I watched A Bridge Too Far last night. Besides the cruelty of the war, I also found there were surprisingly lots of comedic moments in the movie (the infamous “surrender ” scene and more) ? Tell me I’m not the only one.

Now is the Time to Start Masking Again
If you stopped paying attention to COVID with the release of vaccines, you've missed a lot.
COVID is airborne.
Long COVID impacts 10% of people infected by COVID (though this is beginning to look like a low estimate). Risk of Long COVID goes up with each reinfection. Long COVID is worse than initially reported.
Bisexual and trans people are more likely to develop Long COVID.
Black and Hispanic folks are more likely than White folks experience more symptoms and health problems from Long COVID.
***COVID and Long COVID has much more in common with HIV and AIDS than the flu (28:19 - 38:30 of linked video)***
The Basics

"This is great and all but it's overwhelming. TL;DR?"
COVID is airborne. Long COVID is much more common (and serious/debilitating) than previously thought.
Mask with an N95 or better in all indoor spaces and outside when close to others. Improve your indoor air quality by opening windows and using fans/air filters.
Rapid tests are prone to false negatives so make sure to retest in 48 hours after exposure and/or when you develop symptoms. Isolate in the meantime. Consider upgrading to a NAAT (PlusLife, Metrix) or PCR (Lucira) if you have the money.
Things for you to do today:
buy some N95s or request some from a local mask bloc
open a window more often and/or buy an air purifier
buy the best COVID tests you can afford

Smoke Divination 101
Hello friends! This post is all about smoke divination!! There are a lot of forms of smoke divination ranging from scrying to reading the shapes in smoke! Today im going to go through a couple and provide links to information about smoke in general! First of all, What is smoke? I recognize this question seems like a no-brainer but bare with me! Smoke is the production of gasses and airborn particulate like ash from an incomplete combustion! Smoke historically has heavy associations with cleansing because of its ability to cover smells which were believed to carry disease!
Smoke divination came about mainly to see the health of a home when cultures began reading it in various different ways and explore other traditions! For example: In ancient egypt its said that if you wear kohl under your eyes and light specific incense you might be able to see the gods helping you beyond the smoke! With all that said there are 3 major forms of divination via smoke and we will go through all 3 of them here!
Libanomancy
Libanomancy is observing how smoke moves around onto someone or something, and watching its motions with a chart/guide in mind! This method is specific because you are not reading shapes and symbols instead you are following the motions and flow of the smoke itself. With all that said this method actually stems from Babylonia! Below here is the original cuneiform chart with translation (source listed below)
(Source here)
Keep in mind, incense was sprinkled on charcoal tablets during this time to take that into consideration as you read!
If when you sprinkle the incense its flame burns with lot of smoke, your army will defeat an enemy.
If when you sprinkle the incense it stops short, and afterwards its flame burns with a lot of smoke, an enemy will defeat your army.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke goes to its right and not to its left, you will prevail over your adversaries.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke goes to its left and not to its right, your adversary will prevail over you.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke goes to the east and does not go towards the crotch of the diviner: downfall for your adversary.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke goes towards the crotch of the diviner and does not go to the east, your adversary will prevail over you.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke goes equally in all directions: equal weapons.
If when you sprinkle the incense smoke clusters: success: the man will enjoy profit wherever he goes.
If the top of the incense smoke is fragmented, there will be financial loss and loss of cattle in the man’s estate.
A) If the top of the incense smoke is cleft (split in two): madness. B) If the top of the incense smoke is cut off, the man will experience hard times.
If the top of the incense smoke looks like the brick basket of Šamaš, there will be di’u disease in the man’s household.
If the top of the incense smoke gathers like a date palm and is thin/down at its base, hardship will seize the man.
If the incense smoke after a while is constricted, hard times will befall the man.
If the incense smoke after a while pushes through and gets out, the man will pull through hard times.
If the incense smoke pushes through to the east and gets out, the man will pull through hard times.
Now this might be the original, but you can adapt all of these into modern connotations! Plus you can add your own definitions like if it creates a circle, 2 smoke trails, and more! Use this chart to your own abilities
Capnomancy
This is divination via smoke shapes! As the smoke creates a shape you can read it and write it down! Because smoke is versatile and likes to move around then shapes are very clear! You would read where the shape is coming from in the smoke plume, how it looks, and why
First set up the space, make sure you have fire safe bowls, dishes, etc and begin to formulate your question
next ask the question, either directly to the smoke or keep it in your mind
after you have a few things you need to focus on
How is the smoke moving
what herbs did you use
patterns, shapes, curls
any shapes that resembles objects or people
As this goes on, write them down, you can focus on interpretation later but make sure to transcribe all of this. After you are finished you can check things out
Some basic rules of thumb include
If the smoke goes straight up thats a definitive yes because of lack of resistance
Animal or humanoid shapes can be read like symbols from dream work or tarot, take note of all shapes and look up their symbolistic counterparts
if the smoke moves slowly up or splits its a hard no
if the smoke stays low to the ground you need to re-evaluate your path
cracking and hissing sounds indicate an important message coming next
smoke can carry memories in the scent, let your intuition pick up on it
times can be important, keep note of the time as you transcribe messages
Smoke Scrying
Smoke scrying is the process of seeing past the smoke, unfocusing your eye's, and using it kind of like a crystal ball! You are not reading anything about the smoke but instead using it as a fixation point and seeing images within the smoke.
First, set up a dimly lit space with a very very low light source like a candle near it or moon light. After light your incense and think about your question. After get comfortable in a chair or bed and face the smoke, do not sit close by, you will accidentally suffocate. After really sit and focus, sit back and count from 50, truly keep focusing on your smoke. When your relaxed start trying to unfocus your eye's and let them drift down the smoke. Its fine wherever they land, just sit with it. After you should start to see shapes, colors, and other messages appear in the smoke! some people report seeing the faces of their spirit team, new colors and shapes, and so much more. Smoke scrying is a unique art and it can take a little bit of getting used to but thats basically the gist of this!

