The "tiktok ban" should scare you and here's why.
Rant made by an autistic, history-loving, chronically online American tiktok cosplayer. Please let me know if I've gotten anything wrong and I will edit the post.
Reblog to spread awareness!
This is not just about Tiktok, and it's not about national security. The Tiktok ban is wrapped up in the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act" which has the ability to ban any foreign website or app that the United States government sees as a threat to their "democracy." Not only that, but if the gov't didn't want China to gather data, then they would ban things like Shein and Temu (the latter which they advertised during the Super Bowl), which collect similar data that Tiktok does. If they wanted to prevent our data being stolen in general, they would ban companies like Meta, which monetarily supports the Tiktok ban and had to change their name because "Facebook" was associated with the largest data leak in history.
The documentations of the Tiktok court interrogations prove how incompetent our government is. Repeatedly asking the TikTok CEO Mr. Chew if he's Chinese while he repeatedly assures them he's Singaporean. The officials being concerned that they can't find Singapore on a map. The officials then being confused why the app would be able to have access to their wifi because it needs wifi to load.
The possibility of the US buying Tiktok exposes a greater issue in America: monopolies. The Sherman Antitrust Act was passed in 1890 that restricted the activities of large companies known as monopolies, which started out as small companies and would either buy other companies or buy the factories which produced all their materials. This eliminated competition in the market and gave the monopolies almost full control of quality and prices of items, and it was considered very anti-American at the time. Since the US already has multiple major social medias, including Facebook (Meta), Instagram (Meta), Threads (Meta), X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, and Reddit, adding Tiktok would mean that nobody could compete with the US in the social media market. This makes them a monopoly, and it's incredibly dangerous.
Banning Tiktok breaks several American trademarks. A) the Republicans banning Tiktok are very concerned about their second amendment right to own guns, but they seem to not care about the first amendment right to freedom of speech and press, which Tiktok delivers. Of course there are app guidelines, but for the most part you have fairly uncensored political and ethical commentary like no other social media. B) the only other countries that have banned Tiktok are either heavily demonized by America or are direct targets for American propaganda (ex. China), which really doesn't make the ban look good. C) banning a social media for the purpose of censorship is a trademark of communism, which Americans are INCREDIBLY wary of.
Your country may follow in suit. Because of America's influence as a global superpower and an ally to many other major powers, America banning Tiktok would likely lead to a domino effect in other countries.
The rich get richer. There is a concept called social darwinism, in which it is the rich's beliefs that the poor must fend for themselves without the help of the government in order to make a living - "survival of the fittest." Tiktok contributed around $14.7 billion USD in 2023 and $24.2 billion in 2024, and it supports around 224,000 jobs [source]. The actual Tiktok website says in 2023, they contributed $15 billion USD in revenue and supported 7 million US businesses [source]. Without these jobs, there could be in increase in homelessness, debt, and sickness due to withdrawals (if you're incredibly addicted to Tiktok) and lack of quick dopamine hits (due to the rapidfire nature of the algorithm).
Remember that the president is not your friend !! Many of the political figures rallying to support Tiktok right now, such as President Biden, initially voted for the ban. President Biden is likely supporting now so that Trump won't get credit for it, and future President Trump is likely doing it for brownie points among younger generations.
The Xiaohongshu migration exposed the American government and its lies. The stories from American 'Tiktok refugees' about the questions from native Chinese on the Xiaohongshu / Rednote / Redbook app (considered the Chinese mixed of Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook) posed a lot of conspiracies and realizations about the American government. The Chinese actually own their homes, they have lower food prices than we do, and they have a slim homelessness rate. Whether this is true or not, it has greatly influenced how we see ourselves in the grand scheme of the American oligarchy, and that is not something that can be suppressed with an app being banned.
Tiktok is not totally Chinese! The CEO is Singaporean, as I've already stated, and there are multiple headquarters in the US, with the main one being in Los Angeles.
In conclusion...
Whether Tiktok is banned or not, whether permanently or not, no matter who saves it or rallies against it, remember that it is harder to scare and control someone when they are in a group. And if you think this was interesting, I'd love it if you could reblog to show some support and inform your friends as well. <3

Singapore's first railway line
Nineteenth century Singapore had its fair share of interesting personalities. One was a certain Mr Charles Burton Buckley, who had what might be thought as Singapore’s very first mile of railway built at Bukit Timah. Buckley in Singapore’s first motorcar Buckley first arrived in Singapore as a young man of twenty in 1864 and was a well established lawyer by the time he had the line in 1892.…

