Every now and then, I see tweets about 2D animated movies made around the 2000s... Typically action-oriented movies that were aimed at a "big kid" audience. Typically boys around 8-12 years old-ish. Movies that infamously flopped pretty badly upon release...
The likes of... THE ROAD TO EL DORADO, TITAN A.E., ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE, TREASURE PLANET, and SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS...
I'm gonna assume a lot of these people who pine for those kinds of movies to be made again weren't alive in the early 2000s, or were very very little when they were first released...
(I'm not specifically singling out Okiro, their post was simply wishing that these movies had done well when they first came out. No harm in that.)
Anyways... A lot of other people wonder why these movies that *slapped* flopped so hard back in the day...
For starters, it's because these movies were not very well-liked back when they first came out.
A lot of them got really mixed to negative critical reception, adults on message boards and forums thought they were or looked absolutely dumb, it didn't help that they were 2D animated during the era where any given new CG film was a big novelty worth seeing on a big screen. Keep in mind, the likes of SHARK TALE and CHICKEN LITTLE - both critically lambasted movies back in the day - still made more money than a beloved movie like LILO & STITCH.
Times changes, tastes change...
For example, in 2001, ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE was attacked for having a diverse set of characters. Swap "woke" for "politically correct", and you'll see that 2001-times were really no different from now times... We just didn't have social media back then. It was also ripped apart by some American anime fans who felt it was a deliberate rip-off of NADIA: THE SECRET OF THE BLUE WATER, and this was definitely fueled by the whole LION KING/KIMBA controversies that arose in the mid-to-late '90s. A lot of people were convinced that Disney was ripping off another anime classic. (Miramax, who were owned by Disney back then, also infamously tried to cut PRINCESS MONONOKE for its North American release, which also added fuel to the fire.)
But the main sort-of consensus on ATLANTIS was that it was a toothless PG-rated action movie that was probably too intense for younger kids and too silly for anyone over the age of 10 who would rather see a harder PG-13 movie, or something R-rated. They would be likelier to try to sneak into the SOUTH PARK movie than see something like ATLANTIS. That also affected TITAN A.E., TREASURE PLANET, etc. etc. Those movies targeted an audience that was never going to be there to begin with.
Meanwhile, in 2001, adults went and saw the CG animated comedies SHREK and MONSTERS, INC. in addition to families heading to them. The writing and the characters hooked them. I was at a Christmas party a week ago, and one of the older adult guests - who was maybe 10-15 years older than I am - was saying in a conversation about Disney and Pixar movies that he happened to like MONSTERS, INC. In a sorta, "oh yeah, that MONSTERS, INC. one. I like that!" It was hard to get a mid-20s adult to see an animated movie back then, and movies like SHREK and MONSTERS, INC. had the hooks for them.
The year prior, TITAN A.E. and EL DORADO flopped hard, but also, so did buddy comedy THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, and the general release of FANTASIA 2000. All largely 2D movies, at that. Aardman/DreamWorks' CHICKEN RUN did great, RUGRATS IN PARIS made back its budget, and DINOSAUR was popular despite not making enough for Disney to greenlight a sequel and to keep The Secret Lab (the production company set up to make the movie) operating.
2002 was when TREASURE PLANET came out. That shared the year with CG comedy ICE AGE, which did very well, and Disney's 2D family drama LILO & STITCH, which did pretty good! The anomaly of that sorry era for 2D animated movies... Everything else, though... EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON, POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE, etc. Rough year. The big hit was the 3D funny animals movie, and also the hybrid STUART LITTLE sequel. Oddly, THE WILD THORNBERRYS MOVIE managed to somewhat make its budget back.
And of course, SINBAD happened to share its summer with FINDING NEMO. SINBAD didn't even make a fraction of FINDING NEMO's opening weekend gross... And that same year, RUGRATS GO WILD, BROTHER BEAR, etc.... All just grossed in the sub-$100m regions domestically and didn't do much better worldwide.
Movies like ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET, struggled because they didn't have an adult hook. I remember at the time, the lack of interest (I was 8 when ATLANTIS came out), and later seeing on forums what adults thought of these movies. How they didn't want to see them. How they looked uncool and stupid. Meanwhile, the likes of SHREK, MONSTERS (comma) INC., ICE AGE, and FINDING NEMO? That was where it was at!
ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET likely just looked like kiddie action movies that... Little kids probably couldn't go to see, so... For no one, really.
But some kids out there had the VHSes and DVDs of these movies, and watched them again and again and again... And took them, along with several other 2D flops of the era, into their adulthood. The ones who have kids are showing those same movies to them, so that's the happy ending. It's also kind of a Disney tradition... PINOCCHIO, FANTASIA, BAMBI, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and SLEEPING BEAUTY were massive flops on their first releases, too... I do know that ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET did much better on home video than they did in theaters, and I'm sure TV airings helped as well.
Video saved many a non-Disney animated movie, too. Like, there's a reason why there were sequels to movies like ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN and FERNGULLY. They were video hits. Heck, if anything, the video sales for movies like EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE and BROTHER BEAR are why they got direct-to-video sequels (and in NEW GROOVE's case, a TV series).
