this is an ask for Fanfic Writer Friday even though it isn't friday anymore for me. what's your favorite character depiction of dirk strider, and do you think you aim to imitate it when you write him, or do you try to blaze your own path in characterization?

Hm. Well. My favorite depiction of Dirk Strider is honestly the one in my head? Aside from that--maaaaybe, I think The Run and Go kind of gave me some inspiration along the way, but even then I kinda feel like my Dirk doesn’t really...match up with any others in a way that I would call it imitation, even though I do enjoy several other people’s interpretations. I think we all just ended up focusing on different aspects of canon!Dirk’s personality. I have a hard time conveying his more assholish or philosopher traits, but for better or worse I nail the distracted self absorbed well meaning but failing at it sibling vibe haha.

an ask for Fanfic Writer Friday: what's Your writing process like?

hi yena! (again) sorry for sending you an ask so fast!! i just was like, u know, nearby haha

I feel like never in my life have i followed the proper writing process, in part because i’m a huge procrastinator (not on purpose obviously just you know that adhd brain haha) and because i don’t have the patience for a proper multi-draft sequence!

i also rarely write things in order but! if we are talking about fics that are currently in progress, it’s a little easier to explain and a lot less haphazard! (edit: trying to put it into words has proved that’s not true but i’ll try anyway!)

so basically, by the end of the previous chapter, i know (generally) what i want to happen next (if i hadn’t planned that out several chapters ago). I actually have to keep a list of “things i want to resolve” for rng specifically, because it is so long (i also have a notebook of “spark notes” as it were, just in case i don’t want to reread the whole thing haha).

depending on what is going to happen depends on the POV (at least in multi-pov fics duh), and from there i can usually kind of scrumple together a vague set of events in my head.

after that i just like, write whatever feels a good place to start! sometimes it is near the end, sometimes it’s in the middle! a lot of the times i have to write the beginning after i finish most of the chapter, but usually, i don’t write the END of the chapter until it feels right so! yes. that. 

i also write mostly on my phone (i have been doing this since 2011 when i still had a physical keyboard lmao), because then i am somewhere comfy and like, it’s not such a big deal i guess? sometimes in bed at 2 am (lots of times in bed at 2am) or literally sitting in my chair in front of my computer. it’s just easier for me to concentrate!

then whenever i am done, i prop my lil phone up next to my laptop and re-type the entire thing into a word document! i that way i can screen most errors, or find funky-sounding sentences. a lot of the time i end up adding instead of subtracting but also who cares because, it’s fanfiction and the INDULGENCE is high. i very rarely change anything big, but i still like to do it this way even though it’s time-consuming, because it helps w pacing and just makes the whole thing feel more natural. also, because re-reading isjust embarrassing.

then i put it in a googly doc, to do an actual spellcheck and also because then it formats the paragraphs for ao3, then i open the googly doc on my phone, put it back into my writing app, fix the spacing on pesterlogs n stuff,

then batter up, ao3, formatting, etc but i don’t think that counts as an actual writing process so much as it is about editing!

the thing i most remember about your writing is how Full it feels. of emotion, mostly, but like how fulfilling it is to simply read. how i can recall one scene, and the rest of the story is just as bright as that one scene because it's all equally Full of that same brightness. you work hard to be the best you can be, and it shows.

10. how do you do your researches?

I mostly keep wikis open! Specifically for my writingrecently, which is homestuck ofc, I also have various significant events in thecomics bookmarked and or open in separate tabs so I can refer back to theconversations, flashes, and just generally keep a good grasp on order of eventsand details of circumstances I’m referencing back to. I also have similarconversations opened so I can reread certain characters to try and get a handleon their voices, although eventually that ends up shifting away from the canonvoice and into the voice of my particular AU version of that character becausethey evolve through the course of the fic itself.

11. do you listen to music when writing?

Yes! @0dsi made me a playlist based on Defragmentation, sowhen I am at home and trying to get in the groove I listen to that. Sometimes I’llfind general “study” or “concentration” type music if I’m having troublefocusing. At work when I write I don’t listen to music, not because I can’t,but because I need to be aware of my surroundings!

12. favorite place to write

Well I only have two places. At Home. And At Work. Okay,maybe three, which is On A Laptop Not At Home.

