FEBRUARY 2024 WRAP UP
[loved liked ok nope dnf (reread) book club*]
The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years • The Memory Librarian • Pixels of You* • Arch-Enemies • Moby Dyke • Pip Bartlett’s Guide to Magical Creatures • A Sinister Revenge • Lud in the Mist • Crying in H Mart • Something Close to Magic • Hula • (Renegades) • The Divorce Colony • Foundryside • Earthlings • A Far Wilder Magic
total: 13 books (12 audiobook, 1 print)
Not as many books this month! And not just because February has fewer days, I was really in a funk this month and struggling to pay attention to my audiobooks (and enjoy them). You wouldn't think there's such a thing as too many books, but I think the overtime hours at work are hitting their peak mental health destruction. Here's to hoping things improve in March!
The Divorce Colony (4.5 stars) - genuinely can't believe this was my 3rd nonfic of the year already! I picked a print copy of this up at a library sale in December after hearing about divorce colonies in the early 20th century on a recent episode of the 99% Invisible podcast. Turns out this book was actually about the beginning of the moment that took place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the 1800's. Western states had shorter residency periods and less strict divorce laws, so women (and the occasional man) would travel west and live there for several months in order to obtain a divorce. This book tracks the movement through the stories of 4 of the more infamous cases to make the papers, and does an incredible job of weaving in the surrounding political and religious discussions. Would recommend, and has a great cover to boot!
Renegades (3 stars) - a reread, and for some reason it was torture. I originally read this back in 2018 and loved it, and wanted to tackle it again and actually finish the rest of the series. But I kept getting worked up and frustrated this time around! It kept trying to take itself seriously while also being very YA and kind of superhero-camp, and I was absolutely overthinking it lol. I found the strength to press on into book two, Archenemies (3.5 stars). I liked it a bit more! Something about it being new, the story being a bit more settled and maybe getting a better grasp on its message/politics, the characters growing more, me figuring out that I shouldn't listen to the audiobook for more than an hour or so at a time, lmao. Not great, but fun, and possibly worth reading? I'll keep y'all updated when I finish book 3.
Hula (5 stars) - incredible. Part generational family story, part history, part discussion of what it means to be Hawaiian, culturally and legally. Not always the easiest of reads, but it was so so worth it. It was also doing something very interesting with parts of the narration voiced by a collective "we" (culture/community?) that I would love to get a look at in print. Highly recommend, I'll definitely be getting myself a copy.
Something Close to Magic (4.5 stars) - an absolute delight! The Gail Carson Levine comp on this one is not entirely unearned, anyone who's a fan of fairy tale type fantasies will enjoy this, I had a great time! Very interestingly, it has characters who are in their mid to late teens, but is written in a way where they're still allowed to be young, to the point I'm surprised it didn't get shoehorned into MG instead of YA. If the author writes any more of these I'd be happy to read them.
Crying in H Mart (3.5 stars) - nonfic number 4! I'm sure everyone's heard of this one by now, which is why I finally picked it up. It's fine (which is why it got an extra .5 star), but on the scale of take it or leave it, I'd leave it. It just wasn't for me and I kind of wish I'd dnf'd it. A great cover though.
Lud-in-the-Mist (3.5 stars) - this one seems to be considered a sort of early precursor to fantasy and fairy tale type stories from the early 20th century, and I was eager to try it! While I definitely don't think it would feel out of place amongst it's more recent fellows (think the Last Unicorn, Robin McKinley, DWJ, etc), I absolutely could not get into it. Probably the chief recipient of "my brain doesn't want to cooperate, sorry," so maybe I'll give it another shot someday.
A Sinister Revenge (4 stars) - enjoyable as always! Not to hide this deep in my reviews or anything, but have the Emily Wilde people tried Veronica Speedwell yet?
Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures (3 stars) - This one's been sitting unread on my shelf for a while, and since I was on a bit of a Maggie Stiefvater run, I figured it was perfect! Well. Unless you are like 7, this was so bad. Not good. Having previously read and not liked a book by Maggie's co-author Jackson Pearce, I think it would not be unreasonable for me to assume she did most of the writing while Maggie did the illustrations - if the audiobook had been any longer than 4 hours I'd have absolutely DNF'd it, and I have no intention of continuing the series.
Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest to Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in the Country (4.5 stars) - part of me was wondering what I was doing trying this lol, not being someone who drinks or goes to bars, OR, as previously mentioned, is not the biggest fan of memoirs. It was not, as I hoped, also part research project, but it is a travelogue, and as a consequence has a strong narrative thread. It also has a lot of discussions about issues in the LGBTQ+ community, and overall I really liked it once I figured out what it was doing!
Pixels of You (3.5 stars) - a very short sapphic rivals-to friends-to lovers graphic novel about a human-form AI and a human with an android eye competing for a photography internship at an art gallery. The creators clearly put SO much thought into their characters and worldbuilding, but sadly there is nowhere near enough length here to do it all justice, and a number of elements felt very odd or under explored. The relationship parts are great! I just think this needed to be twice as long to really given everything its due, or maybe explored in prose instead.
The Memory Librarian (3.5 stars) - to start, I know nothing about the musical album this is related to, so I don't know how much that might have affected my reading. Overall I wasn't super impressed - when I discovered that the first story was cowritten by Alaya Dawn Johnson - no shade to her - I almost dropped it then, I just really didn't like her writing style in the one book I've read. But I stuck through it. Of the five stories, only one really stuck in my mind - Nevermind, cowritten by Danny Lore, which I could have read an entire novel about. I wish I could recommend it on its own, but overall I just don't quite understand the world Monae has created.
The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years (3.5 stars) - I probably should say more about the book, it was fine, I was surprised to find that it's set in relatively current day, I found myself a lot more interested in the second narrative about the house's history, which did make me cry a bit. Mostly though, I really just want to let you know how MUCH of a non-entity the djinn was in this story, I have no idea why it was there and why it was included in the title of the book. All the author had to do was make the house a little more sentient and haunted and it would be fine, idk. Read it if you want, but it's not one I would rec.
DNF'S
Foundryside - I was so ready. I had the first two audiobooks checked out, I had the third one on hold. I started this but oh, the writing. bleh. I was looking thought reviews and someone referred to it as something like "21st century internet speak." In a high fantasy novel. I noped out at just 10%.
Earthlings - I've considered the author's other book before but haven't read it, but thought maybe a sci-fic book would work better for me? The beginning was odd but not uninteresting, and I might have continued if it had stayed that way. But then the main character was in school(?) and her teacher started getting handsy after class and I wasn't invested enough to stick it out.
A Far Wilder Magic - the success of Something Close to Magic made me a little too hopeful I think, bc while I'm still a little leery around YA, I know people have liked this. And it sounded interesting, truly, and I love the cover. But first it was the religion stuff. And I didn't really like the characters. Then it's like, oh, this is the same plot as The Scorpio Races, but nowhere near it's quality in any shape or form. I decided to stop while I was ahead, before I started to actually dislike it. (anyway here's your PSA to go read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, I recommend doing it in October if you can).

And July. - 민기 - profiles 1 ☘️
☘️ Mingi x Female!Idol!Reader
☘️ And July. masterlist
☘️ now listening to: And July by HEIZE and DEAN
☘️ summary: When on her 4th comeback's backstage Y/N is unwillingly reunited with her brother, suddenly 8 boys are swept into her and her group mates' lifes. A tall boy in particular has taken a liking to Y/N and apparently, maybe... she feels the same?
❀ lucyd:
JYPE's new girl group. They debuted on January 31st of 2018 and have been active since then. A group that focuses mostly on its lore, their music is creative and innovative, but usually on the 'calm' side. lucyd's fandom is called "wytness". The group's members include Liu Daiyu, Jung Y/N, Yun Aili, Junyi Noa, Sugawara Moriko (aka Marte) and Choi Chinseon.
