A Salute to the Heroes of Yultong
To commemorate the 73rd anniversary of that heroic occasion, I am reblogging the piece on the actions of the 10th Battalion Combat Team (10th BCT) during that fateful 2 days of non-stop fighting in Yultong.
On April 22, 1951, one of the greatest battles in the Korean War erupted as Chinese troops attacked the Allied forces along the Imjin River in what is now remembered as the Chinese Spring Offensive. It was here where a 900-strong Philippine contingent of soldiers distinguished themselves, holding fast and even conducting a surprise counterattack to stymie the full-blown Chinese attack. To…

Sent into battle to aid strangers in need
Gain independence, our forces will lead
Final solution when all others have failed
Liberation is coming our path has been laid
- Light in the Black, Sabaton
With the recent announcement that the Philippine Army's 4th Special Forces Company would be deployed to join the United Nation's Light Infantry Battalion for peacekeeping operations, I decided to commemorate the moment by remembering the first time the Philippines participated in a UN military operation.
Despite fighting an insurgency within its territory, the Philippines was one of the first countries to respond to the UN call for troops to aid South Korea during the Korean war. This force the Philippines would send would be known as the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK).
The first unit to arrive from the Philippines was the 10th Battalion Combat Team (BCT). Initially the unit was supposed to be an armored unit, with a company of Sherman tanks. However, these tanks were sent ahead of the battalion and, with UN forces trapped in the Pusan permeter and in desparate need for armor, US forces comandeered the tanks and promised the Philippines to replace them. Sadly, due to logistics issues, replacement Shermans never came. The unit did, however, recieve M24 Chaffee tanks, which would serve as the main armor for the unit for the entirity of its deployment.
The 10th BCT, due to its experience in counter-insurgency warfare, would be assigned to the rear lines of UN forces in order to hunt down enemy forces that remained in the rear. But later on they would be deployed to the front, attaching themselves to a US division.
During the battle of Yultong, the 10th BCT would distinguish themselves by holding the line despite impossible odds. Facing an entire enemy regiment on its own, and suddenly finding itslef outflanked on both sides, the 10th BCT managed to hold the line, never retreating despite the onslaught.

Remembering the PEFTOK and the Battle of Yultong (22 - 23 April 1951)
During the Korean War in the 50s, the Philippines sent battalion-sized units to the conflict area in answer to the UN's call for assistance to the South Korean government. Truly grateful for your service.
During the Korean War in the 50s, the Philippines sent battalion-sized units to the conflict area in answer to the UN’s call for assistance to the South Korean government. Hostilities had started when North Korea staged a surprise attack in June 25, 1950. This led to the fall of Seoul, South Korea’s capital. The app is designed specific to students needs by looking at their budget and dietary preferences.
This project has been developing on the idea of ‘Creating an original product/service for students in order to assist their budget and food planning decisions’. Being students ourselves, we understand how tricky and time consuming it can be to organise meals for yourself throughout the week. Therefore, we have created an application called ‘KamaKai’ which is a solution for students poor eating habits. The intention is to provide an assistant that will organise a meal plan and weekly shopping list for the students based on the budget they have, and their dietary requirements/preferences. Alfred the avocado will give them step-by-step instructions on how to cook each of their meals, and will remind them when it’s time for dinner.
