“A few weeks back you mentioned that you wanted to start complimenting Neil.” Betsy says and it takes everything in Andrew to keep a straight face when she brings it up. He obviously fails as he sees Betsy looking at him with a slight bit of pity, “How is that going?”

“Fine,” Andrew says and almost winces when the word hits his own ears.

Damn Neil for ruining a word that could have perfectly described how complimenting him has gone in the weeks since their dinner at the diner.

Bodyguard Nathaniel AU

At a young age, Nathaniel Wesninski ends up working for the main branch of the Moriyama family. He builds himself a name, gains status, and creates fear among those lower in the family food chain. He kills to live, putting on his father's smile and carrying out orders. He lives with the nightmares because failure means death. Failure means he will disappear without anyone remembering his name. He fights because he doesn't know how to die quietly. That is...until he is ordered to serve as a bodyguard for an old friend. As he watches, her tail wags once, thumping against the ground.

“Sorry kid,” he mumbles as he worms his hand under her chin to lift her huge head. Her eyes open slightly as he pulls his feet out from under her and sets her head back down.

“Morning.”

“Hmph.”

“How’s that flask of whiskey treating you now?”

“Better than you’d think.” She hauls herself up onto her paws, stretching. “What’s for breakfast, Boss?”

“Not so worried about our supplies now, huh?”

“Shuttup.”

Ballister has never seen a creature that genuinely enjoys hardtack as much as this dog seems to. Perhaps her intense jaw strength has something to do with it. They split a tin of stew, and then the dog bounds over to the saddle, ducks under it, and stands up a saddled and ready horse.

“Are you sure you’re up for this?”

“Have I made it look like I’m not?”

“You ran like hell yesterday and then downed that whole flask of whiskey.”

“And?”

He sighs. “Alright, but we’re keeping it to a walk for a while.”

“Ugh, you’re no fun. What’s the point of the whole ‘rocky terrain’ plan if you’re not gonna take advantage of how well I can run over it?”

“We don’t need you breaking a leg ‘cause you’re hungover, kid.”

“It’s really not that big a deal.”

“Either you’re keeping it to a walk or I’m not getting on your back.”

She groans dramatically, flicking her tail. “Fine. But if I gotta walk then you’ve gotta practice shooting.”

“Fine.” He struggles his way up onto her back - she insists he practice his attempts to get up by himself before she kneels, which he responds to by nudging her closer to a rock he can step onto.

Her throat hurts, but it would hurt more to drink. She knows that. She knows how much it would hurt but the fact remains that she’s incredibly thirsty. It should be impossible to be this thirsty with her mouth so far from dry, but it’s like all the water in her body is going into the drool dripping onto the kitchen floor. She shifts again, a rabbit now. She creeps a little closer to the bowl. Pauses. Creeps forward again. And lowers her head to drink.

Nimona was ready for her throat to hurt. She was not ready for it to spasm violently in response to her trying to swallow. Her vision blurs for a moment as she gags on the pain. Things don’t hurt her this much. They just don’t. This is wrong. This is bad.

Nimona blearily opens her eyes, having to take a moment to wake up even fractionally before she can process Ballister standing over the sofa.

“I got you some breakfast. Ambrosius will be here soon, and then I’ll be leaving.”

“Mm.”

She sticks out an arm, which by now Ballister understands to mean help me up. He gets her sat against the sofa arm and sets a tray on her lap - Dragon Kwisps and one of the high-calorie shakes they’ve been employing to try to curb the hunger. She’s on her fourth bowl of cereal but the time there’s a knock on the door.

The rope goes taught, she turns again, and this time sees that she’s gotten just about close enough to the not-tree for the demon to be able to clamp her rope onto one of the branches. She feels her heartbeat pick up.

“I don’t like this,” she says quietly. As if he’d care, even if he did understand her. He isn’t even looking at her. He’s staring intently at the central trunk of the contraption, holding two fists out in front of him.