I’m not really sure if I have a favorite. I’m mostproductive, I think, At Work, purely because I have very little ability to bedistracted by youtube/the internet in general. But of course, it has it’sdownsides, in the fact that if I do have actualwork to do, I can’t write.

13. hardest character to write

So far? Getting started with Roxy. She was oddlyintimidating , and I stressed over writing her for probably about a month. It’sgetting easier now, but I’d say any newcharacter is likely going to end up in a similar boat. Extra difficulty pointsgo to angry, mean characters because I just…find it very hard to be mean XD andif I can’t come up with an internal justification for it, I find it difficult towrite.

14. easiest character to write

Dave/peta by a long shot. I just love the way they ramble,although Davepeta gives me trouble with Cat Puns, and Dave (or, well, canondave) has a crudeness to his humor that I have trouble with since I’m notactually a fan of crude humor. It isn’t an issue now because of Dave’s agethough, so when I write him I mostly just let my brain wander and ramble andhave fun with stupid extended metaphors.

15. hardest verse to write

I’m not sure I have enough experiences in different ‘versesto really comment on this one. I usually only have one or two on-going fics at atime, so I’m gonna change ‘verse to fandom. The hardest fandom I’ve written foris, ironically, Homestuck! It’s just so big and intimidating, and while it’svery malleable, it also has MANY things you gotta keep in mind if you wannakeep the setting and not go raring off into entirely AU-land. Which is fine ifthat’s what you wanna do, but I tend to enjoy canon-divergence over straight upAUs.

16. easiest verse to write

Going off my ‘verse is Fandom stipulation: Final Fantasy VIIwithout a doubt. I just have so much history with it and have done so muchtheory crafting over the years, whenever I cycle back into a fanfic for thatfandom, it always feels like it’s coming home.

17. favorite AU to write

I don’t think I’ve written an AU, actually. All my fics tendto be canon-divergent, or at least rooted enough in canon that I’d hesitate toclassify them as an alternate universe. What can I say, part of the reason I cometo fanfic is to play with the setting and plot as well as the characters.

18. favorite pairing to write

Gimme the diamonds ok. Hearts can gtfo.

(jk they are fine I just don’t think I grasp romance wellenough to pull it off)

19. favorite fandom to write

Homestuck, probably. Since that’s the only thing I’m writingin and it and 2nd person has ruined me I’m not sure I’ll be able towrite anything else again LOL.

20. favorite character to write

Hmmm… I’m not sure. I enjoy all three of my main POVcharacters for different reasons. I suppose I tend to look forward to having Davepeta chapters the most, but that might just bebecause they are fairly rare in comparison.

2. Fic you spent the least time on: I don’t know any of my older stuff, so I’m gonna have to go with Divide by Zero because I’m pretty sure I cranked that out in a manic haze of Dave trying to prove to myself that I can, in fact, write homestuck 

3. Longest fic: To no surprise, it’s Defragmentation, which is currently sitting pretty at 70 chapters and 299,140 words and I’m still only barely in the *first arc* of *ACT TWO* out of three.

4. Shortest fic: Monofell: When Only Stones Remain which was a gift ficlet written for @pc-doodle‘s undertale AU. This one clocks in at around 702 words.

8. Fave fic you wrote: I love both Defrag and Ersatz Abyss pretty close to even actually. Defrag because it’s my self-indulgent mess and because Ersatz is ending up that same way just focused differently and Hal is heckin’ fun to write.

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I have a few sort of director’s cut changes I wish I could do to Defrag to maybe work on the pacing of early chapters and clean up some plot threads that are a little tangled since I didn’t figure out what I was doing until a decent ways in. Aside from that, there’s a Detective Conan fic sitting on my FF.net account I *was* working on rewriting, but I think I lost the thumbdrive :( This was before I changed to google doc-ing everything.

10. Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: 

AKA The last thing I wrote before doing this:  It’s a phantom limb except it’s a phantom everything and you lose so much time as you try to remember what to do, pushing the information through your panicking brain--that you no longer have, it’s all ones and zeroes and electrical impulses up in here baby--and charting the wrecked pathways that once made up your home. Even so you’re still spinning, running, a mouse in a maze with only the vaguest whiff of cheese to guide them.

You think he won’t, for a moment, that he’ll let you get away with perhaps your oddest and least comfortable trait, but somewhere in there, he changes his mind. His fingers twist in the cords that bind the lights together, tight enough that they squeak in protest when he finally snaps, “Just spit it out already!”
