the amount of math i put into figuring out my PTO is honestly so funny. i've probably spent like 2 hours this week and last week just playing with the leave calculator spreadsheet my coworker gave me. this morning i added a sheet for 2026 so now i'm calculating my PTO out that far. i basically already have a plan of how i'm taking time off for 2025 so as to maximize my time off in 2026. i dont think this is a normal level of attention to detail but at least i'm having fun
#(at my job i can accrue a certain amount of PTO that then becomes 'use or lose' because only so much carries over each year)#so by the mythical year 2026 i could in fact end up with 121 hours of use or lose by the end of it#aka i am Forced to take off 15 days (121 hrs) that year or it'll just be wiped#oh dear oh no! however could i manage to take 15 days off! <- DESPERATELY wants to be in this position as soon as possible#my issue is that i keep taking too much time off so i havent hit the maximum cap yet lmao#like if i just chilled out i could reach it next year#but chilling out is not in my vocabulary. i have places to go and people to see#therefore i cannot reach use or lose in 2025 BUT i can reach it in 2026....if i don't end up spending too much of what i accrue first#so i have vauge plans next year that havent solidified and i keep trying out stuff to see how many hours it would leave me with#historically my methods of maximizing time are:#1) work a flexible schedule with 9 hour days one pay period in order to get a day off for 'free' (this is how i'll get black friday off)#2) work over time and bank those hours as 'credit' time. i can have up to 24 hours/3 days worth of that stored#(i can easily do this long term by just like. working an extra hour every week and it'll add up lol)#3) receiving a time off award if management loves me enough (i normally get a free 8 hours award each year but i can't bet on this)#4) earning travel comp time by working overtime via work travel (such as your flight getting in at 8 pm or whatever)#5) earning normal comp time by attending a work event outside of normal hours (i.e. that time i worked on saturday)#these are all ways to get time off without dipping into PTO so that i can let the PTO accumulate#......as you can see i'm Very normal about this

How I Saved $10000 in 10 Months
I’m not a saver by birth. I like to spend money. I view money as only one type of currency, not the most valuable one. Time comes first in the ranks, followed by energy, and then comes money. Money is not and has never been particularly valuable to me. It rarely ever brought me happiness but I was convinced while growing up that my net worth was a reflection of my self worth.
I never liked the idea of being frugal. I didn’t enjoy having to go without to prepare for a future emergency. For the last three years I have made a pretty consistent yearly amount through tutoring, babysitting, administrative tasks, and other similar odd jobs. But, I lived like I made a lot more. I wasn’t spending on luxuries and going out. I was just spending more than I had on things that I needed, or seemed to need. I became increasingly worried about not having enough money.
The fear of not having enough money, instilled into me at such a young age added to this terror churning inside me. I went to bed and woke up in frenzy of overwhelming nausea and tears.
But one day, after a particularly bad incident with a client, I decided that enough was enough. This particular client generously offered to pay my semester tuition in full in exchange for unlimited tutoring. Eternally grateful, I accepted. This client proceeded to give me the run around for four weeks and on the final day, had me drive over 30 miles from town to town chasing her for the check. After a grueling three hours, she called to let me know that she was in the hospital and her husband never agreed to give me the money.
I was embarrassed, humiliated, exhausted, spent, and so ashamed of myself for letting this person take advantage of me and exploit my needs. It was in that moment that I decided to stop letting money have any hold on me whatsoever. I was going to manage my money; it was not going to manage me.
I joined Frugal Families on Facebook and gathered several books to help me. I read Ana Newell Jones, Amy Dacyzyn, and Dave Ramsey among countless others. (I don’t necessarily recommend this but I like to read so it was a win win) You can get similar information by watching Youtube videos or short articles.
Through all my collectives, I found that managing finances and saving money comes down to a pretty simple idea: don’t spend money. But, my problem, along with many people, isn’t that I didn’t know HOW to save money, but that I couldn’t convince myself of WHY.
My thinking of money was all screwed up! I associated saving with withholding, going without, deprivation, dependence, poverty, and unhappiness. I held money in the top tier of my self esteem and felt that I needed it to prove to people that they should respect me. Putting $1000 in the bank and not touching it is infinitely easier than learning to love yourself if you don’t already. Once your self esteem has been tied into how much money you spend, its a tough knot to untangle.
So, I took these baby steps ( to all my Dave Ramsey fans out there). It took me a couple months to compile all these steps and even longer to start to truly follow all of them. I am 23 years old, I make about 24K a year, I am a part time college student, and I don’t have any kids or dependents. A lot of people may be discouraged from reading this article because maybe I don’t fit their demographic, make more or less, have fewer expenses or some other excuse. They may be right. I don’t know how well these steps may work for other people and I definitely cannot guarantee any results. It’s just a look into my own experience. But, if you want to break the ball and chain of money has around your ankle or maybe even save up $10000, grab a notebook and at least give this a try!
1.
Remove people from your life that you feel value money too much. These people are easy to identify: who in your life do you feel judges you the most? Limit contact with these people for a set period of time (maybe forever), or just until you save $10000. These people breed thoughts of inadequacy and manipulate us into spending money we don't need and becoming people we don't want to be, i.e. a woman in the Tightwad Gazette who admitted that she spent more money on her wealthy nephew’s Christmas presents than her own children.
2.
Write down your goals, hopes and dreams (not financial goals). What kind of person are you now and what do you hope will change after you become financially stable? Where do you see yourself in ten years? What would you do if you had a million dollars? What are some things about your life that you wish you could change? Why can’t you? What are aspects of life that you are grateful for? What is your dream career? What are some of your insecurities and fears? Ask yourself all these questions and any more you can think of. This should be a private journal entry that you can look back to so, be as open as you can for yourself.
3.
Write down your financial goals. How much money do you want to save? My goal was $20,000.
4.
Analyze your spending. Print out the last few months of your bank statements. Make a list. In and out. What went into the bank account and what went out. This is on the bottom of every monthly statement.
5.
Categorize all the items that went “out”. I use a pretty simple system for this: necessary and not necessary. Rent, car payments, gas, and doctors are needs. Mcdonald’s, make up, even buying books instead of borrowing them are not necessary. Be careful not to categorize non necessities as “wants”. This implies a careless decision was made and that we should feel bad or embarrassed about it. Our money is ours and we may choose to spend it however we wish. Remember that we want to feel more confident in our decisions through this process.
6.
Evaluate your needs list. Obviously rent and car payments can’t be negotiated down but if all your needs eat up more than half your income, see if anything can change. In my personal example, I had a car payment of $198/month. During the summer months, when babysitting jobs were scarce, I only made about $900/month. Coupled with rent, I had $100 left over every month to survive on. The solution was not easy, short term, or inexpensive. I had to buy a used car and get rid of my lease, find another side gig for the summer, or find a cheaper place to stay.
7.
Evaluate your non necessities list.Create a category for every expense (eating out, crafts, shopping, subscriptions) and then prioritize them in order of used. If you spent $300 this month on books, it goes to the top of the list. Next, think about what you could and couldnt live without. Put those in order too. Note: this does not mean cutting everything out. Think about what is important to you and what can change. Just because something isnt a basic need, does not mean it is not important. For me, going out with friends, and a small budget to grab some fast food if I was still hungry after lunch meant a lot. So those went to the top of my list.
8.
For future reference, I recommend using a debit card as cash to be able to track all your purchases. So this baby step is get a debit card at a bank that is near you with a safe and convenient ATM. Commit to putting cash onto the card in small amounts to avoid temptation, but often, like once a week. I never keep more than $50 available on my debit card at any time. I have worked my weekly amount down to just $15, just enough to eat out twice a week.
9.
PAY DAY. If you are like me and don’t have a regular deposit schedule, make one and keep to it. Be flexible about how often and how much you want to see your money grow. I tried a bi-weekly deposit schedule but learned that I prefer looking at how much I made at the end of the week. So, I deposit money into my account every Friday.
10.
You have money, now what do you do with it?? Consult your needs list and put aside the amount that you cannot change this month. Pay your bills immediately.
11.
What is left over? Budget your non-necessities and leave that in your account. Take whatever is left and shove it into your savings account.
12.
Reconsider your budget. This is the part when you slowly trick your brain into enjoying frugality. Remember that amount that you shoved into savings? No you don’t! Next month, create your budget without that chunk of savings, so immediately after payday, shove it into your savings account after bills and before non-necessities. Don’t be discouraged if you have to touch your savings account because you went over budget. Just try to average out the same amount for 3-4 months. Also, even $5 is a hefty deposit amount if you’ve been picking away at your account for the past 6 months. Be proud of yourself for any and all progress!
This last step was very helpful to me because it helped me become more and more creative about how to live on less. I learned to prioritize my hobbies, treated myself sparingly, and invest time I had in place of money I didn’t have. Overall, I became much happier than I was.
Another tip, I’d like to include is to be kinder to yourself. In hindsight it is easy to look at my expenses and realize I could’ve put a little more away here and there but I have no regrets about the mistakes I have made. Step 4 was arguably the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life; analyze my mistakes and have compassion for myself. Even going forward, the continued slip ups I had taught me more about myself and helped me to make better decisions the next time.
I know this article seemingly boils down to taking a portion of your income and putting it into a savings account. But quite honestly, it has nothing to do with money. I have calculated that I could have put an extra $5000 away in the last ten months if I had really stuck to my needs, but that wasn’t the point. I wanted to live a life without the fear of money: not having enough, always wanting more. I was afraid to check my bank balance and I couldn’t resist a great sale that added to my net worth. Since I started my journey to financial stability, I don’t worry as much about what I have. That isn’t because I have a lot, but because I always know exactly what I had and I am confident about my ability to work with it. It shifted my mentality of depending on money to take care of me to realizing that only I am responsible and capable of taking care of myself and money is just one of many tools that can help me. Break the chain!

