(And typically, these are the clients you’ve done the most for or whose case is small enough you regret taking it in the first place). Or maybe you think of the client whose victory was your most hard-fought. Or perhaps you think of those clients you’ve represented who were the most injured by someone else’s negligence.
But whether you have warm fuzzy thoughts when you hear the word “clients,” or the word causes an instantaneous knot in your stomach, the truth is that your CLIENTS have the potential to be your firm’s biggest Marketing weapon. In fact, each and every client has the potential to be a mini marketer for your law firm. This is HUGE because now, more than ever, marketing your law firm isn’t about what you say about yourself – it’s about what others say about you.
Why is this so important NOW? Because in the post-pandemic world we live in your potential clients are more skeptical of ads than ever before. Advertisers are pouring more money than ever into advertisements to reach consumers. Your potential clients – the people you want to reach with your brand, are inundated with ads. Everywhere. As evidence of the social shift away from consumer ad trust, Shaffer noted that MILLIONS of people now have ad blockers on their devices. He’s correct. In 2020 alone, 73 million American internet users had installed some form of ad-blocking software, plugin, or browser on their web-enabled devices.
And according to recent eMarketer figures, American internet users blocking ads has increased a whopping 71.9% since 2014 and the trend is increasing every year. Even a few years ago, 1 in 4 internet users were blocking advertising on their devices and the trend is going up (Statista Research Dept Jan 14, 2021). And even if you aren’t spending tons on Digital Ads to market your firm, this trend is important for helping you understand consumer behavior.
If you want potential clients to sign with you and not your competition, you need to understand their motivations. According to Shaffer, a surprising two-thirds of our Marketing occurs without us. Effective Marketing isn’t about you telling others about yourself – it’s what others are telling each other about you. And that makes sense, doesn’t it?  
Think about it – When you purchase something on Amazon, what is one of the first things you look at? For most of us, after the basic product description, we look to the customer reviews. We know what the manufacturer says about itself will sound good. But what most of us want to know is, “What is the real deal about this product?” So, we scroll through the reviews, seeing who ranked the product with multiple stars and who gave it a 1-star bust. The good reviews give us confidence. The one stars give us pause and concern.
It’s the same with almost any product or service these days. Even our kids read the product and movie reviews first to see if the new game or movie is any good before making a consumer decision. We all trust what others say about goods or services MORE than what the company says about itself. And we trust the people we know more than the people we don’t know. We typically trust our friends and families more than we trust people we don’t know online or otherwise.
And here’s the kicker: Like it or not, your current and past clients are already mini marketers for your law firm. If they’ve had a positive experience with your firm, then they will share this with their friends and family when one of them needs a lawyer. Similarly, if they’ve had a bad experience, they will share that, too. And in many instances, a personal recommendation from your client to their friends or family will trump what that prospect may have seen online whether good or bad reviews.
Thus, if you are serious about Law Firm Growth, you want to amass as much social proof as you possibly and realistically can. You want 5-star Google reviews from each and every client and lots of them. Record short videos of your clients at the end of the case explaining how you helped them in a difficult time and push these simple (but credible) videos out on social media platforms. Obtain more professionally recorded testimonial videos to place on your firm’s website. And give your clients short forms to fill out too, asking them to state what they would tell their friends and family about your firm and what they liked most about your firm. You can also turn these written statements into videos with simple software like Lumen 5 to push out on your website and all social media platforms.
When possible, get this powerful social proof at settlement, right there in your office (just make sure the clients don’t use your firm’s internet to do it, or Google will punish you by assuming the legitimate review isn’t legitimate). Put processes in place to ensure that your staff understands how important these reviews are to your firm’s growth and credibility. Make sure they are reaching out to every client at the end of every case. Encourage your staff to reach out to their friends and family to obtain Google reviews from people that know your firm and like you, even if they haven’t yet needed to hire you.
Hold a contest in your firm with prizes for the staff member that obtains the most reviews. Weeks of Welcome The Department of Language Studies and the Arts will host a sing-a-long with the movie “The Greatest Showman,” at 7 p.m., Monday, August 20, in Selby Auditorium in Lewis Hall. Students are invited to join in the musical fun. The Office of Student Activities will greet new and returning Lions with two weeks’ worth of events during Weeks of Welcome. On the first day of classes, Tuesday, August 21, Student Activities will host a welcome back event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., near the Student Community Center. Student may get shirts spray painted, take first-day-of-school photos, and enjoy smoothies and ice pops. There will be events hosted by various campus groups throughout the first week. Getting started
To use WordPress to create an eCommerce website, you'll first have to pay for a domain name and web hosting. Most web hosting companies provide WordPress hosting with a one-click installation at affordable monthly and annual rates.
