Marianne Vos filled a rare void in her stellar palmares by taking her first-ever win at Gent-Wevelgem. It was also the first-ever victory for her new women's team Jumbo-Visma, and she said she felt the pressure to win after learning that her teammate Wout van Aert won the men's race earlier on Sunday.
The Jumbo-Visma leader also moved into the overall lead of the Women's WorldTour and brings confidence into next weekend's Tour of Flanders.
"It is great to take this victory into the coming week, but that will be a different story in the Tour of Flanders," said Vos."You have to be there, if it went well today, that doesn’t mean it will go well next week, too, but it gives a lot of courage."
Vos won Gent-Wevelgem as she was fastest to the line in the sprint of a reduced peloton, beating Lotte Kopecky (Liv Racing) and Lisa Brennauer (Ceratizit-WNT).
"I like to race in Flanders, you always have to be at the front, and certainly in a race like Gent-Wevelgem everything can happen. And then in a finish like today, well, you have to be there, and the team did a fantastic work to get me into that position. Then it was still about timing. I started my sprint and thought, oh, it is still a long way, but [the wind] was to my advantage."

"I feel good and had a good preparation for the season," Vos said. "It is nice to go into a race with confidence, but still everything has to fall into place, and it is great that it worked out at Get-Wevelgem. It gives confidence for the next weeks, but first I want to enjoy this win."

Jour 6: Jeudi 13 août - 158km - Tiens ! Voilà le Morvan !
“Je me lève, je te bouscule, tu ne dérailles pas, comme d’habituuuuudeu”. Je quitte cette maison bourgeoise comme un voleur au petit matin (bon j’ai quand même payé la veille - je ne suis pas mauvais garçon). Stef m’annonce un objectif - Autun je crois - mais depuis hier et la dernière heure difficile, voire dangereuse avec la fatigue, j’ai changé d’optique - toujours s’adapter tu sauras.  Je ne veux plus me fixer un point d’arrivée. J’ai calculé qu’avec l’avance que j’ai pris sur ma montre, 140 à 150 kils par jours suffisent pour finir dans l’étang - pardon - à Mendionde le samedi 22. Mon objectif est clair maintenant. Je connais mieux mes forces, mes faiblesses et surtout mes envies. Je veux arriver dans les 15 jours et en bon état. Je ne veux pas forcer - pas envie de trainer une tendinite pendant trois mois ou une quelconque fracture de fatigue. J’ai envie d’être bien. Toute l’année j’ai fait du gainage et du yoga pour aller dans ce sens : me dépasser certes, mais pas me terrasser. Stef acquiesce, ça me rassure d’avoir l’aval du maître.
En route donc pour Quarré-Les-tombes. Je commence par un énorme arrêt boulange à la sortie d’Avalon pour prendre des forces et du ravitaillement. Cette étape, on m’a prévenu qu’elle allait être rude. Pourtant, ça va être une des plus belles et sans doute celle où j’ai été le plus costaud. J’ai avalé le Morvan comme le repas de la veille et en profitant pleinement de chaque instant. J’ai adoré ! C’était technique mais pas trop pentu, c’était beau et j’avais la grosse grosse niaque.

Je prends le temps d’une photo symbole et d’un petit texto pour l’anniv de mon grand frère et c’est parti. La forêt est fraiche et belle. Ça monte ça descend mais ça passe bien. L’autre avantage de la canicule c’est que tout au long de cette French on ne souffrira que très peu de la boue (à part Sofiane dans le Gers mais il n’avait qu’à pas aller aussi vite). Ici pourtant quelques passages bien humides mais rien de rédhibitoire.

Ça y est ! CP2 ! Je retrouve les compères de l’orga. Clément s’est rétamé la veille et abhorre une plaie à la jambe comme s’il s’était frotté à un ours, ou plutôt l‘inverse. Je suis bien content de les retrouver ces moniteurs de ma colo. On échange quelques conneries autour d’un café, j’envoie des c��urs à ma chérie et je pars faire le plein au Proxi du coin (loué soit le Proxi) car le Morvan c’est pas la rue Sainte Catherine.