These designs were iteratively designed and reviewed by the individuals in the group, students from BCT and the members from CfLat. The main concern about the idea behind these icons were ‘Does the background colour satisfy the users according to the idea behind the app?’. At some point, the idea was constantly turned down because the background colour itself wasn’t approachable as the colour combination either didn’t present the nutritious and healthy eating side of it nor the maturity side as this was mainly for the students who are at the age of being independent. It was slightly becoming a kid-like icon. The icon with orange in the background was approved by the group as we liked the idea of having the colour of fruits and vegetable but after showing the design to Cflat people without telling them what the group thought, they instantly commented on the side of the colour not showing the side of nutrition. This comment was helpful to us as we started to realise what the students would possibly think after seeing the icon because it is one of the realities that us humans still ‘judge the books by its cover’. What I’m trying to say is once the description is given under the app, we wouldn’t want to give them a chance to criticise on the icon. But instead, we wanted to keep everything constant and clear. Therefore, we did a survey and got most responses as ‘they would prefer things to be presented as the colour showing the green side of it’. We chose that idea then judged the icon aesthetically and we came to a conclusion that all greens do not look as pleasing. At this point, the colour green was chosen for the background as well but was played around with a lot of fades. We felt that this was important as an aspect because the avocado itself had vibrant colours itself that we did not want the background to disturb the main aspect of the icon. But because the group liked the slight orangey, yellow for the background as we all knew the what was behind the app, we decided to keep the yellowish colour not for the icon but for the internals.
The image shown below is the constant design that was used through the app.
The icon shows below is for the final iteration as the button so it doesn’t leave a chance for the users to criticise. The icon visually describes the app.
The reason behind that was because the recipes we have for our app is not just simple ones but it has international food recipes too. This will be further developed. We have roughly 30 recipes but after taking a step back, more recipes were deleted because we focused more on the nutrition side then just having normal recipes.
We needed to focus a lot more on the recipes in the beginning because the ingredients aren’t something that can be randomly mention without having to look for details because firstly, there are a lot of people who has dietary requirements, most has health problems and the rest are religious. Therefore, we needed to closely view the recipes as we do not want our app, it’s features and it’s useful content causing harm to any users especially when we have already set a goal to develop this to iOS and finally launch it into android and iOS once completed. It is believed that once the trust is broken, it is hard to gain. We have taken this concept of trust as a group towards this project because we need our users to trust us to provide the with a decent app which gives them a service of useful, correct and harmless information.
Under this criteria, the interfaces are implemented with detailed, yet simple features which are understandable and easy for the users to get a grip onto. The tutorial of the app is shown in the video with the interviews that took place while the app was under construction. Students from Bachelor of Creative Technology were interviewed, from business school, engineering school, AuSM president from AUT, Financial Advisor from AUT student hub and AUT Registered Nutritionist. We have gained information according to their thoughts, ideas, experience, needs and wants for the students and implemented an application for android which at this stage would help them at a very high level. With the information given and suggested, the interfaces for the app is now at its best and approved by the group and AUT Cflat app lab members. The designs for the app was also constantly iterated until the end of the project and is still in process for next year to be developed in iOS.
The best part about this project was ‘EVERYTHING WE DID HAD A REASON BEHIND IT’. The set up for the showcase day which will be held on the 10th of November from 6pm-9pm at WG Level 11, AUT, 2017 was very costly and time consuming. Either we spend a little or not, it would all depend on how we present our first part of the project. We purposed a lot of different notorious products which we thought of pacing on the table. Value is added by placing raffle draws. We needed something exciting for the users to draw their attention towards the app because an android device is placed on the side but that can barely be noticed by anyone as it is such a small device around a hundred people.
These products will be delivered to those who fill in the form because we don’t want others to wait around till right at the end to pick their favourite products up. I personally feel that the group spending a little would help us get more users involved which will help us in the future while developing this application.
The device is placed on a stand with a little Alfred with a speech bubble saying, ‘Try out the app’ to encourage the people at the showcase to at least try it out. There haven’t really been kids in this generation who would read those sort of speech bubbles and walk off especially when it comes to modern technologies. We thought of having interfaces printed out and stuck up on the wall but we didn’t see the point as those interfaces are shown and demonstrated in the video anyway.
We have a banner on the left side with the apps name, it’s slogan and a speech bubble on the side for others to read from a distant and draw their attention towards our area. The bubble introduces the app with a short description of what it provides. All these ideas are presented for the attention as a promotion not just for the show case but because we want to develop this project to solve the individual’s life struggle, especially the students living alone and struggling to provide themselves with healthy meals.
