Would you trust Runkeeper’s 10k training plan?
HI OK so I'm not familiar with it and I can't peak at it because it's subscription-based (I think?) but when I used the Runkeeper app I liked it! If you have a subscription, I'd say go for it. There's also the Nike Run Club app which iirc has free programs.
You can find many popular running program schedules on CalendarHack. Unfortunately, skimming through that list, the only 10ks on there are the Hansons Couch Potato, which is a complete novice program, and the Pfitz / Faster Road Racing, which is advanced as fuck — but I'm still linking the site in case you / someone else is interested in options for 5ks or HM plans.
Speaking of options: here is the Hal Higdon 10k plan, novice level. It's 8 weeks long.

"cross" means cross training — walking, gym, swimming, stretching etc. depending on your level and needs

Hood to Coast Races
Tumblr media
The Hood to Coast (HTC) race series involves teams of varying sizes taking turns carrying a baton over long distances. These events foster social connections transcending backgrounds and cultures while promoting fitness, community engagement, environmental stewardship, and other causes. Individuals can participate in any of the HTC race series.
The most popular is the Providence Hood & Portland to Coast Relay event, which is also the world's largest running/walking relay race. Attracting participants across the US and 40 nations, the race is considered the “mother of all relays.” This annual Oregon spectacle sees teams of 8-12 runners/walkers traverse a scenic 130-200-mile course from Mt. Hood's summit to the Pacific Coast.
Another common event is the Les Schwab Tires Seabrook Relay, which takes place annually in the coastal town of Seabrook, Washington. Featuring a looped course, teams of 4-6 people participate in either a 60.2 mile run or a 40.4 mile walk relay. The run begins and ends at 203 Front Street in Pacific Beach. The walk starts at 3 Sockeye Road in Humptulips and ends at Merriweather Street. Participating in this event targets fundraising for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the designated charity partner. Teams receive perks such as a St. Jude jacket or t-shirt, complimentary drinks and snacks, and a finish party.
In race events, the Providence Heart to Start is a timed run held at Cook Park in Tigard that offers in-person and virtual participation options. Participants can choose between a 5K or 10K distance on loops through the park. There is also a 200-yard kids free fun run. Registration fees and donations support the Providence Heart Institute's initiative to provide free automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and training to local schools and organizations in Southwest Washington and Oregon.
The HTC series also features The Red, White & Blues and Turkey Trot events. The former is a 5k/10K race that begins and ends in West Linn, Oregon. Like the Heart to Start race, the Red, White & Blues event includes a kids fun run. Adult participants receive a medal at the end of the race, while kids get bibs. The Turkey Trot 5K race is an annual tradition that invites individuals to participate with family and friends. The race takes place in Portland International Raceway at Winter Wonderland and includes kids fun runs. There is a participant medal and a t-shirt for all runners.
Internationally, HTC hosts relays in destinations such as Hainan, China, and Taiwan. These overseas relays allow runners and walkers to not only compete as a team, but embark on an adventure with friends and create memories in unique destinations. Participants must have proper international travel documents and arrange for accommodations in advance. Races vary in length and number of participants.
Several measures ensure participant safety during international events. At dawn and dusk, runners must use flashing lights, and high-visibility clothing is recommended. Runners must also avoid wearing headphones to hear instructions and traffic. However, music played out loud at a reasonable volume is allowed. With no guaranteed water stations, participants carry their own hydration. Moreover, the events require teams to handle medical emergencies on their own, though race radios enable requests for assistance.
Besides the Providence Cancer Institute and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, HTC partners with various organizations for charity, diversity, and inclusivity reasons. Notable partners include The Sunshine Division (to distribute emergency food to families in need), World Vision (to fundraise for those who are in need or oppressed), the American Lung Association (to promote lung health), and the Bald Faced Truth Foundation (to enrich children's lives through experiences and opportunities).

Touch of Icarus
It's now just about four weeks after the marathon. I gave myself a good solid down period afterward, both to recover and to process. The race itself was disappointing, but also unsurprising. I knew I would be OK for 16-17 miles, and that anything afterward would be an adventure. True to form, the first 16 miles went great, I and I slowly came unglued between 17-20, before crashing hard from 21-24.
Race day was warm, and I was grateful for it at the start, but it probably hurt me during the run itself. I sweat a lot, so if it's too hot, I struggle to replenish the fluids and electrolytes. It was still much better than shivering at the start, so I was happy.
The first few miles were uneventful, except for the fact that the 3 hour pace group seemed to blast off up the road a solid 10 sec per mile ahead of schedule. My heart rate was alarmingly high for this early in the race, so I backed off, but I found myself staying right on pace for my goal of 3 hours.
At about 4 miles, my heart rate did not come down substantially, so I had to choose between pressing on or backing waaaay off. I really only did this race to try and give myself a shot at a BQ, so backing off never really seemed like an option. I knew what I could be in for, but decided to go for it anyway.
I know that I am in shape when I can instinctively feel a pace. My best sense is on the track, during intervals, and I can gauge the laps down to the second. On the roads, it's a natural rhythm that lets me feel the pace without knowing the pace. In this case, I felt that the three hour group was way too fast, and I let them get well up the road. Despite this, I came through half way in 1:30:00, on the dot. It was comically precise. I was definitely tired, but I might have a shot at this thing.