With WP’s easy-to-use interface, your online store can be set up quickly. The more information prepared ahead of time, the faster your store can be up and running. To this end, have your business name, logo, and tagline ready. Have your initial products named, with descriptions, categories, prices, and images prepared beforehand as much as possible. 
Install a Theme
Once WordPress is installed, you will need to select a theme. In simple terms, a theme is the appearance of your website that your audience sees.
WordPress defines a theme as:

How to install WooCommerce
Installing WooCommerce or any plugin is simple.
Log in to the WordPress dashboard.
Go to the Plugins section on the sidebar and click "Add New."
In the search bar, type "WooCommerce" and hit Enter. 
Click "Install Now" on WooCommerce.
Once the WooCommerce installation is complete, an activate button will appear. The activate button will launch a setup wizard to continue configuring your store's initial settings.

When a customer goes to the checkout of your shop, they are directed to your payment gateway. There they need to input their financial information or sign in to their account.
PayPal is a popular payment gateway available, but not everyone will use that. WooCommerce incredibly supports over 100 payment gateways. There are four default options in the Payments section to receive payments. These are:

To use most features of payment gateways, you must have an SSL certificate. The certificate ensures that all transactions and exchanges of financial information between you and your customer are safe from hackers. The next thing you need to set up is how customers will receive your products. On the shipping tab, you can configure your shipping rates. You can choose from Live Rates, Flat Rates, and Free Shipping. If you're not sure what these will be, you can accept the default and modify them later.

Verizon (VZ) Analysis
Verizon is the largest wireless service provider in the United States. The company’s 4G LTE network is available to more than 98% of the country’s population.
Wireless operations, which include voice and data services and equipment sales, generate approximately 73% of Verizon’s revenue and account for over 86% of the company’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, depreciation, and amortization).
Wireline operations account for about 27% of the company’s revenue but only generate 14% of Verizon’s EBITDA. This segment includes traditional voice offerings, as well as broadband video and internet services. The company has sold off many of its wireline assets in recent years to reduce its exposure to slower-growing, capital intensive areas of the sector.
Overall, Verizon maintains more than 115 million wireless retail connections, 5.8 million Fios internet subscribers, and 4.6 million Fios video subscribers.
Business Analysis
Verizon’s business is (slowly) expanding into newer areas such as digital media, telematics, and the Internet of Things, but the company’s historical key to success has been delivering reliable wireless and wireline services over the best communications network in the country.
Verizon routinely invests more than $16 billion annually to increase the capacity and reliability of its wireless network. Thanks to its massive investments in capital equipment and spectrum licenses, Verizon’s 4G LTE network covers more than 314 million people today.

Further helping its competitive positioning, Verizon maintains one of the 10 most valuable brandsin the world. Consumers and businesses trust Verizon’s network reliability and reputation for superior performance, and the company’s thousands of brick-and-mortar stores keep its brand highly visible.
As long as Verizon continues to invest in its leading network coverage and architecture, the company should continue maintaining a massive base of customers. Disrupting Verizon’s base of customers would be almost impossible barring a revolutionary change in network technologies.
For one thing, growth in the number of new wireless subscribers has slowed considerably with smartphone adoption now being widespread. With new customer growth hard to come by, the industry has consolidated to become more productive and expand coverage. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint generate almost all of the industry’s revenue today, for example.
Verizon’s large subscriber base (over 115 million retail connections) provides it with the cash flow needed to support and enhance its existing wireless network. Potential new entrants lack the subscriber base needed to fund a nationwide wireless network and acquire spectrum licenses, effectively keeping them locked out of the market.
Trying to win subscribers over from Verizon would be extremely costly and impractical for a newcomer. It’s a lot easier to maintain an existing large base of subscribers in a mature market than it is to build a new base from scratch.
While competition between the four major carriers is intense, Verizon’s scale and leading market position have enabled its wireless segment to deliver excellent EBITDA margins in excess of 40% while generating predictable earnings.