Darius pulls his palisman out of his hair. He gives Raine an expectant look until they summon their own staff. The fox palisman is fine. He blinks at Eber and Darius, probably unused to being seen on a staff. But the staff itself… is held together with glue and layers of tape. Because Raine smashed it. Eber still cannot believe they actually did that. “Can you even fly like that?” Darius asks skeptically. “Eda said it's fine,” Raine says. “It's a temporary fix, but it won't fall apart just from flying.” Well. Eber knows who they're riding with. “... I don't think I should take any passengers though,” the bard adds after an awkward pause. Ha! They thought not. Eber jumps onto Darius's shoulder, digging their claws in when he threatens to shake them off. “You shouldn't need to,” the man says. He sighs, giving up on dislodging Eberwolf. “If you're ready?” They leave, then. Eber watches and listens carefully, but they don't run into the Collector the whole way there. Unfortunately, they don't see any people, including the kids, either. Maybe once they're on the ground they can track them? Darius’s breath stutters as the Skull comes into view. It's easy to see why. Nearly a third of the Titan’s head is gone, rearranged into the crown of bone that floats above it. Pacing the uneven floor of the exposed skull cavity, Eber finally spots her. A snarling avian with four… three. Three legs, they realize, as the beast turns to screech at the approaching witches. Raine mentioned something about that, didn't they? Taking her branded arm off? Looks like it affected her cursed form as well. That's five fewer claws Eber needs to avoid, anyway. They touch down on the opposite side of the exposed cavern. Darius places Eberwolf on the floor and wisely gets out of the way. “We're just passing through,” Eber chirps. “Not looking for a fight.” It's only partly a lie. Eber doesn't want to have to fight Eda if they can avoid it. “Fuck off,” the beast roars back. … But they might not have the option to avoid it. Raine takes a step forward. “Eda?” They look directly at the beast, only breaking eye contact for a moment to glance down at her shortened leg. Dumbass. But a convenient dumbass. The beast is now fully focused on them. She charges at the bard as Darius wisely steps aside, giving Eber a chance to circle around behind her. “Eda. I know you're not going to hurt me.” The beast, unsurprisingly, continues rushing forward. She leaps over a large rock, wings flaring and forelegs extended to catch herself on the ground… but she's forgotten, or maybe isn't quite intelligent enough to understand, that she only has the one now. She stumbles. It slows her down just enough. Eber jumps on her back, pinning her wings so they won't break under the sudden weight of the net. And, yes, there IS a net. He summons the heaviest one he can manage and throws it over the both of them.

WIP Wednesday

Alright, I think I've finally worked out a WIP/publishing schedule I like a little bit more. (Or it's more realistic, at least.)

Here's what I'm working on now, and what I've got planned for the rest of January. (I've got fics on the list from now until almost the end of the year, but I don't want to put out that big of a list just yet.) Everything is listed by planned date of publication. :)

1/24/24 - 25DCC, Ch. 11 - "Going Ice Skating" - 1885, young John, Arthur, Dutch, and Hosea having a (mostly) fun day out on the ice.

1/25/24 - Whumpcember Day 11 - "Infection" - Micah Bell H/C feat. Simon Pearson, Susan Grimshaw, and Orville Swanson. "Tiny tree, big splinter, HUGE problem."

Wip Wednesday 7/31/24

These are hella late but here are my sentences for 7/31 :)

“I need you to get some information to the little lord.”

“Ah, I see. And what exactly would I be telling him?”

“Riko is getting out of control. He sent some of the freshman Ravens over to Palmetto to kill one of our players.”

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Yes. the player who was attacked saw who it was and I’m sure there’s a paper trail that leads back to the side branch if not to Riko himself.”

“Alright, I’ll check it out and relay your message. Is there anything else?”

“Thank you, and no, there’s nothing else right now.”

“Very well then, I’ll let you go.”

“Bye,” Neil says, and hangs up the phone, handing it back to Andrew.

He pockets the phone, leans back on his elbows and stares out at the parking lot. Neil doesn’t feel like going back inside so he sits with Andrew and stares at him, admiring how the sun lights up his hair and makes his eyes glow gold.

Neil finishes signing his email, heart pounding in his ears and sends it off before he can think about it too much. He quickly closes his laptop and leans back in his chair, folding his arms behind his head and then takes a few calming breaths.

He does this until he feels his heart slow and gets up to get ready for the day. 

Neil barely makes it through his first class; the professor monotonically goes over the syllabus and then keeps them there for another half hour talking about himself and how he ended up in ‘such a fine establishment’. He resorts to alternating between drawing on the handout given to them at the start of class and stabbing himself in the thigh with a pen.

He meets up with Jean for a late lunch and they both talk about how their classes are going so far.

“I’m just saying, that class is shit. I don’t understand why we need to take it.” Neil says, referring to his undergraduate studies class.

“We have to take it because someone,” Jean replies, stabbing a piece of broccoli with his fork, and then pointing it at Neil, “wanted to explore Europe instead of going to college when we graduated.”

“Whatever,” Neil says, swatting the broccoli away. “It's not like I made you come with me.”

“True, but irrelevant. Besides, if you had gone on your own, who would have been there to take care of you after all of the times you got into fights and needed patching up.”

“I could have done it myself or gone to a clinic,” Neil says, already knowing he’s going to lose this argument.

“Bullshit. I’ve never met someone who hates hospitals more than you do. Also I’ve seen you try to patch yourself up, you’re pretty shit at it.”

“Alright, Alright,” Neil says, putting his hands up in surrender, “you win.”

Lola wastes no time getting into his space, knife in hand, crowding him even more into the car door. 

“So, Junior,” Lola says, like she’s gossiping with a friend, “I’ve just got to know, where’d Mary run off to?” She presses the tip of the knife into his cheek when he doesn’t immediately answer, just enough to draw a drop of blood. 

Nathaniel doesn’t flinch despite the pain he feels and replies, “Like I’d ever tell you that.”

“Maybe,” Lola says, “but I have a feeling you’ll tell me sooner or later.”

Nathaniel wants to question how she plans to do that, but keeps his smart mouth shut, his mind already coming up with multiple ways that she could.