I made a quick restroom stop, got back running again quickly, and hit the next mile in 6:53, right back on pace. The stop was prudent, and I tried to ignore that I was starting to tire. The first time I really felt like I was "off pace" wasn't until mile 17 (7:01). It wasn't slow, but my heart rate had started to climb higher and the nine miles to the finish seemed very daunting.
I slowed gradually from 18-21, shuffling across the 14th Street Bridge. When I finally got down into Crystal City, though, that's when the fatigue and cramping really hit. I had overextended and was paying back for the effort. I walked a stoplight, then ran, then doubled over again as my hamstrings seized up. It was no longer about racing, just finishing. I got enough fluids down to shuffle the last two miles, staggering up the hill to the Marine Corps Memorial.
Stepping back, the race was certainly not what I wanted. I hoped to get a BQ and use the race as a springboard to another level of fitness and a return to racing. I knew, though, that the first goal was always going to be extremely ambitious, and that a six week marathon build was only a half or third of what I wanted.
But I am relieved to find that my body (still) responds to structured training, and that I was able to build fitness relatively quickly. The opening half of 1:30 would have been a challenge to me as a solo race in mid-July. I'm satisfied with the process, even if I'm not satisfied with the result, and so I am excited to get back to training in earnest.
I have at least one race next year picked out - the USAT Nationals in Atlantic City. I want to add in a couple of 5Ks, 10Ks, and maybe a few half marathons to keep that rhythm of racing. I would be interested in a spring marathon, but I'm not sure when or where. Kona is peaking over the horizon, but I can't commit the training volume for a full Ironman right now.
It's time for thinking, planning, dreaming, and training. Soon, there will be racing.

Zombies Run Virtual Race Chronology 2020 Update
This is a fan document.  Six to Start’s official stance is that all virtual races take place in or before Season 1.  But, If you’re a 𝓗𝓾𝓰𝓮 𝓝𝓮𝓻𝓭 and want to try to run or rerun the series in order (supported, please do), here is my personal chronology of Seasons 1 and 2, which is based on user o0yono0o’s post from a few years back.  I am condensing the training missions and races for each VR down to one line for sake of brevity.  The two absolutely non canon virtual races are Virtual race 5: Halloween!  run in october with the S2 Halloween missions Virtual race 9: Escape from Runaway Fairground* (see alternate placement below)
Pre-Season One: Virtual race 8: Train to Oban Virtual race 4: European Rescue Force Virtual race 2: Nuclear Threat (specifically, the community seems to agree the race for VR 8 takes place on almost the same day as VR4 training mission 2 and VR2 training mission 1, if you wanted to be an 𝓔𝓿𝓮𝓷 𝓑𝓲𝓰𝓰𝓮𝓻 𝓝𝓮𝓻𝓭). The supply missions are noted as when they were initially unlocked in early versions of the app.  • S1M1 (Season 1, Mission 1): Jolly Alpha Five Niner ZR5k Trainer weeks 1-8
Season One: • S1M2: Distraction • SUPPLY: Decoy Duty • S1M3: Lay of the Land • SUPPLY: Ammo Run • S1M4: A Lost Child • SUPPLY: Fuel Run • S1M5: Paul Revere • S1M6: Supply Run • S1M7: A Voice in the Dark • S1M8: The Old Mill • SUPPLY: Medicine Run • SUPPLY: Food Supply Run • S1M9: Recovery • Virtual race 10: The Abel Manor Murders*  (alternate placement below) • SUPPLY: Tech Supply Run • Virtual race 7: Tomorrow Island* (see alternate placement below) • S1M10: Tess • S1M11: Back to School • S1M12: Alternates • S1M13: A Regular Meds Run • S1M14: Patient 29 • RACE: ABEL 5K: Ultra-Violet • RACE: ABEL 10K: Visiting Van Ark • RACE: ABEL 20K: Jeffro Complex • RACE: CANTON 5K: Big Cheese • RACE: CANTON 10K: Etymology • RACE: CANTON 20K: Plasmapheresis (specifically, CR5k takes place same day as S1M14, and both 20K races take place on the same day, but the Abel races should be run first) • S1M15: Virtuous Circle • SUPPLY: Entertainment Run • Virtual Race 3: The Xia Hifa Heist • S1M16: Scouting Mission • S1M17: Information Exchange • Virtual race 1: Race for Abel • S1M18: Eavesdropping • Virtual race 6: Tactical Zombie Division*  (see alternate placement below) • S1M19: An Unimportant Mission • S1M20: Listen In • S1M21: Siege • S1M22: Horde • S1M23: Aftermath • S1RM.
