Today's compilation:
Do You See 2000 IDM / Electro
Alright, back on some electronic shit for today. Here we have a 12-inch sampler from a little, short-lived label out of the UK called deFocus, which was run by Clair Poulton, a woman who first cut her teeth at Aphex Twin's own Rephlex label before launching a label of her own called Clear; and then after Clear closed up shop, she started up this one.
Do You See represents the first of two 12-inch releases that showcased the type of music that deFocus' roster was cooking up at the time at the turn of the millennium, which happened to be mostly different shades of IDM. Some of it was fused with an old school electro vibe too though, like "Touched," which was by a group called Aphelion, and "Mystery One," which was by Mystery, whose own identity (or identities) appears to've indeed been a mystery! Both of these tracks come with pretty standard electro backbeats, but their respective vibes seem to be diametrically opposed to one another—"Touched" has a chemically icy whimsiness to it and "Mystery One" seems to be more interested in plumbing the depths of hell 👹. (And for more Aphelion, you can also check them out as Replicant on the breathtakingly chill, 10-plus-minute beaut' from 1996 that is "Analiz.")
But while those are certainly both two pretty sweet tunes, I don't think that they really hold a candle to another type of IDM that's on here: the more emotive kind that likes to surround all those pecky and glinty, rhythmic IDM bits with captivatingly fluffy clouds of melody and lush synth pads. Plus One's "Mayday," which was written by Plus One himself, but actually produced by the one and only legendary IDM duo of Plaid, is one such example, as it first supplies old and dramatic, cinematic string work, but progressively floods the remainder of its track with a beautiful blend of electronic, intertwining synths that sound significantly much more sci-fi-modern. You think that this song's hitting its creative peak at about a third of the way through when it adds its first new synth to pair with all these strings, but it actually has multiple more levels to ascend through, which is definitely gratifying, but doesn't even seem all that necessary, given that it's already achieved its status as a chief highlight of this record once that first new synth is poured in in the earlier going! 😌
And then for a song that appears to mix some of the electro vibe with that lush and lovely synth work, we have the pretty sublime "Commuter Love" by CiM to close us out. It's not nearly long enough, but in a similar way to Mystery's "Mystery One," it too has a bit of a sinister underlying synth to it, but in this song's case, the light of the trancey twinkling stabs that arrive soon afterwards seem to do a lot to neutralize much of that darkness.
So every track's a highlight on this one as deFocus puts forth an IDM statement here that looks back on the past with a deliberate eye on elements of electro, but seems to have its other eye trained on the future too. And when you have a pair of eyes that appear to be looking in completely opposite directions from one another, then I guess what you can say is that their combined eyesight is definitely, well...deFocused (<_>).

breakcore has always been a really open-ended genre that can be fused to a lot of different sounds. this can make it hard to concretely characterize.
relevant image:
when you go through the artists (some i would debate listing, some i haven't heard, but i've listened to most) different influences push and pull the same "genre" in many directions--IDM, gabber, oldschool rave, ragga, jungle, jazz, speedcore, juke, metal... and so on.
in a way, breakcore is characterized by its diversity in sampling, genre blends, and production styles. but on the whole, it prioritizes atypical, dynamic percussive programming (featuring, of course, drum breaks) over melodic components.
additionally, i think it's loosely characterized by a transgressive nature--it's edgy! which thankfully doesn't just mean offensive. it means challenging genre conventions, expectations of song structures and priorities, expectations around samples and their associations, and the general sense of "listenability".
at times i worry that i have no right to "gatekeep" the breakcore label from nubreak producers when it's always been really flexible. but i feel that the atmospheric dnb inspired sound returns the percussion to the background, simplifying programming and sanding off the edges of its older, weirder inspiration.
breakcore can be many things, but above all, i think it should be weird, interesting, and a little hard to categorize. there's no way to recapture the exact historical moment of the original 90's-00's scene, but for as long as the word keeps being used, i hope we can carry forward the things that made it special.

