Lighting in the Dark research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For lighting in the dark, I originally have the plan of going to a park and photographing a bench under a street light, but having someone sit on the bench for a spooky vibe. However, there are no fairly local parks in my area that are close by I could shoot, I also didn’t feel comfortable walking around at night. I also don’t have anything interesting near me I could photograph and I don’t have someone I could do with. So I moved my focus to photographing indoors.
I couldn’t find many great examples of still life lighting in the dark, but here are a few I’ve found.

I personally wanted to go for a spooky and mysterious mood to my photo so I decided to photography at my alter.

I also had to keep the exposure and iso in mind while shooting and planning

These are my final two images for Landscape Interrupted, I think my favourite one is the first one as the fence acts as a leading line to the washing pole and I like how the washing line creates segments of the image and allows your eye to follow it to a different part of the image. The second is a view from my house which used to be an empty space after a school was knocked down. I do like how some trees and bushes are peppered around the place breaking up the dull beiges and cream colours.

Landscape Interrupted Reflective Memo
This brief threw me for a loop. I was worried about what I would be able to produce as I can’t drive and I don't know anyone who was able to drive me to remote locations. I will admit I put this brief off as I was really unsure about this. I didn't know want to shoot as there isn't many fields in my area, I looked at my class mates photographs and felt dread as they had produced lovely photographs of the windmills or other man made objects in a field with a stunning sunset behind them. This made me put shooting off even more. I had arranged to go somewhere with someone who can drive, but unfortunately they had to cancel on me. After trying to seek help from class mates (I was ignored) someone who ACTUALLY replied telling me that they had photographed a chair and table in their back garden which I thought was a really good idea as it broke up the greenery. I did the same as my back garden has a lot of green. I was happy with my photograph of the washing pole and line against a large hedge. My second photograph was right under my nose the ENTIRE time, I photographed houses with a field in the far distance. I was pretty happy when i realised that it broke up the greenery. The houses were originally build on a massive empty space as a school used to be there which was ultimately knocked down. Overall I am just glad I managed to produce something that was satisfactory and I am thankful for the one friend who helped me out.

Here are various ways to advertise my photograph, I really like how the coffee cup turned out as I think its a statement too as disposable, one use cups are a problem. I added a grainy filter over it to make it look like it was printed on paper. The billboards are hit and miss, the stock one doesn't look too good but the shopping centre one does which makes me happy.

This was my original idea vs my final idea. As I mentioned in my reflective log I do prefer the second image as it looks way better and conveys the message better. Although the first one was a good idea it isn't as effective.

Brand Slogan Reflective Log
I was 50/50 about brand slogan. I liked the idea of a still life brief as I really enjoyed the past couple I created and I like the free reign and creativity that comes with still life. However I didn't really like the rubbish idea as I felt there was so much that could be created with rubbish. I was proven wrong when I looked at my class mates creations. Personally I had a bit of a negative mindset set as I had to keep the slogan in mind and ensure I portrayed the message effectively. I had an idea of originally putting the recycled flower in with real flowers in the garden. After some feed back I did realise it wasn't a strong image. I then tried cutting a bottle in half to create a plant pot and placed soil in it and then plated the paper flower. I think the use of the plastic bottle was effective as a plant pot as plastic is a really big problem. I originally had the object on the window still itself but it looked awkward and lonely so I added some succulent plants along with it. I think it was a good idea as it looked really good and I was happy with my final image. Comparing my first and last image I can see a clear comparison and the message was clearer in the second photograph. In conclusion, this brief did throw me for a loop but i do like the final outcome and am glad I pushed myself to improve it.

360 Reflective Log.
At first hearing the 360 environments brief I was intrigued but then grew sceptical. I was worried about the environment I would photograph. I don’t drive, and I don’t know anyone who would be able to drive me to locations. I was worried about getting public transport with my camera equipment and I also would have to consider the bus time tables. I also didn’t want to travel during a pandemic. I had various ideas in my head, that being my garden, my bedroom, and a local cemetery. Upon narrowing down each idea I decided I would bite the bullet and go down to my local cemetery and take photos. The garden idea was ruled out instantly as my garden is not interesting and the flowers had not bloomed yet. The bedroom idea was also ruled out as I spoke to many people and they were doing that idea. Not that there is anything wrong with the idea, but I felt like to many people where doing the idea and I fell you can only do so much. For going down to the cemetery, I considered the time of day and the area I would shoot at, I decided to choose the only nice day in the week and headed over around 4:30 pm as the sun was setting during this time I had taken as many pictures as I needed. However, I had forgotten to set the format to jpeg and I had shot in RAW, making the editing process very tedious frustrating and very time consuming. Every time I would load photoshop and select collage it would instantly shut down and fail. So, after many attempts and realising that I had shot in RAW, I had to go through all my chosen photos, edit them and them save them all as jpegs. After this was all completed, my collage was Finally completed without Photoshop crashing. I had finally gotten my final image. Overall I am 50/50 about this project, I liked the idea and concept but the editing stage I didn’t enjoy, I mean id maybe enjoy it more if I had originally shot in jpeg than RAW.

FIND a photograph. Not yours.
STUDY the photograph. What do you know about the  elements of the photograph?
Does it have people in it? Who are those people?
This photograph has no people in it, it is a still life.
Is it a familiar place? What happened there?
This is not a familiar place to me, I am not sure on what  has happened there.
Does it signify and event? Describe the event.
I personally feel there is no event happening and there isn’t  any key factors to signify an event
How do you FEEL about the photograph?
I personally like the photograph, I like the simplicity, I  had originally chosen the photograph as I like the subject matter. I feel  like the placement could’ve had more thought into it, however.
If you know nothing about the photograph, write down  imagined stories; possibilities within the frame.
I have two stories in mind for  this photograph, it looks like one of the pre chosen still life photos that  is given to you in art to copy from, as it is really simple and looks fairly easy  to copy in acrylic paint. My second story is someone has recently gotten into  photography and this is their first photo they had taken and their first time  composing a still life, giving the reason it looks so rushed.
Ask others about the photograph.
I had shown my mother they photograph she asked if I had  taken it, I responded no, she replied with: “It looks really basic and thrown  together, overall not  a good  photograph”.

Inspiration for “Something Told”

I looked at Tavourmina’s work last year, so I’d like to revisit it this year for “Something Told” as she follows the traditional still life route. I adore her work as it is so detailed and intricately placed, as well had having some deeper meaning to each photograph. She is a photographer which is inspiring my “Something Told” ideas and concepts.

Paulette Tavormina
I absolutely love these photographs. I was struggling to pick these four as all of Tavourmina’s work is stunning. I love all the elements in the composition. The objects are my favourite however and I love the use of antique jewellery and trinkets mixed in with flowers. These photographs give me a 16th century atmosphere. The top right hand photo reminds me of a Paul Cezanne still life, because of the skull and candles. I am unsure if the smoke was added after the photo was taken but it adds to the photograph. When I look at Tavourmina’s photograph I can see different scenarios, for example the bottom left makes me feel like a Dutches would have in a drawing room in her elaborate home. I also love how chaotic but precisely placed each object it. Overall I love Tavourmina’s work and I think I have found my new favourite photographer.

These are my final images for Something New brief, I was torn between the soft lavender background or the iconic Sailor Moon background. Overall I am really proud of these and I am very pleased with the final outcome of the two backgrounds.