   Interval Training should be played during S1 after M3 and before M20. Season Two: • S2M1: Back Once Again • S2M2: From the Ashes • Airdrop #1 • S2M3: Walking On Broken Glass • S2M4: We Used To Be Friends • Airdrop #2 • S2M5: Ghosts • S2M6: Let The Dogs Come out • S2M7: Mummy’s Hand • S2M8: Chicken Payback • Airdrop #3 • S2M9: All Together Now • S2S1 (Season 2, Side mission 1): Canada • S2M10: Holding Out For A Hero • S2S2: Headcount • S2M11: The Kids Are Alright • S2M12: Relight My Fire • Airdrop #4 • S2S3: Whack-A-Mole • S2S4: Times New Roaming • Airdrop #5 • S2M13: SOS • S2M14: You’re Rocking The Boat • S2M15: Hounds of Love • S2S5: Top 40 • S2S6: Trefoil • Airdrop #6 • S2M16: Electric Dreams • S2M17: The Object Is A Hungry Wolf • S2M18: Dark and Long • S2M19: Dare • S2M20: Toxic • S2S7: War Is The Answer • S2M21: Always Take The Weather • S2S8: Interview With a Girl Guide • S2M22: No Future • S2M23: Galvanize • S2M24: London Calling • S2S9: Zombies, Row! • S2M25: Con Te Partiro • S2M26: S-Express • S2M27: Banditos • S2S10: Zombies, Climb! • S2S11: Zombies, Stretch! • S2S12: Search And Rescue • S2S13: Actual Cannibal Rescue Mission • S2M28: Ghost Town • S2M29: The Lion Sleeps Tonight • S2M30: Panic • S2S14: Circuit Training • S2S15: Quartermaster • S2S16: Zombies, Bike! • S2M31: Hello • S2M32: Tightrope • S2M33: Athena • S2M34: Ready To Go • S2H1 (Halloween): Living Dead Girl • S2H2: Horse Play • S2H3: Wai Chu Xiao Xin • S2M35: Dog Days Are Over • S2M36: One Way Or Another • S2M37: Sweet Escape • S2M38: Jailbreak • S2M39: Psycho Killer • S2M40: Little Lies • S2M41: You Know My Name • S2M42: Road To Nowhere • S2M43: The Final Countdown • S2M44: Something Good, 08 • S2M45: Going Underground • S2RM Almost all content after Season 2 is properly sequential.
Spoilers up to end of Season 3 for Alternate placement of virtual races 6, 7, 9, 10.
You may have noticed that Season 1 is now more crowded than a special episode of Doctor Who when they bring back a bunch of old Doctors to boost ratings.  Alternate chronology for a few races are below: Virtual race 6: Tactical Zombie division could take place between S2M14 and S2M34 due to the surprise guest star. Virtual Race 7: Tomorrow Island could have been a previous Runner 5 mission (Pre your arrival at Abel) or between S2M7 and S2M13 Virtual Race 9: Escape from Runaway Fairground could take place as a Fever Dream or Magical Journey between S3M43 and S3M49, as there are some parallel themes. Virtual Race 10: The Abel Manor Murders could take place between S2 and S3 (or S3 and S4) as a low stakes (for Janine) problem to solve.

Maria’s first half marathon - The Nebraska Half
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, how was my first half marathon? It was pretty epic.  We had a rain/thunderstorm delay to 7:30 and I was pretty sure the race would be canceled...however it went!  Now it was lightly raining when I started which was fine...but then the MASSIVE thunderstorms rolled through - as in I had to take off my glasses for most of the race because I couldn’t see through them.
Everything started out fine running wise.  Even though my training fell off like a month ago, I still felt good.  My right foot used to go numb when I was training, however it only went numb for a bit, but it didn’t last long.  I’m not sure if that’s because of all the puddles/rain/whatever. My breathing felt fine as well.
When I got to like mile 3ish (I think), we had to under some underpasses...it was dark and the road was shit, and I stepped in a few holes which I think caused me to mess up my knee.  By the time I got mile 5ish there was a large hill that I had to run up...and I was not prepared for how steep it was.  I was so annoyed/angry with the hill and flooding that was going on that as I was running down the hill I was yelling along to Green Day and was saying “fuck that hill” lol.
As I continued on, my knee/hip started to feel good for a while, but I knew it wasn’t to last long.  My spilts started to get worse and worse and by the time I made the loop around the finish area before heading into Iowa, I knew that I probably wasn’t to make the cut off time (3 hours and 30 mins).  I made the decsion to walk the portions in Iowa and then run towards the finish line. HOWEVER by the time I made it across the bridge my knee was like “BITCH I WILL MURDER YOU”...so I hobbled as much as I could lol.
I still manage to complete it before the cut off! I also apparently had new personal records in Garmin - a new 5k and new 10k record.
I did my first half marathon in 3 hours and 20 minutes according to Garmin.
My next half marathon is on November 3rd...and it’s a downhill course which will be nice and it’s got a 4-hour time limit. So I’m hoping that I can do this one in like 3 hours and 15 minutes lol. I plan on slowly reducing my time between now and next year when I do the Omaha Half which has a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.  That race will be in April so I think I can do it...?!

Day 22
Sun 26th Jan 💜
It’s been a year to the day since we lost Nanny. That’s mad isn’t it. Miss that legend.
Woke up at about 5am because we’d gone to bed too early, but managed to power through and stay in bed till 7am. Phil got up and continued researching his new obsession - a half marathon near Kilimanjaro - and I joined him at 8:30am for Spanish omelette breakfast included in our 25$ a night room. Good deal that init. People say that in London you’re never further than like 5 meters away from a rat. Well thats like me and good deals, there’s always one close by for me to sniff out. Maybe I’m more like one of those pigs and the deals are truffles.
I digress...
