Touching is Good: A Retrospective

My trusty Nintendo 3DS, which has held out since I was gifted it for my 15th birthday, has turned one decade old with my 25th birthday this past November. Given new life with custom firmware and nds-bootstrap via TWiLightMenu, the 3DS is stellar for visiting any past handheld title or console title up to (and somewhat including) the N64. (Quick plug for the CFW/hacking community for the less popular PS Vita, too, which has accomplished some pretty crazy-cool stuff this last year.) I use my 3DS more often than I use my Nintendo Switch most weeks.

The Nintendo DS (minus the three) launched in late 2004. The second display and stylus support were novel tools for developers to experiment with, and the NDS is best remembered for its robust catalogue of RPGs and visual novels. Where it lacked in power, narrative-focused games flourished under its technical limitations.

That being said, while browsing the ROM archives on Vimm's Lair to pick up some titles, I was reminded of what an interesting era the mid-to-late 2000s were for games. While Sony and Microsoft were fighting over the "core gamer" demographic, who had outgrown Nintendo mascots, Nintendo led a series of wildly successful marketing campaigns for its hardware after the light failure of the Gamecube, where the Nintendo DS and then the Wii were targeted at...everyone else.

If you look at ads for the DS and the Wii, you'll see that adults are featured much more prominently than children, especially women and seniors. (This did not go unnoticed, as I found this ancient relic of misogyny while looking for images for this post.) A Nintendo handheld was already an easy sell to parents with small children (though I think it's also notable that ads which do focus on children often prominently feature girls. Munchlax is pretty hot...), but Nintendo's angle for the DS and Wii was that their hardware wasn't just for children. The Wii was a way to get up off the couch and to play board games with grandma. The DS was a great gadget for a working woman to keep in her pocketbook.

This worked. The Wii and DS were two of the best-selling consoles of all time. In particular, the DS's marketing campaign only worked because it came out in the perfect window of time. PDA-phone hybrids had been around since the 90s, and the Blackberry had been kicking around for a few years, but the iPhone wouldn't be introduced until 2007, and the 4G LTE standard wouldn't be released until 2009. While the Blackberry was popular with businesspeople and the PDA was out of style, smartphones were luxury toys for several years; they wouldn't become near-ubiquious until the mid-2010s. I didn't get my own smartphone until probably around the same time I got my 3DS, a full handheld generation later.

Browsing the software library for the Nintendo DS and DSi with that in mind is really interesting. Many titles released for the platform serve the same purposes that would be fulfilled by simple smartphone apps less than a decade later: planners and diaries, fitness trackers, calculators, language learning and SAT prep software, even a guide to the then-most-recent version of the driver's test in the UK. These proliferated with the release of the DSi's virtual store, but they existed even with the base model. You could go to a brick-and-mortar store and buy them on physical cartridges. (You might be wondering, "Why would you bother carrying those around over just buying a Blackberry?" You can't underestimate how expensive the service bills for a smartphone were before companies realized they were the most powerful spyware tool in history.)

There was never a time where every single businesswoman in New York carried a DS Lite, but adults did buy and use them, and a not insignificant portion of the DS's software library is aimed at a casual adult audience. Another niche covered mostly by smartphone games these days—games designed to be picked up and played in short sessions on-the-go, in places like waiting rooms and subway commutes.

Nintendo made crazy bank in the seventh console generation. Publications of the time talked about a console war between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but the real battle was between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 over the gamer demographic. Nintendo was producing hardware for a niche who would quietly disappear once smartphone sales began ballooning by hundreds of millions per year over the course of the early 2010s.

After the failure of the Wii U, Nintendo's marketing strategy pivoted again, though I doubt they'll ever completely abandon their family-friendly image. Currently beat out only by the PS2 and the DS, the Nintendo Switch may very well climb to a status as the best-selling console of all time before the end of its lifespan, but the "gamer" demographic is much bigger than it was two decades ago at the dawn of the DS. As more and more devices become consolidated into the Swiss army knife the smartphone has become, consoles can only carve out a role as dedicated gaming machines.

I'm not sure we'll ever see anything like the Nintendo DS or the Wii again. I think they're worth looking back on for their uniqueness in that way as much as they are for the more celebrated parts of their libraries.

