The Sketchbooks

Just some info for you all, so my tagging system makes a little more sense.

This is a comic that has been almost entirely drawn in whichever sketchbook that I had on hand at the time, sort of unintentionally at first, so of course it'll be a little bit more unorthodox in its... pretty much everything, sure. It's not even drawn in any linear fashion. It's an accidental sketchbook webcomic, going with the flow.

Without further ado,

01: small beginnings April 2017 - June 2017 This sure was where everything started!! Weirdly accurate, too. I swear it wasn't intentional.

This wasn't even a proper sketchbook, it was more of a notepad, and as of last time I went through it, it was falling apart due to the glue literally not holding it together anymore. But yeah - Morten shows up for the first time in this. Bat followed soon after.

02: the pink one June 2017 - April 2018 A lot of firsts in this one - the beginnings of Einarr, Helena and Rune, for example.

And yeah, it came with printed flower and butterfly graphics inside. I just grabbed whatever sketchbook I had, man. And once I had started using one, I was not going to let go until it was finished. No exceptions.

03: teddy bear April 2018- June 2018 Just three months!! Probably because it only had 50 (100) pages in it. but yeah. Speedy bear.

Einarr started becoming a character in this one, going from just being Bat's mysterious sire who died, to this strange old beardless viking who constantly chopped his hair off for some reason. I mean, he definitely still had a way to go before he became... himself?

04: linnanmäki July 2018 - October 2018 Another somewhat speedy one! Bought in Finland, incidentally.

This is also where something resembling longform comics started to form. Some rather significant early characterization happening in this one.

05: moomin October 2018 - April 2019 So just about half a year. A lot of shorter comics in this one. I really love the cover of it.

Not sure what else to say. This one feels like kind of the transitional phase of my books.

06: duct taped spine April 2019 - September 2021 OHOHOH THIS IS A THICK ONE..... This one lasted two and a half years. TWO AND A HALF YEARS. IT WAS LITERALLY FALLING APART BY THE END.

This sketchbook had way too many pages for its quality - it split apart by the time I got to the middle, the spine fell off, it has been absolutely wrecked to bits from my frequent usage and I love it.

So yeah, this one was pretty good. A lot of the longer main stories start in this one. It's also causing me issues when it's the only book here with square pages.

07: the green one September 2021 - November 2023 Two years also, though the speed was a little halted by my bad phone habits and also the way I've gotten increasingly more thorough with my art!

For sure one of my favorites, especially art-wise ♡

By the end, the spine had fallen off, but unlike the previous one, it still wasn't completely falling apart. So that's nice. Around the time it was about to finish, I also drew on its cover - it represents the one story arc that just kinda slowly ran through nearly the whole book.

08: navy blue November 2023 - now

The current one! Same brand and thickness as the previous green one. Will be interesting to see if it ends up being any faster or slower. It has had some good comics so far!

Description: Ashley, in her down time, can be found wearing a combination of the following types of clothing: straight, mom or slim jeans, plain coloured short and long sleeved shirts, flannel shirts (got that style from her dad), leather jacket, heavy fur lined winter coat, sneakers or boots.

She got into the habit of wearing non-branded clothes throughout her teens, picked up from her mother; the only item of clothing she own that has any sort of picture/brand on it is a baseball cap.

Her features are an even balance between her mother and father, her eye shape resembles that of Jodie, whereas the colour is an exact match of Frank's. She has the same nose as her mother, too. Although, most people say she looks more like Frank, until she then stands next to Jodie. Then when she stands in the middle of her parents, people can't decide which on she resembles more.

However, most faces she pulls, the facial gestures, are very much Frank. You can definitely tell she is her father's daughter, lol.

Ashley's hair is very straight, black-brown in colour like Frank's and it straight cut at her shoulders with a middle parting. She keeps it long enough that she can comfortably tie it back without any strays falling into her face.

Biography

Ashley was born in 1983 to Frank Woods and Jodie Hall, who would then later marry to become Mr and Mrs Woods. Her childhood wasn't without its challenges, though it was the best that both of her parents could offer given their line of work and the dangers they faced. Ashley cannot really remember ever wanting for anything.

Though her memories are not great surrounding this, she knows that there was a time during her childhood that she had to be heavily protected, though she was never made privy as to why. Jodie always said that it didn't matter, that it was over with, and there was no need to worry about that anymore. Ashley was always curious throughout her teens of the subject, but Jodie would often ask her to stop. It's only when she's older that Jodie and Frank explain about Jodie's past and a man named Keith.

