Hydrogen fuel cell EVs aren't particularly sexy, or at least, they weren't. Say hello to the Hyundai N Vision 74 concept, a high-performance hydrogen fuel cell-powered EV meant to bridge EV power and performance with liquid fuel range. Hyundai's N high-performance sub-brand has been working on battery and fuel cell-powered performance prototypes for seven years now, and the project is beginning to bear some exciting fruit. The N Vision 74 aims to solve the biggest issue with high-performance EVs: the lack of range. The N people call it a "hydrogen hybrid."
Running flat-out, batteries don't last long. A previous all-electric prototype, the RM20e, only had 25 miles of range when driven on a racetrack, and while making the battery bigger would give it more range, it would also significantly increase the weight and hurts performance. Hyundai's solution: add a hydrogen fuel cell instead which combines compressed hydrogen from onboard tanks with oxygen in the atmosphere to create electricity and water, then use that electricity to power the electric motors. With just 4.2 kilograms of hydrogen onboard and a fully charged 62.4-kWh battery, Hyundai claims the N Vision 74 has a range of more than 373 miles when driven gently. It's bound to be much less when driven hard, as the dual rear electric motors suck down electrons to the tune of more than 580 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to give the sleek, angular coupe a top speed of over 155 mph and the ability to hit 60 mph in four seconds. The company is looking into adding a front motor in future prototypes which would reduce acceleration times even further. In addition to adding range, the fuel cell also reduces refueling time to just five minutes. The battery, meanwhile, is capable of charging at 800 volts, which should drop its charging time from 10 percent to 80 percent to under 18 minutes, based on production Hyundai EVs with similar battery technology. The fuel cell can pump out a maximum of 95 kW to help power the motors or recharge the battery.
The fuel cell itself is located under the hood, while a pair of hydrogen storage tanks are fitted in the trunk. A T-shaped battery fits behind and between the two seats, keeping the heaviest component in the center of the car for better weight distribution. Regardless of source, power is fed to a pair of motors on the rear axle, one driving each rear wheel. This allows the computer to perform torque vectoring in the same fashion as an electronically controlled limited slip differential, a trick the N engineers used to great success on the RM20e concept. Keeping the fuel cell, battery, and motors cool presents an enormous challenge, so the N Vision 74 features three separate cooling circuits serving each system separately. The goal is to have the car run a flat-out lap of the challenging Nürburgring Nordschleife without overheating and reducing power.
As cool as the numbers are, they're nothing compared to the car itself. Inspired by the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe concept, the N Vision 74 looks like a restomod '70s supercar. We see a lot of Lancia 037 and DeLorean DMC-12 in the look, enhanced with massive side air intakes and an enormous rear wing, neither of which would look out of place on a modern Lamborghini. We love the turbine-style 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, which have been wrapped in what must be the widest tires ever on a Hyundai, 295 width up front and 325 in the rear. The pixelated headlights from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 give it a real retro-futuristic look we can't help but love. The DeLorean bit is no accident. When Hyundai wasn't able to bring the Pony Coupe to market for a variety of reasons (lack of a proper engine, not to mention lacking general market awareness and acceptance), Giugiaro continued to refine the design and eventually sold the new version to DeLorean.

Shannon Yee is a mechanical engineer. He works at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. After hearing of shortages, he recalls, his team asked: “How can we design a low-cost ventilator that can be made globally?” His team and colleagues in England looked at how these machines are used. And they thought about which of their parts might be available nearly anywhere in the world.
“You have to start from the perspective of the person who needs it,” says Kyle Azevedo. He works at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. The team’s goal, he says, has been to figure out “what is essential” to meet someone’s needs. In some cases, a device might not need all the fancy controls that are standard on U.S. ventilators.
Most ambulance crews use hand-operated bags when patients can’t breathe. They’re called ambu bags. A machine could be added to squeeze them, Yee’s team reasoned. And unlike a person, it could work nonstop for days.
