WIP Wednesday (6/5) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 179)

“Pretty,” is the first thing out of 10’s mouth when Andrew picks up. And Andrew immediately short circuits. There’s warmth spreading up his chest and to his ears and he’s acutely aware that his hands have started sweating. It takes him a second to get his voice box working.

“What?”

“The rainbow,” 10 clarifies. Andrew lets out a breath and curses the day he was born— yet again. This fucking idiot has a habit of wreaking havoc on Andrew’s system. 10 must realize his blunder because he coughs. “You look alright, too.”

“Thanks a lot.”

“You know,” 10 starts. “You should be careful what you show to strangers.”

Though he’s not visible, Andrew cocks a brow. “Really? A lecture on safety from an arsonist?”

“I’m serious. I could find your apartment based on the view out your window.” 10 says and Andrew bristles.

“Liar.”

“There’s a brick building across the street, a street sign I can partially make out, and a four-way intersection to the right. From our earlier conversations, I know you live near a gym. Need I go on?” 

Andrew swallows. “Creepy, but impressive.”

“Maybe this will be my new thing now,” 10 says with a snort. “Instead of fires, I’ll try to figure out where you live.”

“Stalker.” Andrew says. “There’s at least a dozen gyms around here. Besides… You don’t know I’m at my house right.”

“Where else would you be baking brownies?” 10 asks, rendering him silent. His lack of response only encourages 10 to continue. “Nice chair, by the way. It looked comfortable.”

“Wanna guess where I got it, oh mystical detective?”

“Not particularly. But I know without a shadow of a doubt that it didn’t come from the same company as the chair in my hotel room.” 10 sighs. “Thing’s hard as a rock and looks like it came out of a cartoon. I’m thinking about burning it later. See you there?”

“No.” Andrew says firmly.

“Oh, come on. Bring some hotdogs and marshmallows, it’ll be fun.” 10 says and Andrew can hear his smile through the phone.

“You cannot have a bonfire in a hotel room.”

“You’re mean to me.”

Andrew rolls his eyes. “I’m not mean enough to you.”

when did Tails become a wanted criminal? istg archie's timeline is bananas

you’re right about those bananas because the tails enemy of the state lore is kinda wacky wild!!

in terms of timeline, tails became a criminal in issues 178-179 which is nestled between a BUNCH of other crazy arcs (including my beloved tommy turtle sacrifice arc). however, all of the important context regarding HOW and WHY tails became an enemy of the state is a little all over the place. this is gonna be a long one

TL;DR: tails the fox helps overthrow a monarchy (sorta)

heads up i'm going to be spoiling most of the "tails enemy of the state" arc (aka House of Cards), so read it on your own if you're interested! it's a pretty good read

ok so the main thing we gotta start with are tails’ parents in archie sonic: amadeus and rosemary prower.

tails’ parents met when they both served in the military for the acorn kingdom, which is the furry monarchy that serves as the government for sonic’s home. they get married, rosemary gets pregnant with tails, and everything is going swimmingly for them until eggman (named julian kintober at this time), stages a military coup against the acorn kingdom and starts to take over the world.

eggman’s main resource in taking over the world is an invention called the roboticizer, which can take living creatures and turn them into mindless robots that serve him. unfortunately, tails’ dad gets roboticized at the time of eggman’s coup.

before rosemary is roboticized though, something kinda wacky happens.

both of tails’ parents get abducted by aliens, unroboticized, and spend the next 11 years on an alien planet without any contact back to sonic’s world. yeah.

(the aliens are called Bem, they're all scientists and have cute eyelashes.)

11 years pass, and our pal sonic the hedgehog gets lost in space due to Reasons and Events that would take literally forever for me to explain. during his funny little space adventure, he finds himself on the alien planet tails’ parents are on and is reunited with them!

while sonic is there, though, the Bem are hosting a democratic trial for a Bem scientist named Ceneca-9009, who is the alien that transported tails’ parents away from their home in the first place. she's being sentenced to death for kidnapping tails' parents and doing other science experiments related to eggman's roboticization that i don't remember the details of

shenanigans happen, sonic and tails’ parents save Ceneca from execution, and sonic gets back home (unfortunately without tails’ parents - his spaceship was too small). the most important takeaway here is, interestingly enough, the democratic nature of the Bem alien government.

remember, sonic’s home is under rule of a monarchy, specifically the acorn kingdom. on the Bem planet, however, their government functions through democratically elected officials and judicial trials. and tails’ parents REALLY like it compared to the monarchy they know.