When old enough, Ashley had made the decision that she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her parents and pursue a career in the military and spent a lot of time weighing up her options; initially, she was met with both of her parents trying their best to convince her to choose something else to do with her life, but she was dead set on it. Jodie relented first, Frank did so later. Both knew she would only do as she wished anyway. Once Ashley had looked into all possibilities, she had settled on wishing to join the Navy, the interest sparked after David had joined. Given that she had a lifelong interest in aviation, planes and fighter jets, Ashley knew where her path within the Navy would take her. Her aim was to become a fighter pilot (maybe she also saw Top Gun, which made the job look even cooler when she was a teen).

The path to becoming a Navy fighter pilot was long, arduous but definitely worth it. She gained a degree in engineering, then moved through the required training. It may have taken her years, but those years were spent going through regimented, gruelling training to become a well-rounded, adaptable, skilled fighter pilot.

Later on in her career, she goes through more training to become an instructor, teaching the next generation of pilots.

I finally listened to Cupcakke's album. I know people love to harp on her obscene lyrics and humor but can I just say her instrumentals are one of a fucking kind? Some notables off the album: "Water Balloon," "Aura," "Backstage Pass," "Rock Paper Scissors," "Dora," and "Dementia." If you like these, maybe give "Catman" by TeaMarr as well.

"Skyscraper Starlight" De De Mouse. City Pop sensibilities with a modern groove factor.

"Chasing Low Vibrations" Foster the People. Not as good as previous stuff but... idk... what it is what it says on the tin. Low vibrational.

"Corazon" & "Switch It (ft Cakes da Killa, GAWD). Glossy, disco-y, and MADE to get you on the fucking dance floor! Glad to have accidentally found the latter song through Cakes Da Killa and their song "Da Dat Baby" with its gay, flashy rap. If you like those, PIVOT WITH ME, and try out "Nowhere" by Shotaro Aoyama.

"Kiss" Penicillin. Just some Visual Kei rep on this list. The sound is very nostalgic for Jrock, at least vocally. Like 1998 vibes.

"Low Threshold" Navy Blue. A rap that feels like the intersection between a confessional and a sermon.

Looking at my "Share with Tumblr" playlist... this is longer than expected so uh... kpop dumping ground?? Which is bad because these are all WILDLY different genres but... I feel like the same group of people will give them a chance so:

I don't think its their best album, by a long shot, and I miss how weird they were but Glass Animals did have a bit of a comeback from that HORRIBLE lead single. Notables: "How I learned to Love the Bomb," "Wonderful Nothing," "whatthehellishappening?" Indie pop / alt rock.

"Super Breath" Karen 0 & Danger Mouse. MTV Teen Wolf era ass song. For the peeps who liked older Metric but also MTV's curated playlists for their teen dramas.

"Stupid (can't run from the urge" underscores. If hyperpop intrigued you but kind of scared you, if you ran back to like... madeon but gayly... this is the song for you.

If you like previous recs of Alex Anwandter's music, give "Mi Corazón" by Tango Astral a shot. Similar vibes, perhaps more basic.

Kinda generic rock song but "Delusion:All" One OK Rock scratches an itch. Still don't think they've ever done better than "Clock Strikes" but I don't follow them much

Precious babies - I’m sure nothing bad will ever happen to them.

(ID: Reference sheet for my Kirby OCs, Para Dee and Bow Dee. Visually, Para is a young Waddle Dee with light orange fur, a pale beige face, peach cheek blush, brown eyes, and yellow feet. He wears large round glasses taped on the sides of his head and a green-and-brown plaid bowtie, and there is a little curl of fur swooping up from his forehead. Just their kid versions at the moment, but there might be teen and adult refs for them in the future depending on how much story stuff I get around to showcasing. I got a couple other characters in mind for the Childhood Friends AU as well, but they’re still deep in concept stages, so no refs for them yet, haha. Also, if you guys want refs for young Dedede and Meta, lemme know.

Some facts about Para Dee:

-His name is just a shortened version of “Parasol Waddle Dee” - in addition to reflecting his Copy Ability, he has yet to find another name that he feels fits him better, so he keeps it as a nickname for much of his childhood and beyond.

-He is around DDD and Meta’s age, and a little older than Bow.

-He is the middle child in a pretty big family. While he cares for them all very dearly, being crammed in a veritable mosh pit of siblings gets to be a bit much for him sometimes. He hangs out with DDD and co. partially to get away for a while, partially because he was probably going to get roped in with them anyway.

-He shares a deep love of books and learning with Meta, though his interests lean more towards math, science, and mechanical engineering, with space being perhaps his biggest hyperfixation. Seriously, this lad can go on about nebulae and starships and quantum mechanics for hours if you let him.

