The 7 Weirdest Cars Ever Made by Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth and Jeep
Talking about great cars (and discussing what makes them great) is always fun, but we at Gear Patrol also enjoy looking back at the vehicles that were downright weird. Not the worst cars –though that can be fun, too — but rather, the strangest, most eccentric vehicles that carmakers actually went to the trouble and expensive of developing and selling. Many of said cars remain absolute head scratchers, even with decades of hindsight.

Batteries on the move: Battery trunk relocation
Classic muscle cars are decidedly heavier in the front than in the rear. That should come as no surprise to anyone who has tried to auto cross their American rear drive vehicles. With the engine and all the heavy stuff up front, a muscle car can often have as much as 65 percent of the weight on the front axle. Not only is not that good for cornering, its not great for rear tire grip when under forward acceleration.
So as we review the underhood features of our muscle car, the question becomes, “what can we relocate under here that would make a difference to the weight bias of our car.” Unfortunately, the answer is – “not much” with the exception of that 50+ pound black box we call a battery. In testing it has been proven that moving a battery from underhood to the trunk can change weight balance 1 to 2%. That is a huge improvement.
Lead acid batteries can weight as much as 70+ pounds and as we have seen with some pure race factory offering like lightweight 1968 Dodge Hemi Darts (1968), the factory not only moved the battery to the rear, but installed a super heavy weight battery to help with traction. That’s not a bad idea especially when you consider that a battery in the trunk with high cranking amps is important to overcome the increased length of the battery cables that will be required to activate the starter five times the length of the factory cabling.
Our 1974 Plymouth Duster was a good candidate for a battery-in-trunk modification. With the car stripped to the bare floors, it made it easy for us to demonstrate just how it’s done. In addition, we added a kill switch that would be mounted under the driver’s seat to allow us to turn off all electrical elements of the vehicle – and provide an anti-theft system that would make the Duster that much harder to steal.
The parts shown here were pulled together from a variety of sources, but kits for batter relocation can be found from a variety of vendors from places like Summit Racing and Classic Industries. But for our application, we purchased the master lock out switch and the battery cabling from an automotive supply store and the battery tray from Eddie Motorsports. The Optima Yellow Top 34/78 battery was something we just had on hand. Note that this battery features 750 Cold Cranking Ams and 120 minutes of Reserve Capacity making it perfect for our Southern California-based Plymouth.
So follow along as we send our battery to the trunk. This is a very simple modification that can be completed in about an hour if you have all of the components. You will need simple tools and a hole saw to cut through the sheetmetal to allow the cabling to pass through from the front of the vehicle to the rear. Charged up and ready to go? Here’s how it’s done.
Optima Battery Specs Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 750 CCA Cranking Amps (CA): 870 CA Reserve Capacity (min): 120 Minutes Voltage (V): 12 Volts Battery Type: Deep Cycle, Dual Terminal Terminal Type: Dual Terminal Length (In): 10-1/16 Inch Width (In): 6-13/16 Inch Height (In): 7-7/8 Inch Positive Terminal Location: Top Left Weight (Lbs): 42.9 Lbs.
Moving the battery to the trunk on our 1974 Plymouth Duster could make a 1 – 2% difference in the vehicle weight bias front to rear. With more weight in the rear, handling in corners is improved as well as weight transfer under hard acceleration.
We selected #1 gauge wire to handle the power transfer from our soon-to-be rear mounted battery to the engine components and negative ground point.
With the wire covering stripped off enough to fit into the eyelet, we crimped the eyelet in place with this crimper. We used this steel hammer to apply enough force to the crimping device.
The eyelet must be tightly in place when finished so make sure it does not pull off when this step is complete.
We finished the wire end off with a piece of heat shrink tubing for increased safety.
After rough measuring the length of cable needed for both positive and negative connections, we fed the wires through a hole in the chassis above the rear wheel well on the driver’s side of the interior.
For an added level of security we mounted this kill switch under the driver’s seat within easy access. A kill switch of this type serves two purposes – as a theft deterrent and as a way to shut off power should there be a fire or ignition issue.
To reach the underhood area, the positive cable was fed through a grommet near the gas pedal. Note two things here: first, the hole through which the cable goes has a grommet that will avoid having the sheet metal cut the wire casing at some later date – and second, the wire is strapped to the flooring with wire straps to keep it from moving under the carpet, which can ultimately wear through the cable casing and cause a huge short or fire.