As part of promoting the app, our business cards are printed, Facebook page is created, individuals have a shirt with the apps name printed with a little Alfred the avocado next to it.
A little pamphlet is created for handouts just in case the group members don’t get a chance to speak to the individuals walking in and out of the area our project is displayed in. This includes what the app is about, its narrative that was verbally stated by each members in the group and a little more in-depth details. The narrative was supposed to be taken into account in the video as well but I couldn’t keep the video too long as people wouldn’t stand around watching the video. They would want to watch a quarter of the video and keep moving onto the other projects that is displayed around them. This was mainly important to all of us as we are all from complete different background with unique experiences.
Having these team members made the project successful as we all think differently about every ideas we have put into this project and this is how everything became complete original even though we could’ve kept some things the same as the other apps but why steal ideas when it can be brought into the group with original concepts and can be played around for further developments. We have spent 12 weeks in total working on this project which was continuously iterated for every single features and contents and is still in the process with the feature which wouldn’t have been implemented in such short time.
Set up for the showcase:
I have played around with every scene in the video and taken the most important parts for the video answering ‘WHAT, WHY, HOW’. These are the main reasons behind this application.
Other information’s are provided in the previous blog posts.

I've always been outside
All through my life I've been an outsider. Some cases people do it unintentionally, sometimes on purpose. My best friend and I have had the same conversation many times because he feels the same way. We ave this sneaking suspicion that we're mentally handicapped but we can't tell and no one has said anything about it simply to be PC. I wasn't very well welcomed by the kids I went to school with. They grew up with Disney channel, lady gaga, and I phones. I grew up with Andy Griffith, the rolling stones, and a qwerty keyboard phone. Through middle school I tried to embrace my weirdness. I tried to make that my personality in hopes that people would love me for it. In highschool I saw it wasn't working and I grew angry. I grew resentful of those who wouldn't accept me. My first job was a dishwasher at Duffys sports grill and I finally felt accepted. The wait staff adored me because I was quirky and they thought it was fun I was "such a hippy". Even after not working there for 3years they greet me with big smiles. Next I joined the Army in November of 2015. I felt welcomed by my battle buddies at reception and through red phase despite my injury and mistakes I made. When they sent us home for Christmas and new years things changed. My injury had gotten worse and when we returned I felt that familiar sting of being an outcast again. My suggestions fell on deaf ears and my presence was treated as a burden and annoyance more than anything. I was different and again I was being shunned for it. Soon, about 2 days into blue phase, I was sent to an rhu due to my injury and failing moral. Rhu was quite the experience. I spent 308 or more hours with 80+ guys. I was welcomed by kind but cautious men. Everyone had a chip on their shoulder and their guard up but they weren't taking it out on anyone. Like any large group of people, it quickly split into factions. The African Americans had their group, the rednecks had theirs. The people getting discharged from AIT hardly mixed with those getting discharged from BCT, and then it split between those who were discharged from reception and those who made it through red phase. I finally felt accepted and by all things it was by fellow "failures". There were those who tested positive for drugs, those who were injured, those who were caught fraternizing, those who couldn't pass the APFT and just a few oddballs who got through meps physical exams but not reception physical exams. We all excepted each other and supported each other how we could. Some of us did a few favors for some extra cash like myself, I gave massages for a dollar. I made about $40 in my time there. Others worked multiple fireguard shifts for some extra cash. Some commissioned artwork. The people who excepted me most were those who also got discharged from my company which comprised of 1 positive drug test from someone who would have made an excellent soldier, 3 failed APFT people, 1 who just flat out quit, 3 who were having suicidal thoughts, and 2 others who were