“You’ve been on your phone a lot, lately.”
You almost jump when you hear Biho’s soft, sleepy voice behind you. He looks at your device with curiosity, not judgment. Never judgement.
It’s much too early for Biho to be awake. Being a young night goblin, Biho is rarely up in the morning hours.
To be fair, you’re rarely up this early either. But since you had started playing Mystic Messenger again, you had taken it upon yourself to get a perfect run, with no missed chats and calls. That meant that you had set several alarms throughout the day to warn you of new chatrooms opening and that you woke up at 8:00 sharp out of dedication for your 2D crush.
Since you were already up anyway, you decided to read through the chat while eating breakfast.
“Are you editing photos for your Wannabe?”
He asks, taking off his round glasses to rub at his eyes, trying his best to look more awake.
“No.” You say, a little embarrassed. There were a few photos for a sponsored post you’ve been meaning to edit, but you put it off after your last fanfiction binge. “I… Actually need to get started on that.”
“Oh.”
Biho looks a little surprised at your admission. He’s used to you being dedicated to your account and being careful about managing your sponsored posts. Maybe modelling wasn’t what you originally wanted to do with your life, but you always made sure to give it your all anyway.
It was strange for you to put off something that important. He looks more alert, now, looking at you with clear worry in his soft features.
The sight fills you with guilt. You know the constant alarms sounding off and you being on your phone (and being so protective of it) is incredibly suspicious. It hasn’t been that long since you were being attacked by another model’s fans, after all, and your seemingly endless string of bad luck could only signal something bad happening and you not wanting to burden your housemates with your latest troubles.
“It isn’t anything bad! I promise.” You are quick to reassure, and his expression softens. “I’m just… Addicted to a romance game. I’ve been looking forward to the updates and I lost track of time.” You quietly, and just a little awkwardly try to explain the game mechanics to him. It takes him a bit of time to fully grasp the idea of a chatroom-themed visual novel, but it piques his interest the second you explain it as an interactive romance novel.
Your explanation turns to gushing as soon as he asks about the cast. You make sure to go to the app’s gallery to show each character as you explain their personality and role in the story.
“...And right now I’m trying to get 707’s good ending. He’s by far my favourite character!” You click on his section of the gallery. Your phone takes you to a loading screen, so you decide to continue gushing as the progress bar on the screen slowly fills up. “He’s so well-designed! Really, he’s my ideal type. And I adore his personality. On other routes, he acts like this jokester who doesn’t really take things seriously, but if you pursue him romantically you find out he’s much more than that. He just uses humour as a front to avoid getting too close to other people and— Oh, the screen loaded!”
You quickly loaded one of the images and showed it to Biho. His face darkens into a blush as he processes what he’s seeing on the screen.
Because the character you just showed him, and that you happily described as your ideal type looks almost identical to him.
He looks from you to the phone screen a few times, before you get worried and look back at your phone, trying to figure out why he’s reacting so strangely.
Then it’s like you see it too. Of course, one of the things that made you want to revisit the game in the first place was Biho reminding you of Seven, but you didn’t consider that as you gushed about how attractive you think Seven was, being too focused on your attachment to the character and distracted by your rambling.
Your eyes widen, and you try to figure out how to backtrack without making things weirder.
Then, Biho smiles.
A cute, happy, sleepy smile. He just looks so satisfied, so pleased. Like your little blunder meant the world to him.
You decide to put your embarrassment aside for a moment. There were worse things in the world than admitting you found your housemate to be attractive, and if made him so happy, there was no way you’d lie to take that joy away.
Instead, you look at this situation as an opportunity.
“Biho, how do you feel about cosplay?”