The hostel manager was now wearing a chefs coat and I realised he was now the chef. What a multi-talented chap he was. I threw him into a frenzy by asking for salt, pepper, ketchup and chilli sauce, and eventually went into the kitchen myself to assist.
The ketchup was in a huge bucket bottle in the fridge and he gracefully glugged it out into a plastic squeezey bottle that he couldn’t find the lid for. Yum.
Shout out to Stella and Helen who will surely boke at that description of keptchup.
We got bodas to the Woman’s Centre for the recommended walking tour starting at 10am - but there was a big bike race on believe it or not, and so road blocks meant we had to walk the last kilometre. Phil was loving the bike race, I could see his legs twitching like he was imagining himself on a bike that moment, but I soon snapped him back to reality by power-walking ahead to avoid us being super late to the walk.
The sky was rapidly turning a dark shade of grey but Phil assured me that the weather report he’d checked stated that there would be no rain until midday or later.
You may be able to sense where this is going.
We arrived at the Centre and sat in the sofa area for the introduction, and the exact moment the woman began to talk and tell us about the community, the rain began to thunder on the metal roof and no one could hear a word she said. After 10 minutes, the intro finished and the rain actually calmed down a little, but then it went totally crazy again and me and Phil looked at each other like...hmm should we just not do this walking tour.
Another English girl there was thinking the same thing and the 3 of us decided to ditch the tour and head back the next day, while the 3 older people and a young American woman went off in the torrential rain with umbrellas. Umbrella’s are all good and well but I couldn’t see another soul on the streets so I seriously doubted how good a community walking tour would be in this weather. We chatted to the English girl, Esther, and she was ending a weeks work doing research for the Princes Trust who she works for. In a nutshell, she creates programmes for local groups in different countries to integrate technology into their lives to improve their prospects and quality of life. Really interesting! Phil mentioned that she should hang at our hostel later if she wanted as we were planning on trying out the bowling alley on site, and she was really up for that, especially considering she was in Kigali on her own and it was her last night.
The rain eventually calmed down enough for us to jump on a boda and we decided that considering the rain, it would be appropriate to visit the Genocide Museum at this point. We knew we were going to visit it at some point so made sense to be inside during the rain.
We were really hungry though and didn’t want to rush through the museum, so thankfully there was a cafe on site where we had a vege burger and vege panini, both with chips. We decided we’d try and lay off the chips for a while after that meal, it was the chip that broke the camels back.
The Rwandan Genocide museum was a harrowing and necessary visit.
The below information is upsetting, I’ll warn you now.
genocide
noun
noun: genocide; plural noun: genocides
1. the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group.
To briefly summarise, the problems began when the country was ‘colonised’ - or should we say if we’re being honest, when the country was invaded against its will. The Germans were first in 1899 then the Belgians in 1916 and then the Belgian’s decided to split the country into three different groups. Ultimately this created a sort of competition between the groups of people that had never existed before and this was what they say sparked the issues in the country. Fast forward to 1994, and the genocide officially began, over a period of 100 days - neighbours were murdering neighbours, friends were murdering friends. Relatives even betrayed each other. By turning people against each other, the ringleaders were able to sit back and watch the killings happen for them.
Being in the country now, its very difficult to imagine it happening, as it feels vibrant, friendly and safe. But the images in the museum leave you under no illusions. People were mindlessly slaughtered, no one was spared - children, pregnant women and men. It was absolutely mind-blowingly horrendous.
The museum talks a lot about how the international community sat back and let it happen, like Rwanda was on another planet that no one cared about. There is obviously a lot of pain from that which was difficult to read about.
But there were also a number of people who put themselves on the line by hiding people in their houses and gardens, saving many lives. Unfortunately, there were not enough of those people and over a million people were killed. They are still uncovering mass graves today.
There were videos playing with interviews from survivors talking about the guilt they feel from being the only member of their family who survived. But incredibly, they spoke about forgiveness and said they would like to forgive the perpetrators if they were willing to ask for forgiveness. They spoke about moving forward with only peace in mind, as this was what would move Rwanda forward in a peaceful way. By seeking revenge, the violence and pain would continue, they said. It’s unbelievable to hear that from someone who watched their innocent young siblings and mother murdered by machete in front of their very eyes. You can’t even imagine what this person has gone through.
One of the most difficult parts of the museum was The Children’s Room. This section had beautiful photos of child victims printed in large portraits displayed around the room, with a small plaque underneath each one with bullet points of information about the child, like:
Name
Age
Favourite Snack
Best Friend

Then the final point for every child was
Cause of death
The descriptions here were detailed and distressing.
Obviously there is a huge amount of detail missing from this account of the genocide and I urge you to have a read about it if you have time and are interested.
We left there after a few hours taking it all in and went to find the Inema Art gallery, as we’d read about it being a really cool artists space that has had a lot of international interest.
It was different to what I expected, as there wasn’t actually a lot of pieces in there - more like a few extremely large pieces, each priced around $5000. So obviously, we bought two and headed off.
Well anyway, some of the artists were there stood near their art in smart clothes and were hoping for a super rich muzungu coming in and buying everything. That was not going to be us, so we thanked them and headed to the cafe for a little coffee.
Not before I asked them if there were any female artists there.
One guy said No, the women in Rwanda seem to stick to the craft-making and THEN he said that even though many are good at art, he thinks they are lacking in passion.
