I really wasn't asking everyone to understand the mechanics of fabric—I was trying to convey that there are real, valid, physical reasons that pattern instructions tell you to fold the fabric a certain way, and to put the pattern pieces on that folded fabric in a certain way, and ignoring those instructions can lead to predictable problems that can be avoided by following the folding and layout instructions.

You don't have to understand the physical properties of warp versus weft in woven fabric, just know that the people making the pattern do understand, and have done all the calculations for you.

I am seeing so many people respond to my post with sentiments like "I do not understand this no matter how hard I try so I am afraid to sew" and no! That's not my intention! My intention is to say that the instructions are there for reason, so please follow them! It will not make your sewing instantly perfect, but it will cut down on a lot of issues that you don't even realize are issues!

And I'm not asking for unquestioning trust in the patterns, either--I gave all of the extra information so you know there are reasons, and they're not arbitrary.

And if you want to start sewing without using patterns, of course you can do that. But. Using patterns can help teach you things about sewing that you might not even realize are things at all

is there any intuitive and non annoying way to input non english characters (including just accented latin letters like éěè etc) with a qwerty keyboard? the best way I'd seen was the one ubuntu does where you can do like alt + u + " = ü and other similarly intuitive stuff for a whole bunch of characters that arent on the qwerty keyboard but now that I'm trying to become literate in mandarin too i wanna be able to write chinese characters too