I hope you all enjoyed this post!! I will see you all in the next one :)

I would love any advice you have for protecting yourself against covid in a work environment where no one else cares, because I’m in the same boat.
That really, really sucks, friend. As I said, I don't have all the answers, but here's what I've learned over the last few years and what's worked for me and my inner circle so far. Note that much of this advice will be US-centric because that's what I know best.
First, some light reading: This Covid Safety 101 flyer/infographic includes a ton of helpful info, and I've had some success using it as a conversation starter in my workplace. TL;DR: COVID is airborne, it's a SARS virus, its effects can be devastating, and your risk of Long COVID increases with each infection. We should all be taking steps to contract COVID as few times as possible and spread it as little as possible, with or without the support we should be getting from our public health institutions.
As for practical suggestions, many of them unfortunately cost a non-inconsequential amount of money because we live in a capitalist hellscape, but here are some things you can try, roughly ordered from least to most expensive.
Awareness: COVID is airborne!
A lot of folks, including people in the medical field (!!!) seem hesitant to believe/accept that COVID is airborne, even though this has been understood by researchers since fairly early on in the pandemic. Since most lingering "infection prevention" protocols focus on things like handwashing, disinfecting surfaces, and keeping a six foot distance from other people (all good for public health, but not particularly helpful for COVID), you'll need to gauge your own safety and comfort when around others.
As a general rule, if you're close enough to someone that you could smell their vape or cigarette smoke if they were engaging in such an activity, you're probably close enough catch COVID from them. Also, like smoke, COVID can linger in the air for a while after someone leaves a room. Adjust your habits accordingly and keep your mask on as much as possible (see below).
CPC Mouthwash and Nasal Sprays
I haven't had time to do a ton of research on these options, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt, but it sounds like there's some research coming out that suggests certain nasal sprays and mouthwashes containing CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) may help neutralize viruses or block them from entering your body (or, at the very least, they may help reduce your viral load). I've been using Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse mouthwash before and after interacting with people for the last few months; I don't know how much of a role it's played in keeping me safe, but it might be helping, and even if it's not, it was cheap and my breath is always minty fresh. Here's some more info about nasal sprays, since I don't know enough about them to make any specific recommendations.
Testing
Keep a few rapid antigen tests on hand, if you can, but know their limits as a diagnostic or preventive measure, especially as new variants continue to evolve. My current understanding is that many new variants won't show up on a home test until day 3-4 of symptoms. What this means for you is:
Testing when you're completely asymptomatic and don't have any known recent exposures is probably not the best use of your resources.
If you have any unusual symptoms that might indicate illness, stay home (or wear a high quality mask, if you must interact with others). A negative test doesn't necessarily mean you're in the clear, and if you're sick, you can transmit COVID for several days before you test positive.
Swabbing your mouth and throat in addition to your nose (in that order, obviously) may increase the sensitivity of home tests.
Any sign of a positive test line counts as a positive! If the test line is very, very faint, that still counts.
If you feel sick, but your first test comes back negative, try again in a few days and keep testing periodically until you feel better and are no longer testing positive.
Vaccines
