2019 Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award Winners Announced

The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) honored the late scholar and Yale University social ecologist Stephen R. Kellert’s legacy at the third annual Biophilic Design Award last night with a special award ceremony hosted by Interface, during the 2019 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. The ceremony was held at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s new Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design, the first building of its kind aiming for Living Building Challenge certification in the Southeastern United States.

The award is in recognition of achievements in the built environment that demonstrate Kellert’s understanding of the human/nature connection. This year, award-winners were selected from three different project categories: Building Scale, Interior/Renovation, and Community/Urban Scale. The winners from each project category are as follows:

Building scale: Heart of School: A Bamboo Cathedral at Green School Bali, Bali, Indonesia

Heart of School: A Bamboo Cathedral at Green School Bali was selected by the judges as the winner in the Building Scale category. A bamboo cathedral inspired by the spiral movements of nature in the Fibonacci sequence, the structure impressed judges with its vernacular architectural style that spoke to the richness of biophilic design. As the Heart of the School, the building forms the central core of Green School, with a roof shaped in the form of three spiraling nautili.

From the jury: The jury found the school to be an exceptional international biophilia project that embodies the spirit of place. An incredible example of bamboo architecture, the open air concept and thatched roof create a cathedral that is structured, yet organic. This use of local natural materials creates an open-air environment that suits the climate and contributes to a strong local vernacular. By offering students a place to learn, connect, and be immersed in nature, the younger generation is learning a new way of living and honoring the natural world. In this way, the school is not only a place where teaching happens, but the building itself becomes an integral part of the learning process.

As both visually impressive and environmentally conscious, the project fully exemplifies Kellert's vision for a biophilic and sustainable world. Though a decade old, awarding this project certainly represents the role of recognizing biophilic design that stands the test of time.

Interior/renovation: The Phenix, Montreal, Québec, Canada

The Phenix building was retrofitted by Lemay Architectural Firm to centralize its 350 employees in Montreal, Canada. The formerly industrial 95 000 sq. ft. building built in 1950 was originally used as a distribution center for the Simpsons department store catalog. The retrofit of this existing industrial structure as its name suggests it is the revival of a healthy, efficient and inspiring building.

Through the project, Lemay clearly determined its desire to go as far as possible to ensure the efficient use of resources, promote green transportation, enhance health and wellness, and guarantee that employees were connected to nature. The jury agreed that The Phenix shines for its environmental performance-based strategies and its incorporation of biophilic design elements to create an inviting and inspirational workplace.

The spirit of place can be felt as one enters the building through the garden and is greeted by the dynamic mural on the facade. Indoors, lighting and plant features surround the interior perimeter and complement the lounge’s living wall. The variety and diversity of biophilic patterns, local artwork, and natural colors are well designed and translate into a thoughtful project.

Community/urban scale: Growing a Biophilic City in a Garden - Singapore

Singapore’s Learning Forest and Lakeside Garden exemplify the city’s commitment to creating a biophilic city in a garden, where inhabitants live amidst a sustainable and biologically diverse urban ecosystem.

From the jury: The jury found the project to be an outstanding multi-functional park and ecosystem that serves as an example for other cities to learn from. The Learning Forest and Lakeside Garden showcase the potential of an urban application of biophilia that is geared towards educating students.

No other city has done as much to advance the vision and practice of biophilic cities as Singapore. The city-state has been at the forefront of linking people with nature through a vision supported by policy.

Top contenders and honorable mention for this year’s award include:

Chatham University Eden Hall Campus, Richland Township, PA, USA

From the jury: An incredibly thoughtful project, the jury praised the Eden Hall Campus for its impressive, comprehensive, and holistic design. All of the design elements come together to create a wonderful biophilic campus. The fostering of human connection to the natural world is evident from the smallest of details and patterns to the larger scales and systems of the project. The campus features a number of biophilic design elements including natural lighting and ventilation, earth tones, natural shapes and forms, natural materials and metals that patina over time, twenty-four rain gardens, on-site annual bird count stations, and pathways that reveal the geomorphology of the surrounding land. The blurring of indoor/outdoor boundaries throughout the multiple buildings on-site, along with an incredible outdoor amphitheater, allows nature to creep in. Through the team’s careful consideration of the land, the project embodies the spirit of place and preserves the site’s pastoral history.

Laity Lodge, Leakey, TX, USA

Positioned along the emerald waters of the Frio River within the steep limestone canyon walls of Texas Hill Country, Laity Lodge is a retreat center like no other. Founded in 1961, the mission of the Lodge is to reinforce guests’ connection to themselves, each other, and the divine through deep and meaningful experiences with the natural world. Inspired by the intimate scale and natural features of the site, the design team’s primary goal was to create a place that could not be built anywhere else, for anyone else.

