Saint George (1471), by Bernt Notke — photo by Tuomas Vitikainen
This Bernt’s masterpiece was commissioned in 1417 by the Swedish regent Sten Sture the Elder, conceived both as a commemorative monument to his triumph at the Battle of Brunkeberg and as the intended site of his eternal rest. Today, this masterwork is enshrined within the venerable walls of Storkyrkan, in the heart of Stockholm.
This sculpture is an examplar of technical ingenuity and artistic ambition, fashioned from a diverse array of materials. From twine delicately employed to render the veins upon the steed, to genuine antlers forming the dragon’s formidable spines, every element contributes to a striking verisimilitude. At its core, lies intricately carved wood, richly polychromed to achieve a vivid lifelikeness, imbuing the piece with a dramatic immediacy.
The scene captures a moment of heightened intensity: the dragon buries its claws into the soft flank of the horse, which rears in visceral ahony. Yet, in that gesture of anguish, the saint rises triumphant—his armour, resplendent in hues of gold and celestial blue, gleams beneath the gilded trappings of the steed. It’s a tableau that evokes not only the divine vanquishing the infernal, but also the poignant truth that the conquest of evil seldom occurs without the price of suffering. In stark contrast, the creature of chaos (dark in palette and humbled in posture) twists and contorts amidst the scattered relics of those previously fallen.