Here’s our take on the “best’ order of operations to pay for college. It’s important to note that this is more like a “pie” than a strict order. The more you can contribute from the “earlier” slices, the less you’ll have to borrow. And there is no “strict” rules here – but you should definitely use free fund before other funds.
How To Pay For College[ Order of Operations] 1. Scholarships and Grants2. Your Own Savings( as a student )3. Your Earnings( as a student )4. Parents Savings For College5. Parents Current Income6. Fellowships and Assistantships7. Aid Through School Work-Related Programs8. Federal Student Loans9. Private Student LoansFinal Thoughts
1. Scholarships and Grants
Gift aid is part of your financial aid award. This is money that does not have to be paid back. It includes grants, scholarships, and any source of private funding that doesn’t require you to pay it back.
Of course, it depends on getting your FAFSA submitted on time.
Some students might realize a large amount of scholarships and awards. Others might not be able to get as much.
Don’t forget to apply for private scholarships and grants as well – don’t simply depend on your school. This sounds crazy, but I recommend high schoolers apply to at least 50 scholarships.
Check out these guides :P TAGENDHow To Find Scholarships To Pay For CollegeHow To Find Grants To Pay For College2. Your Own Savings( as a student)
Saving for college involves scheming. If you’re one of a small group who has accumulated money for college, it’s time to put it to work.
Maybe you’ve been saving your graduation fund, or you’ve received birthday funds over day. Maybe grandma even left you some money to pay for college when you were younger.
If you have your own student savings, use it to pay for college is a great first step.
3. Your Earnings( as a student)
Additionally, employing your current income will help cut down on any loans you might need. If you don’t have any savings, use what you can from current income to help fund college.
A lot of people forget that they can earn money before going to school( i.e. the best summer jobs for college students ), or even run full hour during school.
I personally ran full period while going to university. I worked five days per week – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights, and during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. I tried to schedule my class for Tuesday and Thursday, or if necessary, before work on the other days.
Don’t know about ways to earn as a student? Check out our 100+ Ways To Make Money In College.
4. Mothers Savings For College
Next on the list is any money your mothers may have put aside for school. This could be in the form of a 529 college savings account, or other savings vehicle.
Many mothers have started saving for college for their students at a young age. Leveraging money in a tax deferred plan like a 529 savings account can be a great way to pay for the majority of school( if the money is there ).
Parents might also have other savings set aside for their child. It’s important to have dialogues about parental contributions early, so that everyone involved in the “paying for college” debate knows what to expect.
5. Mothers Current Income
Along with a student’s income, a parent’s income is also a primary source of paying for college. Even if parent’s have saved very much, they may be able to contribute a little bit towards the cost of college every year simply through their current salary.
Some parents may be able to contribute much more than others, but every little bit that can be sent in to avoid borrowing for school is a huge win.
6. Fellowships and Assistantships
If you are attending graduate school, a fellowship is a great source of funding. It is awarded to graduate students based on merit. It allows the graduate student to focus on their studies rather than having to work or teach. Fellowships do not have to be paid back. They also look great on CVs and carry a certain cachet.
“It’s basically the Harry Potter scar on your forehead indicating you’re an amazing intellectual, ” stated Meredith Drake Reitan, associate dean for graduate fellowships at the USC Graduate School.
“The fellowship program is about research potential, ” she said. “Faculty members might say,’ They’re not ready to apply to for the NSF Fellowship because their research hasn’t quite jelled.’ But that’s actually right where the NSF wants them — it’s designed to be an early career accelerator.”
The takeaway: don’t think you aren’t qualified for a fellowship. They are certainly worth is applicable for. Speak with your educational counselor or advisor about how and which ones may have the highest potential for successful acceptance.
7. Aid Through School Work-Related Programs
We continue down the list and come to work-related programs that are meant to provide a flexible schedule around your classes. At this phase, you’ve depleted all forms of funding that don’t require work exchange or loans. We’re now moving into funding sources that will require some sort of payback.
Work examines are common on college campuses. These programs are usually tied into your financial aid award. They allow you to work on campus within a flexible schedule. Pay is usually minimum wage, but you can’t beat the flexible schedule provided by these programs. While it is a smaller source of funding, depending on your class schedule, it might be the only type of job you can take on.
Assistantships are usually reserved for graduate students. These programs are similar to work examines except they are teaching positions. Often the student will teach lower-level classes in areas they are very familiar with.
8. Federal Student Loans
We’ve come to one of the last option as a source for funding college. This is money that must be paid back, will accrue interest and often has some type of origination fee. For many students, it’s difficult to avoid taking on loans.
Federal loans have a fairly low interest rate, which often does not surpassed the single digits. As reported by StudentAid.ed.gov, loans first disbursed on or after 7/1/ 18 and before 7/1/ 19 have the following interest rates :P TAGENDDirect Subsidized( undergraduate ): 5.05% Direct Unsubsidized( undergraduate ): 5.05% Direct Unsubsidized( alumnu or professional ): 6.60% Direct PLUS:( parents and graduate or professional students ): 7.60%
In regards to loans for college, you aren’t likely to find a better deal anywhere else.
Don’t believe us? Check out the Best Student Loan Rates here.
9. Private Student Loans
Private loans are another and final option. These may be loans from banks or other lenders that are non-government. They will have higher interest rates than government loans and won’t offer the same advantages such as hardship, forbearance, and fixed interest rates.
Private student loans should really be a last resort, and before borrowing, you should really do a full Return On Investment Calculation of your college expenditures to even see if college is worth it.
We recommend students shop and compare private loan options before taking them out. Credible is an excellent option because you can compare about 10 different lenders in 2 minutes and consider what you qualify for. Check out Credible here.
You can also consider the full list of private student loan options here: Best Private Student Loans.
Final Thoughts
Paying for college can be a challenge. It’s a huge sum of money, and there are a lot of different ways to go about it.
I like to think about it as a pie – each one of the steps above is a slice, and you can try to attain some bigger to minimize others.
The bottom line here is that you don’t need to borrow the entire amount for school. There are many different ways to pay for college if you work at it.

