Today In History
Shirley Chisholm became the first Barbadian African American congresswoman in 1968. Chisholm represented New York’s 12th congressional district, a district centered on Bedford–Stuyvesant, for seven terms from 1969 to 1983.
In 1972, she became the first major-party Barbadian African American candidate to make a bid for the U.S. presidency, and announced her historic campaign for President at Brooklyn’s Concord Baptist Church on this date January 25, 1972.
“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” - Shirley Chisholm
“Make you co-op-er-ate with the rhythm, that is what I give em, Reagan is the Prez but I voted for Shirley Chisholm.” - Biz Markie

I think we (Queer Christians) should bring back the Feast of Fools! Here's my pitch:
Medieval Christians celebrated the days following Christmas with societal inversion. If God became a vulnerable child born into poverty, then the best celebration should invert the social order: master and servant, clergy and laity, man and woman. The Feast of Fools–held on January 1st–was the most notable celebration of cosmic inversion. Developed in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, the tradition of the feasts continued until the 16th century. (1)
The festival is popularly misunderstood as a celebration of sacrilege, a result of its apparent burlesque of religion. Yet, the festival’s role reversals were prescribed by clergy, and the "fools" represented those chosen by God for their lowly status. From surviving 13th century manuscripts–notably, the Play of Daniel from Beauvais Cathedral and the Office of Joseph from Laon Cathedral–it is clear that some Catholic Churches in France sanctioned cross-dressing for liturgical purposes. (2) In fact, the Feast of Fools is remarkable for being sanctified rather than sacrilegious.
Many anthropologists of religion have argued that “sacred play,” or “ludic ritual,” is central to how religious behaviors function. (3) Although play may seem counterintuitive to religion, absurdity and holiness often go together, especially considering the role reversals and revelry of the Feast of Fools.
Literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin made a similar argument about the “carnivalesque.” (4) When absurdity is celebrated in religion–when a society’s usual rules are suspended–observant revelers can stretch the boundaries of their identities or reverse their social roles. Men become women; laity become clergy; God becomes a helpless infant; death becomes life. It is on the strength of the absurd that religions delve into hope and new ways of becoming. (5) “Sacred play” is reality altering work, a cornerstone of religious enlightenment and religious embodiment.
In 1969, theologian Harvey Cox proposed that an imitation of the medieval Feast of Fools could rejuvenate modern Christian spirituality, lamenting that the tradition has forgotten sacred play. (6)
As found in the Medieval Feast of Fools, the joy of inversion and freedom of death were, at one point, celebrated in Christian tradition through cross-dressing. Drag exists in Christian tradition as an artform that is capable of embodying the Divine. Sharing in Christ’s martyrdom is only part of Christian embodiment, and redemption and resurrection are essential to any imitation of Christ. Through embodying Christ, religious drag can become a project of resurrection.

Welcome to the Shadow of the Eclipse
October 4-31, 2023
Some introductory notes
The “shadow of the eclipse” is a time period lasting from 10 days before the first eclipse, to three days after the final eclipse. It is recommended not to start anything new, or schedule anything important, during these days - as usual I refer everyone to the 1981 wedding of Lady Diana Spencer to the Prince of Wales, as an example.
Of course we live in a place/time which scoffs at letting astrology help with the timing of events - therefore don’t lose hope if something falls unavoidably within the eclipse shadow. Just be prepared.
I wanted to take a more thorough approach to delineation, this time. I hope it’s helpful.
South Node Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse happens when the New Moon lies close (in the Zodiac) to either the North Lunar Node, or to the South one. It occurred to me to do a little research on whether which Node is involved, makes any difference - and yes, it does.
Astrologers call the South Node “the dragon’s tail” - Steven Forrest calls the South Node, “the dragon’s butt” - because here we are “pooping out” what we don’t need and can’t use. (One person’s poop, however, is another person’s fertilizer.)
