In My Room: Teenagers in their Bedrooms is a photobook by Adrienne Salinger from 1995. What I liked about this series of photographs is the way that you can feel a sense of identity, personality, just like this point of difference between each person photographed. This is something that I would like to portray in my own photo book. I also liked the way that it’s staged because they are posed and looking directly into the camera but their environment has been untouched which makes it feel more authentic to the true self of each teenager. Salinger took a lot of mid shot photographs but she did switch between portrait and landscape images which is something I could consider for my own work as it can be a bit repetitive when taking the same kinds of photos.

                                                                              Para el ex-Niel.

Naturalmente iniciaría esto con algo sínico como mi repugnancia hacia tu persona por todas aquellas burlas disfrazadas con el pretexto de amistad. Enumeraría una y diez cosas mas que no me gustan de ti y te haría saber cuanto te desprecio por hacerme perder mis preciadas horas de sueño cuando bien podría dormir en una noche lluviosa para estar perfectamente despierto mañana durante el horario. Pero no, me hiciste todo un drama con bailarines y gritos de orquesta sobre las consecuencias de (en caso dado) no darte nada de presente. 

Y no te miento, no pensaba hacer nada como resultado de una sutil señal de venganza, inmaduro, tal vez si; creía que era aun día once, mas caí en cuenta justo cuando estaba por cerrar mis ojos. Y te odio por eso, no te creas demasiado, no pensaba en ti antes de dormir, mas bien en las circunstancias que interferirían al dar un paso en falso. Y entonces sucedió, me arme de valor con ayuda de la música de el nuevo albúm HI5 (¿promoción, donde?), tome un poco de mi bebida energizante y desempolve el ya tan abandonado phs. Posteriormente comencé a escribir lo primero que llego a mi mente. Una vez mas, mis palabras tienen menos sentido que un ebrio formando frases . Pero prefiero que sea así, de otra forma me pondría nostálgico y haría un reencuentro de todo lo que ha sucedido con nosotros durante este año. Porque si, tres sesenta y cinco días han pasado, se dice poco al verlos justo ahora fluir como agua, pero es un periodo prolongado para alguien que esta acostumbrado al constante cambio. Ambos lo estamos, por ello te he bautizado como el pez beta. Solitario e igual de irritable hacia otros.

Rebusqué entre mi baúl de recuerdos, a pesar de intentar evitarlo(aquellas muchas copias de seguridad que realice en nuestro tiempo), pero por mas que escarbe entre escritos no logre dar con lo que buscaba. Así que solo obtuve esto de las muchas veces que quisiste rendirte. No recuerdo de donde salio o porque te lo mencione, solo se que era cuando querías arrojar las esperanzas al suelo y enterrarlas(una de tantas veces, ¿cuantas mas nos esperan?). Sin importar cantidades o rendición de cuentas, siempre estaré ahí, para brindar apoyo o palabras de animo de sosiego. O para darte una bofetada, cuando estés mal, para hacer entrar en razon a un terco como tu.

Nunca seré el mejor amigo, el mejor conocido o la mejor persona, me imagino que debido a ello has querido dar el ticker de cambio(olvídalo, quizás en otra vida). No te dejare, no por el momento porque así lo he decidido, porque así lo quieres, porque ambos optamos por conservar esta extraña amistad que caracteriza a dos torpes mentes.

Y bueno, no hay mucho que decir, esta es mi forma de dar como evidente mis mas sinceros sentí... puta mierda que la noche me esta afectando. ¡Dani, hazme reaccionar! ¡No puedo llegar a la linea divisora de lo cursi y lo aceptable!

Y no, ya no hay mas vídeos por ahora si te lo preguntas, axiomaticamente te he mal acostumbrado con aquel obsequio, aunque, bueno, esta vez no te he hecho esperar demasiado como aquella vez, ¿cuantos meses fueron? aun y cuando mi reloj de arena va a mas de 350 km/h. También recordé parte del Flashchallege y de tu reacción(una de las tantos recuerdos extraviados). 

¿Que cosa olvido? Cierto...

Llegamos al top diez de las cosas mas perturbadoras del mundo y en el numero uno tenemos a... "Terraria 1.2" ¿Alguna vez has jugado? Bueno, no es un juego del otro mundo, algo con gráficos bastante antiguos pero con buena historia, entre sus "particiones” existe algo llamado "Bunnyfish", ¿curioso, no? Porque recién lo he descubierto, un juego inspirado en nosotros. Aunque, bueno, es bastante traumantizante si me lo peguntas; asumiendo que los peces no son del todo agradables a la vista. Una imagen acá por si la duda te invade.

Y bueno amigos, esto es todo por hoy, el recorrido al pasado concluyo. Peces y mujeres primero, no olvide tomar su recuerdo. Pasan de las cuatro y si no despierto para las cinco... Vendré a vengarme de ti.

Se te aprecia, Dani. Aun y cuando olvidas apoyar el reciente comeback, siempre estar quejándote de todos(mi) y humectarte como buena planta. Dame un mes mas y veremos si esto prospera o te corto de raíz.

Everyone of us have a special memory, a special date and place, we would want to go back to, we may have lost a special person for some reason...but they are always in our memories and we would do anything to go back in time , to be with them again...

Today i feel just like the first day i found out i loved you ... today i feel that cold and shaking without you except i cant rush to tell you ...this time...i remembered your ft band and the role they played , and what a coincidence , new song is out... and i couldnt describe it any better...

Adrienne Salinger

“In My Room: Teenagers in Their Bedrooms” 1990-1996

Adrienne Salinger was born in 1956 in Berkeley, California. She earned a B.A. at the University of Oregon and an M.F.A. from the Chicago Art Institute. Salinger currently teaches photography at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, USA.

Adrienne Salinger captures a series of teenagers in their bedrooms, which all differ widely from each other and gives an insight of American teens during the 1990′s. Salinger originally began this project during the 1990′s 80′s shooting teenagers from Los Angeles to Seattle. She scrapped the project as she didn't conduct interviews with her chosen subjects which was an important element. After receiving a grant she decided to restart the whole project and carry out a two hour interview with each person she photographed.She used a Toyo 45CF – Cheapo 4×5 camera. Salinger would meet her subjects at restaurants, malls or via friends. Salinger would instruct them that they must not clean their rooms in preparation for her visit and their parents were not to be involved. Salinger stated on why she chose to photograph teens:

  “I chose teenagers because they’re on the edge of rapid change. It’s almost the last moment they’ll be living with their parents, in rooms that contain all of their possessions. The past is squeezed together on the same shelf as the future,”  

I really like this series of photograph as everyone’s room is so unique and as Salinger said: “Our bedrooms tell stories about us. They become the repository for memories, desire and self-image” We consider our bedrooms to be a safe space and a place were we realistically spent most of our time. You can easily depict the teens interests just by looking at their decor, posters and how clean their rooms are. 

Her 1990 photos inspired designer, Christopher Shannon’s SS/15 menswear collection, as well as Hollywood  set decorators.