➯ See more info about lucyd (!coming soon!)
❀ Jung Y/N:
lucyd's lead vocalist and centre. She is a chaotic ball of energy around friends and when in public and with strangers, closed off and introverted. Her personality resembles Wooyoung's, but after all it makes sense, since she is his older sister. Left her home and family, cutting all ties, to pursue the idol career against her parent's wishes. Has never forgiven herself for leaving Wooyoung behind. Was saved from poverty after leaving her home thanks to her best friend, Lee Minho. Owns two cats, Latte and Orion.
❀ Moriko Sugawara (aka Marte):
lucyd's lead rapper and one of the three producers of the group. Her father is japanese but her mother is italian, so she also adopted an italian name, "Marte", using it as her stage name. Loud but introverted, she loves anime over anything else. Daiyu is her best friend. Incredibly savage and sassy, tends to be oblivious and unintentionally uncommunicative. Dresses like an emo girl.
❀ Liu Daiyu:
lucyd's leader and main dancer. Born and raised in China, she moved to Korea to achive her dream of becoming a dancer. Dancing became her passion after going through some rough patches on her life. Acts like a mother to all of the girls of the group although she herself can be childish too. Marte is her best friend. Loves hitting the gym. Believes in single girl supremacy.
❀ Junyi Noa:
lucyd's 'main' visual. Loves cats over everything else (except her girlfriend, Lee Chaeryeong, who she is madly in love with). 'Hates' all men, loves all women. Really tsundere and unresponsive with her friends (and everyone in general), flirty with girls she likes. Born and raised in China, moved to Korea as an exchange student. Her and Chinseon share the custody of a siamese cat called Kimbap. Her best friend is Shin Ryujin.
❀ Yun Aili:
lucyd's main vocalist, producer (2/3), Face of the group, and all rounder. Dedicated, hard working and a studio 'rat', never leaves the company and only works. Her mother is finnish, so her parents named her 'Aili', but her father is korean. She was born and raised in Korea and has been neighbors with Kim Seungmin since forever. They are also childhood friends because of this. Her best friend is Chinseon.
❀ Choi Chinseon:
lucyd's maknae, main rapper, 'secondary' visual, lead dancer and producer 3/3. She was born and raised in Korea. Her dream had always been songwriting. Really shy with everyone new (mostly boys), loud and annoying with friends. Nicknamed the clown of the group, she loves video games. Used to be an emo girl. Crushes on people too easily.

hi marte
You mentioned that harry's confidence is sky high. Do you think he is arrogant? Because of all the praise and love I feel like he is is like that and he mentioned that about himself as well in songs.
Also, if harry gets everything he wants ( I totally agree) why can't he ask his label to help out OT4?
Finally, do you think Harry gets everything he wants because he wants fame for himself or because they want him to top the charts so they will have power over him and via him?
Something with Harry being the golden goose and just going with it and being okay with it (and getting everything he wants while pushing 1D away) doesn’t sit right with me....
I think Louis also mentioned in 2017 or 2018 that Harry wouldnt have trouble finding the best songwriters etc because he is Harry Styles.
Hi, anon!
I think he might be arrogant in his relationships with Louis, but as an artist no, i don't think he's arrogant. I think he knows he's good at what he does, but i don't think he's got an exaggerated sense of his own importance or abilities. He doesn’t think he's better than others. I think he's got some narcissistic tendencies, but he's well aware of them. He want's the attention on himself. He sees everyone, and often greets them and make them feel important. He knows he wouldn't be where he is without his crew, his managers, 1D and his fans. He's appreciative and greatful. So that's the difference for me. He can want the attention on himself and at the same time appriciate and be humble about all the help he's gotten along the way to get him the amount attention and success that he's getting.