The simple motor and mechanical system that Yee’s team designed inflates and squeezes the bags. A plug-in power adapter or standard 12-volt battery runs it. Add separate tubing and volume controls and this device can breathe for two patients at once. Filters in the tubing keep each patient’s exhaled air from infecting others. (Continued in Part 3. This concludes the article. SOLAR PANELS This section will cover something that I haven’t seen in any articles or books on solar panels. Don’t miss this next section. I hope that by the end, you will agree with me that solar panels are a good idea now and in the future. These are relatively affordable and simple to install using a DIY approach. Solar panels will allow us to continue our lives as normal in many areas, making our transition to TEOTWAWKI easier. Our lives will be easier and we'll be able provide services to our neighbors who didn’t have the time or ability to install them. We can refill their water barrels with our functioning well, and charge their 12 Volt batteries that they have reclaimed from their vehicles. They can also run many 12v items such as lights, windshield wipers, door-window motors, pumps, and other devices. Although my recent article, Using Grid-Tied Solar Panels as a Starter System (Part 1 and Part 2) was a great start, I didn't realize how much my system could do in an off-grid setting until I ran this 10-day test. This was my single greatest off-grid discovery. My grid-tied system can be used off-grid with just one 12v deep-cycle battery ($100). My solar panel setup Grid-tied is what my solar panels are. There are no batteries, only the solar panels and an inverter. The inverter converts the solar panel's DC electricity into the 120v AC electricity that our homes use. Grid-tied can be set up in a few minutes by anyone who is familiar with electric water heaters. There is a large "But ..." grid-tied. Many will remember the grid being cut in many places during the 2021 record-setting California forest fires. Grid-tied solar panel owners wondered: "Why aren't my solar panels working when they are most needed?" Grid-tied solar panel automatically shut down in the event of a power outage. If your solar panels are still feeding into the grid, this is done to protect the linemen who repair it from being electrocuted. This is why the inverter of the solar-array must have an automatic shut down. In a grid-down environment, solar panel systems that are tied to the grid will not work. The system can be disassembled in TEOTWAWKI, and individual panels can then be used. However, it is not possible to have all the components necessary to make it work, including a charge controller. While most people won't need them, solar panels can be used to make privacy fences or shed roofs. What makes my grid-tied system unique? My Sunny Boy 3000 inverter has an accessory called the Secure Power Supply (SPS). This device is unique to the company's inverters. I have electricity even when there is no grid. After I had installed my solar panels, I tested my SPS. Although it looks just like any other outlet in my home, the SPS is wired to the inverter and not the breaker panel that service my shop and charges the grid. It was a simple test that I did back in the day. I connected a drill motor to the socket and pulled the trigger. That was the extent of my testing for that particular prep. My grid-own experiment was a success, and the SPS capability was my most memorable discovery. There was nothing else that came close. This is what happened. The Sunny Boy 3000 Secure Power Supply My grid-down test was over, so I knew it was time to get my freezer back in operation. I went to the shop and activated the SPS unit. It is promoted on the company's website with little information about its capabilities, including one commenter that mentioned a man who used it to power his beer fridge. As I did, they all misunderstood the SPS's capabilities. The SPS can pull 1,500 watts (2,000 on newer models) of electricity from the solar panels in a grid-down event, when all other inverters are at the doornail stage. I used an extension cord to plug in my freezer as the SPS only has a double outlet. It began to run, which saved all my frozen foods. This was a great relief. Another extension cord powered the other items I tried.