-Para has an unfortunate habit of “Um, actually”-ing people about topics he knows (or thinks he knows) well, annoying his friends at best and making him an easy target for local bullies at worse…

-Unlike his friends, Para is not a very active or adventurous soul. He is easily startled, chronically un-athletic, and unlikely to harm a fly let alone another person. He much prefers quieter activities like reading and stargazing, especially from the comfort of his own home. The only physical activity he seems to enjoy is rollerskating, though all he does is leisurely roll around the park while watching the others fail at doing cool tricks.

-Though reluctant about most things, Para is especially afraid of heights. Even being slightly up off the ground has him scrambling to cling to the nearest solid object (usually DDD, who has probably picked him up, possibly with the intent to throw).

-While his friends go on about their lofty goals of being kings and knights, Para’s ambitions are relatively lax. He’d like to go to university off-world to study rocket science when he’s older, maybe even learn to build them one day, but that’s about as big as his dreams get, and even those could be narrowed down further to just seeing a real interstellar starship in person. Sometimes, he imagines flying through space on one, seeing all those stars he loves so much up close and personal, even if the idea of being up that high makes his little heart stutter in his chest…

Some facts about Bow Dee:

-She is named, unsurprisingly, for the bow on her head, which she has been wearing since she was a baby and practically refuses to remove without a lot of coaxing (stars help anyone who tries to take it off by force). She keeps both the name and the bow for much of her childhood, though she might not keep them (or her pronouns) forever…

-She is the baby of the group (a couple years younger than DDD, Meta, and Para).

-She comes from a relatively small family, taken care of by her two (extremely cool) moms and an older brother who is often away at school or out with his friends (usually to get away from his "obnoxious baby sister"). As a result, she is on her own more than she cares to be - hence why she follows DDD and his friends around like an overeager puppy all the time.

-She thinks Meta is the coolest person ever from the moment she meets him. She hovers around him constantly whenever the gang is together (to his slight annoyance), sometimes even mimicking his poses and gestures without meaning to (usually while Meta is mimicking DDD the same way).

-Bow was born with a Copy Ability atypical for Waddle Dees, that being Water. At this point in her life, the most she can do is manifest bubbles at will and maybe manipulate small puddles if she focuses hard enough. Sometimes, in moments of high stress, she can summon powerful jets of water from nearby rivers, lakes, or even pipes beneath the ground (something that has definitely gotten her into trouble more than once). She will get the hang of her powers with enough time and practice, especially as her interests in oceans, sea life, and sailing grow over time…

-Bow finds it hard to sit still and loses focus easily if she’s not already invested in something (much to her teachers’ frustration). But when she is invested in a task, she will go all in on it until either her energy runs out or something else grabs her attention.

-Bow loves sports and most outdoor activities, constantly bouncing between favorites (though she probably enjoys swimming and surfing the most) and getting super competitive when teams are involved (much to DDD and Meta’s delight, and Para’s dismay).

-On that note, she is the only one of the four who has ever successfully landed a kickflip without getting hurt (at least after the first time).

-Bow - who often forgets that she is the smallest person in the room - will challenge anything to a fight if it makes her angry enough. Literally, she will look a feral Gigant Edge directly in the helmet and put up her little fists like she has any chance at winning. The only exception to this is bugs - she will perish before letting a bug anywhere near here (something DDD never lets her live down).

If you’re wondering how that works a basic explanation is: I can skate because the rink is like a full body ice pack, my skates are firm and support ankles, it relies mostly on momentum, and I spin on my left leg (I have stability problems with my right). Even with this I have to take extremely frequent breaks and can’t skate as much as I used too; but it is still my sport and is literally the only activity I can do and have freedom in my body while doing without (most) limitations I face off ice. Traintober | Day 4 - Devious

Green Arrow finds that Diesel likes having him around to listen to him, especially since he's mute and can't divulge his secrets. But what will happen when Arrow regains his voice? Takes place during Young Iron - Green with Envy, when Green Arrow has his voicebox stolen.

“Why hello there new engine!” 

Green Arrow nervously looked around to find a black Class 08 leering at him. Said Class 08 was completely black, unlike the usual members of his class who had yellow hazard stripes. He frowned and narrowed his eyes in response.

“No need for that look, I’m just trying to be friendly!” The Diesel grinned but Green Arrow didn’t believe him. 

The V2 was aware of this certain Class 08’s reputation in the Railway Series books and stared at him in disbelief.

“Oh right, you’re mute,” the Diesel suddenly realised and Arrow began scowling at him. “Apologises, apologies I meant no offence.”

Green Arrow simply hissed steam and hurried off in a cloud of steam, his displeasure evident.