Harry gets everything he wants if it can help him become more successful and earn the label money. Harry helping the others would be sabotaging himself in the eyes of the label. They're on different contracts and labels. They're also competitors since they have overlapping fanbases. For example; Harry wouldn't be allowed to tell Liam when the Sony artists are dropping their albums this year so Liam could avoid dropping his at the same time and have a better chance of charting or going number 1.
I think Harry is pretty well aware he is being given opportunities and stuff the other ones doesn’t have access too. Some he's worked for and some were handed to him on a silver platter. I think H deserves all the success, opportunities and acclaim he's getting as a music artist. I just don't like how Sony positioned him and favoured him in the band in a way that hurt the others chances of being successful later on. But Sony didn’t think the others would have a chance. Historically, there can only be one successful member of a boyband going solo. It is what it is i guess. We just have to be extra supportive of the other four and cheer them on, knowing they were in a disadvantage coming out of the band and had to play catch up.

Bira içerek izlemek ister misin diye sordum. Attığı bakışla onayı aldığım gibi kendimi migros alkol reyonunda buldum. 10 bira alıp çıktık. 4 Corona, 1 Amsterdam.

Ticket War Part 1 : Why it's harder to get tickets
Story time no one cares about
Back in 2018 i had the chance to watch toumyu live in paris. 5years later i am trying to go to tokyo see toumyu again and i'm bringing you with me on the quest to get tickets !
In order to avoid creating messes of taylor swift proportions or worse every stage that has more demand than tickets available for sure you have to enter a lottery to have the right to buy one or 2 tickets.
And then you remember you are not in japan.
Up until now, very understandable and quite clever but japan has to be japan. You have rules and prerequisites that keep foreigners out.
For every account creation , you will have to enter a japanese real adress :
-> you totally can use your tenso adress for that (it's a japanese PO box/shipping service)
You will have to fill a phone number. it needs to be japanese issued number starting 070, 080 or 090. In order to recieve the activation code via SMS you will need to have a real one.
->The easiest service for forgeigners in japan is mobal but the sim card works only in japan. If you're like you will need a friend in japan to lend you their phone number and tell you the sms they recieve whitin the proper timeframe.
for a lawson account you have to fill in in order :
your name then name again in katakana
your postal code
your prefecture and adress
phone number
gender
date of birth
And Because you are here as a fan you will pay if you really want a chance at getting tickets. There are a bunch of lotteries, first for the different premium fanclubs and then whatever remains get to the general sale or lottery.
For toumyu we will have a maximum of 7 fanclub lotteries a premium lottery and the general sale
Fanclub Lottery list :
the first fanclub lottery and the only done over is the Official site Premium Fanclub lottery that accepted entries from 2/28 12:00 to 3/6 23:59
the next one will be the pre-order bonus for the Soundtrack album of Toumyu's Kosui. The cd will contain a code and a link to the lottery site for application.
it will look a little like that.
the lottery will accept entries from march 14th to 19th.
We can expect actor's fanclub to start lotteries from the 22nd of march to around the 28th like the one that has already been announced for naoki kunishima's upcoming fanclub
i will keep this tumblr updated when we will have more fanclub announces
and finally the elusive internationnal lottery, that i wished was more frequent
Notable warnings
As usual no fanclub is free, generally around 500yen a month it can be higher or require to get a yearly subcription in order to be able to enter.
most fanclubs accept foreign cards no problem.
the official rules prevent fans to get several accounts on every paying service to try to get tickets but there are a lot of multi account users out there
"General" Lottery list :
The general lottery also called Lawson ticket pre-request lottery is the last one, the only free of charge to enter
accepting entires from 2023/3/31 12:00 to the 4/4 23:59
On the same site just before there will be an LEncore advance lottery for paying members of that service
Accepting entries from 2023/3/28 12:00 to 3/30 23:59
And then if you have the luck to get through this you have the paying problem !
but to pay on lawson tickets you will have only 2 options :
the Jp credit card that is very hard to obtain
or paying in the conbini.
i will do a complete conbini payment guide later but in summary you have to send someone, in japan, pay in the family mart within 3 to 5 days of selection !
getting a ticket feels like :
upcoming on part 2 first lottery results, general ticket choice for toumyu advices and a few horror stories around getting tickets

What does the American Marten look like?