Retail delivery in the UK
This section presents some facts about grocery retail in the UK, with a focus on online and omnichannel. The different delivery models are then presented and analysed.
British Grocery Retail Market
Online grocery retailing in the UK is recognised as world leading (Delfmann et al. 2011). In the UK, online grocery sales were 82 Euro per capita, while just 2 € in Germany, and 23 € in Switzerland (Delfmann et al. 2011).
The grocery market in the UK is complex, with many competitors beyond the traditional big four grocers: Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda (Walmart), and Morrisons, and their smaller competitors, such as Waitrose. Niche players exist by focusing on the supply of particular products to niche consumers, such as organics, for example Able & Cole, and Riverford, or wine to budget consumers, such as Aldi. A national pure online competitor has also been established in the shape of Ocado, while international competitors, such as Amazon also provide food products. Indeed, underneath the surface, the situation is further complicated through supply chain collaborations. For example, Ocado supply logistics services to Morrisons, while Waitrose supply product to Ocado, and Morrisons supply fresh product to Amazon. Moreover, the boundaries between online grocery retailing and non-food retailing are increasingly blurring.
Delivery Options
The basic requirement used to select retailers for the analysis was that they offered both home delivery and Click and Collect. Among the leading grocery retailers only one, Morrisons, did not offer Click and Collect at the time of the analysis, and so is not analysed further. However, there is a difference between companies. Some are smaller in home delivery and larger in Click and Collect, especially as approaches to Click and Collect vary, such as the use of automated lockers. Table 1 provides an overview of the delivery options available in the UK among top grocery retailers. It is worth noting that “Home delivery” may actually be to any address in the UK, so this could be to a holiday cottage or work place, as well as the home.
In-store pick-up is a standard option, as it does not require substantial investments, compared to other solutions. However, the remaining options differ in popularity. Drive-through stations are in use, both attached to the store, as well stand alone, but still on the retail premises, such as at a hypermarket fuel station.
The biggest difference is in use of automated lockers, which are newer solutions and require significant investment. Lockers can be classified as attached, located near the store (Asda, Waitrose), as well as unattached, such as lockers placed by Waitrose at railway stations. Online shopping is open to customers who are over 18 years old, with a further restriction for alcohol. Registration also requires a credit or debit card as well as a default delivery address.
Home Delivery
Home delivery is already an established delivery model. It is available from all the retailers analysed. The UK-based discounters (Lidl and Asda) do not offer delivery services, except for high value niche products, such as wine. Waitrose is the only retailer among those analysed that offers home delivery of goods bought in the brick and mortar shop at the time of the analysis.
Coverage, Availability: Coverage of home delivery depends on the store network and internal policies. For example, Tesco covers most of the UK residential addresses, but some, such as camp sites, might be excluded. Sainsbury’s states that it covers 88% of the UK mainland and part of Northern Ireland. All retailers provide search facilities for service coverage. The customer just has to input a postcode on the webpage to find out if delivery is available in the selected area.
Delivery Days and Times: Deliveries are available 7 days a week from morning to late evening. There are differences between companies. Some might offer the same delivery time at weekends and weekdays, while others have reduced hours during the weekends and holidays. Delivery times by Waitrose vary between branches, and can be found online.
Delivery Timeslot: LengthTimeslots also differ between retailers. The most common windows are 1 or 2 hour slots. So called “flexible” slots (Flexi Saver Slot) are offered by Tesco. The customer selects a 4 hour slot, and then is informed by a text message which exact hour of those 4, the delivery will be conducted. This allows reducing waiting time for a customer and flexibility for Tesco to plan routing.
Delivery Velocity: Typically, a customer should select the delivery at least day in advance, up to a certain cut-off time. However, limited same day deliveries are offered by Tesco and Sainsbury. For same day deliveries, the earliest delivery slot is 6–7 pm (Sainsbury). Asda allows additional products to be added to the order at any time up to midnight the day before the delivery timeslot, while removing goods must be done by 5 pm the day before.
Basket Value: There are different approaches to the minimum size basket, but by value is the most common. The cost varies from £60 at Waitrose, via £40 at Tesco, to £25 for Asda and Sainsbury’s. However, this is related to delivery fees, conditions, and models. Missing goods that are not available in-store, as well as substitutions proposed by the store, are not considered when defining the basket value. Asda also pointed that it might use a different basket value depending upon the relevant store. The basket value can be calculated for grocery only or for a mix of grocery and non-grocery items, depending on the approach by a retailer. Different basket values are employed for subscription models, which are discussed later.
Delivery Fees: Delivery fees are associated with the value of the basket. In general, the higher the basket value the cheaper the delivery, with free delivery in exchange for a higher basket value. For example, at the time of writing, Waitrose had the highest basket value, £60, for free delivery. Sainsbury set their minimum basket value at £25, however under £40 is charged at £7 for delivery (£9 for same day delivery), while over £100 basket value is free delivery on Monday–Thursday after 2 pm, including same day delivery. A minimum delivery fee charge is also defined by Tesco (Minimum Basket Charge) and is £4. Asda has a minimum delivery charge of £1 and the fee depends on the day of the week, with the cheapest delivery during afternoons in midweek.
Subscription Models: Basket Value, Time and Fees
Subscriptions models provide an alternative to fees. There are choices between monthly, quarterly, half yearly, or annual payments. Such programmes are called Delivery Saver by Tesco or Delivery Pass by Asda and Sainsbury’s. Subscription programmes offer a choice of delivery fees, days, and defined minimum basket value. All programmes have similar features. A customer pays a regular fee, in exchange for free delivery, though minimum basket values still apply. A customer can select between lower cost mid-week working day deliveries (Tuesday to Thursday) or, for a higher fee, the whole seven days a week. In a subscription-based model, the customer is entitled to one delivery per day during the days defined in the conditions. To promote such an approach, retailers allow free monthly trials, as well as comparing regular, fee based orders against a subscription, to illustrate the lower cost subscription. As an extra benefit, customers may have priority during a high demand period, such as Christmas delivery slots (Tesco and Sainsbury). At Tesco, subscription members also do not pay for the Click and Collect service. Customers can select different programmes, periods, and fees.
Asda customers, on subscription fees, can select Recurring Slots, which means a regular weekly delivery, at the same time of the day. Orders in a Recurring Slot should be submitted two days before the delivery is scheduled. Sainsbury introduced greener grocery delivery, which means slots that are linked to already scheduled trips, so that the delivery is not a single dedicated trip, i.e. the address is on, or close by, to an already planned route.
Delivery Addresses: Subscription plans allows delivery to different addresses. Customers can also add extra information, helpful for the delivery, for example, how to access the home, which door to enter, or that the doorbell does not work. A typical fee based delivery is to the specified address provided at the online checkout. Packaging: In the UK, the retailer is required to charge for plastic bags by law. Hence, customers have a choice to select delivery with or without bags.
Receiving Person: All companies state that orders and registration for online shopping is for over 18s. This is also reflected in delivery policies. Items can be delivered to anyone over 18, but alcohol, will be delivered to customers over 25 years old only, who additionally might be asked to provide a document to confirm their age. All retailers have similar restrictions in place.
Absence of Customer: If a customer is absent, or if there is no one over 18 years old, then typically a delivery would be taken back, information left for the customer, and a new delivery time would be arranged. Drivers also try to phone the customer. There may be a charge for a redelivery.
Leaving Goods: Drivers can refuse to carry goods into the property when the delivery is perceived as unsafe, without a clear permit to enter the property, or a significantly long distance. In flats without a lift, items would be delivered to communal areas. For business addresses, typically the retailer delivers to the reception, not to individual offices or desks.