Simply put, new entrants lack the capital, spectrum, and subscriber base to effectively compete with any of the big four carriers in the U.S. In addition to the industry’s high barriers to entry, the wireless communications market is also appealing because its services are non-discretionary in nature.
For example, Verizon’s churn rate (i.e. the percentage of customers who leave) in its wireless business is only about 1%. The majority of the company’s revenue is also recurring because consumers and businesses have a continuous need to communicate and use data, even during recessions.
As mobile and broadband usage continues growing with increased consumption of data and video, Verizon’s wireless network will become increasingly valuable – or at least that is what the company is banking on as it gradually exits wireline businesses and doubled down on wireless in 2014.
Verizon sold off around a quarter of its wireline phone and internet operations for $10.5 billion in 2015, reducing its exposure to these slower-growing businesses that could face increased regulatory scrutiny.
This move is part of Verizon’s ongoing shift to concentrate its efforts on its wireless and technology businesses, which are more profitable, relatively less capital intensive, and possess better growth prospects.
Verizon doubled down on wireless with its $130 billion acquisition of Vodafone’s 45% interest in Verizon Wireless in February 2014. With full control over Verizon Wireless, the company continues to aggressively invest in its industry-leading network as it prepares for the continued surge in data consumption.
Verizon has historically enjoyed a two-year advantage on its competitors when moving to the next generation network architecture. With almost all of its wireless data traffic now riding on the 4G LTE network, Verizon has already begun work to get its network ready for 5G (fifth-generation) wireless technology, which is expected to deliver 30 to 50 times faster connection speeds than 4G.
The company began conducting 5G trials during 2016, but the first mobile phones with 5G capabilities are unlikely to debut until 2019. Instead, the $65 billion U.S. residential broadband market, currently dominated by cable operators Comcast and Charter Communications, is Verizon’s first target of opportunity in 2018.
Management believes 25% to 30% of this industry is addressable by 5G technology, potentially disrupting the oligopolistic home internet market while providing a meaningful growth avenue for the firm. Rather than rely on costly last-mile wires and pipes to deliver internet to consumers, Verizon’s technology essentially sends signals through its wireless network into a home, where those signals are then converted into Wi-Fi.
Verizon expects to commercialize its high-speed 5G internet offering in the second half of 2018, with a broader rollout targeted in 2019.

While 5G’s impact on mobile devices is a little further down the road, its significantly faster speeds and responsiveness could be game-changers for many parts of the technology industry, including self-driving cars, robotics, virtual reality, and smart cities. Accelerated growth in these areas, fueled by much faster connectivity, could cause data usage to explode even higher, further increasing the value of reliable wireless networks.
Of course, other mobile carriers are working on their own 5G networks as well. However, Verizon seems to have a clear lead. Sprint and T-Mobile are targeting a nationwide 5G network launch in late 2019 or 2020, according to The Wall Street Journal.
It will likely take years before the impact of 5G technology is fully known, so Verizon has been busy exploring growth opportunities outside of wireless and 5G technology, including new business models focused on video, the Internet of Things, and content. Rather than rely completely on its wireless operations, Verizon is positioning itself to benefit from the rise in mobile advertising and connected applications.
Most notably, the company spent more than $8.5 billion on two somewhat controversial acquisitions – AOL (acquired in 2015) and Yahoo (2017). These sites are two of the 10 most-popular web properties in the U.S., according to Bloomberg.
Through these deals, Verizon gained a mobile advertising platform and a host of online content, including The Huffington Post and TechCrunch. Verizon presumably has plenty of data surrounding its customers’ mobile behaviors, which could give it a chance of challenging Google and Facebook in the mobile advertising market.
The company also launched go90, a free mobile TV platform that delivers content for millennials. Go90 has been described as Hulu meets Twitter, and Verizon has reached content deals with the NFL, NBA, Vice Media, and major advertisers who want to reach this demographic.
In 2017, Verizon combined its media assets into a new segment, Oath, which accounts for around 6% of company-wide revenue. While it’s impact on overall results is relatively small today, the firm hopes to grow Oath’s revenue to between $10 billion and $20 billion in 2020, which would represent around 8% to 15% of Verizon’s total revenue today.
The ultimate success of Verizon’s media platforms is far from certain, but these initiatives could help lower wireless churn, further strengthen the Verizon brand, and generate meaningful advertising revenue if they continue to scale.