injured. Although it was a shitty time, I kind of miss the people of my RHU. I was ofically discharged in march of 2016. When I came home I took a long motorcycle trip on my 1985 Honda rebel 250. I rode that thing with an 80lb rucksack from Palm Beach, Florida to Dothan, Alabama. It took me 15 hours and cost me about $25 in gas believe it or not. I was visiting my friends up there. The same friend who I have that repetitive conversation with and his girlfriend. He welcomed me with open arms but from her I could feel a certain resentment for some reason. I had assumed it was because she thought I was a joke for having failed to complete basic training. This prepared me for what I thought was going to be a long life of hiding in shame my failures. Even now I can't go a day without thinking about the Army and u really wish I could. I'm not trying to put myself on the same level as combat veterans with PTSD, They've most definitely have it worse than me, but Army BCT had a profound effect on me and I wish I could escape it. from that trip I returned to work at Publix and stayed there until July 15th, 2017. Now I work at an animal hospital and I'm getting ready to start school. I'm going to lose some weight and get back into shape like I was when I was discharged. I'm joining the police academy to be a wildlife officer. My beautiful girlfriend Hailey has been there for me since may 10th 2016. She has been a huge support in everything from buying my Harley and fixing it, to buying my first truck, helping me while my dad has been fighting cancer, to supporting me in my dream of being a wildlife officer. I love her so much and she inspires me every day to keep pushing though the shit till I strike gold. For her and I its only up from here. I know not many people will read this and even fewer will even care but its sure nice to have it all written out and out of my head, even if it only lasts a little while. I hope you've enjoyed my story thus far and will join me for the remainder of it.

Apply the Safeguard Measures on DAP and MAP fertilizer
DAP and MAP is complex inorganic fertilizers, with main component of nitrogen and phosphorus, whose function of lining, dressing crops and production of NPK fertilizer.
On March 31st, 2017, Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) received Dossier requesting to apply the safeguard measures on DAP and MAP fertilizer. Requesting Party is DAP Vinachem Joint Stock Company and DAP No 2 -Vinachem Joint Stock Company.
Anti-dumping-Lawyers-in-VietnamOn April 13th, 2017, Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam (Investigating Body) received Dossier requesting to apply globally the safeguard measures on DAP and MAP fertilizer.
On May 12th, 2017, based on Dossier requesting to apply the safeguard measures of domestic industry, regulations of World Trade Organization (WTO) and Vietnamese Law, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) promulgated Decision No. 1682A/QD-BCT on initiation of investigation to apply globally the safeguard measures on DAP and MAP fertilizer imported into Vietnam.
Based on conclusion from preliminary investigation showing that imported goods caused significant damage to domestic industry, MOIT promulgated Decision No. issued Decision No. 3044/QD-BCT on August 04th, 2017 on applying temporary safeguard measures on goods with HS codes as follows: 3105.10.20; 3105.10.90; 3105.20.00; 3105.30.00; 3105.40.00; 3105.51.00; 3105.59.00; 3105.90.00 with temporary tax of VNĐ1,855,790 per/ton. Temporary safeguard measures shall from August 19, 2017 to March 6, 2018.
In the final investigation phase, Investigating Body held consultations with the relevant parties, assessed socio-economic impacts of temporary safeguard measures, updated data and consulted Ministries, agencies.
The final investigation conclusion showed that the amount of imported DAP and MAP fertilizers had increased both absolutely and relatively during the investigation phase. The conclusion also showed that the imported DAP and MAP fertilizers caused price pressures and price hikes on domestic goods during 2013-16 period. Phenomenon of price pressures, price hikes continues to take place in 2017 so the selling price of domestically produced fertilizer is still lower than the production cost. Domestic fertilizer production industry suffer on all aspects such as significant reduction of quantity and sales.
Accordingly, there was increase of imported goods having impact on prices. One of the three conditions is met to apply the safeguard measures according to regulations of WTO and Vietnammese law (Three conditions are: having impact on quantity and prices of imported goods; domestic industry was significantly damaged; There is causality between the increase of imported goods and the damage of domestic industry).