frankcore june 2024 update!!
these keep coming out later and later with each month lmfao whatever. very much loaded with pop and adjacent sounds because hey, album of the year dropped, gotta rep it. some modern forms of hip hop here, some electronic stuff there, the usual stuff.
on the pop front: as i said, album of the year dropped, and while i could've chosen a lot of tracks off the regular version of the album, i ended up going with spring breakers because it works well to represent the ethos of the album and also appeals to me enjoying a mostly trashy late-00s / early-10s electropop sound. in the same vein, debut single from the collaboration of argentinian producers and singers estratosfera and qiri presents a lot of the same flare but slightly more subdued, closer to a more apathetic electroclash-esque aesthetic in a way; in regards to sounds closer to the original bubblegum bass sound, we get a revival of sorts with a few influences of hardstyle here and there from growing figure in the underground 2hollis, as well as the first of probably several posthumous sophie releases, with one of her most eagerly awaited tracks by the fans and a classic pc-music-adjacent pop sound that still works wonderfully, even after years of being in the vault. a couple of pop legends here, i actually listened to confessions on a dance floor in full for the first time and hey, it's a great record still and all of its singles are bonafide hits, and we also got robyn featuring on a single for jamie xx's upcoming album, bringing a lot of energy with a classic house beat filled with irresistible horn lines and shuffling rhythms. in a more r&b-inspired tinge, i went back to sumin's excellent "your home" album, an incredible blend of electronic idioms into classic r&b songwriting, as well as the newest single from tinashe's upcoming project, going for a more nocturnal, clubbier vibe than the surprise juggernaut hit nasty, very excited for the full album. we've also got some pop that somewhat falls under the parameters of the indie umbrella, with the charming, beautiful and comfy cámara lenta from latin-american pop legend javiera mena, some indietronica sounds from broadcast (finally getting into them proper, great album) and former hero (very much a modern take into the sound more inspired by mainstream edm tropes, in this case, taking a more midtempo prog house approach which i'm always a fan of), wonderfully jaunty jangle pop revival from fontaines d.c. and absolutely enchanting folk pop / singer-songwriter crossover sounds straight out of the 70s from jessica pratt.
on the hip hop front: keeping up to date with the modern developments of soundcloud-rap-adjacent sounds, we've got wokeups putting autotune to its limits and using that technology in an exciting and unique way, uk mcs yt and lancey foux delivering an absolute banger and contributing to the consolidation of the jerk sound, akriila and taichu bringing an industrial perreo rush of agression with maddeningly catchy hooks and lines that laps at just shy of two minutes of runtime, and iceboy violet and nueen presenting a mystifying fusion of ambient sound design and more subdued rap delivery. in somewhat less modern offerings, a surprising meetup of ed banger producer mr. flash with cities aviv, action bronson and oh no, which aren't mcs you typically see join forces very often, delivering a chipmunk-soul-esque hip hop joint, and dean blunt and dj escrow's babyfather putting their hands on lethargic r&b duo 18+'s drama, built on a mesmerizing sample and escrow's classic spoken word delivery.
on the electronic front: blood of aza and s280f delivering their signature post-club, collage-like sound in a particularly arresting manner, kamixlo presenting a surprising foray into idm and techno idioms that works very well for someone like me that isn't particularly enamored by either sound, the return of edm trap legend rustie with a track more akin to the post-trance excursions of producers like evian christ (a sound always most welcome), former noisia member thys dropping a footwork jungle banger with signature chopped up vocal lines and rolling drum lines, and closing up the list, dazegxd's take on bunny general's mek them rock, an acapella i really like and that works wonderfully with the current developments of jungle. in a semi-related note, the one outlier on the list this month, kieran hebden (aka four tet)'s incursion into jazzier sounds of rock with a particularly inviting and enveloping ten minute opus.

166/ MigloJE - Elements 2 (2023) hmm..it's not doing much for me? I think i wouldve been bonkers for this in 2006. does that make it retro? it does have a VERY early 00s bedroom synth vibe. highlights: "Eyes full of sky part 2". "Star Dust" hits right.

169/ Nimu - Picture In Picture (2023) flowing waters, gently carrying you away. surprising amount of tobacco smoke difuses the streetlamps. for some reason this didnt do much for me overall. highlights…… hmm. mostly just "Ultramarine".

170/ Brioskj - Afterlife (2023) a brighter side of chill. "I'm Jealous" has a really cool spacey progression that resonates with me fsr. the shifting harmonies actually permeate the whole EP, which i rather enjoy, but t3 in particular hit me 2nite. "Sultriness 2022" rly good too.

171/ Aleksi Perälä - The Colundi Sequence Level 1 (2014) i remember skimming a few tracks each of these 100000 albums and then adding them to my list if anything caught my ear. im not sure why this made my list. prolly GBBVT1337052. feels like great meditation music overall.

177/ (every Tokyo Dawn Records mod release, 1998) hmm. dnb. lots of good stuff tbh, but im being picky. some actual hilites: "selbstmord?" is such a cool spacey mood. feels like it could fit in metroid prime. love it. "peachy" is just oldschool s3xmit for me to enjoy the dnb "On me" still dnb but man i cant deny this is FRESH for 98. absolutely bonkers you could get a 1MB module of this at the time. "wolkenflug" hmm. a lil too trance for my taste but its getting there "in vestigator" cool! b-side is a bit much (loopy) but i dig the texture "during 8" finally! some big slow breaks! sadly its just ok. "Collapsoid" huh kinda cool lil textures in this groove "AbstractTechnoVibes" anything "aphexy" gets my attention huh. cool textures and cool synthwork. warbles! "into the unknown" holding an intense fight against my distaste for dnb (and esp darkstep) by being good "lesbians on wax 2.0" i love how this is called "ae-esque." it sure is… for 1998, on the 10th of july, three days before LP5. (ok actually LP5 isn't quite as much of a leap as confield was but still.) yes good i like it "AlbertoBalsalm (rmx)" is fascinating. its hard to best the original and this doesn't quite manage but it's neat to hear someone take it on in a tracker. it's at its best when it deviates from (instead of trying to augment) the original. 5!? wild. "little 8bit box ep" beats :)

"More Tea EP" rly good! love those breaks!! "Parannoying" takes dnb timbres and combines them into a weird lazy afternoon tracker thing. the whole ep actually. standout. "Reversions" chilled out hiphop vibes, no twists. hits good.