Internet of Things is another unique growth opportunity Verizon is focusing on. Telematics, smart energy, lighting, agricultural technology, and more are driving demand in this area.
Despite the excitement around these initiatives, they aren’t likely to be moving the needle for Verizon anytime soon. For example, Internet of Things revenue accounted for 0.7% of Verizon’s total sales during the fourth quarter of 2017. However, this area is consistently recording double-digit growth.
Significant revenue streams from these relatively new businesses is likely at least a few years out, and that’s if everything goes according to plan. Regardless, Verizon’s investments in these areas underscore the evolution that is occurring in the telecom industry.
Besides making selective investments in areas that offer potential for faster growth, Verizon is pulling levers to save money as it contends with an intensively competitive and saturated wireless market.
Specifically, the company announced plans in late 2017 to cut $10 billion in costs by 2022. These actions will free up more cash for the firm to continue investing in its wireless network and new growth opportunities while continuing to fund its dividend.
Management also expects the new tax bill to result in a $3.5 billion to $4 billion boost to cash flow from operations in 2018. The extra cash flow will primarily be used to reduce the company’s leverage, further strengthening its dividend safety.
Overall, Verizon seems likely to remain a key player serving the communications needs of millions of consumer and businesses for many years to come.
Key Risks
Arguably the biggest uncertainty facing Verizon is future growth in wireless. Subscriber growth has largely plateaued as U.S. smartphone penetration has more than tripled since 2010 to exceed 80% today.
The industry’s saturation has caused the big four carriers to fight each other more aggressively for existing subscribers rather than behave like a rational oligopoly. T-Mobile and Sprint have worked hard to improve their networks’ coverage and quality in recent years, too.
While they still score below Verizon’s network almost across the board in quality and coverage measures, the gap has narrowed, making it less painful for consumers to switch services. With 72% of U.S. counties having coverage from at least four wireless providers, according to data from Mosaik cited by The Wall Street Journal, consumers have more options than ever before.
Perhaps more importantly, T-Mobile’s growth strategy has been very aggressive in recent years. The company has shaken up the industry by bringing back unlimited data plans and dropping two-year contracts. As a result, Verizon has lost some of its ability to charge a premium for its network quality and even reported its first-ever quarterly net loss of wireless subscribers in early 2017.
Verizon has since stabilized and continued growing its subscriber base by bringing back its own unlimited data plans, but the industry’s era of lower phone bills appears to be the new normal. That’s especially true since talks of a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile have ended (more consolidation could have helped the industry become more rational).
The wireless market’s saturation is likely a strong driver behind Verizon’s pursuit of new growth businesses in the technology sector. However, as previously mentioned, these areas remain relatively small compared to the company’s wireless operations, and they are far from guaranteed successes, especially given Verizon’s lack of expertise with these business models.
For now, Verizon will live and die by its wireless business. If growth in the wireless market weakens, the battle between incumbents for existing subscribers could intensify and further pressure the industry’s margins.
There are also risks with Verizon’s 5G investments, which are still very much in the early days and far from being proven. As other competitors invest heavily in 5G and non-traditional rivals, such as Google and Facebook, explore creating their own mobile wireless networks and internet services, the telecom sector seems likely to continue evolving faster than it ever has before.
Closing Thoughts on Verizon
If one thing is clear, the telecom industry is undergoing a meaningful evolution. Content, media, and communications are converging like never before, and Verizon is one of many players working to reinforce its position in the market.
For now, Verizon appears to remain a reliable income stock, one that seems likely to continue its streak of paying uninterrupted dividends for more than 30 consecutive years. The company’s scale, hard-to-replicate network assets, mission-critical services, brand recognition, and massive subscriber base remain important competitive advantages.
As management works to cut costs, reduce debt, and continue investing in 5G and new businesses, such as media and advertising, Verizon should become even better positioned to deal with intensified competition in wireless markets.
Overall, Verizon seems likely to continue generating predictable results in the years ahead. However, investors need to keep a close eye on future developments in the wireless market, especially given the company’s capital intensity and large debt load, which reduce its flexibility if conditions were to meaningfully weaken or if management desired to make a major acquisition for growth.

