okay i gotta ramble for a second
what really disappointed me most about 18if is haruto's character arc actually
so like. all the witches were living out fantasies, right? Be it power, or revenge, or freedom, they were all living fantasies they couldn't, or thought they couldn't, enjoy in real life.
That is a very interesting framework to view the characters through, so of course i'd try to apply that to haruto pretty early on.
I think that his particular fantasy was being able to help others. The biggest evidence for this is episode 8, where the witch of the episode is concerned for him, for once. She says that he "wants to help others, but doesn't want to be helped" which just got layers, man.
He is, essentially, also a witch. He's trapped in the dream world, living out his fantasy, and hell, he can even do whatever he wants, because it's a dream, right? (Surviving being beheaded just by thinking "hey this is a dream! i'm not dead! fuck you!" is actually rlly cool)
And the show just, never does anything with that?
In episode 8 we get the only taste of what his life before the dream was like, and it, like the dream, bears immense similarity to the witches. When he loses his headphones, we get flashes of people calling him boring or annoying, unknown people including adults (parents? teachers?) rejecting him. The "you're boring" line even comes off as a direct callback to episode one!
So we got a rejected lonely kid, who's fantasy it is to help people, but who doesn't want to be helped. Who doesn't think he deserves to be helped.
We can conclude he actually has pretty low self-esteem, and through that, his argument with kanzaki, wherein he gets suspicious if kanzaki actually wants to help him, can be interpreted as a sort of, externalised self-doubt, i guess? Believing he shouldn't be helped he doesn't think kanzaki actually wants to help him.
Well, the above paragraph is a bit of a reach. But still.
Despite all these similarities between himself and the witches, there's one key difference.
The witches chose to dream. Haturo didn't.
In the last few episodes we learn Haruto's been in a coma (which makes sense given he's been asleep the entire series) and the entire time, he just wants to wake up.
Which is where we go back to episode 8, because that ep is a goldmine, honestly.
There, the witch also says that haruto's not as altruistic as he seems. Maybe, he doesn't want to help others. Instead, he wants to help himself.
That would recontextualize why he's helping the witches wake up. Because he can't! He has the background and experience to understand them, but a motivation contrary to them. He wants to wake up, and, by talking to the witches, makes them realize maybe they should wake up, too.
Which is, in itself, dream fulfillment for haruto. Irony.
And here is where i get mad. After the absolute goldmine that is ep8, we learn pretty much nothing else about him. Sure, there's the fact he's been in a coma for some time now, but the exploration of his characer just. falls flat.
How'd he land there? For how long? Does that one goddamn enigmatic doctor have anything to do with it? Tell me how Haruto feels about being basically dead, goddammit.
And while I did find the finale hilarious, i'm also kinda disappointed that haruto doesn't really do anything in it? It's nice that the witches were the ones to change eve's mind, but eve is lily. She has essentially been with him through the entire show, and then he's not even the one to have that final talk with her. In the end, he does reject killing eve, but he doesn't contribute anything of note to the conversation.
The ending of not only the show, but his personal character arc as well, leaves much to be desired.
As i established, his character had layers, man.
So why is it that the one character who always wanted to wake up, who repeatedly showed the witches the worth of the real world, that he is the one who stays in a dream world?
Even in the final goddamn episode, he asks, "And what will happen to me? How will I wake up?"
And nobody answers him. And he just accepts that! This entire time he has wanted nothing more than to wake up, and at that final home stretch, he is denied.
He just. Goes with Eve to who knows where. We get a final shot of him and Eve in the golden gates, as well as his body in the real world flatlining.
He kinda just dies at the end. That's it. He doesn't get to wake up. The only character forced into the dream world, and he's the one sleeping forever.
The entire damn series, he helps others, dream fulfillment or not, but at the last moment, nobody helps him.
It's just. frustrating, man.
(Sidenote: i don't remember which episode but somewhere toward the finale, lily reveals she's the one who won't let him wake up. And how mean is that? To just keep him there for her own selfish purposes? As a suicide assistant, essentially? So, by all means, she should know how, or if, he could wake up. And she doesn't say anything. Just takes him along with her.)