Here is the routing for the positive cable within the interior. Note that we avoided any areas that will mount either seat belts or seat frames.
Our positive cable attaches to the starter solenoid avoiding any exhaust parts or moving components. We added an additional covering over the cable exterior and sealed it from heat and moisture with black electrical tape.
All of our electrical connections were sealed in the same way as previously noted. This Voltage Regulator connection is clean and efficient.
We mounted this Eddie Motorsport battery tray in the trunk with four bolts that come with the kit. Make sure not to cut any holes in the gas tank, fuel lines or suspension parts which lie under the trunk flooring.
Using the same care exhibited when drilling the holes for the battery tray, drill holes in the floor for the positive and negative cables.
Using a sanding disc remove any sheetmetal flashing left by the hole saw.
To avoid any possibility of the sheet metal flooring cutting through the cable and grounding out the battery charge, insert these grommets to provide a cushion between the metal and cable casing.
After using a Dual Action grinding wheel to remove the underbody coating and reveal a raw metal surface, the negative battery cable is bolted to the frame.
With all forward connections in place, connect the cables to the battery. Note that a washer is placed behind the cable to provide a better contact surface. A trickle charger was connected to the battery to make certain that it was at the peak of performance when we went to start our vehicle for the first time.
Our Duster’s headlights shown bright after we were finished showing that we were getting an excellent electrical charge from the battery after its remote placement in the trunk was complete.

ANY BENEFIT concert that Alexis and Co. might organise for the family of Tony “Duster” Bennett would make real sense if Peter Green was there to lead the parade.
For at a time some eight years ago when Duster was reluctant to push his one man band routine it was Green who gave him more encouragement than anyone, urging him to make a career of his music and ultimately bringing him to Mike Vernon’s attention by putting him second on the bill to Fleetwood Mac at the now legendary Blue Horizon Club.
Tony Bennett was almost dogmatic in his beliefs and was not easily persuaded to abandon a career in ceramics and pottery. But with a guitar style similar to Jimmy Reed, a brilliant harmonica technique in the tradition of Slim Harpo and a Heath Robinson rig out which evoked comparisons with Jesse Fuller, Duster quickly made the Surrey club scene all his own just as the Stones and Yardbirds had done five years before.
This quiet, diffident bluesman never really received the acclaim he deserved although down in Surrey – particularly at his ‘home’ club, the famous Gin Mill in Godalming, where he always outdrew Fleetwood Mac, Free, Jethro Tull and so on – he was a legend. His second album “Bright Lights . . .” was recorded live at the Gin Mill and featured his wife Stella, Peter Green (credited as Blue), Top Topham (the old Yardbird) and Tony Mills (his bass player-cum-roadie).
Over this period he became a good friend although he never seemed certain which way his career should be guided. He turned down many tempting offers . . . including a management offer from Peter Grant after touring the States. In fact his overall guardedness probably stems from the days shortly after he quit the Georgia Skin Band and wound up across the national newspapers busking to theatre queues with acoustic guitar, bass drum, hi hat and harmonica. It was something that repulses him.
Coming from Richmond, the sixties home of rhythm and blues, his vista was much wider than that, and his first album “Smiling Like I’m Happy” had every texture of fifties blues from city r&b to loose southern combo music. He would state such diverse influences as Tommy McClennan on the one hand and Bobby ‘Blue’ Band on the other.
When it looked as though Duster’s career was heading into a rut John Mayall asked him to join the band for a British and American tour. But on his return Duster’s career once again fluctuated. He’d built up a huge following in British clubs and in the States, but afer an abortive attempt to get his own band going with American RICK WRIGHT he went into a recession and over the past five years had largely fallen into oblivion, changing his base from Hampton to Dorking and finally to the Midlands. His third album “12DBs” had not been wholely successful and once he quit Mike Vernon’s Blue Horizon label his recording career was at an end.
But despite his relative absence from the music scene over recent years he will be greatly missed, not only for his genuinely self-effacing, philanthopic demeanor but also because he went as far as anyone in proving that white men could indeed sing the blues. – JERRY GILBERT

Brittany Force Clinches First Top Fuel Championship at NHRA Finals!