The “goal of civilization” should be to get these delicious tropical pineapples shipped up to kitchen tables in St. Petersburg.
Much to consider here.
---
Anton Chekhov, it appears, was not the first Russian literary luminary to visit Hong Kong. Chekhov had stopped off in October 1890 and wrote about its “wonderful bay”. [...] But Chekhov was beaten to the punch by Ivan Goncharov who stopped by in 1853. Goncharov is now best now known for his novel Oblamov, but his bestseller at the time was a 700-page tome of travel-writing called The Frigate Pallada. Goncharov had been taken, as a sort of official scribe, on the Russian naval expedition sent to “open Japan”. If that sounds like American Commodore Matthew Perry’s expedition, it very much was: the Pallada arrived in Japan several weeks after Perry. The Pallada [...] went [...] via the Cape of Good Hope, Java, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, with side-trips to Manila, Korea and the Ryukyus. [...] Edyta M Bojanowska relates all this, and much more [in her book] [...]. Bojanowska uses Goncharov’s travelogue as a window on Russia, a window through which to view the European, and particularly British, imperial project [...].
---
Russia’s Pacific history is little known, perhaps even in Russia. [...]
In the library [...], I once came across a book entitled La Frontera ruso-mexicana: “The Russian-Mexican Border”. There actually was one in what is now California in the first part of the 1800s. Nikolai Rezanov had tried to open Japan in 1804; he got nowhere. (He did however continue on to North America and all the way down to San Francisco where he got engaged to Conchita, the [...] daughter of the Spanish governor, a story which became a late Soviet-era rock opera.)
---
Alaska ended up being sold to the United States a decade or so after Goncharov’s voyage. [...] Goncharov’s [book] [...] “strains to project an image of Russia as a confident and competent peer of European colonial empires.” [...] Goncharov was a product of his age. He was furthermore an anglophile and thought that the British had on the whole the right ideas about empire. (He did however find their ubiquity annoying: his idyll on Madeira is ruined by seeing so many of them. “They’re here too?” he wrote.) He would occasionally take the imperialists to task for some particularly egregious injustice, but he never questioned the enterprise. He just thought Russia should have a piece of the action.
---
Goncharov settled on Korea as a good potential target for Russia (“Goncharov Island” is now known as Mayang-do Island, the site of a [...] missile base) [...]. The book hit the ground running, went through ten editions by the end of the century, and seems never really to have been out of print [...]. Singapore gets a slightly fuller treatment. Goncharov marvels at the pineapples piled up “like turnips”. “The goal of civilization,” Bojanowska quotes him, is to get these pineapples up to St Petersburg where they were currently unheard of luxury items. (Goncharov’s equating of capitalism with tropical fruit is reminiscent of the [...] [twentieth-century] fascination with bananas.)

As a Social Democrat, what would you say has been its historical tendencies towards colonialism and upliftment of developing nations? Why is that Communism, despite some acknowledged failures (Afghanistan, Tibet, Xinjiang), is seen as more anti-colonialist by comparison?
That's a really interesting question. Honestly, when it comes to social democracy's record on de-colonization, it's something of a mixed bag. One of Eduard Bernstein's major flaws, his feet of clay, is that he was pro-imperialism - although to be fair, the SPD as a whole was pretty consistently anti-colonialist between the 1890s and 1914. On the other hand, the British Labour Party did very little about empire and was arguably pro-empire up until 1945. Clement Attlee, however, had a personal interest in decolonization and was a committed supporter of Indian self-governance since the 1930s, and negotiated the independence of India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Attlee wasn't entirely consistent on this point - he rather mis-handled the British Mandate in Palestine, African colonies were bypassed for de-colonization, and the Attlee government began the counter-insurgency in Malaysia. So something of a mixed bag, as I said.
Attlee's policies did have a long-term effect on the Labour Party - it opposed British involvement in the Suez Crisis on a united basis despite its divisions on other issues, for example. Likewise, the Harold Wilson government was characterized by broad sympathies to the cause of decolonization but a relatively weak commitment to accepting much risk. For example, Wilson refused to send British ground troops to Vietnam but did provide intelligence and jungle warfare training and wouldn't publicly denounce the war.
He did remove British troops from Singapore, Malaysia, and the Persian Gulf and supported de-colonization in Africa, but he rather screwed up in Rhodesia where after insisting on black suffrage in return for Rhodesian independence, he refused to send the British military to "fight our kith and kin" when Ian Smith unilaterally declared independence for his apartheid state, delaying liberation for many years.
By contrast, the Soviet Union and China could more straightforwardly support anti-colonial insurgencies (that often blended nationalist and communist ideologies) in no small part because the Bolsheviks had been anti-WWI and anti-imperialism pretty consistently thanks to Lenin's influence.
And if you were an anti-colonial insurgency, would you prefer the folks who might give you a thumbs up or the folks who would give you weapons?