Symbolism Part 1 - White Lilies
As it comes up the last days to discuss about people “interpreting things the wrong way, because they draw conclusions from the now-a-days and not back from when the story was made”, I want to give some emphasis on this topic here. It’s not so much a gap between now and yesterday, but even more of one between the Western worlds  and Japan. I use “Western worlds” because there are significant differences in understanding different symbols between US and Europe, too (not to mention between diffrent groups within it, mostly based on the kind of education. Agape *coughs*).
My personal best smybol with a big chance of misunderstanding is the White Lily. In Christian context the lily, especially the white one, is a symbol of Mother Mary, of purity and unconditional motherly love. It’s a strictly feminine symbol, too, normaly not used in male context. In Japan this meaning is known, too, especially in the context of purity. But there is another meaning in it, at least in pictural medias. If you watch japanese series and films closely, you will come to see that white lilies often foreshadow death. That goes along with the modern european interpretation, where White Lilies are often used as death flowers, too.
Tumblr media
This lily is from the anime Android Kikaider from 2000, Episode 5 (City of Rain). It’s the strongest symbol of both pure love and death within the whole episode (which I consider by far the best of the series).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These imigaes are taken form 18if (2017), Episodes 12 and 13. Again the flower seemed to be used for two meanings. But the purity meaning, that’s bound with and told by the charcter Lily is twisted. What’s left throughout the show is only the white lily as death flower.
What to note: If the white lily is used as a symbol for love, it’s a pure love. No sexuality involved. That’s a very old meaning dating back to ancient times and at least in those contexts I knew, a white lily isn’t understood that way. I would have taken in even older uses in manga/ anime/ shows, but I got no pictures ready, so watch out for edits on this one ^^

18if Ep12 The climax is finally here I've been waiting so long for all the witches to reunite with Haruto and to help him with his escape from the dream world. I loved how this episode has a fun little fight scene using the power of Idols. Haruro finally makes his way to Eve's red door and enters it marking the end of the episode. Next episode will most likely be the end of the series and I will truly be bittersweet to see such an awesome and weird anime finish this weekend. An after thought I've had is how much I absolutely love the intro to 18if. Teddyloid you're music breathes live into anime. #18if #supernatural #haruto #lily #eve #teddyloid #review #reviews #overview #anime #manga #witches #witch #SleepingBeautySyndrome #RedDoors #RedDoor #crunchyroll

my full thoughts/feelings on 18if
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i just finished an anime so you know what time it is:
some random thoughts and feelings on the show 18if, which (i dont think) isnt super popular. I found it randomly looking through funimation and i thought it looked interesting.
funimation summary: After going to sleep like normal, Haruto Tsukishiro wakes up to discover something unbelievable—he's stuck in dream world! Here, witches plague the dreamscape and are more than dreamy figments—they're the trapped souls of young women who've rejected reality and are afflicted by the "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome." As he searches for a way out, Haruto will face the witches and their terrifying power.
anyways heres the tweets:
- i really liked the main character which is weird bc in the things ive watched the main character usually is not my favorite but he actually was super cool and i wish we got to learn more of him through out the series but most of the things are surface level information. My favorite part was the fact that he wasn’t super morally driven if that makes sense he believed that sometimes people deserve to die and i agree idk (this is really deep for point one im sorry)
-the opening is G R E A T ive had it suck in my head for days now and its trippy idk i didnt think i would like it but i really do
-EVE IS HOT AND I TAKE NO COMMENTS
-honestly all of the characters 10/10 my bisexuality was screaming
-THEY REALLY ADDED IN THIS FINE ASS MF LIKE WE WOULD NOTICE AND HES A DOCTOR??????? NEEDED MORE SCREEN TIME AND I KNOW THERE IS PRO SOME DEEPER MEANING BUT I DONT CARE (this live tweet was  written from the first time i saw a pretty man for like 10 seconds and there he is)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-story line was pretty good but i wish they bled into each other more
-lily scared me but i liked it
-honestly the whole last episode made me scream laugh for no reason other than the fact that ive been only doing homework for a about a week and my humor has gotten worse
-the animation change in some episodes made me feel like i was tripping on acid (u know the specific one i mean)
-THE KISS SCENE???? OUTTA POCKET??? MADE ME FEEL SOMETHING??? confusing head empty just anime characters kissing in the air
-ummmm i really wish they had some trigger warnings so be careful if u watch it (nothing huge huge but still wish they added it) but overall the anime is kinda sad soooooo
-i just wanna know. the cat man. why. i wanna know someone explain.
-i. love. women. thats it thats the tweet
-i teared up but im emotionally closed off rn so lol no pain
-lol are we gonna act like the bdsm comment in the first didnt make u laugh bc ur lying
-would fight any of the witches if it meant that they would step on me bc im trying to get into the halloween spirit
overall: i feel empty, i want to be between haruto and eve, sad but decent anime, and honestly just really weird and i liked it. Would recommended it to a gamer person who wants to fight a norse god. lol i probably want to say more but i dont remember everything. also i didnt proof read this lol have fun reading it.
Finished in: one day
rating:7.2/10