Like Father Like Daughter… Brittany Force Clinches the 2017 Top Fuel Championship at the NHRA Finals
In the quarterfinal round of eliminations Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona, Brittany Force clinched the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel world championship—making her only the second female racer to ever take drag racing’s highest honor, with the first being legendary racer Shirley Muldowney back in 1982.
Brittany Force pilots her Monster Energy Top Fuel car to an event win at the NHRA Finals beating out Shawn Langdon who smoked the tires off the line.
Steve Torrence, who entered the race as the Top Fuel points leader, fell to 2016 world champion Antron Brown’s 3.691 pass at 323.81 in the quarter finals leaving the title up for grabs. On the very next pass, Brittany Force, daughter of 16-time Funny Car world champion John Force, drove her Monster Energy dragster to a 3.679-second pass at 328.22 mph, defeating Richie Crampton and his 3.757 pass at 323.81 thus giving her the 30 points necessary to guarantee a Top Fuel championship title.
Brittany Force, Daughter of racing legend John Force, celebrates on stage with both a Wally for the event win and a medal around her neck representing her Top Fuel championship win.
“I can’t believe we are here, it seems like a dream,” Force said. “The reason we are here is because of that Monster team and all the support I have and all the sponsors. Everyone at JFR and that is the reason we are here. We struggled, we had our ups and downs, but we pulled it together when it mattered most. I give all of it up to my crew chiefs, Alan Johnson and Brian Husen. They are the ones that made this possible. They always had my back and they kept pushing me. That is what my Monster team did; they never gave up on me, pushing and fighting and never gave up. I can’t believe we are here. I have to thank my dad, my family, they always had my back no matter what. This is a very proud moment. I can’t believe we are here. It is the support system you have around you and that is why we are here.”
John Force celebrates after watching his daughter, Brittany, win in the quarterfinals and secure her championship victory.
Despite having already locked in the championship, Force, who was also the No. 1 qualifier, went on to win the event by defeating Shawn Langdon with a 3.668 pass at 330.07 when he smoked the tires in the final round. She finishes the season with four race wins, the first coming at the New England Nationals in Epping, N.H. Force went on to win three events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship, the Dodge NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa., the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals and this weekend’s season-ending event. She has two runner-up finishes and two No. 1 qualifiers.
Robert Hight (Funny Car), Bo Butner (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won world championships in their respective categories at the final 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event. The race winners at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona were Force (Top Fuel), Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Butner (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle).
The 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season will kick off with the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtecttheHarvest.com Feb. 8-11 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Robert Hight clinched the Funny Car World Championship in the first round on Sunday, eight years after his first championship win in 2009.
Bo Butner ran the gauntlet at the NHRA Finals, winning the Pro Stock class and propelling him to an unlikely championship victory over Tanner Gray.
Eddie Krawiec rode his Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle bike to yet another championship title by simply qualifying for the NHRA Finals in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class.

Pure Stock Drag Racing: The Way It Ought To Be!
When over a 120 primo muscle cars show up at a drag strip, fun things are going to happen. Especially when any one of these rides could get big money rolling across the auction block at Barrett-Jackson or Mecum. But instead of static displays with the owners obsessively polishing the fenders and using Q-tips to clean off excessive wax build-up on the door jams, we’ve come to a place were the owners are doing high-gear burnouts, getting sideways, and flogging their muscle cars for every last ounce of horsepower.
Where is this mythical place you ask? Well, this is annual Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race (PSMCDR) held every September at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, Michigan. If you’ve never heard of PSMCDR, well shame on you. This event has been happening for over 20 years and brings together the largest assortment of muscle cars from the 1950s all the way up to 1979. And not just any muscle cars, we’re talking about rarities and oddities along with the usual cast of bad Mopar dudes like Six Pack Bees, Hemi ’Cudas, and Max Wedge Belvederes.
If you’re afraid of getting dead bugs on your grille, stone chips on the lower quarters, and caked-on tire rubber from doing burnouts on your Redlines or Goodyear Polyglas GTs, then park your muscle car in the pits and watch from stands. Just remember, you’re missing out on participating in one of the coolest racing events ever. It doesn’t matter if your Mopar runs 14s or high 11s, the Pure Drags is one of the last remaining grassroots racing venues that you can have fun, even if your win light doesn’t come on. If you’re looking for a safe and cool event to race your prized Mopar, the Pure Stock Drags is where it’s at.