Dear Jaehyun,

I don't like to start this letter with the sadness but I sincerely miss you. I know that you kept in touch with us through the letters and your Insta stories, telling us that you're doing ok and that you even made some new friends at the training camp.

I remember when you told us how you became friends with a pro gamer and how you even complained that your new friend was much more famous than you. Must admit, I snorted. Only Kim Jaehyun would have been able to make a friends with a pro gamer and acting shocked in the exact moment he would have discovered that he's more famous. But don't worry, I'll try to make N.Flying much more famous here in my country by using the "being annoying", technique here. I might fail, but at least I tried 😌

But despite all these little moments you shared with us, I feel that something is empty. It looks like that I endured much more easily Dongsung and Hun's enlistments but yours...it seems that I have a fresh wound that it didn't heal completely.

Maybe I also know why.

I'll sound a little corny here, I know, but I remember how the first N.Flying gifs I reblogged here were yours. I was trying to recognise every member at the time and you immediately caught my attention. I was...fascinated by you, I guess? Your big smile, your funny attitude, how youthful you are, all of these qualities immediately caught me.

I always associated N.Flying's funny and chaotic side with you. If someone will ask me which is the funniest member I'll immediately say "It's the drummer, Jaehyun!" and I would immediately send your compilations, whether it's about you or just what you do in 2Idiots.

I also love how much direct and energetic you are. I remember when I watched the little videos from the DWUW tour and how loudly you cheered N.Fias at the end of each concert. And I love how you immediately express your opinions without almost any filter. It's something that probably I'll never be able to do and it's one of your best qualities of yours. I'll always appreciate that.

And also how can I forget about your little princess Deokbae. It's been a while since I saw a pic with her, I hope she's ok. That adorable shiba inu is part of the N.Flying family too.

Well, it seems there are many things that I missed about you and the fact that I need to wait almost two years before seeing them again maybe makes my heart ache a little. we all know kris can play the piano. but consider the following: 

noelle plays the guitar. she’s been playing since she was little because her mother wanted her to learn an instrument and noelle wanted to learn the same instrument her sister was playing (dess learned guitar from rudy). she inherited her father’s old acoustic guitar after everything with dess goes down, but she doesn’t really feel comfortable playing it because of all of the Emotional Baggage. so, as a christmas present, her parents get her an electric guitar and an amp. she usually only plays when her mom isn’t home because she knows how noise travels through the house, and she teaches herself a lot of metal songs (to impress susie, mostly, but also bc she’s genuinely a metalhead and has been for years) 

susie starts to learn the bass when she becomes friends w kris. not like they know how to play, but the dark world provides a plethora of musically-inclined people that susie never would’ve known before. specifically, i think it’d be funny if ralsei knew how to play string instruments? he probably plays some form of a lyre, but once you know one vaguely-guitar-shaped instrument you know them all. the reason susie picks a bass, rather than a guitar, is because she likes how it sounds. low and funky; the bass lurks in the background of every song, providing ample support to the much louder guitar riffs and vocal performances. and, in finding herself in this friend group she is starting to slowly accept as family, she realizes she rather likes not having to always be the loudest person in the group and that supporting can actually be...pretty badass. (plus she finds a bass for cheap on Monster Ebay, so she’s working with what she got) 

berdly is a percussionist. this is HIGHLY indulgent because i used to play the drums, but i also feel like drums work surprisingly well for berdly? they’re more tactile and reliant on rhythm, which berdly would have more of an affinity for (being an avid gamer; a hobby that requires tactile use of your fingers). if hometown highschool had a marching band, berdly would be the drumline captain. he just has that vibe. he just screams percussionist in the high school band to me, i really can’t explain it. i also think it gives berdly the opportunity to really let loose in a way that he doesn’t allow himself to do. being the “smart kid” doesn’t allot for a lot of opportunities to go crazy or goof off, but sitting in front of his drumset for an hour or two a night gives him the privacy to really spread his wings (both literally and figuratively). he picks up a pair of drumsticks from the school when they Attempted to have a band class, and just...kept them when the course ended up falling through. his one and only School Crime. eventually, his father notices berdly drumming beats on everything and decides to buy him a snare, which then spirals into berdly being gifted a full drumset for his 15th birthday. it sits in the half-finished basement, along with a lot of the family’s storage, and berdly takes care in making sure his drums are the nicest thing in that room.