I love flower motifs in anything, and 18if has them in spades thus far. There is a character clad in a white dress named Lily who saves Haruto and implores him to save the witches he meets, and there have been flowers in the foregrounds of shots numerous times in just 2 episodes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The purple flower in the dream world of episode 1 seems to be a Japanese purple iris, and the red ones in the flashback to Yuuko's witch-inciting incident may be poppies. I would posit the poppy in this scenario is just a hint that Yuuko will soon succumb to her dream-coma, and the purple iris to the power she wields in the dream world (as the acting queen, if you will.)
Tumblr media
But I especially love thistles representing Mana in episode 2. Nemo me impune lacessit, “no-one provokes me with impunity.”

18if (A Review)
“After going to sleep like normal, Haruto Tsukishiro wakes up to discover something unbelievable—he's stuck in dream world! Here, witches plague the dreamscape and are more than dreamy figments—they're the trapped souls of young women who've rejected reality and are afflicted by the "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome." As he searches for a way out, Haruto will face the witches and their terrifying powers” - Crunchyroll
Tumblr media
Once in a while an anime comes along with a purely original concept and style that becomes far more than it appears.  18if attempted to be that kind of anime.  With certain things, it worked, but with others, it failed leaving the show interestingly enjoyable but far below it’s potential.
When it comes to series like 18if, I’m expecting to be wowed.  If it claims to be original, I want it to be what it claims.  18if came halfway there.
Tumblr media
I’d like to talk first about the story.  On the surface it’s very simple.  Stuck in a dream world where women with Sleeping Beauty Syndrome happen to appear as world-manipulating witches, Haruto is tasked with finding what tragedy brought them there and free them.  Generally, this plot was a bit episodic, and that isn’t always a bad thing as long as each episode grows the world built for the series.  Unfortunately, the dream world has so many holes that are merely covered with “because it’s a dream world” that it’s really not very believable.
When a series worldbuilds, something needs to be believable.  To make it believable, it’s the writers’ task to create a world where the mechanics of that world make sense.  Sleeping Beauty Syndrom and influencing the dream world in a way that intentionally soothes the subconscious makes sense, but exactly what is possible for both the witches and Haruto isn’t really explained.
Tumblr media
Another story flaw is just how episodic the series is.  I’m alright with episodic series as long as there’s some common line.  Granted, the presence of Haruto is that common line, but it isn’t until the later episodes that even the Doctor questions Haruto’s presence in the dream world.  Haruto is also sympathetic in that he is literally thrust into the “hero” role, but aside from that we don’t know anything about him except his sporatic relation to the witches, the Doctor, and the mysterious Lily.  Also, being episodic without clear character is one thing but every episode having different art styles and different tones is quite another.
There were some beautifully animated episodes, and for at least half of the episodes, the changes in art and tone work to explore the subconscious of whatever witch is the focus of that episode.  However, there was serious inconsistency in the quality of the art and the quality of the story episode by episode.  I mean, it’s not the stylistic differences that are jarring and bothersome so much as the sheer difference in overall quality between episodes like “And Now There are None...” (7) and “Idols Don’t Go to the Bathroom!” (9) speaks for itself.
Tumblr media
The quality was due to Gonzo specifically having different directors directing every single episode, but without one unifying theme to draw, instead of becoming a unique and original collaborative project, we just get a mess.
Our ending, also, could potentially throw people for a loop.  It makes sense, and it provides a really interesting theistic perspective of the Adam and Eve story; however, it comes so out of left field considering how little about the dream world is explained in the previous episodes
With this series, I constantly went from one side of the fence to the other.  Some episodes I loved and couldn’t wait for more, while other episodes I nearly turned off in the middle.  I appreciated the originality that the production tried to bring out but I had no clue what the hell they were doing with 18if, which is why it’s getting a rating smack dab in the middle.
I would not recommend 18if to the casual anime viewer.  If you like to intentionally and academically watch anime, then you may get something out of this series.  For example, several episodes were just so beautiful that if the series was only those episodes this would have gotten a 4/5.  However, if you just watch anime to have a good time, then I don’t recommend this one.
Anime-Planet Rating: ★★✯☆☆ (2.5/5)