They're not perfect, and they won't get us out of this mess on their own, but if you have access to vaccines, get them. Any vaccine is better than no vaccine, but FWIW, I personally opted to get Novavax this year, after learning that it was the jab of choice for many COVID safety advocates and researchers. Pros of Novavax, specifically, include lower risk of side effects, possibly more durable immunity, and it's not an mRNA vaccine (great option for the vaccine skeptics in your life). But in the end, get whatever you can get.
Masks
If you're not already wearing an N95 respirator or similar, such as KN95, FFP2, KF94, etc., anytime you're indoors (or outdoors in a crowd), now's the time to start. One-way masking isn't perfect, but it's a lot more effective than no-way masking. As someone with a fairly petite face, I've had a hell of a time finding N95 masks that fit me. Through my many expensive mistakes, I have learned:
Avoid buying masks on Amazon, if at all possible. There are a lot of fakes out there.
If most masks fit you comfortably and you're comfortable wearing masks with headstraps (which tend to have a better seal than earloop masks), the 3M Aura is fantastic.
WellBefore sells masks in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors for affordable-ish prices. If you have a more petite face and have found that blue surgical masks and most N95s are huge on you, try their small or child sized masks.
BreatheTeq makes great masks in 4 sizes, and they sell a sample sizing kit for $7 + shipping to help you avoid wasting money.
Masks with headstraps generally form a better seal than masks with ear loops, but the most effective mask is one that you can/will actually wear semi-comfortably. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I've been wearing earloop masks for 3.5 years and have made it through multiple known exposures unscathed.
If you can afford to keep a few extra masks on hand to offer to colleages who have to be in your space, people who are coughing in public, or people who seem to be trying but they're still wearing inadequate surgical or cloth masks, do so. More often than not, people will take and wear them when offered!
Air Filtration
If we lived in a society that believed in public health and safety over profits, we'd have spent the last 3 years improving air filtration in public spaces. Alas, most places did not do this, so your next best options are as follows:
Open windows and prop doors whenever you can! Your goal is to keep fresh air moving through your space and minimize the amount of air that will be "re-breathed" by multiple people.
Build a Corsi-Rosenthal box with furnace filters and a box fan. Pros: Fairly cheap and easy to do; Cons: Boxes are large and can be loud. Some sites also provide instructions and/or sell kits to make smaller, more portable C-R boxes out of desktop computer fans.
Buy a HEPA air purifier (or 2, or 3), or try to get your workplace to shell out for one. While many brands sell small, portable purifiers that are around the size of a lunchbox, I would personally recommend that you buy the largest one you can afford. The smaller ones are probably better than nothing, but you really want a more room-scale solution, if possible. I've had good experiences with Medify Air and Coway air purifiers, but I'm sure there are other great brands out there as well.
If you buy an air purifier, you want one with a HEPA filter and without an ionizer, as ionizers aren't as helpful as the advertising would lead you to believe and they can pose health risks (ozone exposure, etc.).
Measuring Air Quality
If you can afford it, buy an Aranet 4 CO2 monitor. Yes, they're expensive, but I haven't heard of any cheaper products that compare in terms of accuracy or portability. (And they do occasionally go on sale on Amazon.) The Aranet 4 measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air around you. This reading is a great proxy for how much COVID might be in the air, and it can help you identify which areas of your home or workplace are the safest, and which ones would benefit the most from fresh air, an air purifier, or other safety measures.
#covid safety#covid#long post#god I hope I do not regret tagging this#I'm also probably forgetting important stuff but I know if I don't answer this tonight I won't get to it for 2 weeks#asks#anon