15 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BUSINESS/ MARKETING/ENDORSEMENT ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 6

    This week, over 300 of the world’s best tennis players, including seven former tournament champions, descend on Indian Wells, CA to compete for more than $14 million in front of 400,000+ fans at tennis’ “Fifth Major.” Every top-10 player from the ATP World Tour and WTA is entered for the 2017 BNP Paribas Open. This includes 22-time Grand Slam Singles Champion Serena Williams, seeking to become the first WTA player to win three singles titles at Indian Wells. She joins 17-time Grand Slam Singles Champion and four time BNP Paribas Open singles winner Roger Federer. The tournament also showcases ongoing Indian Wells Tennis Garden renovations, designed to enhance the experience for players and fans alike. Upgrades include top restaurants like Spago; a new year-round hospitality space holding up to 200; satellite broadcast studio; fitness center; and club pro shop. Owner Larry Ellison and staff have truly created a desert tennis oasis, ensuring the game’s top players (and their thousands of adoring fans) return to the Coachella Valley year after year and creating an enviable benchmark for every other tournament worldwide.
  Coming off their first World Series title in over 100 years, the Chicago Cubs are now submitting a bid to host the 2020 MLB All-Star Game. According to the Chicago Tribune, Cubs Chair Tom Ricketts is working with city officials to put together an “attractive bid” to bring the event to Wrigley Field. Logistics are still being worked out, for the entire weekend spans “essentially five days of festivals and events.” Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney said that the team has “been in contact” with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office and MLB “regarding efforts to fulfill requirements to host the game.” The last time Wrigley played host to the All-Star Game was 1990, so the team hopes that its recent on-field success and ballpark renovations will lure the game back to the Windy City. Baseball’s major “event leverage” comes with the All-Star Game annually.  They award new ballparks, renovations, civic accomplishments, and (in the Cubs’ case) the end of monumental frustration. The game goes to South Florida this year amid rumors of an impending Marlins sale.
  The NFL’s first outdoor draft is being hyped up weeks ahead of the selection show. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia is “expecting 200,000 football fans” to show up to the outdoor theatre being constructed in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The theatre will only seat around 3,000 people, and tickets are limited, yet the event should bring hundreds of thousands to the city center. To keep fans engaged, standing room on the Parkway will be “transformed into a festival the size of 25 football fields, open free to the public before and during the draft.” Staging the three-day event is said to cost around $20-25 million, though most of that will be covered by the NFL. The Draft joins the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl as the NFL’s “rotating mega-events.” Each year it is expected to outdraw, outhustle, and outperform the predecessor – leading to more leverage, better public support, and more choices for NFL public/private partnerships.
    MLS is off and running as it opens its 2017 season bookended by two new expansion franchises. Newcomer Atlanta United has sold more than 30,000 season tickets, appealing to millennials and Hispanic fans alike. Atlanta United will host eight games at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium before moving into Mercedes-Benz Stadium on July 30. In Minneapolis, Minnesota United is "confident the club’s first home match" as a MLS franchise will "exceed 30,000 tickets sold," according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. United has "sold out the lower bowl" at TCF Bank Stadium for the March 12 match against Atlanta United, and is "closing in on 11,000 season tickets sold, with a team-imposed limit of 11,842 (tied to state’s lake total)." Elsewhere in the league, Orlando City SC moved in to its new home as it hosted NYCFC for its 2017 MLS season opener. The game at Orlando City Stadium was "sold out for weeks" and was broadcast nationally on ESPN. In front of MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Real Salt Lake drew 19,519 fans for its match against Toronto FC. And a would-be expansion franchise in San Diego announced Landon Donovan as a new member of its ownership group. San Diego could well be a test case – is soccer chipping away at the NFL’s American sports dominance?
  Fortress Investment Group is not giving up on its goal to keep the Raiders in Oakland. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the investment group sent “the NFL and the Raiders a proposal to build a new stadium for the team next to their existing venue.” The team is currently committed to relocating to Las Vegas, but league owners still need to meet and vote on the potential move “as soon as the end of March.” “It is unclear how different the proposal Fortress sent in is from the model it agreed to with Oakland in December, which the NFL has rejected.” Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL declined to comment on the proposal or the previously rejected bid, but those close to the matter note that under the last proposal, “Fortress would have developed the land and kept key revenue streams.” To many, this proposal is viewed as the last effort to keep the Raiders in the Bay Area. The Las Vegas deal has a much stronger financial foundation – public support and NFL/Raiders equity. What Oakland has is a tradition of fan support and the presumption that the process be given “one last best chance” to work.