I said Hmm perhaps you means Confidence, not passion.
He was like Oh yeah, maybe that.
Yeah MAYBE THAT mate.
We boda’d back to the hostel and Phil donned up in his gear for a run. Just before heading off, he finally booked himself a spot onto the Kilimanjaro half marathon in Moshi, Tanzania on 1st March. FFS. Better get practicing on my excited supportive girlfriend look then.
Meanwhile I sat in the hostel garden watching videos on how to use Procreate on the iPad. Suddenly realised Phil had been gone AGES and then he rocked up having run like 10 MILES and then said Oh also, I may have tripped over and potentially broken my toe.
He’d taken out his phone to check the map and ended up kicking a bit of metal sticking out of the group, and then he’d fallen over and made a few new cracks on his phone screen (to join the 5 that were already there).
Wicked.
Phil had a quick shower and change while hobbling around on his bad foot (I hear broken toes are brilliant for half marathons), and Esther arrived at the hostel, so we went searching for a restaurant open on a Sunday. After a few fails, we eventually stumbled across a place called Afrika Bite and negotiated the 10k per person meaty Rwandan platter down to 5k each for a vegetarian version for all of us. It was so good! Garlic potatoes, peanut sauce, rice, vegetables, fried banana, salad, plus some ‘fish fingers’ ordered as an extra. Such a welcome relief to eat something local and delicious. Shout out to those who are reading this blog mainly for the food descriptions.
We went back to the hostel to play in East Africa’s 2nd bowling alley (the only other one is in Nairobi!) and Esther made sure she mentioned she had a ‘bad neck’. That would explain her unbelievably bad scoring thats for sure. Ok now to be fair, Phil the physio also advised that she use the heaviest ball available which turned out to be truly awful advise and after a stagnant run of about 2 points in 6 goes, she tried a really light ball - and actually hit some pins! Go Esther.
Can I also mention that this bowling alley had a system where a bloke hidden at the end would organise the pins and reset them for us manually using a kind of lever system. He always managed to move his hands out of the way before the ball struck the pins of course.
Esther headed back to her hotel and we ended up playing basketball on the two hoops game with Desire the manager. Our quick game of ‘How many can you score in 1 minute’ managed to take over our lives for over an hour. My record was 23, Phil’s 24 (he’s taller init) and Desire managed 33 (well, he works there so ya know). Was addictive and super fun and I got the impression Desire will spend the next year working on his pb.

Failure
Figured if I wrote about this I could let it go....
At the beginning of the year I signed up for something called the Buzz Oats Race Series.  Basically they they give out prizes for races run during the year.  If you race 40 miles you get a beanie.  65 miles gets you a shirt.  A 100 miles a jacket.  I set the goal of 100 miles.  If you are going to go, go big.
I did every single race.  Started with the short distances for the first few months then eventually crossed over to the longer (most races have different distances you can do.  A 5k or a 10k.  Sometimes a half marathon.  It varies from race to race).
I entered December at 84 miles. The only race left was the California International Marathon (which I had signed up for at the beginning of the year).  For years I have been trying to break a six hour marathon.  Finished two, both over 6 hours.  Dropped out once.  Didn’t show up, twice.  So when I signed up months ago I decided that IF I finish in under 6 then I would get my third tattoo (I only allow myself a new tattoo when I accomplish a big goal).
So going into Sunday I had two goals.  Finish.  And finish under 6 hours.
All week I had been checking the weather on my phone every three or four minutes.  Rain.  Lots and lots of rain.  And yet when I woke at 5 am it was not raining.  And I could see stars (I went outside and looked up).  My girlfriend/head cheerleader crashed at my place so she could drive me to the shuttle (the race starts at the Folsom Dam and the only way to get to the start is via a shuttle).  Due to the lack of water falling from the sky I opted to just wear my Chewbacca tank top (which I wore on most of my races this year) and my running shorts.  Yeah I may be cold for the 45 minutes I am standing at the start but I will be more comfortable in less once the race begins.
We make it to the shuttle without an issue and I am feeling ok.  I know it is going to hurt a lot but I think I am ready to deal with the pain.  I get on the shuttle and soon arrive at the start area, which is packed. They announce that close to 20,000 people are doing the marathon this year.  20,000 people.  It is amazing just how alone somebody can feel standing in a crowd of 20,000 people.  I am slow.  Very slow, so I line up with the last group (they have different areas at the start depending on your expected finish time.  They don’t have a start area for people that may or not finish.  I looked).
Yesterday my dad posted on my facebook that I should run five minutes than walk a minute to ensure I finish.  Instead I go with what worked at the 9 miler last year.... I walk up the hills and try to run the rest.
Because of the 20,000 other people it takes me awhile to get to the starting line after the gun goes off.   I am guessing ten minutes or so, but no clue.
I feel good at the first mile.  Really good.  Trying to not run too fast (well fast isn’t the right word.  Trying to not push too hard).  By mile two I am still doing good, Have just walked the one hill.  My head is in a good place.  Around mile three there is a guy on the side of the road holding a chicken.  A live chicken.  A few minutes later I pass a guy on the other side of the street who has a goat.  On a leash.