how old are Oz and NZ supposed to be (in human years) during wwi and wwii in your fic?
Oh! Timeline for the main players. I know I absolutely neglected to say how old the latter two were by the war chapters due to their absence.
Both however would be in the armed forces. Jack fought at Gallipoli and managed to have a Pulitzer prize winning romance with Malta as he recovered which I genuinely want to write one day (I mean not the prize winning part... realistic expectations...); Maia, like her mother, was a nurse, though in Egypt to begin with then France.
She spent much of WWII in Greece. Jack was in Singapore for WWII and spent most of the war as a POW.
Also I don't know if acknowledging Evie is a teenager for a significant chunk of the 17th century justifies how stupid/traumatised she is for much of it but I hope it explains somethings about her emotional state... I'd say the ageing is the same for Arthur too, thinking on it. That is fixed and does not change in my mind.
1600s: Evelyn: 18; Alfred: 8 months
1630s: Evelyn: 19; Alfred: 4; Matthew: 7 months
1660s: Evelyn: 20; Alfred: 6; Matthew: 2
1690s: Evelyn: 23; Alfred: 10; Matthew: 5
1760s: Evelyn: 28; Alfred: 15/16; Matthew 12/13
1780s: Evelyn: 29; Alfred: 17; Matthew: 16; Jack: 2 months
1850s: Evelyn: 30; Alfred: 19; Matthew: 18; Jack: 4/5; Maia: 10 months
1870s: Evelyn: 30: Alfred: 20; Matthew: 20; Jack: 14/15; Maia: 12.
1890s: Evelyn: 32; Alfred: 21; Matthew: 21; Jack: 19; Maia: 17/18 (Maia is at University in the 1890s chapter, so she's 'old' enough to attend at the very least).
1914: Evelyn: 32; Alfred: 21; Matthew: 21; Jack: 20; Maia: 20.
1939: Evelyn: 33; all the kids are now in their early 20s.
1999: Evelyn 34; all the kids are around 23/24. Their ageing for all of them has massively slowed down after WWII. Why? Because I say so.
I know in canon Alfred shot up like a stick of bamboo as a result of the end of the Seven Years War in 1763 and seemingly ages at the rate of a human during those seven years but I do like the slower pace. Zee does grow nearly at the rate of humans though. She's a wee bit slower but she is not a baby for as long as say Oz or Mattie were. Those boys were babies for a good couple of decades each. Alfred was a toddler/young lad for longer than the others. I don't know if there's a genuine reason, aside from that's just what I wanted to write.

"The fledgling of the South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx mindanensis) has been photographed for the first time in 130 years by eye surgeon and field biologist, Dr. Miguel David De Leon.
The photograph is the first time anyone is able to see the image of the rare small forest kingfisher found only in Mindanao, since the bird was first sighted in Southern Philippines in 1890 during the Steere Expedition.
“Discovered during the Steere Expedition to the Philippines and published in 1890, the fledgling of this Vulnerable species has never been described nor photographed until today,” wrote De Leon in his Facebook post on March 11, 2020, with the photo of the three-weeks-old Dwarf Kingfisher.
The director of the Robert S. Kennedy Bird Conservancy, a group De Leon founded in 2017 with eight field workers and bird photographers, documents birds and habitats to contribute data towards conservation of species and ecosystems.
The Filipino field biologist and his team spent 10 years searching in the avian field trying to document the species nesting, feeding, and breeding behaviors. The dwarf kingfishers are known to be cavity nesters and eat a variety of small invertebrate creatures.
In the book a Guide to the Birds of the Philippines written by Robert S. Kennedy, Pedro C. Gonzales, Edward C. Dickinson, Hector Miranda, and Timothy H. Fisher, it was written that South Philippine dwarf kingfisher perches quietly and darts invisibly from perch to perch.
“Even if we’re watching them closely, they just disappear,” Dr. De Leon said in an interview with The New York Times.
Ceyx mindanensis is the tiniest species of forest kingfisher found only in Mindanao in the Philippines. Its unique call is described as “high-pitched, insect-like, and almost inaudible zeeep.”
Its population is continuously declining, threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.
De Leon hopes that the photographs he had taken will help researchers to learn more about the species.
De Leon also praised his colleagues for faithfully and cheerfully adhering to the strictest guidelines in carrying out avian field research, and shared an excerpt of RSKBC’s Guidelines, “In observing and documenting birds, RSKBC upholds the medical principle of primum non nocere–first, do no harm. . . field work is done with the welfare of the birds as prime import.”
Initiatives to conserve Philippine bird species include sending a breeding pair of Philippine Eagles to Singapore’s conservation bird park, Puerto Princesa City is moving to declare itself as the “Bird Capital of the Philippines”, and the University of the Philippines setting up the “Siyap”, an outdoor exhibit of wild bird sounds in UP Diliman."

