Jinhwa Jang

I then researched Jinhwa Jang, who’s work I absolutely loved. I loved her clashing neon colour scheme and I felt she really linked to Liam Wong’s nightlife photography. Whereas Liam Wong’s photographs feel warm and inviting, Jinhwa Jang’s work feels more sinister and ominous due. Her style is very graphic and blocky but she adds texture in some spaces which creates a chaotic and colourful finish. Her work predominantly considers a dystopian future of living in space which is portrayed in a comic book style. Her work evokes the sense of overpopulation, a theme which I am looking to explore. Her pieces always have one main character in the focus and usually others in the background which creates this sense of anonymity of the lone figure among a sea of people. Her work is inspired by her life growing up in busy cities. She says in an interview: “I like to draw people passing by in urban landscapes, and I hope audiences feel curious about their stories but also feel as someone in the crowds.” (Angelos, A. 2021, source: https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/jinhwa-jang-illustration-090421).