At mile 7.5 I see my mom and my cheerleader on the side of the road (unfortunately my cheerleader is not dressed as a cheerleader).  I am feeling good.  My head is still in a good place.  I am having fun.
Around mile 9 I start to fall apart.  I am still sticking to running all but the up hills but everything is hurting.  My mind is no longer in a good place.  And it just keeps getting worse and worse.
By mile 10 I know I am not going to finish.  Everything is hurting too much.  And I am going really slow.  But I am still sticking to the plan.
When I see my mom and Heather at mile 11.5 I want to tell them I am not going to make it.  But nothing comes out.  I run by them and reach another hill and start walking.... and never run again.
At this point not only am I dropping out of the marathon, I am quitting running AND quitting wrestling.  I never want to see anybody ever again.  I am hating myself for not being in better shape (proof that losing 50 pounds doesn’t mean shit if you don’t also put the work in).  I don’t want to see Heather or my mom again.  I just want to sit down and die.
Just after the 12 mile mark I text Heather and tell her I am done.  I am in too much pain.  We argue (might be the first time).  She tells me she is going to meet me up ahead and we will walk the rest of the race together.  I tell her there is no way I can do it.  I end up sitting on the sidewalk for awhile,  Full of self hate.  Eventually I get up and start limping forward again.  Around 12.5  Heather and my mom find me.  I want to die but Heather convinces me to walk some more and see what happens.  My mom agrees to drive forward another mile or so and wait.  So Heather and I slowly move forward, her still thinking that I can finish..... but as we near the 13.1 mark I can see them tearing down the mile marker and timing pad and loading them in the truck.  I have fallen so far behind that they have put the course away.  With this Heather accepts that I won’t be finishing.  After all even if I found some way to limp through the next half marathon the finish line would not be there when I arrived so I would have failed at both goals anyway.  And my legs were killing me.  So I officially gave up.  On myself.  And my goals.
Now it is Monday.   I went for a short, painful walk.  I did not go to wrestling training because I do not want to face my students or my head trainer (I own a professional wrestling school and am a professional wrestler).  I have not yet made any decisions on my future goals.  But the hate is still real.  And that’s the thing.  IF I set goals I could fail again and hate myself even more....and go through more pain like I did yesterday.  Or I could just not play that game anymore.  My whole life as been about goals.  Maybe I have out grown that. I am 46 after all.  Maybe I am at the point in my life that I just tread water until it is all over.  Or maybe I try again next year.  100 miles of races.  Sub six hour marathon.  Or maybe I come up with something else. Something easier.
I just don’t know anymore....

So! This is quite late but I’ve been crazy busy with school and I knew typing all this out would be A Task. This race was about 10,000 times harder than I thought it would be. I thought that I respected the marathon distance going in but it turned out I absolutely did not. My time was quite a bit slower than I was expecting even though I didn’t have an exact goal in mind and my splits were ridiculously positive (pic 7). I’m honestly not disappointed at all though. The marathon is a mean, tough race but I’m even meaner and tougher and that is absolutely something to celebrate. Full race recap under the cut because it’s almost as long as the marathon itself.
- The day before the marathon was pretty much ideal actually. Did my 3 km shakeout run in the morning, made pancakes, lounged around my house, and picked up my bib. My super old family friend/honorary sister was in town to run the half and my mom was running the 5k, so we all went out for delicious pasta the night before along with my boyfriend and my friend’s mom.
- I slept AWFULLY the night before. I lay awake for ages, then slept in short little bursts that probably added up to like 3 hours overall. My cat also woke me up at 5 by biting my feet and I almost tossed him out the window.
- Woke up for real at 6:15, miraculously not tired and not particularly nervous either. I had a bagel with PB and a cup of coffee, put on a huge pile of throwaway clothes over my race outfit, and took an Uber to the start
- I was paranoid about road closures so I gave myself a ton of extra time, but we ended up not having any trouble at all. That meant I got to the start just over an hour early, which was a big problem considering the temperature was a degree or so above freezing
- I waited for my friend to show up, walking around in aimless circles to keep warm. She showed up about 20 minutes early, we took some nice pictures in our 5000 layers, and got into our corrals right around when the gun went off for the elite corral
- This is a FAST race, so my corral was pretty far back and it took about 15 minutes from there to actually cross the line. I was planning on throwing away my fleece, hat, and two pairs of mittens at the start but I ended up keeping them on. I got rid of the mittens and fleece by kilometre 4 and kept the hat until around kilometre 24
- By the time I started, my feet were completely frozen. I spent the first few kilometres wiggling my toes trying to get the feeling back, but I was basically running on ice blocks until the 5k mark
- Other than that though, I felt awesome for the beginning of the race. The energy of the crowd and the other racers were infectious. I was checking my watch every kilometre, and my splits were a bit faster than planned but I didn’t worry too much about reigning it in. I’d been having a bunch of random pains all down my right side all through taper, but I wasn’t feeling anything
- I decided not to count down kilometres or even think about the overall distance until 10k, and I actually did a pretty good job of that. I started having a dull pain in my right hip around 8 km, but other than that I was feeling awesome and determined to enjoy the race for as long as I could