Why would anyone keep Speirs and his sergeant apart? That would be crime against humanity and that's Sparky's job.
Hope you are writing something your dying fans are going to read...?(hums ''Cause touching you was a sin, I'm a victim of my own desire")
Trying to find Grant's history has left me with a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 'guess we'll just make him fanon'. because, despite Christenson's 'easy going but all man' comment on him, I really have nothing about this guy. He is 'guy who got shot in the head' despite being at the reunions? ANd becomig the 506 representative in the 101 Airborne association.
He's born in Pittsburg (his mom lived to be 102!?!) , only child, but they're all buried in L.A.----Grant in the same cemetery as Nix. (But Forest Lawn seems to be where all of California goes), Dad was born in NJ and Mom in PA.
It's said he had a tobacco shop in San Francisco but from what I can tell it predates him, the shop goes all the way back to 1849, and it was owned by a Edward Grant who doesn't appear to be a relative? He's born on the other side of PA in Easton with English Immigrant parents.
So, I'm a little skeptical about the information about the Tobacco Shop because nobody can say shit about this guy except - all man, shot, and had a tobacco shop. And these E company guys are known for just coming up with a rumor. I haven't done a deep dive to find him in records though, maybe there is another Tobacco Shop in San Francisco and Grant's is just a coincidence?
Just like Talbert is floating around California and smoked a pipe, Nix happens to have a plot in that same cemetery and Sparky lands in California after retirement.
We need no more to go on for fanfic, many guys lending a 'helping hand'. ;)
I'm trying to get refocused on finishing Life, I think it's my only remaining BoB WIP. I dug up some info that I've been marinating on because I don't know how to handle it but I think I figured it out. Not that anyone cares about 1920s Central NJ happenings but if I don't get this sentence in the AU fanfic right I'll die.
I could probably toss out one of those writing memes for prompts? if I can find one as if my whole blog isn't just prompts i never do Do some quickies?

A lot of my collecting of WWII stuff was inspired by Medal of Honor: Frontline. I was playing it one day the summer I had my first job and I wondered while playing how hard it would be to find a helmet from WWII.
After acquiring said helmet, I set about putting together the uniform of this little knockoff G.I. Joe I had bought when I was a freshman in High School, dubbed "pocket Jimmy Patterson"
Pocket Jimmy Patterson there is a Sergeant in the 101st and was sold as a D-Day soldier but he's actually dressed for Market Garden.
I landed on paratroopers in part because of pocket Jimmy Patterson, and in part because I like airplanes. From there, I went with the 101st over the 82nd because I already thought they had the best patch, I liked the playing card insignia painted on the side of the helmet, the number 101 is aesthetically pleasing, and I didn't know about any other airborne units.
I mean,
Come on.
(the 101st is the one on the left, and the 82nd on the right, if you didn't already know)
I say all that because if you know anything about WWII collecting and especially re-enacting you know that elite units are dramatically over-represented and for the U.S. nobody more than the 101st, and this can be blamed almost exclusively on Band of Brothers, a show I had not even seen when I landed on the 101st.
How bad is it?
Well, by way of illustration, as a stress response to the final stages of my dissertation I've been retreating into buying WWII paratrooper stuff again, and I was questioning whether I hadn't better go with another unit this time. I had a great great uncle killed in the Philippines in WWII who was in the 11th Airborne so that's an obvious candidate, but of course if you want to stick to Europe and fighting Nazis your options are the 82nd, 101st, or 17th. Of those, the 17th only really got into the war in 1945 and if you want to do Normandy, as some 90% of re-enactments do, then you're between the 82nd and the 101st.
The 82nd has a much longer history than the 101st and, objectively, and I mean this with all implied asterisks and am speaking as though I were a twelve year old who does not know better, the 82nd is cooler, the inferior number/patch notwithstanding.
So I was on a website that is well-regarded for selling WWII militaria and they have a section for patches and I was doing some comparison of original WWII-era divisional patches. The cheapest 101st Airborne patch from WWII this guy has for sale is $175, most of them hovering closer to $300, and some in the $600 range.
11th, 17th, and 82nd patches are in the $50 range.
When I still did re-enacting as the 101st, I remember talking to some of the guys who were disappointed with the rather low "authenticity" standards of our unit (always something of a joke when a considerable number of G.I. re-enactors are in their 40s-60s and dramatically overweight), especially considering that the 101st Airborne are one of the most cartoonishly over-documented units in WWII, for whom reproductions of everything are widely available, and so there's really no excuse not to have your uniform and equipment more or less 100% correct.
Sure enough, trying to do a little research into the 82nd to see what that pool would be like, the resources are shockingly slim. The 101st had two combat jumps in WWII, Normandy and Holland. The 82nd jumped into Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, southern France, and Holland. They have a much longer combat record and are, comparatively speaking, almost totally neglected by idiots like me who are into WWII.
Even as I say all this
I am having a hard time severing the internal connection to 101
#wwii#ww2#re-enacting#my militaria#you know#I never actually pieced together the full Pocket Jimmy Patterson uniform#I never got that M8 scabbard#never got the wire cutters#never got a Thompson#and I never got that shoulder bag#the rest of the stuff I did acquire#at this moment the only stuff on him that I have is the 1911 the helmet the scarf the belt the flag brassard the 1911 mag pouch and#ironically perhaps#that M8 scabbard#I think if I focused on the 82nd I'd try to do the 505th because there's a picture of a guy from the 505th with an M1903A4 before Italy#also they had a rampant lion (panther?) painted on the side of the helmet for Italy#not for Normandy I don't think#the 509 are also cool but they're an independent regiment