Not dissuaded, the Class 08 quickly sped after him.

“Ah I’ve upset you,” Diesel quickly lamented. “A deep shame, I was insensitive, allow me to introduce myself, I am Diesel.”

Green Arrow snorted and rolled his eyes in response. To his surprise the Class 08 was not offended.

“I like being called just Diesel, it’s better than just having a number,” Diesel proudly exclaimed but Green Arrow looked doubtful. “We all can’t be named after companies like you are friend.”

Arrow decided to ignore the Class 08 as he made his way to his next job yet still Diesel insisted on following him. 

“I’ve seen how the others treat you and I think it’s terrible, just terrible,” The Class 08 lamented. “A fine standing engine such as yourself being subjected to such discrimination.”

More than anything Green Arrow wanted to tell the Diesel to back off but his lack of voice made that hard. He was however able to wheeshed steam in the Diesel’s face and sped up down the line.

The Diesel shouted at him but he did not hear him as he put as much distance between the both of them.

Over the next few months, the diesel continuously approached him whenever he saw him. Green Arrow didn’t really understand but Diesel seemed to find some sort of comfort in just talking to him while he rolled around or moved to jobs. He seemed to look forward to or even crave having someone to complain to.

Maybe he wanted company, maybe he was genuinely trying to be a friend but Green Arrow didn’t have the ability to tell him to go away for the longest time.

On the plus side, Diesel gave him an insight into how the other engines interacted. How Diesel often spied James and Edward behind the sheds when they both had spare time. How Gordon liked to sneak out to the Docks to talk to the massive cruise ships that came by. Or how Henry liked to spend time with Peter Sam whenever he was near Sodor's Narrow Gauge Railway.

He was learning a lot from the Diesel and he didn’t have to prompt or try to provoke a single word out of him. 

Maybe that was why he continued to be mute around the Diesel, even when his voice box had been returned to him. 

He didn’t want to spoil Diesel’s little exercises in talking to him, knowing that he found solace in the silent steam engine. 

“Hello, Mr Arrow!” Came the voice of the small navy blue tank engine sat near cranky on the Docks. “It’s good to see you!”

He liked the Well Tank Engine. He wasn’t like any of the other engines on the island who held a grudge against him and seemed always happy to see Arrow. It was a nice reprieve when it felt like the entire island, bar Edward, was against him.

“I’ve forgotten your name sorry,” Green Arrow apologised to the little engine.

“That’s a’rite guv! Name’s Sonny!” The Tank engine grinned, not even offended by his forgetfulness. 

“Sonny! Right! Hello to you too!” Green Arrow grinned back.

Sonny’s attention was caught by something behind him.

“Ay-O how goes it Diesel?!” Sonny greeted his friend but the Diesel didn’t answer.

Green Arrow could feel the glare of the Class 08 searing into his boiler as he came up beside him. The Diesel stopped, gave an annoyed ‘humph’ and sped off leaving a very confused Sonny.

“What was that about ay?” The Well Tank engine grunted confused. 

Green Arrow said nothing and only stared after the retreating Class 08.

"So you can talk now huh?" Diesel oiled at Arrow as he found the Class 08 near Harwick Station. 

"Not a lot of people approve of me having my voice back," Green Arrow admitted to Diesel. "I figured you would be upset."

"Upset?" Diesel scoffed, feigning his boastful attitude. "Why would I be upset?"

"Because maybe you thought that you wouldn't have someone to listen to your grievances any more," Arrow pointed out and Diesel glared at him.

"You've probably gone and told all my secrets to all your steamie friends!" Diesel sneered and Arrow gave a snort.

"What friends? I don't have friends, you see how the others treat me," Green Arrow argued and Diesel looked thoughtful. 

"I suppose that he true, hehe, guess I had nothing to worry about," Diesel piped up. 

Diesel started to oil away but Arrow spoke up again. 

"You can still talk to me if you want, you actually helped me get a gauge on everyone else on this island you know," he offered. "I appreciate that."

Diesel stared at him and then smirked.

"Two outcasts just hanging out," he oiled and Arrow smirked in return. "But I'm not your friend, Steamie. I just liked to complain at you because you couldn't respond."

"Perhaps, but still, the offer is there," Arrow stood firm. 

Diesel stared at him then humphed before meandering away. Without another world. 

A few weeks later, the Class 08 was back to complaining at Arrow as if nothing happened, and Arrow was glad for it knowing that he was making Diesel at least a little bit happier.

In the dressing studio, you sit and stare, on a button-based stool, heel on the footrest, elbow on your knee, chin on your hand. Thinking thoughts. Your cutting-edge stare sending the boy in front of you statue-still, his back needle-straight. It was like he was barely breathing.

