The Lion of Mari, from Syria (Mesopotamia) c.1782-1759 BCE: this is one of two lion statues that once guarded the entrance to a temple in ancient Mari; the lions were partially crushed when Hammurabi laid waste to the city in 1759 BCE
Tumblr media
That's a pretty fitting expression, given the circumstances
Together, the two lion statues that were found at the ruined temple are known as the "Lions of Mari." They were unearthed from the ruins at Tell Hariri, where the ancient city-state of Mari once stood; this site is located near the border between modern-day Syria and Iraq.
The lions were likely designed as protomes, given their lack of hindquarters. They were originally stationed on either side of the entrance to the temple, so they are often described as the "temple guardians."
Tumblr media
This is the same statue that appears in the first three photos, just seen from a different angle
It's believed that the temple at this site was originally built in honor of a West Semitic deity known as Dagan. Dagan was the chief deity of the Mariote pantheon; he was a particularly prominent figure in the middle and upper regions of the Euphrates, with cult centers in Mari, Terqa, Tuttul, and Ebla, but he was known throughout many parts of the ancient Near East.
Tumblr media
The lion is primarily made of copper, with limestone and shale inlay for the eyes, and it measures 53cm tall, 77.5cm long, and 43cm wide, weighing roughly 55kg (about 21in x 30.5in x 17in, with a weight of 121lbs)
The Lions of Mari were partially crushed when their temple was destroyed (along with the rest of Mari) by Hammurabi's forces in 1759 BCE, leaving the statues badly warped...which is why they look really upset.
It's hard to find high-quality photos of the second lion, but he does have a particularly distinctive appearance:
Tumblr media
This second lion was most recently housed at the National Museum of Aleppo, in Syria, though its current location/status (in the aftermath of the Syrian Civil War) remains unclear.
Tumblr media
These photographs were taken during the original excavations at the ruined temple; they depict the first lion statue as it was still being unearthed (top) and the second statue shortly after it was removed (bottom)

hello! hope you're doing well, i was wondering if you had any recommendations from where/how/etc to buy Faux Fur tails? such as a fox or coyote tail out of faux fur. i've tried looking but it's not going too well. any tips appreciated!
i recommend yarn, cosplay, or fursuit tail commissions on Etsy! i got my tail from this seller & i am very happy with it. of course realism is limited by price & the abilities of the maker/materials but for my personal needs it has been satisfactory :]
my tail is made from yarn and is ~17in long!

The honor of First Daily Pigeon goes to the bird in this blog's icon, the African Olive Pigeon!! I'll write a bit about the species as celebration for starting this blog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conservation Status: Least Concern (YAY)
The African Olive Pigeon is also known as the Rameron Pigeon. They live in moist forest environments at higher altitudes in various locations across eastern and southern Africa. They are a large pigeon species, with males measuring up to 42cm (17in) in length.
Their diet mostly consists of berries and fruit they find in the canopies, but they are known to descend to snap up insects and fallen fruit as well. The African Olive Pigeon has also been observed engaging in geophagy (earth eating)!! Current studies indicate that they eat clay soil/dirt as a mineral supplement (for things like sodium), and to act as a pH buffer, because their natural diet is fairly acidic.
They lay (typically) one egg at a time in large stick nests, and they say a loud COO COO as their call.

We are so fucking back... All of the yarn I frogged is now completely used up and now, I can move on. It's crazy, I lost about thirteen inches (from 30in/76cm to 17in/43cm) since I've done this properly. It looks so much better, I could care less when this is what it looked like before:

Web Table
Item #: SCP-10807
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-10807 does not appear to display any anomalous properties so may be kept anywhere on the premises of Site-14 with permission from Site Director R██████.
SCP-10807 is to be kept in a safe-class containment chamber in Site-14 and may only be accessed by Level 3 personnel. SCP-10807 is not to be removed from its containment chamber under any circumstances.
Description: SCP-10807 is a 51.5in x 27.5in x 17in (130.8cm 69.9cm x 43.2cm) rectangular oak coffee table. The top of SCP-10807 has the design of a web carved into the wood. At the centre of this design is a 3in x 3in (8cm x 8cm) hole that goes through the tabletop.
SCP-10807 was first discovered in 19██ after it was delivered to Site-14 by [REDACTED]. It was placed in quarantine and studied for ██ months. It displayed no apparent anomalous effects and was kept in the Site-14 ██████ break room.
Addendum 04/██/2001: Dr. Dekker took SCP-10807 to conduct an unauthorised test on SCP-10108. The results of this test are unknown as Dr. Dekker, SCP-10108, and SCP-10807 have since gone missing.
Addendum 06/██/2016: SCP-10807 was rediscovered by Researcher B███████ in the Site-14 general safe-class storage. It is unknown if the test conducted by Dr. Dekker imbued SCP-10807 with anomalous properties, thus it has been transferred to a safe-class containment chamber where it is under close observation by Dr. J████.
