Looking for LDS & LGBTQ+ study participants

Tyler Lefevor and his team at Utah State University are looking for active Latter-day Saints who are LGBTQ/SSA for a research study to help understand (a) what helps them experience belonging in the church and (b) how they understand doctrines around gender and sexuality. Participants will be compensated $20 for a ~1 hour virtual interview.

This research has been approved by USU’s Institutional Review Board (#14060).

There wasn’t any research looking into the mental health of people who identify as both LGBTQ+ and as members of the LDS church, so Tyler Lefevor decided to study this.

He is nearly four years into a 10-year study following hundreds of current and former LDS church members who also identify as LGBTQ+. The two previous waves of survey data were collected in 2020 and 2022, with the third wave of data now being collected in January 2024.

The idea is to track how mental health changes over time—how does a person’s mental health change if they lean more into one identity over the other? How does that balance fluctuate? How can LGBTQ+ LDS church members be happiest and healthiest? 

I have posted a few times about Tyler Lefevor and his work. In October 2021, he presented his data on LGBTQ+ members' experiences with their bishops & stake presidents.

In January 2022 he put together a chart to help LDS leaders in their interactions with their queer members.

In May 2023 his article was published about the impact of changes in Religion on health among sexual minority Mormons.

In October 2023, Lift+Love put out slides based on Dr. Lefevor's work about what responses LGBTQ+ people received from their Bishops did they find not helpful