"...You don't like the navy, do you?" You point out the heaps of deep blue radiating off of his cape.

Huening Kai nods slowly.

"Yeah, no, let's ditch the navy."

Scrapping the typical armour down the laundry shoot, you opted for something less… scary. Something that didn’t scream ‘I’m am half transformer with fourteen working rifles in my pelvis and canons in my pectorals’ or ‘COMMANDER KNIGHT HERE AT YOUR SERVICE, BOW BEFORE ME.’

You took a long look at his shoulders, the broad of his chest, his hinged waistline. In your mind, an outfit comes together...

A shimmery silver-white blouse made of silk with transparent polymer buttons, a white fur collar draping the sides of his shoulders with a matcha-green tint on its ends, a bulky brown woven belt over a pair of formal white trousers. To still achieve that knight look, on the first half of his body, light inked sketches of vines lining his chest and shoulder plating would be attached over his shoulders under the fur collar, and the second half of his body would be covered in metal plating.

This could work.

This could absolutely work.

Huening Kai wanted to explode into a million different pieces and never be put together again.

In this palace he’s rarely ever been inside of, in this small studio filled with fabrics and timeless clothes and short ceilings where the air squeezes in on him, you’ve been so dangerously close to the poor boy for the past half an hour, measuring and readjusting his breastplate and the process was so grueling so torturous so heavenly all at the same time and he can’t take it anymore.

It didn’t help at all that you were his designer.

Taehyun wouldn’t have ever guessed it either, you in the place of a professional seamstress, at sixteen? He knows his bestie is super talented-gorgeous-magnificent-show-stopping-jaw-dropping but what are the odds?

The entire time it was just the two of you and Huening Kai didn’t know why that made him feel weird and mushy and explosive, as if the both of you have never hung out one on one before.

Perhaps all those other times were different.

Because he was a knight-in-training.

He was at the palace grounds training for his future and you, too, were at the palace grounds for seemingly no reason at all.

He’d stare at the sidelines hoping you’d watch and of course you do, you always do, even when the heat threatens to bake you alive, you’d tail along a crochet kit or embroidery supplies and watch him and he’d catch you staring and then his insides start feeling weird but he just can’t look away.

And even when he wasn’t training, he’d mess around with you and Taehyun in the palace gardens or village streets as children do. You’d navigate Huening Kai to places he neverknew existed, give him free cookies because your mother didn’t mind it, watch as Taehyun rode his pegasi-filled carriages home because the sun is setting and it’s curfew hours.

Countless of times, on the sidewalks at golden hour, just the two of you in opened space, talking and talking and talking.

Huening Kai crying over tough training days and you taking sharp breaths whenever the boy involuntarily breaks down.

It felt like ages ago since Huening Kai last shed a teardrop.

Huening Kai snaps back to reality.

He isn’t outside, in the village, where the space is open and a buzz.

This… This was different.

The small room provided little to no privacy.

Your hand is on his chest (technically his breastplate that was over his blouse that was directly over his chest but tomato tomahto, it is what it is) pushing forward, wincing at the material once you’ve realized, again, it just won’t fit.

“Kai, you’re so big…”

Huening Kai nearly lost it. “Excuse me?”

“Oh no it’s just… you’ve grown. Like really grown.” You pulled the plating off of Huening Kai like a rabbit playing tug of war with the leafy end of a carrot.

“Is that a bad thing?”

“No, not at all. It’s a good thing, actually, ‘cause like, finally, you’re not so tiny and miniature anymore.” Heaving a sigh, you set the metal plating down, reaching for another much bigger piece.

You chuckled. Internally. Like, a brainfart.

Why on Earth would he think growing up is a bad thing?

For the past six years, Huening Kai was literally a full-sized head shorter than you.

He was and still is very timid, though.

In a kennel of bulldogs, he’s the only chihuahua.

In a sea of stars, he burns the brightest.

Did you not notice? These past few years, did you not see him passing over your shoulder? Did you not catch the arch of his nose sharpening? His broadening shoulders, the muscle he’s gained over the years? Did he get a perm???

“I’m catching onto you and Taehyun, aren’t I?” Huening Kai muttered as you placed yet another breastplate over his chest.

You slouched over, relief flooding you.

It fits perfectly.

A hint of a smile swatches across your cheeks, and perhaps it was an odd, uncommon thing to feel at the age of sixteen, but, nostalgia blooms in your chest and you wonder if Huening Kai feels the same way. “I will actually cry if you outgrow the both of us, but then again, I think you're already doing that.”