Derived from the thoughtful listening of the land, the arrangement and sensitive fitting-in of new structures on an existing retreat site create nestled moments that still the senses and connect occupants to the beauty and grace of nature. Laity Lodge’s use of natural and indigenous building materials reflect local resources and honoring of place: cedar plank siding that will patina over time, corten metal panels, limestone finishes, slate finishes, and natural stone tile. Additionally, the project was intended to be a “sponge” for collecting and cleaning runoff before reaching the river below, a unique integration of on-site water management and biophilia.

Honorable Mention: Womb with a View, Cannon Beach, OR, USA

From the jury: Designed for a single family, Womb with a View is a curvilinear wood-clad residence overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the village of Cannon Beach, Oregon. The home offers a place of refuge, recovery and rejuvenation with an interior environment that is both “spacious and cozy” with a variety of ceiling heights, interior wall surfaces of natural materials (wood, stone, and plaster) and focused views to the surrounding landscape. Through bands of clerestory windows, natural light brings the eclectic interior to life, even on the overcast days common to the Oregon coast. A 250-year-old Sitka Spruce anchors the layout of the home, serves as a shade canopy, and provides habitat for a multitude of coastal creatures.

Applauded by the jury for its care to interior details, textures, and a delightful use of wood throughout, this treehouse beach cabin alludes a warmth that is especially inviting. There is a sweetness to this project that sings of love and reverence of nature. The conscious decisions to connect one with the natural world internally are clearly reflected in the design concept.

VIEW: Turkish Freight conserves 4 clinically depressed circus lions – brings them back to South Africa

Turkey’s national airline carrier, Turkish Airlines’ cargo company, Turkish Cargo, recently embarked on a rescue mission for three sister lions named Luca, Charlie and Kai and a male cub named Nathan.

Turkish Cargo delivered the lions to their natural habitat in South Africa by transporting them on a flight from the Ukraine to Johannesburg with a stopover in Istanbul.

The lions were saved by Lionel de Lange, Director of the Lawrence Anthony World Organization (LAEO) in the Ukraine.

“I knew that I couldn’t leave these lions behind. They were living in 35 square metres of concrete and steel. Their cage was welded shut so you couldn’t open or close or get in to clean them. So they were living in their own faeces and urine and leftover food and bones.”

On their journey, Luca, Charlie, Kai and Nathan were accompanied by Lionel, special veterinarians and Turkish Cargo personnel certified in transporting live animals.

After a marathon flight of almost 9 000 kilometres (5 592 miles), the lions were set free in the Kragga Kamma Game Park in Port Elizabeth. The lions’ new home is a natural habitat offering 14 000 square meters (nearly 150 700 square feet) of green coastal forest and meadows.

ENGIE signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) in Mexico to supply renewable energy to steel producer, Gerdau. The Group is developing a 130 MW photovoltaic plant in Sonora, northern Mexico composed of approximately 400 000 solar panels, which will provide Gerdau with a 100% clean and economic source of energy for its industrial processes. With the construction of this new solar farm in Mexico, set to be operational at the end of 2019, ENGIE will exceed 1000 MW of renewable energy generation capacity in the country in operation or in construction.

The Group also signed a power purchase agreement with Santiago de Chile airport operator, Nuevo Pudahuel, to supply 100% certified renewable energy which will reduce the airport’s CO2 emissions by 35,700 tons per year. Under the 16-year agreement, ENGIE will supply the airport with 105 GWh per year of green electricity to meet all its power needs.

These two contracts follow other agreements ENGIE signed in Latin America in the last 12 months with companies in different markets: food, consumer goods, telecommunications, banking, services and construction. In this way, the Group advances in its strategy of increasing the availability of sustainable solutions that contribute to harmonious progress.

Philip De Cnudde, CEO of ENGIE Latin America, said: “These two contracts clearly illustrate our strategy to deliver renewable energy to B2B customers as part of our customer solutions offer in Latin America.”

Rebuilding a flagship camp in a World Heritage Site

Mombo and Little Mombo

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

In order to maintain our high environmental standards both during the construction phase and for the complete camp, a close synergy between contractors, designers and environmental staff was formed, adopting strict mitigating measures and standards to ensure minimal impacts and sustainable operations in this unique environment.

Mombo was first built in 1990, with its first upgrade to becoming a really upmarket camp in 1999, plus the addition at that point of Little Mombo. The camp is located at the northern end of Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve and has become widely renowned for the incredible wildlife populations and sightings. These were augmented in the early 2000s with the introduction of both white and black rhino, with the latter population being boosted by further introductions in 2014 and 2015. The camp is Wilderness’ flagship, and arguably one of the most famous of its kind in Africa. The quality of the camp offering is demonstrated by the many awards it has earned over the years, most notably No. 1 on the Travel + Leisure 2013 World’s Best Awards list of Top 100 Hotels.

With the expiry of the Mombo concession in April 2014, the camp had been due for renovation. Once it became clear the lease would be renewed, the Board approved the upgrade of the camp. The brief for the architectural and design teams, Nick Plewman Architects and Associates, and Caline Williams-Wynn from Artichoke, was to maintain the rich history and character of the camp, while remodelling it to the highest industry standards and minimising any negative impact on the environment.