Attorney General's action on Opium
9 November 1890
The Attorney General has released a sweeping package of reforms to tackle the growing opium reliance among troops, ranging from prohibition of service personnel from consuming drugs and mandatory drug tests. While the Police Commissioner has been supportive of the measure, the average police officer has not been satisfied with the measure.
"I cant believe that a coolie has more rights than me"
Anonymous police officer
These new changes have resulted in the resignation of Coy 4 platoon 5 (who frequent opium dens for their nights out), but it may have prevented more soldiers from becoming like Coy 4 platoon 4 of Singapore Division. Speaking of which, they are well on their way to recuperation and would eventually come back to service soon.

Bia San Miguel, Guinness và huyền thoại về Tour đấu Billiard xuyên châu Á
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d04ff6c46436d98d993908d4bd964097/adad52e8620bba9a-86/s540x810/903d8e0f5e9f1a9a6014828d9f9f25334200f10d.jpg)
What does it mean to be Chinese 🇭🇰 🇹🇼 and British 🇬🇧 ? This display of photographs by Jamie Lau offers us eight unique answers to this question. Lau was born in London and grew up in rural Bedfordshire with no extended Chinese community around him. Whilst the UK’s Chinese community is mostly based in towns and cities, in this series Lau introduces us to seven other Chinese and British individuals and what they love about countryside life. Meet artist Qu Lei Lei, who forages for wood for his sculptures on the forest floor. Hear from Ruby Peng who grew up in #singapore 🇸🇬 but is fascinated by the slow pace of countryside living. Discover what Reverend Mark Nam makes of the typically English phrase ‘More tea, Vicar?’ In 2014 Jamie Lau was commissioned by Open Eye Gallery to produce Ebb and Flow, a photographic series on Liverpool’s Chinatown, an abstract study of the architecture and people that make up the oldest Chinatown in Europe. The project had particular relevance to Jamie with his Grandfather having passed through the city as a sailor in the 1890s en route from Hong Kong. 8 Stories develops his interest in merging cultures. Learn more about the history of the #chinese community in the UK and hear stories of the remarkable individuals who have lived through it in our free exhibition Chinese and British, open until Sunday 23 April 2023. #hongkong 🇭🇰 #taiwan 🇹🇼 #macau 🇲🇴 #china 🇨🇳 #britishlibrary (à The British Library) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7MAzKrMDU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Visited by Malay navigators since ancient times, it was included on the maps of English and Dutch navigators in the early 17th century. The current name was given by William Mynors of the East India Ship Company, who landed there on Christmas Day 1643. Christmas Island was uninhabited until 1890, when a population consisting of Chinese and Malays was brought in to exploit the phosphate mines. The island, which depended on the British colony of Singapore, was transferred to Australia on 1 October 1958. From 1981 onwards, residents were deemed eligible to acquire Australian citizenship. In 1984, the government of Australia extended social security, health and education benefits to the island and granted political rights to new citizens. Income tax was introduced from 1985. The focus of local life was the Phosphate Mining Commission, where practically the entire population worked. In 1987, the authorities closed the mine, which was reopened in 1990 by private operators, but under strict conditions of preservation of the environment. In 1991, investments were made to develop the island's tourist potential. https://www.instagram.com/p/CplILcYD2xl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It actually was performed in Singapore by an amateur troupe around 1890 and attended by the King of Siam and his entourage. Everyone loved it, and the English tutor of one of the king's sons assigned it to his charge as a translation exercise. The result was so stiff and formal that his father and some of his uncles and such turned it into a fake religious text, complete with "original" verses in the holy language. (That prince, who eventually became king, is now -- ironically -- remembered largely as a author and playwright. He returned to the text as an adult and retranslated/readapted it with a Chinese setting.)

“Tit Willow” was written by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert for the 1885 light opera The Mikado. The first and last verse of the song was sung by Rowlf the dog (Jim Henson) and Sam the Eagle (Frank Oz) in the UK spot of season 1, episode 20 of The Muppet Show (1976). The song is a solo, but Rowlf convinces Sam to play the part of the dicky bird in the song and makes him repeat the call of “tit willow.”