The basic rules are simple. Any car built from 1955 to 1979 in the United States or Canada with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles is allowed. This eliminates factory lightweight Super Stock package cars like 1965 A990 B-Bodies, 1968 Hemi Barracudas, Darts, and Ford T-Bolts. Also, cars must be factory equipped with a minimum of four-barrel carburetion, dual exhaust, and other factory-installed equipment that promotes a high-performance intent and image. Cars are paired-up based on time trial e.t.’s and compete in a best-of-three heads-up shootout. You see, simple and fun.
There are also safety considerations the event organizers and track put in place. Drivers must wear long pants, cars running 13.99 and quicker must have an approved Snell 2005 helmet and seatbelts, batteries must be secured, and radiators must have an overflow catch can of at least 16 ounces. Also, all accessory belts must be in place and tight to operate the water pump, alternator, and power steering.
That said, if you want to play, don’t think you can show up with a pair of disguised aftermarket aluminum heads painted Hemi orange on your 440 Magnum. The Pure Stock tech guys are very savvy and have seen it all. The competitors also police each other to keep the spirit of “stock.” You know some of these motors have breathed-on induction and are super blueprinted, but show up with a 500 cubic-inch stroker engine, and the PSMCDR organizers will show you the gate.
You must run the stock intake, carb, cylinder heads, block, and other items for the year, make model, claimed. The camshaft must be stock lift but there’s some leeway with the duration. The compression ratios and blueprint specs are very similar to the NHRA Stock Eliminator guidelines. Don’t forget, you’re also limited to a street tire that cannot exceed a 60-Series width. Drag Radials are not allowed, even if “DOT approved” is stamped on the sidewall.
There’s also the 11.50 ET rule that basically says if you run an 11.49 or faster, you’re out of the show. PSMCDR folks feel that by capping the e.t., it’ll prevent cubic dollar competitors from ruining the true nature of the event.
As always, there was a great assortment of cool Mopars wreaking havoc on the Brand X competitors at the 2017 event. So check out our coverage and see Street Hemis, Max Wedges, 440 Six Packs, and high-winding 340s do what they were intended for: destroy the competitor in the next lane.
If you’re looking to get off the lawn chair at the cruise nights and do something fun with your Mopar, next year’s Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race is scheduled for September 14 and 15 at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex.
Eric Simpson in his COPO Camaro watch helplessly as Rick Mahoney’s hard charging 1968 Hemi Super Bee goes marching on by with a 11.62 pass to Simpson’s 11.68. Mahoney’s Bee was the number-one qualifier at this year’s Pure Stock Drags and is a real deal Hemi car. That beautiful QQ1 Bright Blue Poly paint is stunning.
For many years, longtime Mopar guru Bob Karakashian made a reputation at the Pure Stock Drags with his strong running 1969 A12 Six Pack Super Bee, however, he parked it and has been flogging his original 1970 Hemi ’Cuda. He was the third fastest Mopar at this year’s event by qualifying with stout 11.73. He was paired against Ken Riebels’ 1966 427 Stingray but the Rat-motored Corvette was no match for the mighty Hemi as Bob won his match up.
Tom Hoover Jr.’s legendary father, Tom Hoover Sr., developed and created the legendary Max Wedge and 426 Hemi for Chrysler back in the day. That’s probably why his 1964 Plymouth Belvedere runs so strong. Both he and his father worked on this car until his father’s passing in 2015. The blue Plymouth, with a 426 Max Wedge for motivation, was the second fastest Mopar with an 11.64 at 121.06. Despite being a Plymouth, there’s some Ramchargers magic under that hood.
We love Chargers, especially 1968s. Dan Kruger from Holland, Michigan, ran a best of 13.57 at 104.66 in his four-speed car. This Charger R/T, complete with the correct 15-inch disc brake wheel covers and Hemi exhaust resonators, could’ve grabbed the OE Gold award at some Mopar shows but instead, Dan was flogging it mercilessly.
Frank Remlinger’s 1969 Dart GTS was probably the strongest-running Mopar small-block at this year’s race. The high-winding 340, breathing through the stock Carter AVS carb and cast-iron intake and exhaust manifolds, turned in an eye-opening 13.16 at 103.89. Here, Frank’s about to put the Pontiac Tempest GT-37 on the trailer.
Old-school tricks still work as Norm VerHage iced-down the intake on his 1969 ’Cuda 440 is search of lower e.t.’s and more mph. It worked. He was able to get the ’Cuda 440 solidly in the 13s with a 13.86 at 97.78. Many of the other Pure Stock competitors were doing the same because of the unseasonably high temps.