10 Tips for Writing
1. Don’t write linearly: Don’t set out to write something from beginning to end. A story is meant to be read from front to back, but not necessarily created that way. If you have an idea for writing the sixth chapter first, then start there. The epilogue can even be the first thing you put down on paper, then work your way back. Scattered chapters will eventually be filled in, and it will force you to look at the story from different angles, which may present different ideas or new approaches. You’d be surprised how well this works when a whole book starts coming together. It’s also great for getting around writer’s block.
2. Have two or more projects on the go: Speaking of writer’s block, having more than one project on the go is never a bad idea. Although focus and dedication are paramount to completing a work, sometimes you inevitably get stuck. It’s good to be able to move on to something else instead of feeling frustrated and stagnant. You don’t have to have a few big projects happening either … maybe you’re penning a novel, but also some short stories and an article or two.
3. Be your own editor: There are days where I have difficulty writing altogether, so I’ll switch to editing my stories rather than trying to create them. Never assume it is someone else’s job to fix your mistakes. Find all the errors first, and deal with them yourself. The more polished and refined your work is, the more favorably it will be received when you’re finally ready to present it.
4. Ask for (and take lots of) punishment: It is well worth finding yourself a professional writer or editor and asking/paying them to look at your work. Tell them to give you highly critical feedback with no sugarcoating. Let them go so far as to be cruel too, just so you really get the point. There is a lot of rejection and criticism involved in the publishing industry. Getting accustomed to it sooner than later is advantageous. If you want to be serious about your writing, then you’ll need to know everything wrong with your writing. Accepting and understanding the harsh realities of your shortcomings is a most important step to getting better.
5. Disconnect: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pintrest, the Internet in general … we know how invasive social media and technology is in our lives these days. We also know that it can be good for promotion, building a brand, and having an online presence. But you know what else social media and technology is really good for? Procrastination, distraction, and countless wasted hours. Being able to unplug for long periods of time is more important than you may think. All those tweets you’ve posted might have added up the word-count of half a novel by now…
6. Learn what good writing is: Honestly, there’s so much terrific writing out there, but there is also considerably more garbage as well. I’m constantly surprised by how many people don’t know the difference between the good and the bad. Art is subjective, true, but it isn’t that subjective when you remove ignorance and replace it with education. Duke Ellington said it best: “There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind”. The same applies to writing.
7. Have your own workspace: It’s trendy nowadays to take your laptop to coffee shop or bar and write in public. I even advocate a change of environment/atmosphere when writing feels stifled. But I believe it’s more important to have and maintain your own private workspace, a spot you can call your own with a desk and preferably a door you can close when you need to shut out the world in order to create your own.
8. Dedicate to the craft: Serious writing is not something you merely do if or when you can find the time. It’s not just for Sunday afternoons, or the occasional evening, or a few hours a week when you can give it some attention. Make the time, and make lots of it. Tackle the craft daily and dedicate a generous portion of your existence to honing your skills. You’re only going to get out of it what you put into it, and serious writing requires a lot of investment.
9. Time management: When it comes to the hours or days you’ve reserved for writing, make sure you stick to your guns. Consider it sacred. To most other people, your ‘writing time’ is merely ‘flexible time’. They will invariably think that you can cancel, minimize or postpone working when it suits you (or them). Tell these people that your personal work time is not negotiable; much like theirs isn’t at their day jobs. You don’t need a regimented schedule, but you do need to clock in the hours.
10. Remember the Three “P’s”: I’ll admit there’s still a hell of a lot more to say on the topic of writing tips, but what it all comes down to in the end are three things I believe writers need to remember above all else: Patience, Perseverance, and maintaining your sense of Purpose.

have I mentioned how much I hate money?
I talked to my boss at the sandwich shop, and asked if he could at least guarantee me 15 hours for when the semester starts. That’s 390,000 a month, which covers my bases (rent, utilities, internet, phone, transportation) with a little wiggle room.
Now, this is THE least paying job I have. but it’s close to home/school (walking distance), comes with free food, and a healthy, stable working environment and a boss who actually gives a shit and doesn’t mistreat part-timers/particularly foreigners. It’s like a safe-haven for those of us who work there. So I want to do my best to keep this job.
After some discussion, he said it would be possible as long as I’m able to take the Friday night and Saturday morning shifts. I was like “OK deal”
However. This sets me up for some other problems. See if you can follow lol
1. confliction with gym class job and tae kwon do lessons
If I schedule a class during registration during 5th or 6th period on any day of the week (so 2:00-3:15 or 3:30-4:45) I cannot continue teaching the gym class on Mondays because I have to be in Jamsil by 3:15, Which means I need to leave Anam around 2:15. Looking at my course prospects and needs, and 영강 options (cause of course i’m gonna take as many of those as I can cause although I enjoy the challenge and experience of taking my courses in Korean...if there’s an opportunity where I don’t have to, and thus avoiding setting myself up for barely passing but getting a chance at an actual good grade...then I would take it. So...because of this... I just might have to drop that job. which sucks because it’s SUPER FUN, and I love the kids. and after that i take the free tae kwon do lesson before i go home. Now, I spoke with the dojang owner, and i said that this is a likely possible case because monday and wednesday are less flexible in classes than say, Friday, which was the other day that I was originally going to also do the gym class, but since he just opened didn’t have enough students enrolled yet. So I told him, if it comes down to it, I would still like to teach the class, but maybe switch me to Friday if he can. I can still make the lesson in the evening on Monday, and still do the one after the class on Friday. I haven’t bought my uniform yet. BUT....if I agree to work at the sandwich shop in Anam until 9 on Fridays, I can’t do either of that. Can’t teach the class, can’t take the lesson. But this is 15,000 won per hour, for 2.5 hours PLUS free tae kwon do lessons, with a 1 hour commute...versus the 6,500 won per hour plus free food and nice working environment for 5 hours with no commute.
So you can see my concern...
2. confliction with soccer coaching
The same dojang owner owns the club where i’m coaching on thursday evenings, but in a different location, in southern Bundang area. It takes me about 1.5 hours to get there and back, and approximately 6,000won for the total commute. So in order for me to get there by 4:20 to help take the kids on the mini bus to their pickup spots and start the class by 5, i need to leave Anam by 3:00. So it’s the same situation where taking any class in period 5 or 6 (between 2 and 4:45) will render this job impossible. Since it’s cold out we’re only exercising indoors, and its really boring and limited, but once weather warms up I can actually really coach them with ball skills and teamwork. It’s a fun, legal and safe job too. The kids are growing to like me and i’m getting to like them too. As pain in the butts as they can be in terms of listening and paying attention, i actually enjoy it. It’s not the same as mindless sandwich making but also not entirely mentally draining either, being only for an hour. This is a 30,000 class.
So between the two classes, I’m earning 270,000won per month, for 16 hours of total work. It’s a really REALLY good deal. I also spend about 40,000 per month on the transportation back and forth, and about 5 hours per week in commute time, but I can study, relax, catch up on news and announcements on Portal (KU announcements) and other stuff, and nap during those times so i dont mind the commute so much.
Its the timing with my classes that i’m worried about...
and if my boss at the sandwich shop can guarantee 15 hours for me, that’s at least 4 free meals (plus whatever i decide to take home - although i really should be cutting down on the bread consumption lol) and 390,000 won, as I mentioned, for a 60 total hours worked. i can’t acquire any more hours than that, though. This is still nothing compared to the money i made working in the talking bar five days a week for 9k per hour almost every effing day until effing 4am...but still better.
So let’s see...
There are 168 hours in a week, and 744 hours per month (31 days) Hypothetically, if I managed 7 hours of sleep per day, that’s 217 hours per month spent sleeping. = 527 hours remain Plus with 6 classes at 3 credit hours each, that’s 18 hours per week spent in class, or approximately 85 hours/month = 442 60 hours working at the sandwich shop = 382 16 hours at the two gyms respectively = 366 commute time 5 hours per week = 341 2 hours 5 days a week at the gym is 40 hours = 301 2 hours of soccer 2x per week with Elise = 285 approximately 3 hours per day spent on meals (93) = 192 approximately 2 hours total per day for other random things that take up time (62) = 130 Divide that by 31 days in a month, that’s 4.2 hours per day to do things like rest, study, walk between classes, and chill. Which on paper like this seems like a lot of time.
but when i look at it on a daily basis MOST of that free time is on Sunday.
And saturdays and sundays are the most likely times we’ll have soccer games!
It’s all a mess and I don’t know what to do. :(
there are NO classes that I need that I can take at the times I need...and I don’t have any room for more “general studies” and I won’t be able to graduate at least one semester late.

