FACTS ABOUT THE AIRFORCE:

1.       The first aviation force in the world was the Aviation Militaire of the French Army formed in 1910, which eventually became L'Armée de l'Air.

2.        The British Royal Air Force was the first independent air force in the world.The RAF was founded on 1 April 1918 by amalgamation the British Army's Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.

3.       Germany was the first country to organize regular air attacks on enemy infrastructure with the Luftstreitkräfte. In World War I, it used its zeppelins (airships) to drop bombs on British cities.

4.       Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.

5.       The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces and was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire.

6.       Apart from the four wars with Pakistan and one with China other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai.

7.       The fighter plane “supermarine spitfire” designed by R J Mitchell, chief designer at Super marine Aviation Works, along with Hurricane fighters in the RAF saved Britain in the battle of Britain against the onslaught of German Air Force Luftwaffe and probably the world in World War Two.

8.       The German Airforce Luftwaffe along with its three army groups attacked Soviet Union on 22nd of June, 1941. The Soviet records claim that German Air Force destroyed 2000 aircrafts of the Red Air Force(Soviet Union) within three days!

9.       Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), also known as the "Red Baron", was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories.

10.   In Six Days War, 1967 IAF (Israeli Air Force) carried out a pre-emptive airstrike against the Egyptian Air Force and destroyed nearly all of the aircrafts in Egyptian Air Force for the loss of 19 of its aircrafts.

11.   In the 1971 Indo- Pakistan War, Pakistan carried airstrikes with 50 planes and attacked eleven airfields in North Western India. The IAF(Indian Air Force) in response flew more than 4,000 sorties(an attack made by troops coming out from a position of defence) and PAF(Pakistan Air Force ) assumed a defensive posture for the rest of the war.

12.   Between 1964 and 1973, the U.S. dropped two million tons of bombs on Laos, nearly equal to the 2.1 million tons of bombs the U.S. dropped on Europe and Asia during all of World War II, making Laos the most heavily bombed country in history relative to the size of its population.

13.   The Korean War was the first war in which jet aircraft played the central role in air combat. The Korean War marked a major milestone for rotorcraft, featuring the first large-scale deployment of helicopters for medical evacuation.

14.   In Algerian War (1954-1962) between the France and its colony Algeria, French forces utilized the helicopter for the first time in a ground attack role in order to pursue and destroy fleeing FLN (National Liberation Front) guerrilla units.

15.   A paratrooper is a military parachutist—someone trained to parachute into an operation, and usually functioning as part of an airborne force. In World War 2 German used paratroopers in attacking Greece with considerable losses. In 1940, in the battle of France, German Paratroopers landed in the Fort Eben-Emael (Strongest fort in Belgium) and it helped Germany defeat France and lower countries.

16.   In the year 1942, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle of the United States Army Air Forces led and Planned the “Dolittle Raid.” Sixteen bombers(aircrafts that drop bombs over military installations and Industrial centres) were launched without fighter escort from the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier USS Hornet and did little material damage to Japan but boosted public morale in United States and dispelled the notion of Japan`s invulnerability. At that time the fighter and bomber planes did not had such long range flying capability hence  they had to be carried by aircraft carriers.

17.    In Kargil War, the IAF launched operation Safed Sagar and achieved complete air dominance. The IAF pilots were strictly ordered not to cross LOC at any cost to avoid escalation. Yet they targeted the enemy positions so effectively that they were completely cut off from their base camps and not able to evacuate injured soldiers. The mirage 2000 aircraft was known to be the aircraft that turned the tide of the war.

18.   On 26th of February, 2019 IAF aircrafts crossed LOC an targeted a terrorist camp in Balakot, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It was the first major air strike by IAF after 1971 and most successfully carried out. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthman displayed uncommon courage.

19.   On the 6th of the June(D Day), the first day of the operation Overlord, 1200 planes used for airborne assault, 5000 vessels, and 1,60,000 troops participated in what has been called the largest and most complex military operations in the World history. It opened another front in the continental Europe between Allies and Germans. The liberation of the France soon followed by defeat of Germany in WW2.

20.   In the battle of Atlantic during World War 2 German submarines(known as U-boats) caused heavy  damage to allied shipping which was the Britain`s lifeline to sustain war effort. An extraordinary incident occurred on 27 August 1941 about 80 miles south of Iceland. Squadron Leader J. Thompson sighted the U-boat on the surface, immediately dived at his target, and released four depth charges as the submarine crash dived. The U-boat surfaced again, a number of crewmen appeared on deck, and Thompson engaged them with his aircraft's guns. The crewmen returned to the conning tower while under fire. A few moments later, a white flag and a similarly coloured board were displayed.  An Air Force pilot had captured a submarine with its crew!