On November 10th, 2017, Minister of Industry and Trade promulgated Decision No. 4236/QD-BCT on extending the deadline for investigating cases of applying safeguard measures on DAP and MAP fertilizers imported into Vietnam fertilizers for more two months before issuing the final Report. Data Objects 5
Apr 8th 2019 Summary
Today we tried out the Kill the Baby exercise that Charles had initially shown us. We decided to explore other ideas outside of creating clothing as it felt like a constraint on our group’s creativity. As a group, we examined our past ideas and brainstormed on the wall with new ideas that we could further iterate on.
We eventually came up with an idea to make a “stove top” with four elements each representing different temperatures; showcasing the increase of temperature caused by climate change. Though, we decided to abandon that idea, after proposing it to Krishna. The technical requirements for this concept were far too complex for our level, or at least to continuously iterate on.
After scraping that idea, we came back to garments as the focus of our data object again. However, we changed direction on our data set - BMI. We wanted to create a garment that could tighten and loosen based on a data set (BMI). Creating a shirt that changes size could also relate to the effect of a large BMI, e.g. heart attacks and the feeling of tightness in the chest.
Apr 9th and 10th 2019 Summary
Our group's intentions were to create the product, so we bought materials and went to Krishna after measuring and cutting our fabrics. Krishna helped sew the seams of the strip of fabric to the inside of the T-Shirt. We then fed the elastic through the strip of fabric and tried it out with people in BCT to see how they interacted with the object.
Our Findings:
It was tight, uncomfortable to wear, it was restricting and unsettling. We thought we could add padding to it or more elastic parts to the stomach area, etc. I had noticed that the wearers felt uncomfortable by the possibility, and the sight of “boobs” on themselves as the elastic tightened so we hope we can add foam around the chest and stomach.
Sangeeta came by and analysed our concept. She had felt as if it didn’t convey our data set - it overall appeared to be just an uncomfortable piece of clothing. We had a look at our past prototypes and discussed other ideas that weren’t based around clothing. I think at the end of the day we all felt defeated and couldn’t think of anything good enough afterwards.
Reflection
I think at the beginning when we abandoned making garments it showed that making the starting point ‘the everyday object’ can result in more pressure and creative restraints than starting with the ‘materiality of the data’. Additionally, we were told that our idea didn't represent what a data object was, again. I think that we did very well in creating a physical user experience that creates creativity but I can see we can delve further but as well we aren’t presenting something new. I think the idea was disregarded quite a bit and made us feel disheartened and we abandoned the idea altogether. I felt like we weren't encouraged to iterate but rather give up on our idea.

Space, Image and Sound
For this project, Sarah and I will create an interactive installation with the intention of being playful and fun in an attempt to change people's perspective on the world that we live in. The majority of news and current events being published these days consists of negative and sad events. A screenshot from Stuff this morning demonstrates this:
We need to change our perspective otherwise, we will only focus on the negative aspects in the world. While playing is something you do as a child, it is not necessarily childish. In fact, playing is something that allows you to regain the innocence of childhood that so many people desperately seek (Tomasso, 2011). As odd as it sounds, playing can immensely increase your quality of life, especially with so many sad things happening around us. Being playful helps us to relax. It creates positive energy that is uplifting, enhances creativity and helps us to rediscover the magic of life (Healthy Options, 2010).
The installation will be set up in the BCT year 2/3 studio for the end of year exhibition on November 10th 2017. The installation will be an LCD screen which is in a fixed place with a video on loop. There will also be a physical artefact which will need to be worn or used in order to understand the exhibition. This represents that there needs to be conscious decision to change your perspective in order to see the world differently and have a playful outlook on life.
A possible artefact will be a pair of glasses created from the polarising filter off the LCD screen being used. This means that only the person with the glasses on will be able to view the installation, therefore have a playful outlook. An example of a polarising filter being used in glasses:
The video that is being played on the monitor will be examples of ways to look at the world with a positive outlook. We are drawing inspiration for the video from these examples and more:
