' it feels weird to be back here '

a year had passed since the tragic disappearance of Selena and Hannah. and the remaining five friends found themselves back at the isolated ski lodge way high up in Blackwood pines. The memories of that fateful night still lingered, casting a heavy shadow of their reunion. Yet, against all odds, they had decides to return, drawn to the place that held both painful memories and a sense of unfinished business.

Jude, y/n, marcus, Trent and Declan stood in de main hall of the lodge, their footsteps echoing through the empty space. Dust covered every surfce which gave the place an eerie, abandoned feel. The air was thick with a mix of anticipation en trepidation.

Jude's gaze swept across the room, taking in the familiar surroundigs that had once been filled with laughter and youthful energy. Now, it felt like a haunted relic from their past. Even though, he was determined not to let his fear wear off. After all, he had still an image to uphold as a jock amonst the group.

"So we are really doing this?"

Jude's voice was laced with a hint of excitement and unease.

"coming back here even after everything that had happened?"

He looked at his friends, searching for their faces for any hesitation. The lodge was dark so there wasn't really much to see in the first place. Their agreement to return to the lodge was a testament to their resilience, their desire to confront what they had feared head on.

Trent was the one that nodded as he placed his bag down on the rustic floor that creaked beneath his feet as he inched closer to the couch that once had space for all seven of them.

"we owe it to Selena and Hannah, they would want us to come back here"

Y/n, who had been standing in the same spot the moment they entered the lodge had agreed with what Trent had said. They would've wanted them to come back even if it was just to figure out what happened that night a year ago.

With shared resolve, everyone turned their own way to place their belongings in their own room which all belonged to the second floored lodge that shielded them from the howling wind outside. Y/n however, she dropped her bags by the nearby door and made her way further into the quiet hall. Her fingers lingerd over the light switch to turn it on, but much to her dismay-- no source of light lit up her way.

"we really need some fixing on the light"

Marcus had shrugged from upstairs as he leaned over the railing. Surely the lights had been turned off, if not even completely cut off. No one had been here over a year so there was really nothing needed anymore.

"no shit, Y/n. This place had basically been abandoned"

Marcus voice from upstairs echoed through the lodge, aware of the incredible dulness that filled the confinements. Sam curled her fingers around the picture on the table and even though she wanted to maintain her posture, it was impossible when her eyes fell on the snapped memory with Jude wrapping both his arms around Hannah and Selena.

Movie night with the lads, 2022 14th of december.

She had read it in the newspaper last year that both Selena and Hannah were found dead at the bottom of the cliff which was unusual, for both sisters weren't the type to be reckless. Perhaps the embarassment that Selena had felt when the what-seemed-like harmless prank that made her swerve and trip down. Her fingers continued to feel the worn edges of the photo while the snow continued to fall onto the pavement, reminding her of the harsh reality they were in.

Jude, seemingly aware of y/n’s unease, had made his way over to her with delightful steps. The smiles captured in the photograph seemed so distant now which was a stark contrast to the somber atmosphere that haunted Blackwood pines.

"seems like a lifetime ago, doesn't it? we were so young and youthful we had no idea what was coming for us"

His fingers grazed the edge of the photgraph, tracing the countours of their faces captured. The weight of guilt settled in the pit of his stomach, the regret of the mean-hearted prank taking it's toll on him. He was sure that by the time dinner came around, they would go over the prank that was spelled upon Selena until they would find the harm in it.

And through the forest and through the trees, there was not one hint of something alive, for Blackwood pines was as perished as their joy was. It had been left unintended for a solid year as in 2022 they had officially shut down the entirity of this place. However, that did not diminish the group's resilience for they wanted closure in something that was not quite here anymore.

Declan, ever the calm one had snuck up on Jude and y/n too-- noticing their lingering gazes on the photograph that was nothing but a distant memory.

"everything has been left untouched, it feels as if the government just forgot about this place--"

Both y/n and Jude turned around to face Declan, his words creating some kind of worry. If they really had left this place all alone, what more laid beneath the hills and through the thick leaves of the forest?

"--but I did find a smaller lodge on a walkable path from here. Trent and I will start dinner, would you two mind to switch up there lights again? I don't do well with my night vision"

And so Jude and y/n ventured on the apparent walkable path over a smaller bridge towards the other lodge that held all the advantages to the lights that Declan so desperately needed. Sam chuckled under her breath as her boots snapped on the snow beneath her feet. The snowstorm seemed to be worsening and none of them were prepared for the cold temperatures heading their way.

"walkable my fucking ass, I´m breaking my neck here"

and event though the reference wasn't all too smooth considering her two friends did break their necks, she continued to walk towards the smaller lodge with Jude by her side. The group of seven friends in which were now only five had met many years ago in college when they all followed the same degree. They begun to form a tight knotted alliance, but Sam was afraid that because of the prank-- they were everything but tight anymore. Cautious, that is what they were.

Reaching the smaller lodge, y/n held her flashlight of her phone closer to her since the rustling in the bushes and the crescent moonlight from above was enough to make her a sceptic.

"Let's get the lights on and get out of here"

Sharing my dreams on here now bc they’re wild and want to inflict them on my mutuals.

I dreamed that my family had to move to England, and it was the start of the school year and I was like. The new Yeehaw American kid there. And this school was also like. Inside a castle, they just like put classrooms in it. And it was really snowy and I kept falling face first in snow and slipping on ice and all the kids kept looking at me bc I didn’t have like. English legs or whatever.

But the best part was when the kids were like. Gym class! Let’s play an American game for the new kid. And it was dodgeball/capture the flag. But they were playing wrong and I was really confused so I started playing more competitively and like getting people jailed and stealing the flags. And then they were like wooo! It’s time for halftime. And they brought out this jock and a really pissed kangaroo and were like. Yeaaaa kick off! And the jock was like. You’re gonna need to move or else the kanga might come after you. But I was stuck and the thing went nuts and I was running through the halls of this castle RUNNING from this agitated kangaroo. And I hid from it in the fucking. Ye olde kitchen. And it started talking to m about life, creepy shit like. And I hate that I remember this vividly:

and then it started like crashing around in the kitchen so I ran out and back to the gym but it was all overgrown with plants and tall grasses in trippy colors and everyone was hiding. And the gym teacher popped up and said “there is nothing left to do but hide! Play your tapes and the sound will cover us:” so I found a section of grass to lie down in and there were these old cassette tapes and everyone started playing them and they were recordings of their voices saying things and I played mine and it was gibberish. And the Kangaroo came back into the gym and slowly emerged from the tall grass looking at me.

And then I woke up.

after. four rewatches of headless, two of which were sponsored by dragging my parents into watching it with me, here’s a thought that i thunk.

spoilers below!!!

at least three of the characters (ichabod, matilda, baltus) all have fake books that they store their possessions inside. this makes varying levels of sense for their characters; matilda for the Vibes of spooky witch lady, baltus for keeping his bribery checks a secret, and ichabod for the fact that he’s a people pleaser who probably bought it off matilda to make her happy, but also ties in to a greater theme of the series.

(literally) not judging a book by its cover.

all three of these characters—and more!!—have ulterior agendas that are revealed throughout the series. ichabod isn’t just some dweeb in sleepy hollow by happenstance, he’s a descendant of the storms family, come back to town to right an ancient wrong. he is also a dweeb, but like. a cool dweeb. matilda isn’t just a witch, she’s keeping the undead corpse of her best friend alive with ancient evil magics and covertly working against her new friends. baltus isn’t just the town’s genial mayor, but a cutthroat politician who killed two people in his attempt to kill a third.

similarly, this lends itself to the story’s theme as a whole, that people are far more than what you expect. although this is plain to see in characters like brom (and his babes), who start off as airhead jocks with some pithy social commentary and wind up as airhead jocks with hearts of gold and loyalties as strong as the horseman’s sword, it is exemplified with the character of the horseman herself. so much of headless is about reexamining history and stripping away old biases. everyone believes the horseman is a decapitated hessian soldier, but is actually a woman practically written out of history in favor of her more famous husband. it’s about doing away with commonly accepted narratives and taking a closer look at the stories that accumulated to build the myth we all know today.

the fake books are both windows into the souls of their owners and the soul of the entire story!!! on the outside?? a beheaded hessian!!! on the inside??? a doing away with the ideas of colonialist cis white male-centric historical narratives that get preserved and a doing of justice for the names that get left out!!! it kicks ass!!!!! it kicks so much ass!!!!!

7.Representation - Analysing the stereotypes used in The Quarry

This blog post is about how stereotypes are used in “The Quarry” and how it influences the player.

The Quarry (fig.1) is an interactive horror game, released by Supermassive Games in 2022 with positive feedback. The game is directly inspired from Until Dawn, a game also made by Supermassive Games in 2015. However, with “The Quarry”, the studio focused more on the story and with a theme approachable by a larger audience. I chose this game to talk about stereotypes as the main focus of the game is the characters development and how, using the ergodic narrative style of the game, you can influence and connect with the characters.

Switching between all nine teenagers, you need to survive the mysteries of Hackett’s Quarry. While playing with each character, you get to make choices which determine the development of each character. Depending on your choices, characters may discover collectables, die, help other characters survive, and kill the antagonist. Due to so many branches the game can take, the game has 186 possible endings. As the story unfolds you have to survive the werewolf attack and prevent the curse from spreading.

Each character fits into a stereotypical teenage mould (fig.2): the jock (Jacob), the pretty influencer (Emma), the comic (Dylan), the shy loner (Abigail), the rebellious girl (Kaitlyn), the sarcastic silent (Ryan), the good girl (Laura), the first victim (Nick). Stereotypes are always used in story based games and films, especially in the horror genre, getting influence from films like “Halloween”, “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, as they are considered the most influential. Researchers believe that “ stereotypes are, in fact, “short cuts” taken unconsciously to help people make decisions more easily and quickly, hence the tendency to unthinkingly accept them.” (Horror movie stereotypes and how they formed the genre (2022) The Eagle’s Eye). Following this statement, I believe that games like “The Quarry”(2022) use stereotypes because it helps the player to connect with the characters faster, having an already preconception about their hypothetical background. This helps the player focus more on the story and care more about the characters.

Even though at first sight the stereotypical characters seem shallow, throughout the game, based on your choices, you can see them form more complex personalities. For example, when Dylan and Ryan have to make a choice whether to take the gun from the office or not, the player has to make a choice for Dylan, “the comic one”, to either give a serious answer or a playful one (fig.3). This radical situation shows that the choices the player makes not only affect the narrative outcome, but also the social development of the characters. Of course, the player cannot totally change the structure of the characters, for example the silent shy cannot become the confident jock, as it would break the whole structure of the game and story. As a result, I believe the player can alter the characters, while keeping them in a spectrum, between determined parameters, in order not to affect the role each character has to play in the story.

Stereotypes can also be seen in other elements besides the main characters such as the werewolves, the environment and in some cases, the plot itself. For the werewolves (fig.4), stereotypes are essential, as they help the player recognise the characters, even though it is a mythical creature. If the art department would have totally changed the design of the creatures, the player wouldn't have been able to recognise them. In addition, the narrative uses sometimes stereotypical plot twists specific to the horror genre. I believe the developers decided to use those stereotypes as it is already known to have a good impact on the viewer, creating the tension effects, which is a key factor for the immersive experience.

In conclusion, it is always important to have proper representations that promote diversity and inclusivity, without using stereotypes that are degrading or unrealistic. Even if stereotypes can have a negative impact on society, they have become such a big part of our structure, that in some cases we find them necessary in order to recognize and emphasise with the world.

Dark Horse Comics to Publish Print Editions of “We Have Demons”

Dark Horse Comics, comiXology Originals, and Scott Snyder’s Best Jacket Press have partnered up to publish print editions of Snyder’s Best Jacket Press titles on comiXology Originals, beginning with We Have Demons.

We Have Demons hails from writer and co-creator Scott Snyder, artist and co-creator Greg Capullo, inker Jonathan Glapion, colorist Dave McCaig, and letterer Tom Napolitano. The comic will be printed in three periodical issues releasing monthly with bonus material. Each issue features a main cover by Capullo, a foil variant of the main cover, and a variant cover - issue #1 by Jock, issue #2 by Francis Manapul, and issue #3 by Francesco Francavilla. 

We Have Demons #1 (of 3) goes on sale on March 23, 2022. Dark Horse Comics will release the  trade paperback of We Have Demons on August 9, 2022.

Brazil wears bright yellow shirts and in 1970 they were solid gold. Author, Sam Kunti, describes “how the greatest team of all-time won the World Cup” and (then) for the third time - Pele included, making a Cup hat-trick echoing the achievements of his team (although Pele missed the ‘62 Final due to injury).

Manager, Zagallo, managed Brazil a few times, importantly from 1970-1974, and previously played as a forward/winger for club sides, Flamengo and Botafogo. He’s now aged 91; Pele is 82.

Their salsa beat of sublime football continued on through the 1980s and 1990s and possibly 1982 was, with attacking talents such as Socrates and Zico, a missed opportunity to add to their current haul of (currently) being 5 x winners (’58, ‘62,’70, ‘94 & ‘02).

In world football competitions, it appears there’s been a few hotly contested and major matches against the Azure blue of Italy.

World Cup ‘78

Argentina ‘78. Videla was President of Argentina, and his corrupt nation was playing in a World Cup Final, which they won, 3-1, beating the Netherlands, after extra time.

Controversially, Argentina had thrashed Peru 6-0 in Group B to qualify for the Final, going into the match knowing they had to score 4 more goals than Group A rivals, Brazil. However, there was no need to cry for Argentina, the hosts had won, covering themselves in tickertape if not glory.

Rhys Richard’s book also goes into extra time, explaining both the political field and football field as seemingly ruled over by a dictator. On the pitch, it was the long-haired, skilful Kempes for Argentina who - complete with film star looks -  scored 6 to finish overall top scorer.

WE MADE THEM ANGRY by Tom Brogan

The jigsaw puzzle that is the British Isles was almost completed in Spain in 1982. England, Northern Ireland and Scotland all qualified, with “Ron’s 22″ dumped out despite not losing a single game - three wins, two draws. Unfortunately, this time, Greenwood’s squad, didn’t get it right.

Scotland, according to writer Tom Brogan, made the Brazilians angry. David Narey had the audacity to fire in a wonder goal from long range on the 18th minute in a Group 6 game, which stung the Brazilians to fire back four and win outright. In the end, Italy lifted the trophy for (then) the 3rd time.

The Scottish spirit, fostered in qualifying by the strong-man tactics of Jock Stein, is fantastically depicted in a super colour photo in the book showing top players Souness, Robertson and Archibald in an embracing formation of (shirt numbers) 4-11-8, taken just after Robertson had scored against Israel, in 1981.

Scotland were destined not to win and be, as “born winner” Ally MacLeod had previously described the Argentinian summit as being in ‘78, ‘Top Of The World’, but the squad did reach No.5 on ‘Top Of The Pops’ with their football record, ‘We Have A Dream’. By World Cup ‘86, Scotland had another hit charted, a ‘Big Trip To Mexico’.

IN THE HEAT OF THE MIDDAY SUN by Steven Scragg

“The boy Lineker” cannoned-in six goals for England (making him Top Scorer) plus “The Hand Of God” being just some highlights in the Mexico sunshine. As in ‘82, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland all qualified. This time, it was the Northern Irish who faced Brazil in their Group D and Pat Jennings wearing a blue jersey in goal, aged 41. Three were put past him, including one strike from some distance by Josimer. The match proved to be Jenning’s last international game.

Argentina defeated West Germany 3-2 in the final, leaving England manager, Bobby Robson, wondering what might have been had they got beyond the head, hands and feet of “superstar” Diego Maradona - scoring 2 to England's 1 in the Quarter-Final. Scotland finished rock bottom of Group E. Steven Scragg concludes, “Denmark still should have won it though!”

USA’94 by Matthew Evans

Nine venues in nine host cities with “shooting” in Dallas. July 9, 1994, eventual winners, Brazil, beat the Netherlands 3-2 in The Cotton Bowl in front of 63,500.

As Matthew Evans writes in Chapter 15: “The Dutch were enjoying their second consecutive World Cup following a barren period in the 1980s after runners-up places in the 1974 and 78 tournaments. They had progressed as winners of their group despite a defeat to neighbours Belgium in Orlando and swatted the Republic Of Ireland aside in the last 16″.

No England of course, who failed to qualify (do I not LIKE that!) under Graham Taylor but record receipts meant the American’s Captains of industry were - like the theme tune - in “Gloryland”, even though Captain Dunga lifted the golden trophy for the Brazilians after beating the Italians on pens with a crowd of 94,194.