SC allowed entry of women in Sabrimala temple The Supreme Court on 28 September 2018 allowed entry of women of all ages into the Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in Kerala. The SC said banning entry of women to Kerala’s Sabarimala temple is gender discrimination and the practice violates rights of Hindu women. The court gave its verdict on a clutch of pleas challenging the ban on entry of women at Sabarimala in Kerala. ‘Incredible India’ Mobile App launched The Union Tourism Minister, K.J. Alphons on the World Tourism Day launched the ‘Incredible India’ Mobile App. The app showcases India as a holistic destination, revolving around major experiences, such as spirituality, heritage, culture, yoga, wellness etc. The app has been developed by Tech Mahindra. The app is equipped with features to assist the traveler in each phase of their journey. Indian railways to launch Smart coaches The Indian Railways is set to launch the ‘Make in India’ Smart coaches. The smart coaches have several new features like black box and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered CCTVs, matching international standards, Wi-Fi hotspot information system.  The coaches have been equipped with sensors that can detect defects on bearings, wheels, and the railway track and gives constant inputs to those in the control room to avoid accidents, carry out maintenance, and to improve the efficiency of operations. A water-level indicator technology to know whether the water in the coach is sufficient and when it needs to be filled is also available. The maiden smart coach was unveiled at the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh as part of launching 100 such trains in a pilot project to improve the safety and security of commuters and to boost efficiency. Govt launched Agmark online system The government launched an online platform for processing applications related to quality certification mark ‘Agmark’ for agricultural products. Agmark is certification mark that assures conformity to a set of standards approved by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection. In the new online application system, there are provisions for online receipt of fees from the applicants. IISc Bangalore named India‘s Best University in Times World University rankings 2019 Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has been named the top Indian institute for the fifth straight year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and was placed in the 251-300 bracket. IIT Indore (351-400) was placed second, ahead of IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee. Globally, Oxford University continues to hold the first place, followed by Cambridge, Stanford, and MIT. National Tourism Awards 2016-17 Tourism Minister K J Alphons presented National Tourism Awards 2016-17 in various segments of the Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality. Andhra Pradesh bagged the first prize in state category for comprehensive development of tourism followed by Kerala. Rajasthan and Goa jointly shared the third prize. India will be the host country for official World Tourism Day celebrations in 2019. India ranks 96th on Economic Freedom Index India’s ranks 96th among 162 countries on Economic Freedom in the World, released by the Centre for Civil Society (CCS). India ranked 98th on the index in the previous year’s report. Hong Kong and Singapore again topped the index with the first and the second country respectively. The 2018 report is based on data from 2016. PV Sindhu only sportsperson in Forbes India‘s Maiden List of 22 ‘Tycoons of Tomorrow‘ Badminton player and Olympian PV Sindhu is the only sportsperson featuring in the Forbes India‘s maiden ‘tycoons of tomorrow‘ list of 22 young achievers in the fields of business, acting and sports.  Other prominent names in the list are * Karan Adani, chief executive of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone; * Anant Goenka, group executive director of Indian Express; * Ashni Biyani, managing director of Future Consumer; * Birla scion Ananya Birla, founder of Svatantra Microfinance, co-founder, CuroCarte and co-founder of Mpower; * Radha Kapoor Khanna, the daughter of Yes Bank CEO Rana Kapoor; * Ritesh Agarwal of Oyo Rooms.  PM Modi Inaugurated Parakram Parv Exhibition In Jodhpur Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Parakram Parv exhibition at the military station in Jodhpur to mark the second anniversary of the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army across the LoC.  On September 29, 2016, the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes on seven terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) as a response to an attack on its base in Uri. Konark Corps is organizing this three days exhibition on Indian Army’s Combat Capability on the occasion of 2nd anniversary of Surgical Strikes.  2nd Hornbill’s Flight International Race The 2nd edition of the cycle race, ‘Dalmia MTB Arunachal; Hornbill’s Flight International Race’ will be held on 14-22 November. The cycling track extends from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh to Mechuka in the West Siang district about 650 km away. More than 100 cyclists from over 10 countries will participate. The total prize money for the race is of Rs 22.5 lakhs. 8th Asian Yoga Sports Championship Begins In Thiruvananthapuram The 8th Asian Yoga Sports Championship organised by Asian Yoga Federation has begun in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally inaugurate the event. Nearly 450 participants representing 12 Asian countries showcasing their yoga skills will take part in the four-day event.  Yogaratna Awards will be given away to foreign delegates who were instrumental in popularising yoga in their respective countries. Noted Saudi yoga instructor Nouf Marwaai, who was recently awarded the Padma Shri, will also participate in the event.  India’s first flood forecast system launched The Kolkata Municipal Corporation, with the support of the Asian Development Bank launched the India’s first flood forecasting and early-warning system. The system will provide real-time data on inundation, rainfall intensity, temperature, air quality and other climate-related data. This will help policy-makers to make informed decisions during disasters. Rajni Kant Mishra is the new chief of BSF The government appointed Rajni Kant Mishra as the Director-General of Border Security Force (BSF). Rajni Kant Mishra is the 1984 batch Indian Police Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. At present, Rajni Kant Mishra is the head of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). He will head the BSF till August 31, 2019. Kavita Mahajan passed away in Pune Eminent Marathi litterateur and translator Kavita Mahajan passed away in Pune on 27 September 2018. She was the winner of 2011 Sahitya Akademi translation award. Her fluent translation from Urdu to Marathi of 17 short stories by Ismat Chugtai won her the 2011 Sahitya Akademi prize for best translation. Centre steps up grant for disaster fund The government of India has enhanced its contribution in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) from 75% to 90% with effect from April 2018. As per revised guidelines, the government of India will contribute 90% while states will contribute 10% to the relief fund. SDRF was established at the state level to meet the rescue and relief expenditure of disaster-affected states. Indo-Bangla border conference held in Mizoram A joint border conference was held between India and Bangladesh at Aizawl and delegates from both sides deliberated on the border issues between the two countries Brigadier General Zakir Ahmed, the Surveyor General of Bangladesh told media persons that a discussion was held regarding the demarcation of border between the two countries along Mizoram.