  With the 2024 Olympic bid down to only two cities, LA 2024 is ramping up its promotion efforts overseas after signing PR firm Weber Shandwick. According to Ad Age, the PR firm is tasked with providing the bid group with communications support in international markets “where Olympic stakeholders live and work, as well as providing strategic insight into the entire process.” Weber Shandwick “helped support winning Olympic bids for the 2022 Beijing Games, the 2020 Tokyo Games and the 2014 Sochi Games.” Unlike past projects, this firm will not have to roll out a domestic campaign in Los Angeles to win over public support because 88% of the city already supports the bid. This move to hire an international PR agency marks another significant step for LA 2024 to land the Olympics after Budapest recently withdrew its bid; Paris is the only other competing city. While we all know that the Olympic selection process is inherently political, the PR message will focus on legacy, infrastructure support, and an “expectation” that the U.S. should participate in a Summer Games sooner than later. Look for drama in the boardroom between now and the end of the summer.
  UCLA guard Lonzo Ball’s father made a bold prediction: his son will be the first player drafted with his own brand. According to ESPN, Lonzo’s father, LaVar Ball, said in a radio interview that if the UCLA star “doesn’t sign with adidas, Nike or Under Armour, whoever…I’ll sign the Big Baller Brand.” The “Triple B” brand is already an active apparel company that was started by the Ball family; it is the brand that Lonzo could be touting upon Draft Day later this year. While this move is still up in the air, LaVar boldly stated his view on the situation, “I’m not looking for no endorsement deal. I’m looking for a marketing and distribution deal.” LaVar has received a great deal of criticism this past season for making outlandish and egotistical comments on behalf of his son, such as Lonzo is “better than Steph Curry” and that “Lonzo would only play for the Lakers.” It is that time of year for hype – family, or otherwise. The astronomical NBA salary cap increase this next year will give this year’s rookie class a significant bounty.
  What is already the wealthiest soccer league in the world, the EPL is still finding new ways to bring in millions of dollars annually. According to the London Daily Mail, Premier League clubs are now “set to earn up to $12.4 million more from sponsorships after talks” to add sleeve sponsorships for next season opened up between league and team executives. Sleeve sponsorships are valued at around one-fifth of a main kit sponsor, which means that clubs such as Manchester United, which receives “$58.3 million-a-year from Chevrolet to be on its shirts, could see a further $11 million invested in the club” on a yearly basis. Contract stipulations with main kit sponsors for a couple of the EPL’s best teams mean that a few notable clubs “will not be able to participate in the deal for next season,” though they will be able to sign a secondary sponsor in following years. Purists beware – the EPL is looking more like NASCAR every day. Why wouldn’t it? Especially if an unused square inch of clothing should now command over $12 million annually for each club.
  As online streaming becomes an increasingly popular way to watch TV, Google has entered the race to win over sports fans. According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube, whose parent company is Google, is now offering a web-TV service that packages over 40 broadcast and cable channels for $35 a month. YouTube TV will “have all the major broadcasters, including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, as well as several dozen well-known cable channels, such as ESPN, FX, USA, MSNBC and Fox News.” YouTube TV is set to offer an expansive list of sports channels as well: Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, NBC Sports, Comcast SportsNet, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News, Big Ten Network, SEC Network, and Golf Channel will all be available for subscribers. A start date has not yet been announced, but YouTube did confirm that it will “roll out the service first in markets where it had secured rights from local affiliates.” The next round of sports rights bids should be one for the ages:  the traditionalists (networks) vs. the “newcomers” (YouTube, Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.). Impact:  more money for teams, leagues, and players.
With the goal of turning their arena into a “12-month destination,” the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks have unveiled the newly-renovated east side of the United Center. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, renovations include a new office building, fan atrium, restaurants, and a team store. They also provide an “indoor, climate-controlled space for fans to visit the Michael Jordan statue, and to use the ticket windows.” The new atrium is 190,000 square feet and will be open every day from 10:00am-6:00pm, year round. The Bulls and Blackhawks never have much trouble filling seats at the United Center for home games, but this marks a great step for the premier Chicago sports franchises to engage with their fans outside of just game days. Adding the store and restaurants should create a significant amount of buzz around the United Center, as well as a nice bit of extra revenue for the teams. Facility renovations all over the country enter new phases:  lease renegotiations; financial creativity; high-tech tweaks; and new space for merchandise and concessions. Obviously, better for the fans.