Je repars pour ce qui à mon goût restera une des plus belles sections de cette French : une longue traversée en forêt le long d’un ruisseau exhalant sa fraicheur. Je croise des marcheurs qui ont tous l’air sereins.  Je ne saurais vraiment dire où j’étais ni ce que j’ai vu exactement mais, sûr, je m’en suis pleinement imprégné à ma manière. Sur une épreuve de longue distance comme celle-ci on se dit souvent qu’on ne va pas profiter des lieux par où on passe mais c’est faux. On n’en profite simplement pas de la même manière. C’est vrai qu’on ne se pose pas, c’est vrai que parfois j’aurais bien fait un plouf ou pris le temps de m’allonger nu dans la mousse, mais les contraintes qu’on s’impose nous permettent de vivre autrement les lieux où l’on passe. Le lieu est à la fois la contrainte et l’espace de liberté. On en comprend certains ressorts inaccessibles à celui qui flâne. Le vélo a de ça qu’on n’avance pas assez vite pour passer vraiment à côté de ce qu’on traverse.

Je fais une pause bien agréable près de Saint-Brisson au bistrot du parc. Une omelette et une assiette de crudité bienvenues, mangées près d’un parisien qui a bien voulu accepter que je m’installe avec lui à la dernière place disponible. On en profite pour discuter, il me questionne sur mon aventure et il m’apprend qu’il a une maison qui finit de se construire dans le coin, son havre de paix - tu m’étonnes. Il est abasourdi par les distances qu’on peut avaler, lui qui pourtant se déplace à vélo quotidiennement sur Paris. Je lui dis qu’il y a encore 4 ans je n’étais pas au courant que ça se faisait de dépasser les 150kils à vélo. Quand Stef est venu en vacances chez moi l’été 2016, il se préparait pour la première édition de la French. Il m’avait prêté un magazine 200 et m’avait un peu parlé de tout ça. Je l’avais suivi pendant le mois d’août sur sa French et le virus m’a pris. L’année d’après je tapais mon premier 200 tout seul, puis une confluence Genève-Lyon avec Chilkoot, puis une semaine mémorable de Love Zig-Zag tour en juillet. C’était parti, ça ne me quittera pas.
Je repars et je roule, je roule, je roucoule. Il y a des moments où ton cerveau débranche littéralement. Tu regardes ta montre, tu as roulé trois heures sans t’en rendre compte. La seconde partie de la journée se passe ainsi. Je ne me préoccupe pas d’où je suis, je ne regarde pas encore mon compteur, je sais juste que je veux caler mes 140-150kils minimum et je verrai plus tard où j’en serai.
Autun arrive au loin alors que je ne m’y attends pas. Incroyable. C’est sûrement une des seules fois où je suis arrivé dans un lieu “en avance” par rapport à ma montre, simplement parce que je ne l’ai pas regardée. Jour béni, qui est resté une référence, même si je ne retrouverai pas d’aussi bonnes sensations sur le reste du parcours à part peut-être dans le Gers.
A Autun je retrouve Thomas et Karim et j’en suis le premier étonné. Ils accusent un peu le coup de la journée, mais ils ont surtout dû faire un long arrêt dans un magasin de cycle où les mécanos n’avaient pas l’air super réactifs. Thomas a crevé et en a profité pour se faire remonter le tubeless, Karim, qui souffre toujours, a décidé d’acheter une nouvelle selle, pari risqué mais qui s’est avéré payant. Karim c’est presque une image d’Épinal sur un vélo, celle du jeune fou qui part sans trop se poser de questions. Il est super chargé, avec tente et sac à dos. Avant la French, il n’a apparemment jamais fait de grosses distances. Pour lui 150kils c’était de l’ordre du fantasme et pourtant qu’est-ce qu’il roule bien ! Thomas est aussi un pur Vététiste, pas un cycliste habitué à la longue distance même s’il a fait quelques longues étapes de reconnaissances en amont. Je vais avoir l’occasion de voir que ces deux-là vont monter en puissance tout au long de l’épreuve, parce qu’ils ont un gros mental qui leur a permis de passer les premiers jours. Karim a souffert, a hésité à continuer ce jour-même encore, mais finalement il a su s’envoler de belle manière. Il ne le sait pas encore à ce moment, mais il est bien plus fort que nous et il va peu à peu opérer une remontada impressionnante. Thomas, force tranquille, à son rythme dans les montées, mais imperturbable, saura toujours mettre le coup de rein qu’il faut pour se mettre au mieux à la fin de ses étapes. Super gestion.
Je fais le plein de carburant, fais regonfler mes pneus au compresseur dans le Bouclard et je repars avant les deux compères pour profiter des jambes que je sens encore bonnes. Après Autun il y a une bonne montée et on finit par pousser le vélo dans les chemins. Karim me rejoint plus loin, puis on se retrouve à rouler à trois, puis je les quitte à nouveau. Je décide de me poser à Mèvres, seul spot civilisé envisageable à cette heure-ci avant un bon petit moment.
Pause restau et grosse tranche de steak. Thomas et Karim me rejoignent et on peut prendre le temps d’échanger sur les quelques jours qu’on a fait à distance. Les deux ont mal dormi à Quarré-les-tombes la veille au soir, avec du vent et de la pluie et un divider qui les a fait chier super tôt en faisant tourner la roue libre de son vélo pour faire les réglages pendant que les autres dormaient - sympa. Honte à toi ! Si tu lis ces mots et que tu te reconnais, sache que c’est mal, c’est très mal mon garçon.
Je demande au patron où on pourrait bivouaquer. Je lui parle d’un préau d’école que j’ai vu, mais il me dit qu’il faudrait demander l’autorisation au Maire, surtout que la concierge vit dans l’école (information très importante que Karim et Thomas regretteront de ne pas avoir imprimée). Il me parle du stade de foot et je pars m’y installer avant les autres. Il fait nuit noire et avant d’arriver au stade je croise un mec torse nu qui dit à son chien de ne pas m’approcher car je suis peut être un extra-terrestre. J’ai pas l’impression qu’il rigole et je me dis que ce n’est peut-être pas le signe que le coin est un bon endroit pour dormir. Ça doit manquer d’oxygénation dans le coin. Au stade je ne trouve pas de robinet, mais il y a une sorte de grange qui doit servir d’abri pour les supporters. C’est crade et il y a des bouts de verre, mais je décide de m’y caler. Bon choix car il commence à pleuvoir. Peut-être pas si bon car c’est sans doute après cette nuit que mon matelas passera en mode « crevaison lente » avec la nécessiter de le regonfler toutes les 3 heures.
Thomas et Karim n’apparaissent pas, j’ai peur qu’ils arrivent tard et me réveillent en début de sommeil. Je regarde sur Map Progress et je vois qu’il se sont installés sous le préau de l’école, sans doute à cause de la pluie, ne sachant pas qu’il y avait un abri au stade. Karim m’expliquera que leur nuit a été pourrie car ils se sont fait réveiller par les phares de la concierge braqués sur eux aux alentours de minuit, et n’ont pas compris ce qui leur arrivait.
De mon côté la nuit fut bonne, le stade de foot devenant une infrastructure à cocher pour les bivouacs à venir.

