely highlight all the chaos of the attacks over three crucial days in US and Japanese history. The battle moments fought over a blazingly clear and sunlit sky serves to add credence to the heroic and insane nature of the US and Japanese pilots, but what it also does is introduce just how vital passing through this evil war was in relevance to what would turn out to be this modern age.