The American Marten, aka the American Pine Marten (Martes americana) can be described as long slender animals that display bilateral symmetry, and have sexual dimorphism where males tend to be larger than females (Ellis, 1999). The males measure to be around 510-680 mm (with tails included) and the females are slightly smaller with a body length between 455-600 mm (with tails included) (Nature Canada, 2018; Ellis, 1999). Males weigh between 470-1300g and females weigh between 280 and 850g (Nature Canada, 2018; Ellis, 1999). They can live up to 17 years in captivity and tend to live up to 9 years in the wild (Nature Canada, 2018). In the wild, they are particularly vulnerable to wolves or owls when they are at young age, but their agility and speed helps them against these predators (Nature Canada, 2018).

Their appearance can be described as having a long shiny fur coat with a grey head, dark brown/black legs and tail, a golden brown back coat with a cream patch on their chest (Nature Canada, 2018; Ellis, 1999). Their summer coat tends to be lighter in colour and has a faded appearance (Ontario Fur Managers Federation, 2023). New fur growth begins in early fall and is completed by October in order to prepare for the harsh cold weather of winter (Ontario Fur Managers Federation, 2023)!

The American Marten has large ears, shaped similar to a cat, with large black eyes (Nature Canada, 2018). Claws are sharp, curved and semi-retractable (Nature Canada, 2018; Ellis, 1999). The Pine Marten has a slender body with short limbs and a bushy tail (GBIF, 2022). Their dental formula is as follows: I 3/3, C 2/1, P 4/4, M ½ (GBIF, 2022; Kollias & Fernandez-Moran, 2016).

Ramirez-Commey and Estrada-Rupprecht will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
FRESNO, Calif. — The fighting pride of California’s Central Valley and one of boxing’s pound-for-pound queens are joining forces for a special Fresno Fight Night. Former unified 140-pound world champion Jose Ramirez will meet former lightweight world champion Richard “RC” Commey in the 12-round junior welterweight main event Saturday, March 25, at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The co-feature will be a world title unification clash, as WBA minimumweight world champion Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada collides with WBC world champion Tina Rupprecht. Ramirez-Commey and Estrada-Rupprecht will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with DiBella Entertainment, tickets starting at $29 go on sale go on sale Friday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com and the Arena Box Office. Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs), from Avenal, California, returns home to the friendly confines of the Save Mart Center, which has hosted six of his previous fights. Following his 2021 decision defeat to Josh Taylor for the undisputed junior welterweight title, Ramirez rebounded last March with a unanimous decision victory over former two-weight world champion Jose Pedraza. He has been among the sport’s best 140-pounders since winning the WBC world title over Amir Imam in March 2018. After defending that title twice, Ramirez stopped Maurice Hooker in six brutal rounds to unify the WBC and WBO titles. Ramirez retained both belts with a hard-fought majority decision over Viktor Postol in August 2020, a win that set up the Taylor showdown. “Fresno and the Save Mart Center hold a special place in my heart, and I am blessed to be able fight in front of my Central Valley fans once again,” Ramirez said. “Richard Commey is a championship fighter with everything to gain. I expect the best version of Commey on March 25. My goal is to become champion again, and I am more motivated than ever to prove that I am the best junior welterweight in the world.” "Ramirez is motivated like I have never seen, and he's out to prove some things,” said Rick Mirigian, Ramirez’s manager. “It all starts in Fresno in front of 15,000 hometown fans." Commey (30-4-1, 27 KOs), from Accra, Ghana, made his name as one of the sport’s top lightweights, winning Commonwealth honors before capturing the IBF world title