Former Mopar NHRA racer Jim Keyes is no stranger Hemi-powered machines. He’s had his 1967 Hemi Coronet R/T since it was new, even racing it in SS/DA with WO components back in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Now in Pure Stock form, Jim had laid down an 11.59 at 119.39 but on the next pass, he violated the 11.50 rule with an 11.48 run and was forced to withdraw from competition. Jim was not happy!
If you want to go fast at the Pure Stocks, bring carburetor jets, a timing light, and tune for the weather/track conditions. Here, Bob Karakashian changes the Carter AFB jets on Michael Kilano’s 1970 Hemi Road Runner.
There’s something about a black Hemi Plymouth GTX we find very sinister. This one belonged to Steve Abbosh and he’s not afraid to grab gears and thrash on it. Steve went 13.42 at 103.11 and like many of his fellow Mopar racers, shut down his competition.
Dave Watt’s 1973 Duster 340 quickly dispelled the myth that smoggers can’t run. His 13.78 at 98.48 was more than ample for him to get the win light and sending his competitor in a classic 1966 Pontiac GTO packing.
Norm VerHage is seen here on a 13-second blast in his 1969 ’Cuda 440. There’s always debate in the Mopar camp on how restrictive the exhaust manifolds are on a big-block A-Body. We don’t care, neither does Norm. He’s just out flogging his combination in search of more speed on a real M-Code 440 ’Cuda.
Pete Papzian’s beautiful 1968 Plymouth GTX, which is a carbon copy of the one used in the 1968 Plymouth brochure, was running consistent 13.50s all weekend with its tuned 440 Super Commando. Pete bought the GTX back when Richard Nixon was President.
Michael Kilano avoided disaster on his Road Runner as the Air Grabber hood was left unlatched on the run against Tom Hoover Jr.’s Max Wedge Plymouth. Michael noticed the hood coming up at half-track, lifted, and aborted the run.
Mike Marple (in orange shirt) does some bench racing with a spectator at the Pure Stock Drags. Mike’s real A12 Road Runner ran consistent 12.30s at 112 but came up just short in competition.
It may look like a restoration showpiece but under that chrome dome air cleaner sits a Ray Barton prepared 426 Hemi that makes over 700 horsepower. Based on the 123 mph trap speed on Mahoney’s 4,000-lb Super Bee, we’d say it’s probably a lot more.
Like most Mopars competing at the Pure Stock Drags, Jim Bowman’s 1969 A12 Six Pack Super Bee is the real deal and is also a four-speed car. Jim is one of the few brave souls to bang gears and if the glove box door pops open on the 1-2 shift, he knows it’s a good run.
Who doesn’t love a good running Mopar small-block? Tom Cannon’s clean 1970 Duster 340 was clicking off mid 13-second times, which is pretty impressive considering Tom was launching off the line and rowing the gears on skinny 70-Series Goodyear Polyglas tires.
Bob Karakashian 1970 Hemi ’Cuda stretches its legs in high gear as he ran almost 118 going through the traps. Did we mention this is a real R-code ’Cuda?
It’s just as much fun hanging out on the top end to watch these Mopar’s pull away from their competitor. Here, Steve Abbosh’s 1969 Hemi GTX shows its taillights to this poor GTO.

Mopars Shoot It Out On The Dyno At The 2017 Nats!
Ever since the second automobile was built, gearheads have been battling each other like rock ’em sock ’em robots. There’s something about gasoline and gears that brings out the primal competitor in all of us. As early as 1878, motorized mayhem engulfed America. Back then, the state of Wisconsin offered a $10,000 prize to whoever could drive the fastest from Green Bay to Madison. True story. One thing those early racers soon discovered: junk breaks. The 201-mile road race was completed in 33 hours and 27 minutes for an average speed of 6 mph. The important thing here: two cars started the race, but just one finished.
In the intervening 139 years, vehicular and bodily damage from racing has simply become an accepted fact. This leads to the phenomenon that about five seconds after the typical wing nut decides he wants to go racing, the speed parts and the safety gear go in, and the functionality and drivability totally disappear. Adding insult to injury, guys buy tow trucks and trailers to move their racecars, meaning they never get to drive them the way they really want (if they’re completely honest with themselves). It’s the inevitable deal you make with the devil if you want to win races and live through it all.