eventually, amadeus and rosemary are saved from the alien planet thanks to the help of sonic, knuckles, tails, and tails’s wizard uncle named merlin. i will not be explaining merlin here i honestly have no fucking clue what his deal is

this is REALLY important for tails, because he lived his entire life convinced his parents were gone. in the archie comics, both sonic and knuckles manage to reunite with both of their parents, and tails finally gets that chance as well.

when tails’ parents return, however, it’s clear that they have something big in mind for the acorn kingdom, which is currently going through… a lot. the king, maximillian acorn, is having trouble with Old Man Disease which has previously endangered a lot of his royal subjects (like he tried to order mass genocide once sorta endangerment. dude kinda sucks). because of this, the kingdom is in a transition of power from him to his son elias acorn, who previously ran away to avoid his royal responsibilities. elias is just kinda bad at his job

with the monarchy weakened, the kingdom still recovering from an eggman attack that nearly wiped out their entire population, and two democracy-loving foxes back in town, it’s the perfect setting for a lovely little coup.

(i always get amadeus and elias confused - amadeus is the one with the eyepatch.)

amadeus leads an army of restless citizens to try and overthrow the government, but is very quickly imprisoned. meanwhile, there’s a lot of trouble brewing between sonic and tails for... a number of reasons. sonic insults tails’ dad, sonic had previously dated a girl that tails liked, and tails is kinda getting sick and tired of sonic’s bullshit.

so tails sides with his parents and helps break his dad out of prison, thus making himself an enemy of the state.

when sonic shows up to stop the jailbreak, he and tails have a McFreaking Showdown and yell about their feelings n stuff. meanwhile, tails’ parents go straight to elias acorn and challenge him to a duel for the kingdom.

then like two seconds later sally acorn shows up and makes them talk it out over tea LMAO

so yeah, the coup is very abruptly cancelled and the gang decides to create a democratically elected council to govern alongside the royal family. and oh boy does that constitutional monarchy cause some problems later

and thus concludes the tails enemy of the state lore. House of Cards is a good read imo and there are a lot of good character moments that i skipped over! i think the biggest takeaway here is that sally acorn is the only emotionally intelligent sonic character lmao

So I'm just want to say something in case anyone who's been paying attention is confused. Those of you familiar with this era of Action Comics might know there's a Congo Bill story in every issue and since he does get reinvented as the beloved Congorilla later (not in this story, this was just a weirdly coincidental title occurrence about 5 years ahead of time) why haven't I been annotating them? In short, pre-Congorilla Congo Bill stories are REALLY boring! And when they're not boring, they're intensely racist. Usually both. They're really boilerplate exotic adventure stories that went out of fashion before my grandparents were born for a lot of good reasons. Bill goes to a place, misunderstands or patronizes their culture, beats up a brown bad guy then leaves after shooting a few endangered animals. In short, I've been skipping them this entire time. I will start talking about them when, and only when, we get to the funky golden gorilla and I can talk about the parts of this character we all care about, ok? Action Comics 179

I!!!! Love her!!!!! She's my wife!!!! She is fun and depressed and crafty and manipulative and 🥰🥰 wish we'd seen more of her because she slaps so so severely.. she was done so dirty, with this little screen time :v

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character:

I'm not deeply involved (positively) in any Itori related ship. She simply doesn't interact enough with anyone for me to.. I do have nOTPs tho lmao (like ut*t*ri)

I don't mind Itorize, Itorieto (Etori?) and Itorizeto but that's about it (no OTP here because aro hcs too strong)

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

My unpopular opinion about this character:

I simply do not see enough opinions about Itori but I guess seeing her as aroace probably is. Jessica Rabbit kind of situation u_u

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

MORE!!!!! SCREENTIME!!!!! This is CRIMINAL how little she appears, even for a Clown!!! There were counts of "how many chapters since Hide" and there also were "how many chapters since Itori" and guess who appeared less and later in :re haha *sobs*

I wish we'd seen her kagune ability properly, too! with a little explanation at the very least!! I'm not even sure the flutes were Itori and not Donato's, to tell you *sobbing intensifies*

Her character deserved more respect than to be shipped off with "she's sexy, she's in love with her gay best friend and so she does whatever he does" like what kinda bullshit is this?? since fucking when??? URGH (*inhales* 179 isn't real and cannot hurt me 179 isn't real and cannot hurt me 179 isn't rea-)

How I feel about this character:

Skrunkly. Activates Protec Mode, Extreme edition. Close second place right behind Souta in the competition for who's more of a tragic character in Tokyo Ghoul, solely because of 179. I haven't played the game or read the scenario book (please Glénat.. we all know I hate you but I'd buy it I am begging. please translate it) so my feelings are limited to what little we know of him in :re but oh my good. poor little baby of my heart...