Then, I thought about how I could add wires to the SPS so it could feed into my breaker panel and provide electricity for my entire house and shop. After sketching out the schematic and double-checking everything, I decided that it was worth trying out. After connecting the back-feed accessory (search for "transfer switch", and appropriately named "suicide chord") to my house, the electricity started running like it was still on. A person visiting my house who uses electricity wouldn't know that the grid is down. It was an exciting discovery. It was amazing to discover that the SPS could power my entire house and shop, with a few exceptions. Grid-tied solar panels require a disconnect switch to be placed just below the electric meter of the power company. My 24" handle has a padlock that I can use to lock it into the off position. This ensures that the SPS can be used while it is not in use. Also, no unexpected return of electricity from the grid can cause issues with my SPS or inverter. The SPS should be hard wired with the electric panel in a TEOTWAWKI grid down world that lasts for years. Use the Secure Power System After connecting the SPS in my shop and house, I tested each item of electrical equipment I had. The refrigerator was my next test after Day One success with my shop freezer. It started, then it tripped and shut down. I was beginning to lose hope about the SPS being used to power my shop and house. Due to the huge surge of electricity needed to start the motor, the refrigerator went out of commission. Then it lowered back to normal wattage. To my surprise, everything in my house worked after the refrigerator failed. The next step was to see how much I could run simultaneously. This is how I reduced my monthly electricity consumption to just 100 kWh. The average US home consumes 970 kWh each month. Everything in my house, except the fridge and microwave, was functioning simultaneously by the time I stopped turning off appliances and switches. This included the ceiling fan (65w), woodstove fan (95w), box fan (98) and Kitchen Aide mixer (200w medium), rice cooker (335w), 17 light bulbs (135w), TV, DVD player (110w), and the freezer in my shop (92w). The total was 1,145 watts. This was 76% of my available electricity, so I switched on the lights in the shop and well house, followed by a drill press. As expected, the system shut down when I turned on my bench grinder. The motors of bench grinders are powerful and have a high startup surge. These things would never happen to me at the same time so the SPS system is perfect for my needs. The silly grin on my face lasted the entire day. YES! Yes! For items like the countertop oven (1.200w), microwave (1.100w), Foreman grill (1.200w), and bench grinders I can use them so long as I only use a few hundred watts of freezer and lights before I turn them on. All of these items worked individually when tested. These items are usually only used for a few minutes so it shouldn't be an issue to turn off other devices during brief usage. The refrigerator is large, and I don’t use much of it. There are smaller models that use less energy (100w), and, like my freezer's surge phase, they don't require as much power. Another item to add to your list. My grid-tied article mentioned that one of my greatest concerns for getting my homestead off the grid was running my 100w woodstove for many hours each day with a small battery pack. My SPS is now my friend. It can run my blower and charge my deep-cycle battery (131 Ah) before I buy a bigger battery pack. This winter, I will be trying out different parameters depending on the weather forecast. My ten solar panels still managed to produce enough electricity to power my 100w freezer despite being completely overcast during my off-grid testing. My woodstove blower and harvest freezer will not be affected by them. They should have no problems with each other. A system's solar panels will produce more energy on cloudy days if it has more.
I will also experiment with the SPS without any batteries, and only using it to power my reading lamps. The SPS feature is worth a look if you are interested in installing solar panels. Although Sunny Boy claims that their system is unique, I would still recommend checking out other options. This feature alone, IMO, makes solar panels worth it in our prepping. They are very affordable if you install them yourself and well worth the price of gold in a TEOTWAWKI society. The electricity they produce is great for barter or as a good-neighbor gesture. It can be used to charge 12 Volt batteries and to pump water into their barrels. Last thing. One last thing. A quick look at my 2018 inverter records reveals that even on my worst days, 1.5 kWh or more of electricity was still generated. This is enough electricity to power the woodstove blower (100w), for 3-4 hours each day, and the small refrigerator (100w) during the day. Stand-Alone Solar Panels Apart from my 3,000w system of solar panels and the SPS, I also have some standalone solar panels. These panels are fun to use and serve their purpose around the homestead. My deep-cycle battery is kept charged by a 100w solar panel. It also powers my solar water heater as well as my backup 12v home water supply. Even a 100w panel is small enough to charge batteries and power low-wattage devices in a grid-down environment. Generator Experience My most embarrassing, frustrating, humiliating, frustrating, humiliating, and embarrassing part of the test was my generator experience. I lost track of the number of times I said "You idiot!" I heard very few exclamations of "Yes!" and lots of "Come on ..."