- Between 10k and the halfway mark, things gradually got a bit harder, but I generally still felt in control. My breathing was still good and I was sticking to my schedule for taking energy blocks. But my hip was still nagging and my left hip flexor had joined in as well. The pain was super mild, but I was anxious about it getting worse and that started affecting my mental game in general
- The last time I felt genuinely good was probably around 19 km, right before the half-marathoners split off. We went past a huge cheering station where they were blasting Abba and giving high fives. I was so psyched I actually sang along to most of the chorus of Mamma Mia as I ran past
- Once the half-marathoners split off it got quiet fast. Less than one third of the racers were doing the marathon, so suddenly there were a lot fewer runners and barely any spectators. I was starting to feel sick and my hips were still hurting and I was grappling with the idea of running the complete distance I’d already ran again
- This is where it started getting hard. I’d brought headphones to listen to music, but I wanted to put off using them until I absolutely NEEDED a power-up, so I was pretty much alone with my thoughts until I gave in at 28 km. At this point finishing seemed completely unfathomable and I was starting to wonder what the hell I was doing this for
- The race basically just got harder from here. I was feeling sicker and I started putting off my scheduled energy blocks. I was supposed to take a Gu at 24 km, but I couldn’t even imagine putting it in my stomach. I don’t remember when I started worrying about DNFing again, but it was probably around this point. 28ish km to 32 km was probably the hardest part of the race mentally
- When I finally hit the 32 km mark, things turned around a bit. 32 km was the point last year where I slammed headlong into the wall and dropped out because I couldn’t walk in a straight line or carry a train of thought. So when I got here this time, I realized that even though I felt like absolute shit, I was doing 100 times better than last year. This is when I realized that I probably actually was going to finish
- Even though my mental state improved a tiny bit, my physical state was getting worse and worse. Starting at 32 km, I let myself walk the first minute of every kilometre. This 100% saved me mentally because it gave me something to look forward to every kilometre. It also let me stretch my hips out a bit, which definitely helped physically
- Even with the walking breaks, I was in the absolute worst pain of my life for the last 8 km or so. The only thing stopping me from walking the rest of the way was my desire to be finished the fucking marathon as soon as possible. I wasn’t checking my pace anymore, but I was probably down to around 6:30/km not counting the walking breaks
- Every 900ish metre stretch between walking breaks felt impossible and never-ending, and once I was walking, starting up again after 1 minute was the worst kind of mental challenge. The last few kilometres are pretty hazy in my memory, but I distinctly remember thinking “am I actually going to DNF with less than 2 km to go? IDK. Maybe”
- Finally, finally, I hit 41 km and took my last walking break. That was when I remembered that the total distance was 42.2 km, not just 42. It sounds ridiculous, but the thought of that extra 200 metres was almost more than I could bear as I finished my last walking break
- Every step of that last 1(.2) kilometre was a fight. I was checking my watch every half block and counting down the individual metres. With 600ish metres to go, I saw my mom cheering on the sidelines and almost broke down. She started trying to run with me down the sidewalk, but I discovered later that I’d somehow averaged 4:59/km for the last 800 metres of the race, so she couldn’t keep up with me
- I started seeing signs counting down the last 400 metres and finally accepted that I was definitely going to finish. I took out my headphones to hear the crowd for the last moments, and heard the announcer call my name as I came up on the finish line
- Stepping across the line was the most overwhelming moment of my life. I’d felt so awful for so long, but I’d fought through it. The fact that I DNFed last year and left feeling like such a failure made it even more powerful. As soon as I crossed the line I started full-on weeping, hand over my mouth, sobbing at full volume. Some of it was pain, but most of it was pride and astonishment
- My friend and her mom started calling my name and I walked over to them. Opened my mouth to say hi to them and instead threw up twice directly at their feet, so I guess I can really have no doubt in my mind that I gave the race everything I had
Anyway, this is by far the longest tumblr post I’ve ever written and I’m sure no one’s still reading, so I’ll wrap it up. Four days later, I’m still walking on air over this. My right knee and hip still hurt like a bitch, but I’m happy, and proud, and I ran a FREAKING MARATHON

Y’all, we have been on tenterhooks waiting to meet with Adam’s surgeon to make sure he could travel for thanksgiving, and after our consult yesterday, we got the all-clear to go visit my family for Thanksgiving! We had purchased tickets already knowing we might have to try to finagle our way out of it somehow, but the dr was like uh yeah you can travel why couldn’t you travel?? and it took all my willpower to not shout IMMINENT OPEN HEART SURGERY, but I guess that if you don’t have heart disease you can do whatever you want as long as you feel ok and don’t tax your heart too much. fun!
ANYWAY
we are going to Atlanta and...
at 21 weeks pregnant...
I’m going to run in a Thanksgiving Road Race!
My dad runs this race every year (he does a half), and I have done the 10k several times, and while I’ve run exactly twice in the past 3 months, I figure I haven’t lost so much fitness that I can’t run/walk a 5k! So I’m gonna do it! I’m super excited. My stepmom and sister are going to do the 5k with me, and it’s just such a gorgeous course at the very edge of the GA mountains, near lake lanier. I am so excited!
Plus we’ll celebrate the baby’s 3rd birthday, probably take a trip to the aquarium, see my grandma, and read many, many books. I might even have a glass of wine! I can’t wait :)

Hi.
I'm Kelley, the owner of Hippie Chick Running Company.  Check out the store at http://www.hippiechickrunningco.com.  Nice to meet you!