Eclipses conjunct the South Lunar Node, like the October 14 one, have an outflowing (outpooping?) of energy. They tend to feature external events which we have to “rise up to.”
If you’d like to note how these have affected you in the past (always a good idea to check “what happened last time”), here is a list of the previous South Node solar eclipses in this century:
December 14, 2001, 22°56’ Sagittarius
December 4, 2002, 11°58’ Sagittarius
November 23, 2003, 1°14’ Sagittarius
October 14, 2004, 21°06’ Libra
October 3, 2005, 10°19’ Libra
September 22, 2006, 29°20’ Virgo
September 11, 2007, 18°25’ Virgo
August 1, 2008, 9°32’ Leo
July 22, 2009, 29°27’ Cancer
July 11, 2010, 19°24’ Cancer
June 1, 2011, 11°02’ Gemini
July 1, 2011, 9°12’ Cancer
May 20, 2012, 0°21’ Gemini
May 10, 2013, 19°31’ Taurus
April 29, 2014, 8°52’ Taurus
March 20, 2015, 29°27’ Pisces
March 9, 2016, 18°56’ Pisces
February 26, 2017, 8°12’ Pisces
February 15, 2018, 27°08’ Aquarius
January 6, 2019, 15°25’ Capricorn
December 26, 2019, 4°07’ Capricorn
December 14, 2020, 23°08’ Sagittarius
December 4, 2021, 12°22’ Sagittarius
October 25, 2022, 2°00’ Scorpio
October 14, 2023, 21°08’ Libra
Going down that list was a very uncomfortable trip down memory lane for me. When those South Node eclipses affected me, it was generally a harbinger of some difficult “external event” which I had little to no control over - which is not the same thing as saying “it wasn’t my fault.” I brought some of it on myself due to bad decisions. Some karma chickens coming home to roost, in other words. Not all of them were dire, though. One in particular gave me something of a respite from what had been happening in my life - it was conjunct my natal 12th House cusp.
Saros Series “7 South”
This eclipse is part of Saros Series “7 South.” Bernadette Brady writes,
The individual experiencing this series will find that huge obstacles will suddenly and easily clear or, on the negative side, a pending potential crisis will suddenly manifest and move through his or her life very rapidly. Either way the individual will feel that everything is moving at great speed. (The Eagle and the Lark)
Previous Saros “7 South” eclipses in Ms M’s lifetime:
September 11, 1969, 18°53’ Virgo
September 23, 1987, 29°34’ Virgo
October 3, 2005, 10°19’ Libra
Not quite as depressing for me personally.
Whatever Shall We Do?
1) Determine which of your natal houses this eclipse falls in.
2) Determine whether the eclipse makes an aspect to anything in your chart. Use a 1° orb. In my case, the conjunctions, squares, sesquiquads (135°), inconjuncts, and oppositions made the most obvious impacts.
3) If there is a close aspect to a planet, check to see which house(s) that planet rules. One South Node eclipse was conjunct the ruler of my natal 4th House, and I moved three months later.
4) Avoid strenuously negative thoughts. If you put a lot of energy into anticipating that something is going to be horrible and painful and disastrous, well, guess what - that’s exactly what’s going to happen. If you catch yourself falling into a panic, try to refocus the energy into “the best possible outcome.”

Today's Dog: The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, perhaps better known as the Great Pyrenees (nicknamed Patou as well). The PMD was raised as a livestock guardian, and gained popularity among the nobility of France. They played a pivotal role in the genealogy of the Leonberger, another large herder. Like many European breeds, the Patou was on the verge of extinction in the post-War period, which was only accelerated by the disappearance of wolves, their primary game. However, they have gained popularity particularly in the United States!
Today's Monkee: My Share of the Sidewalk! This is from Missing Links Vol 1 (1988) and was recorded on January 9th, 1969. It was written by Mike and produced by the group. Davy sings lead, and Mike plays piano and guitar!