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

ROMA. As I said, I don't know shit about the game so I don't know his brother or anything about him and stuff, so while I am aware that, knowing myself, he might have been my answer if I did know, that simply is not the case and so his mommy wins. Look at them..

OTL I haven't read the Jail book so I don't even know the character all that well and therefore I am very not confident in any deeper opinion I have on the character. But, as I do every Clown (and most every character lmfao), I see him as aroace. Idk what the consensus on this baby is but this bears mentioning I guess?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

HOW'D HE END UP WITH ROMA?? He's with Aogiri on Rushima and the next thing we know he's with Roma and quite close already, at that, so they've clearly got history beyond Cochlea cell neighbors but - and if this was in the Jail game someone please tell me orz - what history?? I want to see!

Also more interaction with the other Clowns as a whole.. with Souta especially...

interesting that my post on the cross-stitch subreddit about supporting the Etsy strike was removed... by a mod who is a very successful Etsy seller who is NOT participating in the strikes at all

idk im just like. our hobby seems so innocuous and harmless in every possible way but nothing exists in a sociopolitical vacuum and it's disingenuous to pretend that isn't the case. things that affect our small business owners are important to the entire community.

so an Observation TM I made recently is that in Western love poetry/devotional works/etc, the beloved or the divine tends to be referred to as a shining light or a feeling of warmth or something along those lines, whereas in the (albeit limited amount of) Indian art I'm familiar with, the beloved/divine is a gentle breeze or a cooling shade

I think this is a really good example of fundamental cultural differences that are baked in so deep that you'd never even notice them - I didn't until I was out with my family in one morning, already 25 degrees C at 9am, and saw a tree to stand under, and something in my brain went Ah

ok so i know im very very late to the party but i can't stop thinking about isabela's line: 'he told me that my power would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine', specifically the word 'grapes'. was this bruno's word or isabela's, chosen simply to sensibly rhyme 'vine' with 'mine' or with a deeper meaning?

remember, all we see isabela create until what else can i do? is flowers. beautiful, sure, but probably not useful for all that much beyond being decorative, whereas grapes are a food, can be used to make wine, and are considered to have minor healing properties (i'm referring to the idea of bringing sick people grapes to make them feel better or at least refreshed). so they're far more practically useful than just flowers, with aspects of hedonism (wine) and healing (perhaps a shout-out to isabela being julieta's daughter, though i acknowledge that that link is tenuous at best).

so is this actually bruno suggesting/isabela wishing for a role for her that's more than the perfect, decorative flower-growing golden child role that she gets pushed into? the 'something true' that she describes in what else can i do? a representation of something more meaningful and three-dimensional than just growing pretty, ephemeral flowers? what else can i do? does feature only flowering plants, it's true, but they're far more diverse than the traditionally elegant and pretty flowers she grows before that, (and she does grow strangling figs in what else can i do?) and it's not a great stretch to imagine that she continues exploring her powers to see if she can grow fruit, grains, herbs/medicinal plants, timber, etc etc, as well

One of the most freeing things you can do as a Christian is start praying over EVERYTHING. And I don't mean "actually remember to pray over the important things that deserve divine attention" or something I mean the stupid stuff

"my videogame controller isn't working properly and it's messing up my game and it's really frustrating me, but I really wanted to play this right now" you have NO idea how often this actually works

"God I can't find my other shoe and I'm in a hurry, please help me find it" BOOM, found.

"I can't sleep because I'm getting myself worked up, give me peace." And it works. Consistently!

Yes we should treat God with reverence, but you misunderstand; he is our father, and our friend. Talk to him. Talk to him about anything and everything. He'll always hear it.

It's strange how the smaller the gesture of love is, the greater the indication of love.

Sure, I could throw a huge party and take you for a night out and buy all your favorite foods and try and get you the stuffed animal you want at the fair and it could be this big grand gesture that says "I love you" and I'll mean it. but loving you in the midst of a party is easy.

I could choose the restaurant I know you like better on a Wednesday night. Be the first to get up when you ask where the remote is. Cook eggs specially the way you like them without being asked. Make the bed because making beds is hard for you. I could whisper I love you as you fall asleep, when you are too tired to return it, but just so you know. So you know that I love you in the mundane, and when you're not returning anything to me.

The grander gestures of love say "today is special and I want you to feel loved." The smaller gestures say "today isn't special, and I want you to feel loved." It's strange, and backwards, and I believe it is quite by design.
