Maggy Rouff. Photo Isabey.

It is here in artificial satin, heavy and shiny, pearl white adorned at the neckline with two pink crystal motifs. Maggy Rouff. Photo Isabey.

Girl With a Leica, 1934
Light is a necessary condition for photography. The Light and Shadow section looks at how black-and-white photography excels at offering texture, mood and depth, as well as patterns that structure an image. Bold compositions and the play of light are at the heart of Aleksandr Rodchenko’s work as a graphic designer, sculptor, and photographer. Rodchenko (1891–1956) was the leader of Russian constructivism in the 1920s. An unconventional composition with a tilted angle and criss-cross patterns of shadow, this photograph embodies his experimental spirit