Backstory

Gabriella was born in São Paulo during a visit to Brazil at the home of Robert's sister (Elena Testaburger), during the Carnival. They returned to Colorado soon after and then Marian discovered she was pregnant again. Wendy was born prematurely, with seven months old, but all was well for now... they grew up together for a while. Three years later, little Gabriella started to get sick. As no doctor knew what she had, she returned to Brazil to be medicated there. So she went to live with her aunt and her parents eventually forgot about her cos...well... It’s South Park. They only remembered her about ten years later, when Wendy accidentally found old tapes in the basement and demanded to know who was that girl by her side. Curious to know how the girl was, her parents called Elena and demanded that she return her daughter if she hadn't died. Gabriella returned to South Park the next day, with a Brazilian accent and allergic rhinitis from the cold. Strangely enough, her illness was measles.

Hobbys

Gabriella's fave hobby is drawing, but she is more often portrayed as an otaku, gamer, who spends all day in the bedroom and reading manga. She also has a strong passion for reading and cosplay and is often seen searching for fanfics on the internet (mainly yaoi). As much as she denies it, she also loves dancing to the sound of Britney Spears. When Britney dies, Gabriella has an existential crisis, so Wendy helps her find other singers and bands to satisfy her. She loves music.

Wendy:

Both fight all the time, but they are always there to support each other. Not even Gabriella seems to be the oldest, as she is always portrayed as the most sentimentally weak. Wendy defends her from everything that bothers her.

Kenny:

Kenny is her boyfriend. On the first day of class, Cartman reported that Kenny was looking at her breasts, and that got him with a fucking shame. She didn't care much and wanted to talk to him later, though he ran off. She went after him and ended up getting into a crossroad, not seeing the car at high speed. Kenny pushed her and was run over. The girl saw his guts flying and was terrified home, without even being able to tell her parents. She didn’t forget the next day. His biggest surprise was to see him the next day alive. She told him what she saw, wondering if she wasn’t going crazy. Kenny was euphoric and called her for a date. They got to a restaurant and then to a carnival where they met better. At the end of the date he gave her first kiss and soon they started dating.

Heidi:

Heidi is her best friend. They always watch anime and play video games together. When Heidi said she liked Cartman as a secret, Gabriella never told anyone.

Kyle:

Kyle is kind of an advisor to her. They always do their homework together and always support each other. She loves playing basketball with him and is always at his house for dinner. Kyle's mom would love for them to date.

Butters:

Butters was the first boy Gabriella met at school. She treats him as her little brother and whenever someone bullies him, she defends him.

Craig:

They were fighting and she thought Craig hated her. When Kenny betrayed her to Tammy Warner, Craig was the first to console her, something she thought was odd. About the same time Tweek found Tucker's diary, which told him that he was in love with her. When she found out, they started dating. After Kenny realized what he did and tried to get back with Gabriella, he was very pissed to find out she was dating Craig. He called him to fight and that made Gabriella break up with Craig. After a while she ended up dating Kenny again, but Craig remained her best friend. Nowadays Craig is gay and she can not get closer to him because of the Asian girls who hate her and want to hit her, though they still like each other in secret.

Cartman:

Cartman is always practicing bullying with her because she is Latina, though they come together for some causes. She doesn’t really care if he is cursing her because she thinks he only does it because he has no father and wants to get attention. She usually calls him Eric, however when she really gets mad at him, calls him Cartman or fatass.

Personality

Most of the time Gabriella is a cheerful girl who likes to be friends with everyone. Although everyone thinks she's a right girl, she's a pervert who likes to write fanfictions and read yaoi. She is also insecure because of her appearance and lives by hiding her freckles with makeup. Gaby is intelligent, and one of the best students in the classroom, but she is most recognized with the otaku girl in the classroom. When she is angry, she usually turns red and can act like Kyle. (Inspiration For Muse): Funnily enough this is actually the second reboot of this character and his design. But the beginning inspiration was my now shelved DreamWorks Dragons x Hazbin Hotel Crossover OC: Plixus Dreadmire. Here's to hoping this one sticks.

(Story Behind URL): Actually not much really. Ash had a lot of dragon like aesthetics when he his in his normal form. He was born in a very ancient Ancient Egypt. And his father is a being of Chaos. So it kind of fits for him.