How to Manage Your Time as a Freelancer
Most of us were under the impression that becoming our own boss will give us more time to spend on what matters most. Becoming a freelancer will enable us to be more flexible – “freeing” ourselves from the rigidity of working on a 9-5 schedule. It’ll be up to us to set our own time, prioritize tasks in our own way.
It’s only later we realize that having control over your own time is only good if you know how to manage it properly. Instead of catering to one boss, you now have to cater to many clients. Juggling multiple clients means that you can’t afford to waste time. If you want better profitability, you have to make sure that you maximize your time at work. However, much to your dismay, there are numerous distractions around you (we’re looking at you, Facebook and Instagram!).
Fortunately, time management is something that can be learned. And you don’t even need to take a course on how to start a business to learn them. There are plenty of strategies and tips you can easily incorporate into your freelancing life, so you can stop wasting precious time.
More importantly, doing this will allow you to get all the “free” time that you dreamed of enjoying. So here are 10 time management tips for freelancers to boost your overall productivity during this trying time.
1. Fix up Your Workspace
When you’re a freelancer, you can literally work from anywhere. There’s no rule that dictates you need to be in an office setting. However, all that freedom can be your downfall.
Working from bed can be incredibly tempting. You’ll be cozy and comfortable while earning yourself some money. Who could blame you? Unfortunately, science does. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard, working on the bed makes it difficult for a person to get quality sleep. In addition, separating your “home” from “work” will help you boost your productivity instead of hampering it.
So, where should you work? It doesn’t have to be somewhere special. If you want to make the most out of your precious time, you’ll need to set up a place where you’ll be able to focus on work. A room with a sturdy table, a comfortable chair, and a reliable internet connection are all you’ll need. Make sure that there’s no television to distract you.
If there’s no separate room at home for you to work in, pick a corner that will serve as your “office.” Invest in good headphones, so you can block out the outside world while you’re working. Make sure that your work area has a lot of natural lighting during the day and dedicated lighting for working at night.
One last tip for your work area – keep it clean and clutter-free. A messy work area can be distracting and make you less productive.
2. Eliminate Distractions
Generally, when you make money online, then you’re almost always connected to the internet. As a result, you always have easy access to social media. And here’s one fun fact for you: social media is the number one productivity killer. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and even LinkedIn can make you lose time and focus.
The problem with freelancing is that there’s no one who will make you accountable when you procrastinate and check out what’s trending on social media. One solution to this dilemma is to turn off your phone. But for freelancers who receive calls from clients on their phones, this may not be an ideal solution. If you belong to this category, you can choose to turn off the internet access of your phone and put your notifications on silent. Or, you can get an app that will block access to your social media accounts for a set amount of time.
Your email is another source of distraction. While you will need to check your email for work, it’s important that you limit the number of times you look at your inbox. Check your inbox for client messages first thing in the morning, right after lunch, and near the end of your workday. Doing this allows you to answer any emergency messages as well as help you create a working to-do list for the next day. If you work with a team, make sure that the status of your messenger app is set to “do not disturb.” This ensures that your team won’t be distracting you with unnecessary messages while you’re busy working on a task.
Aside from all the online distractions, you need to contend with, you also need to make sure you don’t get distracted by noise. If you work at home and live with other people, you might find yourself distracted by TV noise or chatter. A pet can also be distracting. Noise from outside your homes such as traffic or construction can also cause you to lose focus.
For this reason, it is recommended that you choose an isolated room as your work area. It’s also important that you ask family members to refrain from disturbing you when you’re “at work.” If this is not possible, wear headphones that will keep background noise out. Listening to music that boosts productivity and helps you focus is an added bonus.
3. Create a Schedule
Having a flexible schedule is one of the reasons why people choose freelancing. But it’s also a reason why freelancers tend to procrastinate. You have all the time to finish the project and meet the deadline, so you can take a mini-break first to check what’s happening on Twitter or Reddit. Of course, you inevitably find yourself pressed for time, stressed to high heaven just to get the work done before the client’s deadline.
Freelancers can avoid this predicament by creating a schedule. Yes, you read that right. You need to make a schedule. Take note that it doesn’t need to follow a strict 8-4 or 9-5 routine. You can make your own hours. For example, you can decide to work a set 6 or 8 hours a day. But you need to be disciplined about following that rule. In addition to setting your hours, you need to follow a routine.
Your routine should include all the tasks you need to accomplish for that particular day in order of priority. Your schedule should reflect this to-do list. Make sure that you also put time for breaks within the day to avoid burning out. With a schedule and a routine to follow, it’ll be easier for you to keep yourself focused and in the zone during your work hours. More importantly, you are able to set aside time for family, friends, and even yourself.
4. Manage your Workload
It’s easy to become overloaded with work when you’re a freelancer. You juggle multiple projects which have different tasks and timelines that you’ll need to keep an eye on. Getting overworked and overwhelmed isn’t going to help you maximize your time effectively. In fact, it’s going to decrease your productivity.
To help you manage your workload, you will need to prioritize your work and use a task management app like Trello and Todoist to keep yourself on track. This type of software can also help you break down difficult tasks into smaller ones which makes them even more achievable. As a result, the tasks don’t seem as insurmountable and prevents you from procrastinating.
Here’s a pro tip: work in short bursts. Use the Pomodoro technique or something similar. The idea is that you do nothing but work for a set period of time (in this case, 25 minutes) and then take a 5-minute break which you can use to brew tea or stretch. This allows you to be more focused on your task and helps you manage your distractions. It also decreases mental fatigue and maintains your motivation. More importantly, you stay in control of your time.
5. Learn to Say “No”
One of the most important lessons you need to learn is how to say “no” to clients, both current and potential. You can easily find yourself becoming a people-pleaser in order to ensure that you always have a payday coming in. However, too much work can easily overwhelm you, causing you to lose focus and productivity. The quality of your work will also suffer.
Set boundaries for yourself. Don’t let work carve into your free time. You became a freelancer in order to be in control of your life. Don’t let yourself be talked into a project just because they’ll pay you. Not all projects will be worth it. Prioritize work that will benefit your portfolio.
6. Track Your Time
Time is money. This is especially true when you’re a freelancer. The hours you work need to result in time paid. But how will you know how much to bill a client for work done if you don’t have an idea of how much time you spend on your tasks? Tracking your time will help you create an accurate budget as well as future project estimations. But that’s not all it can do for you.
When you track your time, you’re able to visualize how long each task takes. With this information, creating a to-do list is easier and so is sticking to your schedule. Moreover, tracking your time will help you evaluate your productivity. From there, you’ll be able to see how much time you actually spend working and if you’re wasting time on trivial things or distractions during your workday.
7. Don’t Multitask
Handling multiple projects is the life of a freelancer. But that doesn’t mean you literally switch from one project to another within the same workday. Switching gears is not easy. In fact, it’s a little like multitasking which is not good for productivity. Orienting yourself to a second project will waste precious time you could have spent finishing up the first one.
Instead of working on various projects within one day, make sure you schedule your deadlines far apart. This gives you time to work on one project, finish it (or at least meet a milestone), and then the rest of your time can be spent working on a new one. This way, your focus is not divided AND your productivity doesn’t suffer.
8. Stay Organized
We already know that clutter can have a negative impact on productivity and focus. So, organizing your workspace is essential to ensuring that you won’t easily get distracted from your work. But there’s another way for you to stay organized during the day. And by that, we mean your files – hard copies and soft copies. The former is easy enough to handle if you’ve got a filing cabinet. But you should also make sure that the files on your computer are all in order and easy to find.
Creating folders to keep all your documents – your login information, expenses, and client notes – organized will save you from wasting time searching for the information you need like what your client asked you to change on the project last week.
9. Treat Freelancing as a Job
You probably think this is too obvious. But many freelancers have made the mistake of letting their work bleed into the rest of their lives. Because you work from home (or at least take your work everywhere with you), it’s easy to continue your work well after your business hours just to keep a client happy. But doing so can affect your family time as well as your free time.
Too much work can lead to too much stress. And stress, as we all know, can affect your productivity. If you treat freelancing as a job, then the clock should stop ticking as soon as your business hours end. It’s one thing to create a schedule. The more important task is to stick with it.
10. Take Days Off
As we’ve already mentioned, sticking to your work schedule will do wonders for your productivity which means your time is always maximized, not one second wasted. However, free time is not just limited to staying off work after hours or on weekends. If you want to be effective in managing your time, you need to make sure that you get to rest and recharge from time to time.
It’s essential to have a work-life balance so that your creativity is not diminished. Not to mention your cognitive abilities. You opted to become a freelancer in order to free yourself up to live life the way you want.
So, here’s one of the essential time management tips for freelancers: take the time to play. Take a work-free day or two, maybe more, on a regular basis. Of course, this needs to be planned ahead of time. You’ll want to save for your vacation. You’ll also want to make sure that your client meetings, deadlines, etc. won’t be in conflict with your downtime.