  Professional golf may soon experience one of the “biggest shake-ups” in recent history with rule changes looming. According to the BBC, the R&A and USGA are in talks to “make golf quicker and played under more simple, consistent and fair rules.” The new rulebook will be drawn up in “a modern, plain style” that will be written from a “player's perspective.” Some of the most significant changes being considered include removing a penalty for accidentally moving your ball, reducing ball search time from five to three minutes, and relaxing the protocols for “taking free or penalty drops, with the ball dropped from only an inch above the ground, rather than shoulder height.” This comes as the first “substantial review” of the rules in professional golf since 1984. The two governing bodies want to see a simpler game with less contention over some of the nuances affiliated with the game today. Even the most traditional and historical of games undergoes substantial tinkering from time to time. First, baseball’s quest to shorten its game. Is golf close behind?
  Following a poor year of ratings, the NFL is looking to win over a few more fans this coming season. According to SportsBusiness Journal, one key way the NFL is trying to garner more public support is by possibly relaxing its laughable touchdown celebration rules. The Competition Committee is in talks to let players “have fun again” after scoring touchdowns – an area they have cracked down on in recent years following the likes of Chad Ocho Cinco and Terrell Owens. The league’s reputation and ratings plummeted this past season following a series of events. “You think of concussions, you think of serious injuries, you think of domestic violence, you think of people protesting the flag and other things,” noted EPSN’s Israel Gutierrez. “Maybe if you introduce some fun into this and not maintain yourselves as the ‘No Fun League,’ then maybe there are different ways to get your product a little more desirable.” While the NFL aspires to $25 billion per year in revenue, there is always the need to generate new fan support – diverse demographics, superstar promotion, and fan enthusiasm.
On the heels of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, an economic impact study from the league’s International Series game in Mexico City revealed an “incremental increase” in the city’s GDP. According to the Sports Industry group at EY, the Mexico City game this past season between the Texans and Raiders supported “2,840 jobs in the city” and contributed toward $43 million of total domestic and international tourist spending; the overall economic impact was $45 million. The sellout crowd at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium consisted mainly of domestic fans, though over 9,500 international fans attended and 21,500 fans traveled from other parts of Mexico to get in on the action. These numbers come as great news for the NFL, which has tried to expand its international footprint in all directions. The league currently has more games planned in Mexico and throughout Europe in the coming years. Most recent news about Mexico has not been good. However, the combination of the WGC Golf Championship and the long-term interest for the NFL in Mexico is welcome news for our southern neighbor.
  With March Madness right around the corner, Pizza Hut is “stepping up its game with high-top sneakers that allow their wearers to order pizza with a push of a button…” According to Ad Age, Pizza Hut is handing out 64 pairs of their “Pie Tops” to honor the 64 teams that annually compete in March Madness. The shoes are Bluetooth-enabled, making ordering pizza as easy as can be. To promote the release of the shoes, Pizza Hut also released a promotional commercial featuring Grant Hill playing basketball in the shoes before sitting down, pressing the button on the tongue of the shoes, and having a two-topping pizza delivered moments after. Pizza Hut Vice President/Media & Advertising David Daniels said, “We're planning to feature the pie tops with on-air talent.” However, Pizza Hut has not announced yet which people will “wear and interact with the shoes during the broadcasts.” Never too early for basketball promotion, especially with ongoing streaming, constant hype and promotion, and the inevitable appeal to young demographics.
  The Las Vegas Golden Knights are officially an NHL team. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Owner Bill Foley made the third and final $500 million expansion payment on behalf of the franchise. “This is the most extensive transaction I've ever done, and I've made $5 billion deals. Even my wife had to sign 20 documents,” noted Foley. Other NHL team owners and Commissioner Gary Bettman were quick to congratulate Foley on officially joining the league. The Knights are the most recent expansion team in the NHL, bringing the total team count up to 31 for next season. The teams’ final expansion payment was not supposed to be completed and processed until April 5, but the league expedited and finalized the transaction five weeks ahead of time. Team General Manager George McPhee was thankful for the quick response on behalf of the league, meaning that the Golden Knights can now participate in transactions before the trade deadline. Las Vegas went from being “radioactive” as a franchise location to the home of one (and maybe two) in the not-too-distant future. Fan orientation, significant public money, and tourism infrastructure all add to the possibilities for success.