Today In History Shirley Chisholm became the first Barbadian African American congresswoman in 1968. Chisholm represented New York's 12th congressional district, a district centered on Bedford–Stuyvesant, for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first major-party Barbadian African American candidate to make a bid for the U.S. presidency, and announced her historic campaign for President at Brooklyn’s Concord Baptist Church on this date January 25, 1972. “You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” - Shirley Chisholm “Make you co-op-er-ate with the rhythm, that is what I give em Reagan is the Prez but I voted for Shirley Chisholm.” - Biz Markie CARTER™️ Magazine carter-mag.com #wherehistoryandhiphopmeet #cartermagazine #historyandhiphop365 #carter #shirleychisholm #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #history #staywoke #brooklyn #bedstuy https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn1jjN8uRLH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My House of Wax Timeline with my oc Eden Sinclair:
A/N: None of this is canon in the actual House of Wax universe. This is for my Eden Sinclair AU. Things will probably be added in the future.
Eden Sinclair Info
Tumblr media
Spring of 1967: After two years of knowing each other, Doctor Victor Sinclair marries Sculptor, Trudy Herbert.
February 1968: Victor gets medical license revoked.
March 1968: Trudy and Victor find land in a small town and decide to build a house. Trudy also begins development on her House of Wax.
December 1968: House is finished, Doctor Sinclair continues his practices illegally, he becomes the town’s doctor.
May 15th 1969: After many setbacks Trudy’s House of Wax is finished.
Early August 1969: Trudy finds out she’s pregnant.
Late August 1969: Trudy finds out it’s twins.
March 29th 1970: In the early hours of Easter morning, Beauregard and Vincent Sinclair are born. Victor Sinclair performs a C-section on Trudy then immediately goes into surgery to separate the twins.
Early March 1974: Trudy is working on Vincent’s first mask, she hates the way he looks but his lack of temper makes up for it.
May 1974: Trudy finds out she’s pregnant again. They’re twins, this time fraternal.
June 1974: Trudy shows Vincent how to sculpt with wax. (This point forward Vincent and Bo are forced to grow up a little faster than normal because of Trudy’s fear of failing the completion of the wax museum especially with two more on the way.)
January 12th 1975: Lester and Eden Sinclair are born.
1978: Lester and Eden are now neglected. Bo attempts to take care of them only to get punished when he gets caught with them.
1980: Eden volunteers to try on dresses and makeup for Trudy since the other boys won’t.
April 1987: Victor catches Eden trying on makeup alone and dresses too. He’s read about this. He talks to Eden.
May 1987: Eden gets put on HRT. Victor does monthly exams on her.
June 1988: Vincent and Bo graduate, Vincent is convinced to stay to help Trudy. Bo stays to take care of Lester and Eden. He works at the gas station.
August 1988: Class of 88 begin to leave except for the twins. Some parents follow the kids.
May 1990: Eden slowly gets taken off HRT. More people leave.
December 1990: After years of abuse and neglect Vincent, Bo, and Eden come up with a plan to kill their parents and make it look like a double suicide. They don’t tell Lester, they know he doesn’t want anything to do with it.
February 14th 1991: Victor and Trudy come back from their date. Victor goes upstairs and Trudy goes to the kitchen. Vincent and Eden hang Trudy and Bo shoots Victor.
March 29th 1991: They tell Lester what happened. Guilt sets in but it stops soon after Bo brings up Trudy’s Town of Wax.
1992: More people have left Ambrose after Trudy and Victor’s suicide.
June 1993: Eden and Lester graduate, the last of Ambrose’s young residents leave. Bo brings up killing people to get a more authentic look to the wax figures, Eden and Vincent agree to it.
August 1993: The old library is handed down to Eden, she turns it into a local museum too.
April 1995: The sugar mill shuts down, only people 50 and older live in Ambrose now minus the Sinclair Family. Lester moves 10 minutes out of town and begins his road kill job.
1996: Everyone in Ambrose is dead. At this point Bo figures out a way to control the town from the house. Lester helps him with it.