i can't sleep so more rambles about anime
okay so my favourite episodes of 18if are by far the ones that aren't afraid to go absolutely ham on the dream aesthetics
episode 1 starts off with an absolute banger in the form of the witch of thunder and her esoteric plushies and the giant melting teddy bears and i love it.
other favourites include episode 2, for being SUCH a dramatic tonal shift and taking full advantage of the concept's nightmare potential, episode 7 for being just beautiful actually (i want an entire show in that style ngl), or episode 8 for it's wonderful use of inked pen monochrome and pastel watercolors as a beautiful contrast.
episode 10 is also just stunning. The environment is ever changing and full of bizarre imagery, it truly gives of the impression of an artist completely lost in her own work. The episode has a less overt plot than the others, much like the similar artstyle shifting episode 7, and watching all the characters explore dream dimension alpha together is just a treat.
Some other episodes just seemed hesitant in comparison? From what i've read on wikipedia, every episode had a different director, and it shows with how much each of them leaned into the dream concept.
Like, episode 4 has a kinda basic dream aesthetic? Ohhh bright colors and donuts everywhere wowwwwwww. I do get that the witch of the episode yearned for a time where she was unburdened and could eat freely, but it's a little generic.
Episode 5 just has a generic college campus, which i guess is kinda the point of it. I enjoyed the ending though, with the dream represented as screens in the black void, mirei not a participant, but a viewer.
Episode 9 is bad. There's like two things i maybe liked in it, but it was much to juvenile for the topic it was handling, and a lot of it was just. uncomfortable. horny people have no rights.
worst offender is episode 12. Like, here is the witch of white lilies!! She is an angel pop star! Her wings have surround sound! She is stationed in a generic wasteland and shooting you with tanks! Come onnnn couldn't the defense system be themed around her? Like, you had the apocalypse with the lightning and the gigantic lilies sprouting everywhere and eve's giant eye watching from the sky, why couldn't it have been like that? The 'real world' as shown that ep was more fantastical than the dream world!
I don't have a lot to say about ep 13 here bcuz most of it just took place in haruto's room? we already saw a lot of it in the previous eps. It's a cool room, bcuz it's just a little too mundane to be weird, but a little too weird to be mundane. It's a wild pick for the finale though.
That's all i really have to say about it. I guess the lesson is don't be afraid to go apeshit with your chosen aesthetic? Be weird, go wild!
(Episodes 8 & 10 are the best ones, 3 has a plain aesthetic but i adore it by sole virtue of kayooooooooooo NOoooooo)

Brief Thoughts - 18if: Episode One SPOILERS MAY BE AHEAD! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Episode One: I went into this knowing nothing about the series and I came out of the first episode still not exactly knowing what it is about. While I can't say I am disappointed, as I hsd no real expectations, I can't say I was impressed either. The style felt kind of strange to me, though I think, in the end, it will just take some getting used to. The actual feel of the show (camera angels and whatnot) reminded me a lot of the Satoshi Kon movie Paprika (though this show is not as good going by 1st episode only.) and to a smaller, near miniscule amount Flip Flappers. A lot of movement and what the fu** did I just see?' going on. As for the actual story,Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hideI am going to guess MC is a being similar to Lily. This hypothesis has no real basis other then after it being stated you die in real life after dying and the dream world, he seems to live, but also because of where MC wakes up. We get a look outside the window in his room and see a whole bunch of gears, which is kinda trippy and leads me to believe he lives in a separate 'dream pocket' of sorts rather than in reality itself. Also, as for the professor, it is never really said or not that after dying in dream, you can't be revived in dreams. It is possible once he left through the blue door his subconscious/dreamself just vanished because his body was no longer living. It is also possible MC or Lily have the power to completely revive those who have 'died' unconsciously or not. It is also possible the professor isn't even a real person, though this seems less likely given his knowledge of both Lily and the dreamscape. As for Lily, I can see her being a potential villain. She outright tepls MC to kill the Thunder Witch (I believe she called herself) after it was said dying in dreams would kill the person in real life too. (A fact that is still a potential lie from what we have seen the episode.) MC instead decides to talk her down (The small line he said about never telling her to ger naked had me laughing a little.), yet I have the feeling if he runs into another witch he may actually kill them in order to escape and we will see if it really negatively effects the victim of the 'Alice Syndrome.' Anyway, all that is just pure speculation on my part. As far as my actual interest in this series. Well, I adore Paprika and, as I mentioned, this episode reminded me a little of that, so I am going to give it at least 3 episodes before deciding if I should drop it or not. The main reasons, at this point, are the art style and if it just remains simply wacky with little substance.

The original plot tells the story of a website who is only available at midnight, and allows anyone send people to hell by typing their name there, but it has a cost, the Hell Girl comes to decide if your wish will come true or not; and also take the wisher’s souls to a afterlife in hell.