." The boring details of the mechanical parts will be saved for another day. However, after spending way too much time on it, it became painfully obvious that it would have started by the second pull if I had been more diligent about regular maintenance. If I am not ready for life in TEOTWAWKI, procrastination is my biggest regret. The generator problem was a regrettable part of the off-grid preps. Finally, I realized that the so-called float needle had become corroded in its no-flow position. Gumout and Liquid Wrench didn't work so I pulled carefully with needle-nosepliers. As expected, it was gone. It broke at my thin neck, and I knew that I wouldn't have water for the remainder of the grid-down test. It was like a scene from a bad movie. In The Flight of the Phoenix, all but one of the startershells had been used trying to start the engine. Imagine everyone waiting in bated breath, knowing that their lives depended upon it. They would have known at that moment they were going out of water and would die in the desert. It was me. It was over. I knew it was over. I would eventually run out. It wasn't the best time to open the bubbly. I was so mad at my self. It broke and I had to put it back together. The needle valve regulates how much gasoline goes into the carburetor. I pulled the pull cord and it started up. I could have wept. I had to turn her off because gasoline was leaking everywhere, but I knew it had been fixed. If I hadn't broken the needle valve, I would have been screaming jubilantly "YES!" as the water from the well gushed into my tank. It's so bad that I feel depressed just writing about it. Had this been a real-life Day One of TEOTWAWKI, it would have taken a year or two or three for me to get over that stupid procrastination-based screw-up. Every time I went to fetch water, I would think about it. Every time I saw a small engine I would think about the needle valve. Procrastination, a $3 part, would have a huge impact on my TEOTWAWKI and the lives of others. Water conservation is more difficult than labor. There's no need to help neighbors. No showers. Water conservation up to the day that I die. Procrastination is the root cause of all this. Maintaining a small engine is easy. It just requires regular maintenance, just like your car's oil change. It was so simple.
JB Weld could not fix what simple maintenance could have prevented. I am sorry for exacerbating the point, but it was an important lesson for us. That night, I was depressed and went to sleep. There is one redeeming feature to this experience: "This is a testing, only a testing " I have already purchased two complete carburetor rebuild kit and I will be asking myself "Is it time for maintenance yet?" If it was a real SHTF, I would have tried fuel regulation by restricting tube leading to needle valve to see how that would work. There are many types of needle valves, so finding one that is interchangeable would have been worthwhile. However, it was unlikely that I would succeed. Don't procrastinate! General Electricity: What I Learned Flashlights can only be used for flash-lighting and not lighting. I was shocked at how low my battery power was, even though I had 100+ AAA and AAA plus rechargeables. Rechargeable batteries can only last for a short time so you need to have other lighting options. You can reserve flashlights for flash-lighting. After two hours of reading, most of my headlamps and flashlights became very dim. Kerosene and candles can be used to light the room when there are better alternatives. They are dangerous, finite, unhealthy to breathe, and can blacken walls and ceilings. I could not read by candlelight unless the book were at least 6 inches away. Although it was helpful, the placement of a parabolic mirror behind my candle wasn't ideal. These primitive light sources are analogous with a ferro rod in your GHB/BOB. Why have one when you can use a butane lighter so fast and efficiently? The same goes for candles and kerosene. My only practical lighting source is an RV 12v LED light that can be run off the battery directly without an inverter. I have three of these lights in my possession and am currently looking into other 12v RV accessories. Before I tried using flashlights and candles to read, I didn't realize just how important lighting was. Instead of using a 350w inverter that had failed due to a bad battery core, I decided instead to try light conservation. This meant getting up earlier and doing little things such as showering and cooking while there was still daylight, and then using the keychain flashlight around me for short spurts. These are the Things I Did Right Reducing my electricity usage - The eight years that I spent reducing my monthly usage to 100 kWh was the most significant. Because I didn't use a lot of electricity, it made my off-grid experiment so much easier. This is an important goal for every prepper. The SurvivalBlog article A Vehicle To Help Adjust Your Thinking by R.V. provides a good overview of ways to reduce electricity consumption. Composting toilet – This is an area where I feel safe and can continue my normal life even if the SHTF happens. Both puns intended. Freezer alarms – These indispensible alarms let me know by loud beeping when the freezer temperature or well-house temperature are getting too low. Solar Panels – Solar panels allow life to continue as normal as possible after the SHTF. The single most labor-saving invention of all time is electricity. It is absurd to return to a labor-intensive, primitive lifestyle when you can avoid so much of it. Solar water heater – Hot water doesn't need to be a TEOTWAWKI luxury. There are many affordable ways to make non-electric water heaters that circulate hot water from your existing water heater, heat it up and then put it back in. It is as easy as closing two valves to switch from solar to electric. It is a habitual daily task to switch between solar and electric water heaters. The water heater will still provide hot water under most conditions. I am sure I could trade for many things by letting others use my outdoor shower to shower after the SHTF. Generator - Although I had one, I was unable to use it. Next time! A 12v deep-cycle lithium battery can be used to provide water backup. It's simple, inexpensive, and easy to install.
