if  anybody  in  camp  understood  the  struggle  to  socialize  -  it  would  be  silas,  no  doubt.  constantly  struggling  to  keep  up  with  the  ever-chatty  mass  of  youngsters,  silas  actually  could  embrace  a  good,  comfortable  stretch  of  silence  between  two  parties.  silence  didn't  bother  him  unless  it  followed  awkward  conversation.

he,  too,  was  trying  to  insert  him  into  everyday  life  at  camp.  so  he  made  himself  stop  training  for  a  little  while  to  mingle.  mingling  -  the  bane  of  his  existence.  growing  up  in  the  environment  he  did,  mingling  had  been  mandatory  even  though  he  usually  vehemently  refused  to.  he  still  did.

but  a  cookout  was  the  perfect  opportunity  to  combine  something  he  hated  with  something  he  loved,  while  potentially  bringing  home  a  win.  winning  was  addictive  &  silas  caught  the  virus  early  on;  competition  a  sure-fire  way  of  pulling  him  into  any  sort  of  activity.  that  it  was  cooking,  which  he  enjoyed  greatly  ..was  a  bonus.

his  teammate?  he  thought  they  were  on  a  somewhat  good  standing  after  lars  shared  tea  with  him  &  accepted  silas'  own  food  creation  as  bribery  for  an  introduction  that  lacked  ..  a  lot  a  good  introduction  should've  had.  but  he  got  the  feeling  he  couldn't  be  sure.  silas  knew  he  was  differently  -  others  focused  on  the  now,  but  he  ...  well,  while  he  didn't  really  remember  names  well,  silas  remembered  those  he  fought  alongside  with  &  what  they  did.

lars  was  not  a  stranger  to  him  at  all.  the  opposite  could  apparently  not  be  said  for  the  son  of  winter.  "we're  gonna  beat  the  satyr  kids."  that  wasn't  negotiable.  "we  speed  datin'  or  cookin',  lars?"  little  chuckle,  followed  by  the  shake  of  his  head.  "silas.  i  shared  my  food  with  ya  an'  you  shared  your  tea  with  me."  he  didn't  remember,  huh?  "atlantis?"  well,  that  stung  just  a  little.  but  it  was  fine.  they hadn't actually spoken much, or at all during most trips they were sent on & silas wasn't the sharing kind in the first place. "'s  fine.  you  know  how  to  cook?  what're  you  good  at?"  silas  would  be  good  in  all  directions.  well,  most  of  them.

his definition of socialization involved long stretches of silence.

others would argue it to be less so. and though it was like pulling teeth to confess, perhaps they were right about that. from the looks of the old stamping grounds that the past lars had, his social skills were buried six feet under. in fact, they had been reclaimed by earth and dirt. fossilized, even. so when the campers scraped together an impromptu cooking competition, lars saw it as a good opportunity to ‘mingle’ with the others. that was one of his therapist’s favorite terms: you have to mingle. you have to put yourself out there. stupid. but he squared his shoulder and put on his most amiable face as he was assigned to a team alongside a fellow godling, intent on trying.

the amiable face in question just so happened to be a blank expression, paired with wire-taut, sealed lips, until they brought out the cooking utensils.

“we have to beat the satyr kids,” he stated, warming up slightly as he gave the other a quick lookover. “what are your talents? what are your weaknesses? what do you like to cook?” a pause. his gaze deepened. “... what's your name again?”