Construction of the camp was undertaken by the experienced Botswana contracting firm Lodge Builders Botswana, under the direction of Wilderness’ project manager Andrew Johnson, operating on behalf of the Wilderness Safaris Botswana operational team. The process commenced in April 2017 and was completed late in January 2018. While construction was underway, guests were accommodated in the temporary Mombo Trails Camp.

The refurbishment of the camp was focused on upgrading guest rooms and communal areas as well as front-of-house service areas. A number of essential Environmental Management Systems (EMS) were upgraded.

Materials used

A full list of the materials used in the process is beyond the scope of this post. Nonetheless, the most prominent materials used in the rebuild are outlined below:

Canvas:

Roofing

Approximately 3 450 m2 of Serge Ferrari canvas was used for roofing. This originates in Switzerland as there were no local alternatives which would provide the same level of quality, longevity, safety and sustainability certification. The material used is 100% recyclable, phthalate free, Green Guard certified and fire-rated.

Exterior walls

Approximately 3 612 m² of nylon ripstop canvas was used for exterior walls. This was clad over wooden boards and insulation. The material was manufactured in South Africa and designed to deal with harsh African conditions.

Timber

A substantial amount of timber was used, primarily for structural support, decking, walkways and floors.

Decking

Approximately 80.3 m³of Rhino Wood was used for external decking and the main area. This is sourced from sustainably-managed pine plantations in South Africa. Rhino Wood is FSC certified and produced through a treatment process using organic compounds applied through thermal heat treatment and pressure impregnation. It requires little maintenance or restoration, negating the use of treatment oils and chemicals.

Internal flooring

English oak was used for internal flooring in guest rooms. The timber originates in Croatia and has been listed by the IUCN as a timber of least concern as the resources are vast and well managed. The timber is FSC and PEFC certified. Approximately 39.9 m³ was used.

Doors, windows and other finishes

Iroko hardwood from the west coast of Africa has been used for various finishes such as doors and window frames. This is a hard-wearing timber which requires little maintenance or chemical treatment and fares well in exterior conditions. The timber is listed as a low risk by the IUCN, and is FSC and PEFC certified. Approximately 89 m³ was used.

Reduce – Reuse – Recycle

To maintain the original character of Mombo and minimise waste disposal, a number of structural items were re-purposed and reused:

Structural gum poles used for the ‘Rhino Boma’;

Old walkway decking re-purposed as ceiling boards and cladding;

Old Mombo bar cladding reused as cladding, as well as the barbeque and table pedestals;

Original Flintstone doors from the guest rooms have been reused;

Various furnishings have been reused at other camps in the Okavango Delta.

Responsible Consumption and Production

In order to avoid unnecessary waste, and reduce the logistics of transporting goods in and out of the Okavango Delta, a large amount of structures and materials were re-used in the reconstruction process.

In addition, the Mombo Trails tents will be used in the construction of the new Magashi Camp in Akagera National Park, Rwanda and the inverters, photovoltaic arrays and sewage treatment plant will be re-deployed at various camps.

EMS upgrades

A number of essential systems were upgraded and improved to minimise environmental impact while maintaining a high level of service and not impacting on guest experience:

Solar plant

Mombo has been 100% solar powered by a 110 kW system installed in 2012. This existing solar array was allocated to power front-of-house areas, while an additional 51 kW system was installed to serve back-of-house.

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)

The existing plant was replaced by a container ‘Scarab’ style STP with a 25 000 litre/day flow rate. This uses anaerobic and aerobic processes to break down the effluent, following which the discharge water is sterilised, removing any remaining bacteria.

Water storage and filtration

The water storage, filtration system and distribution ring has been upgraded and simplified which will allow for better water treatment and management. Extra water meters have been installed and water reticulation maps updated and improved.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Clean water and sanitation are closely linked. It was crucial for Wilderness to effectively manage our waste water and ensure it returns into the environment without any contamination occurring. In order to provide our guests and staff with clean drinking water, several measures were taken to ensure this is done without producing any negative by-products which can be associated with water purification.

Smart architecture and natural cooling

A key challenge was to ensure that the climate of the area did not impact on guests’ comfort, without relying on inefficient energy solutions, such as air conditioners. The gym is the only location in camp where an air conditioner has been used. (An energy efficient inverter has been used in this instance.) All other guest areas are cooled by natural airflow and smart architecture, including suspended wooden floors and double layered roofing. Glass wool insulation has been used in walls and ceilings. The insulation material used is endorsed by the Green Building Council.

Climate Action

The first step before investing in solar power is to reduce energy demand. As Mombo is 100% solar powered, great efforts were made to reduce demand while delivering a premier guest experience.

Construction logistics and associated carbon footprint

A record of building material logistics was kept during construction. Approximately 3 250 tonnes of assorted materials were transported from Maun to site. Each truck used approximately 300 litres of diesel on a return trip, suggesting a total of 195 000 litres of fuel used for transport. The associated carbon footprint is 512 tonnes CO2e.