You love stomping the loud pedal out on the mean streets, but that’s at odds with turning your pride and joy into a racecar. Unfortunately, scratching that competitive itch usually means losing the practical factor, or does it? That was certainly the sad state of affairs before Mopar Muscle created the Dyno Showdown sponsored by Petty’s Garage.
Held at National Trail Raceway (Columbus, OH) in conjunction with the Mopar Nats each August, the Dyno Showdown allows street-driven, licensed, registered, and insured Mopars to truly race each other on a level playing field without having to be racecars. No need to hack up your interior for a rollbar, put a spool and slicks on it, build a science-project suspension, or yank everything out for a weight advantage. Just drive it through the gate and onto the dyno rollers. What could be simpler than that?!
The “dyno rollers” in question happen to be the Midwest Mobile Dynojet chassis dyno operated by Redline Motorsports out of Bloomington, IL. These guys do dyno events across the country and know how to get cars on and off the dyno safely and quickly. With a reputation for accurate, reproducible results, the Midwest Mobile Dyno was the only choice for us. Think of it as a portable racetrack, but without any of the hassle. It isn’t cheap, and that’s why we were so incredibly grateful to the guys at Petty’s Garage for picking up the tab. Petty’s Garage has its own Dynojet, but as a permanent in-ground piece of equipment, it can’t be easily relocated from Randleman, NC to Columbus!
Petty’s Garage did, however, bring a transporter chock full of cars and parts, which was displayed right next to the dyno. They brought out the Smithfield Foods Giveaway Superbird and a supercharged late-model Petty Challenger, not to mention a ton of parts that they were offering free installation on at The Nats. Visitors to the Petty transporter quickly learned that Petty’s Garage not only sells parts for late-model Dodges and Jeeps, but also builds complete cars, from late-model Hemi Challengers to classic restorations.
As for the Dyno Showdown, it was a one-day affair that went down on Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. (The Mopar Nats took place over the course of the entire weekend of August 11 – 13, 2017.) It was open to any street-legal Chrysler-/AMC-powered, Chrysler-/AMC-bodied vehicle that is registered, licensed, and insured. (Sadly, none of the AMCs at The Nats made an appearance at the dyno.) To make the playing field level, we divided the cars into one of four classes: Vintage Power-Adder, Vintage Naturally Aspirated, Late-Model Power-Adder, and Late-Model Naturally Aspirated.
Throughout the day, Mopar men and women made their way to the dyno with their machines, and signed up to compete. As competitors gathered, they watched their fellow Showdown competitors run on the dyno while emcee Clarence Barnes announced all the action. The beehive of activity also included photographer John Machaqueiro, who was rapidly photographing every car that competed, and your editor, who was dutifully broadcasting the live feed to the Mopar Muscle Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
In all, 25 competitors crossed the dyno that Friday (plus a few race machines that asked real nice that we couldn’t say “no” to). We got four red-hot winners for our efforts. Rick Trunkett three-peated in the Vintage Power-Adder class in his 1972 Duster with a crazy 1,530 hp. (He even elected to forego a second back-up run. That’s confidence!) Luther Abel floored the crowd early and hung on to the lead with his 440-powered 1979 Duster in the Vintage Naturally Aspirated class (426 hp). Hellcats understandably had a stranglehold in the Late-Model Power-Adder class, and Ron Young’s 2015 Hellcat Challenger didn’t disappoint with 670 hp. Last but not least, the Late-Model Naturally Aspirated class was dominated in solid fashion by Jason Werner’s 2010 SRT8 Challenger (481 hp).
The biggest surprise of the day, however, was Larry Rose’s Hellcat-powered 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE which laid down 617 hp in the Vintage Power-Adder class (click here for more). This is a car that shouldn’t even exist. Until now, a convincing, non-hacked-together Hellcat powertrain swap into a vintage Mopar has evaded all but the most well-equipped professional shops. Larry, egged-on by his wife, Kara, dove into the deep end, and figured it out on his own, using the engine, plumbing, harness, console, shifter, computer, pedals, and 8-speed automatic transmission from a totaled Hellcat. We liked it so much, we put it on the cover of the February 2018 issue of Mopar Muscle, and gave him the Mopar Muscle Dyno Showdown Editor’s Choice award.