My YCCTEAM’s Wireless Switch Pro Controller for Nintendo Switch/Switch Life Pics - Part 2 (Unboxing)

I’m back to every followers, friends, and hoping gamers as I’m taking on part 2 for my first new wireless pro gaming controller for my Switch system. I wanted to make it as a beginning though when it comes to unboxing; just to have a full look on my controller. Anyways, let’s get started into part 2. (Sorry for making it a late post, though.)

Note: I used some PicsArt edited to collage one of my photos together so that way I won’t having trouble to only show 10 photos each due to the Tumblr’s limitations.

* This is a beginning photos when I finally got my first wireless pro controller from my family gave me back in September 18th, 2020 at 4:20 P.M.

* After I taking down the Amazon box, behold of what it is the box of the wireless pro controller itself. It’s white so nothing else, but it looks nice.

* Finally that I’m almost about to unwrapped my gaming controller just as I thought to imagine to unwrapped my official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The controller was wrapped in bubbles, but it also came with the USB Type-C cable for charging. Same goes for my Xbox controller and my other USB charging cable, but I’m gonna save it on future posting soon.

* Here it is that I revealing my first wireless pro controller on first hand....almost though as soon I want to take off the white foam from the analog sticks and a D-Pad. Same goes with this green note attached, but it looks important so thankfully I took a pic of it before even to bother throw away so guilty. ^^*

* On the back from the gaming controller looks and feels nice when I gripped it on my hands. Placing the two textures underneath with my middle fingers really smoothes of what it looks little bit like skins. As for my palms when holding it, It also feels nice with the handles as I thought it’ll be; saying the fact I looked it’s details for the handles that had “Texture Anti-Slip” from Amazon.com. Not bad. *thumbs up* Also there’s a sticker in it that shows the model for my controller and it’s battery capacity. Hoping I can show the battery test results soon that if the battery capacity good or something.

* Each side of my wireless pro controller with the handles that had “Texture Anti-Slip” Look not bad.

* Now for the top of my wireless pro controller as I almost gonna removed the white foam and a green note later on. It’s show the L/ZL and R/ZL Buttons that I’ll be using it for gaming purpose. Also it had a plug for my USB Type-C cable to connect charging when if the indicator was full. Plus there’s the reset button that I can disconnect/connect my controller to my Switch console whether I wanted to choose.

* I removed the white foam and green note from the front of my wireless pro controller, but not before take a pic of this green note that I’ll be keeping it if I’ll forget how to charge it properly. And yes if I’ll learn to avoid battery damage.

* You seen from my first post about my late birthday gift reveal, but that was in first look front of my wireless pro controller to go. Looks the same of what it is to compared to the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are: Two analog sticks, D-Pad button, Four function control keys, Plus and Minus buttons, screenshot, and HOME button when I press these. It works when I turned on the Switch console, but wishing I can show in videos soon.

* I’ll stop it at the final pic to show. It’s random, but there’s the instruction manual that I been reading through it if I’m ready to learn to set up my pro controller. Good thing that I learn to set up my pro controller and it’s features. No problem that I can read it again, though.

That’s all I can show you in part 2 for my Wireless Pro Controller for my Nintendo Switch console, but yet it’s not over when I’m finished by my review coming up. For now in part 3 that I can do in comparison with my other gaming controllers that I got. Someone asked me why do I go by gothicmisha as my online presence....well, it’s because my first name is sharmesha, Misha is my nickname and I’ve been goth since 1986.

Yes, I said 1986! I’m fucking middle aged and you don’t meet too many goth black women who have been goth as long as I have. My 2nd oldest child, who will be 21 in November, is goth just like me and all of my daughters are witches just like me as well

(I have 3 living daughters as of now. One of my daughters were murdered in 2010 at the age of 9)

My son is the odd duck but he’s a gamer just like the rest of us and has an obsession for Sonic the hedgehog and mario games 🤣

So yeah the name gothicmisha is not just a name, it’s who I am. I was 7 years old in 1986 and obsessed with bands like The Cure, Bahaus, Siouxe and the Banchees and Madonna. I had the first body piercing at my high school. My mom got my nose pierced for my 15th birthday. I pierced my own lip with a safety pin and some novocaine. I became a witch when I was 13 and 28 years later, I’ve been the high priestess and leader of my coven for the last 15 years.

Wow, I didn’t think the explanation of my online name was going to be this long 🤣