And because we’re crazy kids, after coming home from Punta Cana (158km round trip) we decided to head a hour away to Santo Domingo for a 9pm movie (234 round trip) for a grand total of almost 250 miles today ✌🏻
We saw How to Train Your Dragon 3 and it was absolutely worth how tired I’m gonna be tomorrow (it’s 1am) 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

We’re in Da Nang by 2pm and after booking in to our hotel which is beach fronting and only £18 a night we hired a pair of lounges £1.20 and ordered 2 beer s 60p each. The sea was actually warm no ohh and arr bliss. Total mileage today was 158km.

not a gentle thing.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. (Acts 2.2, NIV)
The wind howls and the Holy Spirit whispers, “This is what I’m like sometimes, too.”
Because the Holy Spirit gets boiled down to a gentle breeze, don’t they? Something calm, something soothing, something that whispers and reassures and is a balm to our skin on a scorching day. As if we can’t handle a God that can bowl us over when, really, what could be a more accurate description?
The wind whistles and sings in the night, daring us to ignore it.
The wind stirs up still waters, stirs up our hearts.
The wind tears apart a landscape, ripping up trees, because the earth needs to change shape just as our perceptions of reality do.
While the Brier was happening in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 2017, winds gusted up to 158km/h. I have a vivid memory of a woman’s suitcase being ripped from her hands as she crossed the street and she leaned against the wind, struggling to stay on her feet.
The wind doesn’t just allow us to move at our own pace. Sometimes, like with Jonah, or Abraham, or Joseph the husband of Mary, or any other of the countless examples--sometimes it makes us move.
Sometimes it makes us move, and it changes everything.