A little bit about me and my running journey?
Well, I was an athlete in a variety of sports from junior high through college, but I never considered myself to be a runner until later in my adult life.  In fact, I hated running as a child.
I joined the track team in high school to help a friend spend time with a boy she liked (they eventually married, so in the name of love, it was worth it!).  My condition to join the track team: throw discus and shot put.  At one point, the coaches asked me to fill in the roster for the hurdles because of my height.  I was OK in the 100 meter hurdles but in the 300 meter hurdles--HA!  I was dead last. Every. Time.  Beat by at least 100 meters.  OUCH!
I found that I actually could throw discus well.  Not awesome enough to be recruited by college teams, but decent enough to walk on to my college's track team.  I felt so powerful and graceful when I threw a disc.  The college track team became my second family.  Worst part of practice: running.  With the runners.  Luckily, I survived.
I started a full time job after college graduation and like most people, couldn't "find" the time to workout.  Typical effect: gained weight.  Ugh.
At some point, I decided to get a handle on my health and my well being overall.  I joined a gym, tracked my food, listened to hypnosis CDs, lit scented candles...all the fun stuff!  At the gym, I still could not make myself run.  I found comfort in yoga sessions and boot camp workouts.  I felt strong again and the weight I had piled on since college melted off.
And, once I had a handle on my health, I got pregnant.  I slowly discovered how I could treat myself to snacks that I had religiously avoided for the prior few years without gaining weight.  Being a baby incubator worked well for my body.  Until it didn't.
I enjoyed weigh ins through the first half of my pregnancy.  At the mid point, out of the blue, my body was disobeying me and my weight skyrocketed.  By the end, I gained 60 pounds.  "It's OK," I consoled myself while eating a bagel slathered with an inch of cream cheese.
I breastfed my beautiful baby girl for six months.  I promised myself that as soon as she weaned, I'd start working out and track my food intake.
Truth be told, I did miss my yoga sessions.  So, I joined a new gym but just could not get into the groove with yoga like I did pre-pregnancy.  I was constantly worried about the baby.  And work.  And family.  And friends.
I quit the gym, and decided that I would try running.  All I needed was a good pair of shoes.  We have lots of trails and running paths near my home.  I started a C25K program.  It ramped up too fast.  I was discouraged.  I tried a different C25K program.  Better than the first program, but I was still out of shape.  I decided to create my own C25K program based on several published programs with the biggest difference being that I repeated the same week once before increasing to the next step.  It took me twice as long but once I tested myself and ran a full mile without stopping, I found the confident me again.
Feet don't fail me now!
I (sort of) went overboard and signed up for a half marathon.  What was I thinking?  Seriously!  I was able to run a full mile...13.1 would be harder but do-able.
I approached race day with excitement.  All of the training paid off until halfway through I was booted off the course for my sssslllloooowww pace.  I was ahead of the race's minimum pace but because I was in the tail end of the runners, the race officials decided to open the streets on the course early.
My stubbornness refused to allow me to quit mid-race.  I scooted to the side of the road and thanked EVERYONE at the water stations who remained at their stations.  I was so grateful to see the finish line.  I walked to the car afterward and burst into tears as soon as I sat inside from the pride, sense of accomplishment...and the shame of being booted off the course for being slow.
Shortly after the half, I found out I was expecting my second bundle of joy.  Running needed to be put on the back burner through that pregnancy.  I was nauseous the entire 9 months and could barely keep my eyes open through the day.  Luckily (surprisingly!), I didn't pack on more weight with my second pregnancy.  But, I felt like a huge bump on a log.
I resumed running about six months after my second kid was born.  I ran a few 5Ks and was thoroughly enjoying running (although not losing weight because I was so ravenous after each run).  To keep my running momentum going through the winter, I joined a gym that had an indoor track in addition to treadmills.  On bad weather days, I alternated between the indoor track and treadmills using the treadmill days to catch up on my TV shows (how did we survive before Netflix and Hulu?????).  Good weather days, I enjoyed the local running paths.
Out of the blue, plantar fasciitis crept up on me in both feet one fall morning.  After trying gadget after gadget, different stretches, compression socks, shoe inserts, and ortho slippers, I think I finally have the PF under control.
Which leaves me where I am today.  My re-birth.  More like my re-re-re-birth into running.  This is a huge crossroads in my life with my other things also changing in my both my personal life and career.  I am mentally preparing for the changes I must accept in my eating habits in addition to my running.  My primary goal is to be healthy and fit.  The icing on the cake (yes, I did just go there!), is losing weight.
I'm so excited about running that as I started researching training plans, clothing and gear, I decided that I wanted to harness my passion about running into this blog.  It's my place to hold myself accountable.  Having a store attached to my blog is a bonus where I can showcase my special finds and creative designs as I move along in my adventure.
I'm thrilled to be able to create a supportive and encouraging space to connect with other runners from all walks of life at all stages of their running careers: the first wave runners as well as the ones who join me in the back of the pack; the Galloway Girls, the trail runners, and ultramarathon runners.
Leave a comment below and tell me about your story!  Where are you from?  Trail runner?  Road runner?  Treadmill?  5Ks? 10Ks? Halfs? Fulls? Ultras?  How did you start running?  What motivates you to continue running?