Did you miss out this year? Don’t fret, the Mopar Muscle Dyno Showdown sponsored by Petty’s Garage will be back at The Nats next year. It’s free, it’s first-come, first-serve, and it’s happening at National Trail Raceway on Friday, August 12, 2018!

The crew at Midwest Mobile Dyno has been helping us put on the Dyno Showdown at the Nats for a few years now. Their Dynojet portable dyno has proven to be reliable and accurate when the chips are down.
Petty’s Garage stepped up huge this year by sponsoring our Dyno Showdown. Their booth at The Nats was a hub of activity all weekend long as they were offering free installation for parts purchased on site. They will be sponsoring the Dyno Showdown next year on August 12, 2018, so save the date!
Competitors and passers-by could check out the latest dyno results in all four competition classes on the dry erase board, which was lovingly updated by emcee Clarence Barnes!
There’s always a crowd gathered around the dyno when a car makes a run. The Dyno Showdown is centrally located in the manufacturer’s midway next to the dragstrip starting line at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, OH.
Ted English poses with his 1969 Plymouth Road Runner at last year’s Dyno Showdown on August 12, 2016. Ted was the victim of a tragic accident on July 22, 2017, just three weeks before the 2017 Showdown. Ted was looking forward to the Dyno Showdown, so his wife, Janet, and his friends brought the GTX down one last time to run on the dyno. We remember Ted as a cheerful, outgoing soul and we will miss him!
Our four trophies Sponsored by Petty’s garage were given to Luther Abel (Vintage Naturally Aspirated), Rick Trunkett (Vintage Power Adder), Jason Werner (Late-Model Naturally Aspirated), and Ron Young (Late-Model Power Adder). Our Editor’s Choice plaque went to Larry Rose and his Hellcat-powered 1970 Dodge Challenger.
Last year, the top overall spot was snatched by Rick Trunkett and his twin-turbo 1972 Plymouth Duster, which recorded 1,320 hp at the rear wheels, which blew the tent off the dyno booth with its exhaust. This year, Trunkett easily bested his 2016 effort with 1,530 hp. This year we kept the tent clear of Trunkett’s downpipe!

Mopar Highlights From The Winternats In Pomona!
Mopars stand up and salute the Chrysler flag at the 2017 NHRA Winternationals.
The NHRA kicked their season opener Winternationals in Pomona on February 9 -12, and despite being outnumbered by the Chevy and Ford camps in the Stock and Super Stock classes, the Mopar contingent put on a great show by running fast and going rounds. This year’s event had scores of iconic Dodge and Plymouth muscle that included Hemis, Max Wedges, 440 Six Packs, and numerous small-blocks in various configurations, blasting down the strip and hangin’ ’em high.
The Winternationals is steeped in tradition as it’s been held at the same location since its inaugural event in 1961. The starting line at the LA County Fairgrounds (now called Auto Club Raceway at Pomona) has seen its share of Mopar heroes like Garlits, Sox, and Landy, who dumped the clutch and turned their slicks in anger. They assaulted the quarter-mile with the intentions of putting the opponent in the next lane on the trailer and sending them packing.
It might be 2017, but the staging lanes at the Winternationals were filled vintage Mopars from the last 50 years that were ready once again to do battle on these sacred grounds. But don’t let the appearance of the vintage Chrysler racing iron fool you. Under the hoods, the engines have the latest technology in cylinder head, camshaft, piston ring, and block machining to squeeze the last ounce of power while making sure it passes the NHRA’s Tech Department litmus test for Stock and Super Stock legality.
But forgot all the techno-babble for a moment and just enjoy this awesome collection of images of Mopars doing what they do best when they hit the strip and do battle at the NHRA Winternationals!
Longtime Mopar racer Don Little and his ’70 Hemi Challenger Stocker is the car we’d like to take to the cruise night and car show. He qualified his E-Body in the number four spot with a 9.849 at 133.22 mph.
Stock and Super Stock have some interesting combinations and John Dourlet’s ’70 Plymouth Duster is one of them. Take the approved 5.9L Magnum from the Mopar Drag Pak, drop it into a Duster, and you get a FGT/J combo. John went four rounds and received the Dodge Top Finisher Award for Super Stock.
“West Coast” Jerry Stein’s 440 Dart was dialed-in and on target during the Winternats. It clicked off a string of consistent 10.70 e.t.s while breathing through the factory Carter AVS carb. He made it to the quarterfinals.
