P.S. Krøyer (July 23, 1851 - 1909) was one of the circle of painters and Bohemians known as Skagensmalerne/The Skagen Painters. His canvases fetch high prices in auctions worldwide, and he is a prime representative of Danish impressionism.

'Interior of a Tavern', by Peter Severin Krøyer, 1886. Danish artist 1851-1909. Photo by R. M. Lenox. From Philadelphia Museum of Art: "Peter Krøyer was a member of the Skagen School, a group of nineteenth-century painters who worked by the sea on the northern tip of Denmark every summer. He created this scene of fishermen gathered in a tavern in Skagen for John G. Johnson of Philadelphia, an eminent lawyer and avid art collector."

The Blue Hour
A couple years ago, I got the chance to discover Danish and Norwegian painter Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) during the first ever exhibition dedicated to him in Paris.
I had never heard of this artist before but I instantly fell in love with his style and subjects. He painted many seascape scenes, with or without characters, and is best known for mastering the magical atmosphere of twilight, what we call in French “l’heure bleue” or, as the very old expression says, the moment “entre chien et loup” (between dog and wolf).
There weren't many exhibitions in my life where I felt that connected to the art I was looking at, so I felt like sharing this with the world.
I didn’t find any digital version of his paintings that conveyed the colors and lights as well as they looked like on the real canvas, so I’m sharing my own pictures of the exhibition.
‘Tis the man's self-portrait:
This below is one of his masterpieces, in my opinion. I mean look at this. The water feels so real and yet there’s something inexplicably magical about it. And I can’t help but marvel at the translucence presence of the ray in the foreground.
This one is probably my favorite because historical fashion is my thing and there’s this foggy sea that melts in the sky and this blue light feels like heaven. I bought a postcard version that now sits above my desk for forever.
I absolutely love Krøyer’s depictions of the local life in Skagen, a remote fishing village in Denmark where he used to live. There’s something beautiful in the way he composes and angles these scenes.
This last one looks more like impressionism, and that’s not a surprise since Krøyer was contemporary to Monet and a bunch of impressionists painters.