COVID SAFETY 101 (2023)
Covid (SARS-Cov-2) is short for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus is airborne and neuroinvasive. It causes vascular disease and dysregulates immune systems. The pandemic is not over, the virus never became milder, and the government has continually lied about the threat. Because the virus is being allowed to spread freely, more dangerous variants are constantly emerging. We are all in serious danger.
COVID IS A BSL3 PATHOGEN
Biosafety level three pathogens are those that cause serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation. Other BSL3 pathogens include yellow fever, West Nile virus, and tuberculosis. When Covid is handled in a lab setting, this is what people wear (left). Covid has always been classified as BSL3. Omicron is not mild.
COVID IS AIRBORNE
Covid is airborne. Staying six feet apart does not keep you safe. Social distancing was never enough to prevent transmission. Masks work, when worn properly. Washing hands and getting vaccinated do not stop Covid infections, because the virus is in the air and can linger in the air for hours.

1944 01 Maximum Effort - Philip West
Maximum Effort – Based at Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire from June 1943, 101 Squadron was selected to test new equipment designed to jam the VHF frequencies used by German fighter controllers. A system, code-named “Airborne Cigar” or ABC for short, was operated by an eighth crew member – the Special Operator on board the Lancaster bomber who could understand German and listen into the German controller’s transmissions, jamming them before they alerted their night fighters to the position of the bombers. ABC soon proved its worth and from October 1943, 101 Sqn. ABC aircraft flew with all Bomber Command main force attacks, consequently 101 Squadron suffered higher losses than other 1 Group Squadrons. In an attempt to reduce the losses the Squadron was the first to be fitted with twin 0.5 browning machine guns in the rear turret. Only a handful of airfields were equipped with a fog dispersal system known as F.I.D.O. The fact that Ludford Magna was one of the chosen few is a measure of the importance attached to 101 Squadron.

My name is Mark Blue Fieldad.
What did I learned during Typhoon Paeng?
Helping those in need and interacting with neighbors are two things I learned from Typhoon Paeng. I also discovered that it's important to prepare foods that are simple to eat, like canned goods, when a typhoon is predicted to hit. Typhoon Paeng also taught me to always be ready for disasters in the future. I learned to keep an eye on the news to find out if there is an impending disaster and to get ready for it right away without panicking. Additionally, The President Bongbong marcos personally observed how balding mountains have rendered landslides likely following torrential rains during his airborne assessment of areas ravaged by Paeng. Reforestation and tree planting should be prioritized immediately, he said. And sad to say Severe tropical storm Nalgae (known locally as Paeng) caused more than 2,000,000 people to experience damage when it made initial landfall in Catanduanes, Bicol region, on October 29. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), at least 101 people died (73 confirmed deaths, 28 pending validation), 70 were injured, and 66 are still missing.