Steve Wann’s ’62 413 Max Wedge Plymouth Sport Fury was the oldest Mopar in the pits but then again, the first Winternationals was held in 1961.
Don’t tell Mike Cotton from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma that you can’t make a 383 run. He’s extracted a ton of power from the B-engine all while adhering to the strict NHRA Super Stock rules.
Still kicking ass and taking names at the Winternationals for over 50 years, the 426 Max Wedge still remains a killer package in Stock Eliminator. John Shaul’s AA/SA ’64 Fury launches like a guided missile.
This ’71 ’Cuda E/SA Stocker stood out from the pack. A stout high-compression 340 sits under that Shaker and when driver Chad Landon whacks the Thermoquad, it moves out in a hurry.
Second-generation Mopar racer Jon Irving may have had his ’71 Demon 340 tamed down, but it still left the starting line like a bat out Hell.
The slowest Mopar competing at the NHRA Winternationals was Bill O’Connor’s ’80 Horizon EF/S entry. It traveled the quarter-mile in 16.94 but fell victim in round one.
Recent NHRA rule revisions allow the 1966-’67 Street Hemi Dodge Coronets (and their Plymouth counterparts) running in Stock Eliminator the use of “RO/WO Package Car” goodies such as hood scoop, Vanke Intake, battery in trunk, and other cool things. Dwight Machael’s A/SA entry puts them to good use.
Darrin Smith knocked the dust off his ’68 440 Dart and brought it to the Winternats. The SS/FA machine had been parked for while as Darrin built his ’64 383 Dodge Stocker. It’s good to see the machine again.
We’re jealous of Steve Wann; he entered the Winternationals with two Plymouth Max Wedge cars. His super clean white ’63 Super Stocker (and his ’62 413 Max Wedge Stocker) both mean business.
This ’67 Plymouth Belvedere II Street Hemi Super Stocker was simply stunning. It made its NHRA national event debut at Pomona and Ryan Mangus wasted no time breaking it in.
Once again, West Coast racer Randy Loge brought his ’72 Demon 340 to play with the Chevys and Fords. The high-flying A-Body hooks hard, goes straight, and is super consistent when it comes to running the numbers.
This ’63 426 Max Wedge Plymouth Savoy looks like a time machine that could transport us back in time. With low 10 second e.t.s, it would be a quick trip.
Wagons in all body styles are cool. A low-compression 318 breathing through a Carter Thermoquad might power John Irving’s ‘78 Dodge Aspen, but it will plant you firmly in the seat when the gas pedal gets mashed.
Tim Hall has been racing his ’74 Dart Sport 360 for years. The “smogger” small-block clicks off low tens at ease without breaking a sweat.
It’s not 426 Hemi, 426 Max Wedge, or even a 426 Street Wedge. Darrin Smith, always up to a challenge, built a 383 for this ’64 Dodge Stocker. Based on the time slips we’ve seen, he’s got it figured out.
We love the variety of engine combos in Super Stock and the ’65 Dodge of John Winslow Sr. is a prime example. He runs the lowly 426 Street Wedge but has no problem making the competition look twice when he leaves the starting line.
Small-block Darts make killer race cars, and Larry Gilley’s ’69 Swinger is a prime example. Its high-compression, high-winding 340 runs heads-up with various big-block Chevys in the E/SA class and in most cases, puts them on the trailer.
Former NHRA World Champion Chuck Rayburn usually runs his cross ram Race Hemi ’64 Plymouth in Stock Eliminator, but he wanted to try out some new parts. He moved over to Super Stock during the Winternationals but was sidelined early.
The semi-final B/SA matchup featured Chad Loge’s ’70 440 Six Barrel GTX up against Jerry Emmons’s 396/375 Camaro. Loge had a killer .018 light but the Chevy just got him at the top end.
Another semi-final race had two A-Bodies going at it. Justin Jerome’s ’73 Duster 340 got the win as John Irvin’s ’71 Demon 340 broke out by a mere 0.003 of a second. Justin was on his way to the finals.
Justin Jerome’s Duster 340 marched all the way to the finals but had to settle for R/U against Emmons big-block Camaro. Justin had a better reaction time but took too much of the stripe and broke out by 0.045. Justin didn’t walk away empty handed, he got a check for $500 from Dodge for being the Top Finisher in Stock Eliminator.