Cottage Industries (A Neo Ouija Compilation) 2000 IDM / Leftfield
Got into some excellent y2k-era IDM today with this first installment from a long-running series called Cottage Industries that was put out by UK label Neo Ouija. Here we have a nearly spotless collection of mindbending stuff that's sure to leave any IDM junkie feeling blissed-out, just like the iconic android in the armchair from the cover of Artificial Intelligence, the foundational comp from Warp Records that really put IDM on the map in the first place all the way back in 1992 😌. Neo Ouija seems to go for that super chill, emotively melancholic, and solitudinous kind of vibe, and this comp here, which appears to have been just the label's fourth release, serves as a great introduction to their sound from when they were just getting started.
And ultimately, it's really hard for me to pick total favorites among this set, but I feel like I need to talk about a couple in particular: one, Quinoline Yellow's "Eythyl Maltol," and two, Clatterbox's "Power Up."
Quinoline Yellow's "Eythyl Maltol," a title that makes reference to a flavor-enhancing chemical compound, is the debut track from a guy named Luke Williams, who, quite possibly because of this very tune, would go on to showcase his talents the following year on the much more well-known Skam label. "Eythyl Maltol" is a slow, head-nod-inducing groove, with rhythmically glitchy stutters and some beautifully layered, otherworldly synth work to go along with it all. And among debut tracks for IDM artists, it probably ranks towards the top; a total unknown guy making a name for himself rather quickly with this one.
And Clatterbox's aptly titled "Power Up," which liberally incorporates zappy 8-bit videogame sounds, feels like the track with the most mass appeal here. Typically, IDM is made for a post-club, home listening environment, but I feel like you could totally get away with playing this one at a nerdy hipster bar-type setting. A bit more uptempo and far more conventionally structured than the rest of these tunes, this electro-leaning track could maybe serve as a solid nugget in order for you to introduce your friends to this whole amazing genre of underground electronic music; before, y'know, you start to melt their brains with some of the more abstract stuff 🫠.

És innentől már tényleg csak akit nagyon-nagyon érdekel :)
Szóval tavaly ugye januártól elkezdtem pontosan dokumentálni, hogy miket hallgattam meg az új termésből, mi mennyire tetszett. Hozzávetőleges, sokszor csak félig hallgatott lemezek értékelése volt, de aztán valamikor június-júliusban ráuntam, mert nem úgy haladt, ahogyan terveztem, sok tervezett meghallgatás felhalmozódott, nehéz projekt ez, mert hát egyre több jó, de nem kiemelkedő lemez van, masszív túltermelés zajlik. De hát ki mondja meg bárkinek, aki hangszerhez nyúl, hogy ne tegye. Vagy legalábbis ne adja közre, ami kijön belőle. De ha nem mondjuk senkinek ezt, akkor ki értékeli ezt a mérhetetlen mennyiséget, tényleg csak tipp: évente sokszázezer lemez jelenik meg. És hát hogyan lehet objektíven értékelni, ha nem úgy, hogy a lehető legtöbbet megpróbáljuk hallani? Nem csak, azt a pár tucatot, amit a hype, meg a haverok elénk hoznak.
Én ezt továbbra sem unom csinálni, továbbra is érdekel, hogy mi történik, kíváncsi vagyok, örömet okoz. De néha ráunok. Vagy elsodor. Azért az év második felét is behúztam úgy-ahogy, de év vége helyett valamikor 2020 januárban lett ez a lista, amire még később is rátettem tán két lemezt. Nincs vége ötvennél, amikor abbahagytam a szöszölést vele, akkor ennyi volt (138), amire úgy gondoltam, hogy ha évek múlva ránézek erre a listára, nem baj, ha a 112. helyen lévőről is beugrik majd valami.
Nem tudom mennyi 2019-es lemezt hallottam összesen, tippre ezerpárszázat, abból ez a java, van jó pár tucat, amit felírtam, hogy még mindenképp meghallgatni, de nem került rá sor. És én sem felejtem el, hogy simán lehetne még egyszer ennyi olyanból, amiről alig pár ember hallott, de ott van Bandcampen, mint 2019-es lemez.