in February 2019. His title reign lasted 10 months, as he knocked out former world champion Ray Beltran before a stunning second-round stoppage defeat to Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden. Commey’s lightweight run ended with a December 2021 decision loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko. Last August, in his junior welterweight debut, he fought to a 10-round draw against Pedraza. Commey said, “I want to thank my team for putting me on the path to fulfilling my dream of becoming a two-weight world champion. I also want to thank Bob Arum and Top Rank for once again showing faith in me by allowing me to headline against a formidable opponent in Jose Ramirez. I’m up for the challenge, and I intend to make Ghana and all my fans around the world proud." Estrada (23-0, 9 KOs), from East Los Angeles, California, returns to her home state intent on unifying world titles for the first time in her decorated career. The 30-year-old veteran turned pro nearly a dozen years ago and has competed at the world class level in three weight classes. In 2021, she captured the WBA minimumweight and WBO light flyweight titles in consecutive fights. Estrada then vacated the light flyweight title to pursue undisputed glory at minimumweight. She signed with Top Rank last year and returned from a nearly 11-month layoff in November to shut out Jazmin Gala Villarino. “I want to give Tina credit for being a world champion who isn’t afraid of a unification fight, unlike Yokasta Valle,” Estrada said. “Since we couldn’t get Yokasta into the ring, we decided to do one better and fight the woman who beat her. The Fresno fans are passionate, and they are in for a great show.” Rupprecht (12-0-1, 3 KOs), from Augsburg, Germany, has made five defenses of her world title after being elevated from interim champion in 2018. Earlier that year, she toppled Valle, who is the current IBF and WBO unified minimumweight world champion In July 2021, Rupprecht edged former world champion Katia Gutierrez by split decision. Following more than a year away from the ring, she shook off the ring rust to dominate Peruvian veteran Rocio Gaspar to set up the Estrada showdown. Rupprecht has fought all but one of her pro bouts in Germany and will make the nearly 6,000-mile journey in hopes of ruining Estrada’s undisputed goal. “To fight in America against a fellow world champion in a world title unification is a dream come true for me,” Rupprecht said. “Seniesa is considered one of the sport’s best fighters, and I look forward to seeing who is the true number one in the division. This will be a Fight of the Year candidate and another huge night for female boxing. I’m going to be victorious and return to Germany with two world title belts.” The undercard, streaming live and exclusively on ESPN+, is scheduled to include the following standouts: Lightweight contender Raymond “Danger” Muratalla (16-0, 13 KOs), from Fontana, California, and trained by Robert Garcia, makes his 2023 debut in a 10-rounder. Muratalla went 3-0 in 2022, including stoppage victories over veterans Jeremy Hill and Miguel Contreras. Rising lightweight Karlos Balderas (14-1, 12 KOs), a 2016 U.S. Olympian from Santa Maria, California, looks to author his sixth consecutive victory in an eight-rounder. Balderas is coming off a career-best showing over Esteban Sanchez, a methodical beatdown that resulted in an eighth-round TKO. Antonio “El Gigante” Mireles (6-0, 6 KOs), a 6-foot-9 heavyweight from Des Moines, Iowa, aims for knockout number seven in a six-rounder. Mireles has three first-round knockouts and three second-round stoppages on his ledger. Lightweight prospect Charlie Sheehy (5-0, 4 KOs), the former U.S. amateur star from Brisbane, California, makes his third professional appearance in Fresno in a six-rounder. Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (8-0, 2 KOs), who trains with Ramirez at Robert Garcia Boxing Academy, will fight an opponent to be named in a six-round middleweight tilt. Flyweight prospect Jessie James Guerrero (3-0-1, 3 KOs), from Gilroy, California, will see action in a four-rounder in his U.S. debut.