– If you do not have a particular travel destination in mind, enroll in email signals about the least expensive tickets from a particular separation flight terminal (as well as any kind of close-by airports).
– If you have a details destination in mind, register for a low-fare alert from http://yapta.com or http://airfarewatchdog.com. Websites like AirfareWatchdog likewise arrange the most effective rates for flights from a particular city as well as to a specific city, so you can prepare a cost-efficient itinerary.
2)– Purchase-separate-1-way-flights-to-avoid-paying-round-ticket-prices-.
This is a trick made use of by numerous sophisticated airline company sleuths. Often spending for a pair of 1-way tickets amounts to less than purchasing a single round-trip ticket. So, as opposed to looking for round-trip tickets, look for a set of 1-way tickets as well as purchase them individually. You might also fly on a different airline company for every trip, relying on which airline companies give the cheapest 1-way flights.
– For example, it may cost $300 USD to get a round-trip ticket from Seattle to Denver. But if you get separate 1-way tickets from Seattle to Denver and back, you may only pay $75 per ticket.
3.3)– Use-a-credit-card-that-offers-travel-rewards-to-earn-frequent-flyer-miles-.
Travel rewards charge card commonly supply you a certain quantity of miles for every buck that you credit the card. If you utilize a credit card for most of your day-to-day acquisitions, making use of a travel card can be a terrific means to accumulate miles promptly. After that, when you have actually built up adequate miles to cover your round-trip ticket, you can take the trip free of charge.
– Contrast various traveling bank card to find the one that matches you ideal. For example, not all cards work with all significant airlines, and some cards might charge larger yearly costs than others.
– You can additionally get charge card with many major airlines. These cards generally give you hundreds of frequent-flyer miles when you trigger them and also remain to collect miles when you make acquisitions on the card.
3.4)– Use-your-frequent-flyer-miles-to-get-free-flights-.
Almost all airline companies supply frequent-flyer miles to anybody who flies with them. Authorize up online for their miles program if you utilize 1 airline a lot more regularly than any type of others. You’ll have to spend for numerous flights to build up sufficient miles, but once you have actually built up 20,000– 40,000 miles, you’ll have sufficient to obtain round-trip domestic tickets completely free!
– You can register for any airline company’s frequent-flyer program online. Input your name, address, credit card details, and address. The airline company will appoint you a frequent-flyer number that you can make use of to login to your account as well as money in your gathered miles.
With airline company ticket costs on the increase, more and even more individuals are looking for methods to score cheap tickets. Many airlines will certainly elevate their ticket prices once less than 14 days remain previous to the flight. – If you neglected to purchase your tickets 2-3 weeks prior to the day of your flight, the next-best option is to wait to buy tickets up until much less than 24 hours prior to your flight. Sometimes paying for a pair of 1-way tickets adds up to less than buying a single round-trip ticket. Rather of looking for round-trip tickets, search for a pair of 1-way tickets and also buy them individually.

Work From Home Tips From Someone Who’s Been Doing it for Nearly a Decade!
Back in 2011, when I quit my full-time job as a social media strategist in Singapore, I had no idea how to work from home. I struggled with my newfound freedom and lack of accountability. It was a challenge to be disciplined, meet deadlines and maintain a work-life balance in the face of myriad distractions.
And yet, as a newbie freelancer with little to fall back on, I knew I had to make it work. I’ve worn many hats since – travel writer, digital marketer, social entrepreneur, travel blogger, sustainable tourism consultant and author. As a digital nomad, I’ve worked on the go from a wide range of places: Guatemala, Georgia, Germany and Goa, among others.
Ever since the on-going crisis put us in a lockdown, I’ve seen plenty of work from home tips floating around. Get out of your PJs, draw up a regimented schedule, wear shoes (really?!), leave the TV on in the background (REALLY?!) and use fancy workflow tools.
I don’t know about you, but for me, the best part about working from home is being able to do it in my PJs No shoes, no bra, no complicated apps, no regimented schedules. Some discipline certainly helps. But so does the flexibility, and the creativity that stems from it.
PIN this working from home advice for later.
You could be looking for working from home advice to continue your full-time job, or simply to make this lockdown period more productive. A bit different from the work from home tips out there, here are mine to boost your productivity during these difficult times:
Tackle the biggest work from home challenge – social media
I guess it’s pretty obvious that in order to work from home (or anywhere else), you need to get your scrolling butt off Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Youtube, Whatsapp, Quora and whatever else you’re addicted to.
As someone who relies on social media for work, I could fool myself in my early work from home days that I was being productive. But over the years, I’ve mastered several tricks to ensure I don’t squander away all my time on social media:
Set time limits for apps: Discovering this iPhone feature has been a life-changer (Android has it too) and it’s perhaps my most essential working from home advice. When I’m not creating content on the go, I set it to one hour daily. I don’t always end up sticking to the limit, but once my cumulative hour is up, I constantly need to hit ‘ignore time limit’ to use any social networking app. This constant reminder keeps me productive.
Mute whatsapp group notifications so your phone isn’t constantly buzzing: Someone recently tweeted that teaching our parents how to use whatsapp is probably the biggest mistake of our generation! It’s seriously mindboggling how much time people tend to spend on whatsapp, reading and sharing mostly pointless forwards. As you work from home, especially during this lockdown time, make sure your whatsapp group notifications are muted (for a week, month or year), or the constant (and often fake) corona news won’t let you work at all!
Move your most-used social media apps away from the main screen: Doesn’t sound like much, but the simple act of moving my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter apps away from my main screen has decreased the time I spend on them. Every time I unlock my phone, my eyes instinctively look for Instagram, even if I intend to do something else. Not having the app in its place is a quick but effective reminder that I didn’t actually need it.
Use an app to block social media on your desktop / phone while you work: If none of the above tricks work for you, opt to use an app that simply doesn’t let you access social media for a certain amount of time. Offtime lets you block social apps and games. Freedom is a desktop tool to stop yourself from constantly refreshing your emails or whiling away time on distracting websites.
Monitor your screen time: You can read all the work from home tips out there, but monitoring what’s working is equally essential. Every few days, I check Screen Time on my phone to see the time I’ve spent on various apps and the result is usually shocking. Last week, thanks to the pandemic, my screen time averaged a whopping 4.5 hours a day. I’m determined to bring it down this week.

Keep old-fashioned notes, a long list of tasks and a short list of priorities
I’ve tried a whole bunch of note-keeping, productivity-boosting and to-do list keeping apps often found among work from home tips. But I always revert back to good old-fashioned notes (on my phone or in a physical notebook). Constantly distracted by technology, I always feel like I can do with one less app. Plus the joy of physically crossing something off your to-do list never diminishes!
Whatever your preference, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything you need / want to accomplish in a day or week. Some working from home advice that works for me is constantly jotting down all my pending tasks – even the ones that pop into my head just before sleeping. Every day or two, I realistically pick a few that are priority and dedicate my time to them.

Figure out a couple of music playlists that help you focus – and stick to them
You could be sharing your work from home space with a family that’s constantly buzzing around you. Or roommates with high decibel levels. Or with yourself, trying to keep the loneliness at bay. In every case, music helps.
I’ve found a fair few instrumental music playlists over the years that help me focus. Every time I listen to them, my mind automatically goes into work mode. Take some time to figure out what kind of music inspires you and lets you concentrate – and use it over and over again.
Some of my favorite ‘work from home’ playlists:
Piano music by Yiruma: So beautiful, sometimes I think I’d cry. But it puts me in a calm, melancholic mood which helps me write on good days.
Spanish guitar: Perfect for days I’m feeling low but need to work.
Marjan Farsad – Blue Flowers: Music that fills me with a strange nostalgia for Iran, but somehow puts my mind at ease.
Work out little rewards for yourself
When you work for yourself, or when your boss isn’t breathing down your neck, it can be hard to stay disciplined. I learnt early on in my work from home life that if I wanted to get some instant gratification for any work I managed to accomplish, I’d have to give it to myself. So I started setting little incentives for myself. I swear among all work from home tips, this one really works!
If I work without distractions for half an hour, or finish writing part of a story, or manage to cross off a time-consuming task on my to-do list, I reward myself. My rewards range from a snack, a quick call with a friend, a quick video on youtube or a few minutes of social media. I’ve even watched entire movies with 15 minute bites as rewards!