Solar food dryer – I dry most of my food in the middle of summer, but it was unexpected to dry 20 pounds. It was great to have this because I had bananas left in the freezer from late September. Sunny Boy inverter and SPS - enough already. It was so amazing what it could do, that I couldn't help but smile when I saw the results. DIY and Reference Books – Books were once common, but we now rely so heavily on the internet to get instant information that we often lack the hard copies we need in case of an emergency. My SurvivalBlog archive stick, as well as a rechargeable laptop, will be my best resources for preps. Not only are they useful for articles but also the included library. Pray we won't have to use Where There Is No Dentist! You will find many other useful books. MacGyver skills are a skill that can be learned or inherited. However, it is worth learning. Each group would be a lot more successful if they had their own MacGyver, like Lon the machinist in Patriots. Twelve-Volt Battery - The $100, 131Ah deep cycle battery that I purchased at Walmart has been a great purchase. These batteries can be used as standalones to charge all kinds of batteries, run small pumps for water heaters or other water systems, and for lighting. Even older battery cores can work. I can trade one core for another in my farm store at no cost. I can pick the best core if I bring my $5 electric tester. This tester, which I traded during the editing of this article, holds a 96% charge. It just needed water to stay inside. Questions and Things to Do Writing down questions during the test is a good idea. After the trial ends, you can make a to-do/list list. My own version of the article is 24,000 words and contains a lot of information on how to prepare for next time. You'll be able to recall more details and improve your preparations if you have extensive notes. Closing Thoughts This grid-down test was not only challenging and informative, but also fun. It was a package and not an individual test that is the best way to evaluate our preps. If you are trying to prepare for TEOTWAWKI, the single most important recommendation I can make is to buy solar panels. Make sure that they have a Secure Power System option. You can easily run your entire household on your SPS wattage if you keep your monthly kWh consumption to the low 100s. It's amazing how much you can accomplish with just 1,500w. Start with a 100w panel. Then, you can play around with an old battery core and a $20 charger controller. The generator was my biggest mistake in this test. Bad timing, lack of knowledge or other inexcusable sins can sometimes lead to terrible things. It's a sin that can never be forgiven, but it can be overcome. This test taught me a lot about prepping. Those feelings of failure and stupidity will stick with me for a while, and hopefully they will help me stop procrastinating on important tasks. We are very close to world-changing events. Although it is not yet TEOTWAWKI, we need to be ready for any shortages of food, electricity, or non-perishables. Let's watch Europe this winter to see how it fare. These same events will be coming our way soon or later. It pays to be prepared. During my test, I quickly learned that survival mindset is not difficult to attain. Around Day Four, I noticed a group of vultures flying overhead from a nearby nest as they usually do. I raised my eyebrows and replied, "Not yet guys!" Although it was somewhat disappointing when the event was over, I was happy that I had achieved my goal. Although I wanted to celebrate with a frozen banana smoothie, I had already dried them all. To celebrate, I invited a friend to join me. Then I went in to make a chocolate mint mocha cupcake. I added cocoa to my stocking-up-the-larder to-do list. As I walked past the generator in its on-end location in front of the shop I patted it and said, "You were a worthy adversary, but you won’t get me next!"