Aaron can tell he’s struck a nerve, the bulging veins on either side of Hill’s forehead giving away just how much he has. 

Halsey steps between them, redirecting Hill’s attention to him and Aaron takes the chance to give Kevin a once over.

Aaron hadn’t thought much of him when he first walked in, having been more focused on Hill. However, now that he’s really looking, he notices how muscular Kevin’s arms are, his jade-green eyes and how he towers over most of the people in the room, including himself.

Aaron turns his attention back to Hill and Halsey, “I look forward to seeing you in class,” Hill says, but Aaron can tell he is still pissed from earlier despite the smile he wears.

He glares at Hill until he’s gone and turns his attention back to Halsey who checks his watch, “I’ve got to go, there’s a call I need to make. Kevin, could you please show Mr.Minyard the Emergency room.”

“Of course, I was on my way over there anyway,” Kevin says.

Aaron gives Kevin his full attention now that Halsey is gone, “You sure know what to say to impress important people huh?”

“I assume you mean Hill.”

Yeah, he’s a pain in the ass but he’s got a lot of influence here. Let me guess, you’re taking Dr.Hill’s class?”

“Yep.”

“Well, if I were you, I’d tone down the animosity. Getting an F in his class is like a bad review from the New York Times; it’ll ruin your career before it even begins.”

Kevin’s gaze snaps to Neil who smiles, “Who showed him?” Kevin demands in a whisper.

“Kevin, your father wanted to support all of your endeavors and also it isn’t like that wouldn’t be on the news.” Andrew says coming up to settle next to Neil, bumping Neil’s upper arm with his shoulder.

Kevin looks at his father, “You watched that movie?” he asks in horror.

“I watched both. I liked the sequel better.” Wymack says and Kevin makes a noise of horror before he brings his hands up to his face to hide his shame.

Made some progress, was a bit difficult because I slept like absolute ✨garbo✨ but got a bit done on two fics. Goal was to finish the scene I intend to post for wip wednesday and I succeeded <3 Going to be like an 800 word snippet because it needs the full buildup to be as fun :P

Each week is based on an alternate universe or trope to theme your creation.

Each week begins on Wednesday at 12:00AM EST and ends on Tuesday at 11:59PM EST.

All creations can be posted on tumblr and/or our collection on AO3. 

All creations can be a rating of your choosing. Please tag and label appropriately.

Additional content to existing work IS accepted, cuz why not?! You can add a chapter to a WIP, write a rec or create a graphic for an existing fic.

You can participate in as many or as few weeks as you’d like.

Week One: March 17-23 – Rebellion  Rebelling against authority can take on many forms and this week is all about standing up to the power! Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: Is Caroline testifying against Damon, or is Klaus taking down Mikael? Are they rebels fighting a historic war? Or, is one of them a corporate whistleblower?? It’s up to you in this week of fighting back! 

Week Two: March 24-30 – Close Proximity   Put Klaus and Caroline in fun-for-readers awkward circumstances like bed-sharing, coworkers, arranged marriage, etc. Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: Are Klaus and Caroline forging an alliance between their warring kingdoms through marriage? Are they stuck sharing an office or hotel room? Maybe they’re stranded on a desert island, or trapped during a hurricane? Join us for all the sexual tension as these two lovebirds are forced to share the same cage all week long! (Please tag dub-con and non-con appropriately.)

Week Three: March 31-April 6 – Fantasy and Folklore Plunge Klaus and Caroline into a unique folklore story or a reimagined fairytale. Explore mythological creatures or a fun fantasy world. And don’t forget about mates! Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: If Klaus wasn’t a hybrid and Caroline wasn’t a vampire, what would they be? Would Klaus be a god? Maybe Caroline is an elf? What if they fight a dragon? This week, the universe and all of its creatures are yours to command! 

Week Four: April 7-13 – Crime This week it’s all about the gritty world of crime — mafia, hitmen, escorts — if it’s illegal, we want you to write about it! Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: What would happen if Caroline robbed a bank and Klaus was an officer that had to take her down? Or Klaus is a mob boss desperate for a partner in crime? Maybe they’re assassins hired to take each other out (and then take each other out)? Join us this week as we dive into the underbelly of society! 

Week Five: April 14-20 – Enemies to Lovers  One of our favorite tropes that somehow seems to follow the well-known equation of hate + murder flirting = sexytimes! Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: Are Klaus and Caroline rival CEOs trying to run each other off the stock exchange? What if they were on opposite sides during war? Or, maybe it all started because a dimpled little creep next door put gum in a bossy know-it all’s hair in the third grade. Join us this week as we put old rivalries, and our favorite couple, to bed! 

Week Six: April 21-27 – All Human  Another popular trope that helps us answer the greatest of what-ifs is when you strip away supernatural Klaroline and put them in all-human situations! Here’s some ideas if you get stuck: Without the supernatural, would Klaus be a banker? What if Caroline was an astronaut? Would they fall in love at a vineyard or cross paths once and go their separate ways? Past, present or future, if your fantasy is to see these two without magic, this is the week for you!