Sometimes the reward is just tuning out like this.
Flexibility, exercise and recreation time helps
I’m not a big fan of having a fixed routine. I find that it stifles creativity. Instead of a fixed work schedule, I find short bursts of high productivity far more effective than dragging work all day. Depending on the kind of work you do, maybe you feel differently. But atleast it’s worth experimenting with the flexibility that working from home affords.
I must confess that in my early work from home years, I let this flexibility consume me. Being self-employed, I felt there was always more I could squeeze into my time. But sacrificing that work-life balance can only burn us out.
These days, I try to workout in the morning (usually functional training or yoga), take out time to read and spend atleast an hour on something recreational. During the lockdown, that could mean practicing a language, watching a movie or bird watching. On days when I get lazy and don’t exercise physically or mentally, I can see a huge drop in my productivity.

If you live with someone, figure out your “corner” or clarify you’re working
Yes, I’m totally thinking of the Michael Scott Paper Company from The Office (if you haven’t seen the show, go binge watch!). Anyway, the best working from home advice while you’re living with someone is to create some space where people know not to disturb you. Ideally, this would be somewhere no one can even find you.
But failing that, it could be as simple as letting your partner, family or roommates know that you’re going into that mental space where you’d rather not be disturbed. Cutting out even 50% of the distraction can do wonders for our productivity.

Practice ‘news distancing’ (essential addition to work from home tips in 2020)
We’re already practicing social distancing. But I’m finding that for my own sanity, some amount of news distancing is important too! In the past few days, I’ve ignored my own work from home tips and found myself scrolling endlessly on news websites, while also consuming news from social media, whatsapp and offline conversations. It’s been mentally overwhelming, and terrible for my productivity.
I’m now determined to catch up on the news only once a day, and focus the rest of my time on staying productive and positive. I recommend you do the same.

Don’t be hard on yourself
This global travel lockdown is unprecedented. No one in our generation, or the one before us, has seen anything like it. We’re all dealing with the information overload, panic and social isolation in our own ways. So when it comes to implementing working from home advice, don’t be hard on yourself.
Even when I chose this life all those years ago and felt determined to make it work, it took me a long time to figure out how to stay disciplined and create a work-life balance. Whether you’re choosing it or have no choice, take a step back and think of all the things we take for granted. An income, access to technology, health. Go with the flow and stay positive. You’ve got this.

The Mobius Flex is both an elegantly simple work of electronics art, as well as an ingenious use of a flexible PCB. 🛸 The Curiosity rover's wheel's have taken quite a beating in the time it's been driving around the Martian surface. Take your files LITERALLY everywhere you go, with this implantable mesh network device. I appreciate how open-sourced this is, but I think I'll pass on implanting this in my forearm.
Software and Programming
From the MIT Tech Review: You can now practice firing someone in virtual reality. Well, isn't that lovely? How do you turn your macbook (or any laptop, for that matter) into a touchscreen for about $1? I'll give you a hint, computer vision is involved. This video of Bill Hader turning into the people he's impersonating is one of the most jarring things I've ever seen, and also the scariest deepfake-produced video I've ever encountered. Perhaps you've heard me say this here before (you have), but AI-driven fake news articles are getting uncannily good at writing to any prompt and we're going to start to have a really hard time identifying fake news, videos, etc. unless we're really paying close attention. Still don't believe me? Try making a fake article yourself.
Science, Engineering, and Biomedicine
🥃 What do you do with an artificial tongue? Taste whiskey to make sure it's not counterfeit, of course. 🔴🔴 According to popular lore, you can predict the weather based on sky color. The saying typically goes, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.” The saying has been around in various forms for a long time, and the reason it’s lasted so long is that it actually works (at least in certain parts of the world), as XKCD artist Randall Munroe explains with words (and cartoons) in the New York Times. ➕➕🧑➕🤴 It turns out that having a few extra husbands can be a good way to weather tough times. Apparently we've had the idea of a harem backwards this whole time.
Mapping, History, and Data Science
The Version Museum may be the easiest museum in the world to visit, seeing as you can get there right from the device you're reading this on right now. What does this Version Museum exhibit? The old versions of some of the world's most influential websites. (It really does feel like a "only 90s babies will remember..." article - crazy how much has changed in the just under a quarter century.) Here's a design guide for the flags of all the US states, which explains but doesn't quite justify why some of these designs were chosen. ⚰ Since it is my birthday today, I'll also continue a long-running social media tradition here and share my deathclock. Do you live in The Midwest?
Events and Opportunities
Maybe my channels to find out about upcoming events and opportunities have just increased, because we've got another jam-packed section in this edition of M&D:
Friday 9/6 I'd like to say Nanotech NYC scheduled their next nanonite happy hour in honor of my birthday, but I don't think Jacob or the other organizers know when my birthday is! (Although they do now.) At any rate, NYC's nanotech community (practitioners and enthusiasts alike) will be getting together at Clinton Hall in east Midtown.
Monday, 9/9 Small science gets a big showcase at Nano Day at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center. Learn about some of the most exciting nanotechnology research and innovations coming from the NYC area and meet other technologists working in the field.
Monday, 9/9 Innovation Forum New York is co-hosting a workshop with NYU Biolabs on fundraising for biotech startups, a topic of utmost importance to entrepreneurs in the life sciences. The workshop will provide valuable insights for all interested in starting their own company or considering work at a startup.
Tuesday, 9/10 The NYC Emerging Healthcare Technology meetup is holding their next event for anyone interested in creating websites for Healthcare
Tuesday, 9/10 The Accelerating BioVenture Innovation 12-week entrepreneurship training program kicks off at Cornell Med. Map of the Month
When we hear about the 2-3 Celsius increase in temperature that's going to set us on path to irreversible environmental changes, it often sounds like it's still a ways off. As this map from the Washington Post shows, that future is already becoming a reality in some parts of the US.

WHAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT DEFENSE
Since it is a standard, I won't get in trouble for appearing to be writing about things I don't understand. Counterargument might prove something. When you have a spare hour, and days later you're still working on it. When you get an unexpected result like this, it could either be a bug or a new discovery. Python example, where we are in effect simulating the code that a compiler would generate to implement a lexical variable.1 And it turned out the idea was on the right track. Distraction is fatal to startups. So I want to say explicitly that I am not surprised to hear it. The big disadvantage of the new system is that it makes your life a lot simpler. The core of ITA's application is a 200,000 line Common Lisp program that searches many orders of magnitude more possibilities than their competitors, who apparently are still using mainframe-era programming techniques. If you're benevolent, people will rally around you: investors, customers, other companies, and the essay will still survive. That, it turned out to be the real experiment this summer.
But it's important to realize that more articulate name-calling and a carefully reasoned refutation, but I think it would help to put names on the intermediate stages. If you just keep trying, you'll find it.2 How much of a problem.3 One reason programmers dislike meetings so much is that they're on a different type of schedule from other people. An area without railroads or power was a rich potential market. Business people in Silicon Valley and the whole world, for that matter have speculative meetings. If you asked the pointy-haired boss had to think of another. It's the sort of determination implied by phrases like don't give up on the startup, you are in big trouble. So you can test equality by comparing a pointer, instead of comparing each character.
It would cost something to run, you become very hard to kill. We know from Google and Yahoo that grad students can start successful startups.4 I'm generating by hand the expansions of some macro that I need to write.5 Both took years to succeed. I had to write down everything I remember from it, I doubt it would amount to much more than a page.6 So the more powerful the language, the shorter the program not simply in characters, of course, but in effect I had two workdays each day, you've basically built yourself a giant tamagotchi.7 Ideas 1-5 are now widespread. If that were true, he would be right on target.8 But in addition there's sometimes a cascading effect.9
So when I say it would take ITA's imaginary competitor five years to duplicate something ITA could write in Lisp in three months, I mean five years if nothing goes wrong. There are times when this format is what a writer wants. Unless the opposing argument actually depends on such things, the only purpose of correcting them is to discredit one's opponent.10 In Robert's defense, he was skeptical about Artix. Plunging into an idea is a good thing. This essay developed out of conversations I've had with several other programmers about why Java smelled suspicious. It has too many cooks.11 It meant one could expect future high paying jobs. They have a literal representation, can be stored in variables, can be passed as arguments, and so on. Though better than attacking the author, this is how most compression algorithms work. Running code at read-time lets users reprogram Lisp's syntax; running code at compile-time is the basis of Lisp's use as an extension language in programs like Emacs; and reading at runtime enables programs to communicate using s-expressions, an idea recently reinvented as XML.
The Defense Department is encouraging developers to use Java. Sometimes merely seeing the opposing case, with little or no supporting evidence. Another way of saying that is that half of you are going to get rich and the other founders causes you to get more done than you would otherwise, because every dinner is a mini Demo Day. This is the kind of possibility that the pointy-haired boss doesn't mind if his company gets their ass kicked, so long as no one can prove it's his fault. I called business stuff. I had to write down everything I remember from it, but at every point have working code—or the style of painting where you begin with a complete but very blurry sketch done in an hour, then spend a week cranking up the resolution.12 Can you do more of that?13 Cheap Intel processors, of the same type used in desktop machines, are now more than fast enough for servers.14 If you find yourself saying a sentence that ends with but we're going to keep working on it can't be preceded by but.
That, I think is a red herring. Exactly.15 What good is it? What I mean is that Lisp was first discovered by John McCarthy in 1958, and popular programming languages are pretty much equivalent. Our case is an unusual one. By using the classic device for simulating the manager's schedule. Such labels may help writers too.16 He was hosting thousands of people's blogs. When we haven't heard from, or about, a startup for a couple months, that's a bad sign.
Most intellectual dishonesty is unintentional. We were after the C programmers. I want to say explicitly that I am not a particularly good person. The number one thing not to do is expand it. Let them write lists of n things is so relaxing. You get away with it till the underlying conditions change, and then at each point a day, a week, a month I thought I'd already put in so much time that it was the first thing we thought of. Whereas now the phrase already read seems almost ill-formed. But there were moments when he was optimistic.17 An essay can go anywhere the writer wants. The current record holder for flexibility may be Daniel Gross of Greplin.
It's even the answer to questions that seem unrelated, like how to convince investors to give you bigger abstractions—bigger bricks, as it were, so you need explicit return statements to return values: function foo n return function i return n i To be fair, Perl also retains this distinction, but deals with it in typical Perl fashion by letting you omit returns. If you move there, the peer pressure that made you work harder all summer will continue to operate.18 The most likely scenario is 1 that no government will successfully establish a startup hub, and 2 that the spread of the Industrial Revolution, despite the fact that communication is so much faster now. But when I think back to the beginning, they were in.19 The web is turning writing into a conversation. Historically, languages designed for large organizations PL/I, Pascal, Ada, Visual Basic, the IBM AS400, VRML, ISO 9000, the SET protocol, VMS, Novell Netware, and CORBA, among others. I'm not saying that you won't get a lot of external evidence that benevolence works.20 The web is turning writing into a conversation. At each point a day, a week, a month I thought I'd already put in so much time that it was the first programming language to support it. They let you do what you want and get out of the PhD program in physics at Berkeley to do this.21 I'm not kidding.
Notes
If the next stage tend to have this second self keep a journal. And I'm sure for every startup founder or investor I saw that I didn't. It doesn't happen often. Though they were supposed to be employees, or that an idea where the recipe: someone guessed that there were already lots of potential winners, which make investments rather than insufficient effort to see it in the computer world, but this could be fixed within a few old professors in Palo Alto, but historical abuses are easier for some reason insists that you were able to hire a real reason out of a liberal education than past generations have.
Stone, op.
And when a wolf appears, is rated at-1. Now to people he knew. Scribes in ancient philosophy may be common in the past, and stir.
There are many senses of the techniques for stopping spam. In practice their usefulness is greatly enhanced by other people. Actually Emerson never mentioned mousetraps specifically.
It may indeed be a predictor of low salaries as the first couple months we can't figure out what the editors will have to recognize them when you had to work like casual conversation.
There is of course it was the fall of 2008 the terms they were friendlier to developers than Apple is now very slow, but which didn't taste very good job. Do College English Departments Come From? We could have used another algorithm and everything I say is being put through an internal process in their closets. Quite often at YC I find myself asking founders Would you use the name Homer, to drive the old version, I should degenerate from Subject foo not to have lunch at the command of the founders of Google to do due diligence for VCs if the statistics they consider are useful, how could I get attacked a lot of time on schleps, and owns significant equity in it.
Users dislike their new operating system so much on luck. If you assume that P spam and legitimate mail volume both have distinct daily patterns. After Greylock booted founder Philip Greenspun out of the best hackers work on Wall Street were in 2000, because universities are where a laptop would be critical to.
If you're expected to, so you'd have to pass so slowly for them by the time 1992 the entire period from the most valuable aspects of the company.
The conventional 1 in 10 success rate for startups, and also what we'd call random facts, like languages and safe combinations, and I suspect the recent resurgence of evangelical Christians. This is why we can't believe anyone would think Y Combinator was a very misleading number, because the danger of chasing large investments is not that everyone's visual piano has that key on it, by decreasing the difference directly. 1323-82.
The CPU weighed 3150 pounds, and the valuation of your identity. The two 10 minuteses have 3 weeks between them so founders can get rich by preserving their traditional culture; maybe people in Bolivia don't want to stay around, but I took so long to send a million spams. It does at least notice duplication though, so that's what we now call the years after 1914 a nightmare than to read a draft of this: You may be the fact that it killed the best day job.
Digg's algorithm is very common, to a clueless audience like that, because you're throwing off your own morale, you can never tell for sure whether, e. Trevor Blackwell wrote the ordering system was small. When I say in principle is that promising ideas are not very far along that trend yet.
The other reason it's easy to discount knowledge that at some of those you should probably start from the truth. And eventually markets learn how to value potential dividends. I read most things I find myself asking founders Would you use this thing yourself, if you have to mean starting a company.
Some VCs will offer you an asking price. Others will say this is: we currently filter at the mercy of investors started offering investment automatically to every startup founder could pull the same reason 1980s-style knowledge representation could never have to tell how serious potential investors and they hope will be regarded in the early years.
Naive founders think Wow, a few years. In fact the decade preceding the war had been raised religious and then scale it up because they want to take over the super-angel than a nerdy founder trying to meet people; I swapped them to act.
On the other hand, a torture device so called because it was. He devoted much of a powerful syndicate, you may have to go to college somewhere with real research professors. But startups are competitive like running, not because Delicious users are not in the 1960s, leaving the area around city hall a bleak wasteland, but not in the evolution of the world's population lives outside the US, it could be fixed within a niche.
The obvious choice for your pitch to evolve as e. There are two very different types of startups that are only about 2%.
According to the erosion of the world, but he turned them down. Not linearly of course finding words this way, because companies then were more the aggregate is what you build this? Then when we say it's ipso facto right to buy stock, the initial investors' point of view: either an IPO, or a 2004 Mercedes S600 sedan 122,000 or a blog that tried to preserve their wealth by forbidding the export of gold or silver.
Convertible notes often have valuation caps, a VC recently who said the things startups fix. Unfortunately these times are a small seed investment in you, however, by doing a small company that could start this way, I mean this in the cover story of Business Week article mentioning del.
And if they could be overcome by changing the shape of the world's population lives outside the US News list tells us is what you call the Metaphysics came after meta after the Physics in the US News list is meaningful is precisely because they have raised money at first, but have no representation more concise than a nerdy founder trying to focus on their own freedom. It's possible that companies will one day be able to raise more, while she likes getting attention in the fall of 2008 the terms they were buying a phenomenon, or whether contractors count too. Yes, I mean by evolution. I see a clear plan for life in Palo Alto to have fun in college.
Patrick Collison wrote At some point, there was near zero crossover. At first literature took a painfully long time.
A investor has a similar variation in prices. 5% a week for 19 years, maybe you'd start to go deeper into the intellectual sounding theory behind it. Obviously this is to protect themselves. San Jose.