I could also go on a tangent about people pining for the '90s Disney animated movies like THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and TARZAN, and those same people comparing those movies to the rather focus-grouped and toothless Disney animated films we get now. Like STRANGE WORLD and WISH. And yet, when the likes of HUNCHBACK, HERCULES, MULAN, and TARZAN were released? They were treated as dull, more of the same, "politically correct" (especially in MULAN's case), insulting even. Those movies were also test screened for random groups of toddlers, and stuff was cut or altered because of what they felt. Things weren't perfect back then, either... We may look back on '90s Disney Animation and say "What nerve they had, adapting all those dark stories, folklore, and even American history into G-rated family friendly musicals!" And back then, that really really rankled and even offended folks.
So it's a real case of "you had to be there". In hindsight, a movie like HUNCHBACK or ATLANTIS seems amazing compared to some of the stuff that comes out today. It hits different, for sure. "How could the world have skipped these movies at the box office???" The world was very different back then. Box office reflects where the zeitgeist is at, and it too reflects lots of things, more than just "audiences loved the movie". Sometimes seeing a movie that everyone else is seeing for whatever reason is like some larger cultural thing, that same movie could very well be forgotten within a year.
Let's use 2001, ATLANTIS' release year, as our example... Some of the highest grossing movies of that year were PEARL HARBOR, JURASSIC PARK III, VANILLA SKY, etc. PEARL HARBOR, for example, is pretty reviled... But lots of people went and saw it, but I don't see or hear an ounce of the positivity regularly given to ATLANTIS, given to that movie. And that's a Michael Bay movie, no less! His once widely-despised TRANSFORMERS movies have seen reappraisal in some circles, along with some of his other pictures... So, long story short, box office means a whole lot of things... It just captures where the public is at, not so much the perceived quality of the movie nor if audiences actually liked the movie.
And sometimes, a movie is too late or too early. It's hard to make an impression when you never know where the larger public is at, and there's lots of other stuff out there... Maybe the old way of measuring a movie's success has been archaic for decades now...

WIP challenge!
((Time for 87000 “Untitled document” with annotation of what that means in each case! Tagged by @novantinuum!
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs (or as many peeps as you want, really- ‘tis just for fun!)
Well that’s not fair, I think it’s possible I have as many WIPs as I have followers
__
These are in the order they appear in my Google Docs account. “Untitled document” will be annotated with a basic description of what the untitled document is since asking for “Untitled document” with as many as there are would be ridiculous. XP I’ll stop when I feel like it or when it hits 3pm, whatever happens first.
Untitled document - Two chapters of Rose to the Occasion; collectively it’s “Mr. Andy” and Gem Harvest
Untitled document - Arthur fanfic
Untitled document - The WIP I mention in the opening note on The Candle Burns Low But Still It Burns
Untitled document - A treatment of a potential second chapter of It’s Okay to Need Help (immediately following this doc is a different treatment of the same chapter with the same document name so it’s not getting an individual bullet, and neither is the other untitled document that does this later. or the fourth one. why are there so many)
Untitled document - A document that is never leaving the catacombs
Untitled document - Describing it with more than “going to Torrid” would give away more of the plot than I’d like without specifically being asked to elaborate
Untitled document - Similarly to the above... I’ll just say “teaching”
Untitled document - My doc for Auto-Injector, contains posted and WIP content
Untitled document - set after Snow Day
Untitled document - A doc that was probably more writing exercise than WIP, set in the same universe as Just a Little Something Else Instead
Rose to the Occasion - First named doc 11 docs in?! This is not just the chapter that’s been posted
SU x Holes
Untitled document - SU and Hero Elementary
yeah idk
Beach City Accessibility Audit but it’s permanent this time
Untitled document - anemia
Untitled document - not leaving catacombs
Steeb is a monster and making him think he isn't is harder than just hugging this time
Untitled document - Rugrats in Paris (but not a RiP fanfic)
Angsty Ramblings of a Robonoid (AND) A Robonoid Helped Write This Fic
Only Jasper and Mister Rogers can calm down wormy boy apparently
Untitled document - 3 year old
HG4or5
Untitled document - something something trial
this has leak spoilers in it and i am once again here not knowing how to title things
Untitled document - Two ones next to each other which are both Realism-related
...It’s 3pm. I only got to docs last opened on or after November 29, 2021. ._.
Go wild! Please ask me questions?! Maybe this will help me prioritize what to finish
There is only one person I’m following off the top of my head who has ever posted fanfic ever, is still active, and is not the person who tagged me (the person I am thinking of is @grits-mcallister). I just felt weird doing my usual of “yo, if anyone wants to do this, take it as a tag!!” so... feel free to do this? Or not? XD))
#i'm so wishy washy oh my gosh#tag meme#if this was 2013 i would have so many other people i could think of to tag

New Update has been published on Rachel Brosnahan Web
New Post has been published on http://rachel-brosnahan.org/2018/07/31/press-video-rachel-brosnahan-channels-beyonce-for-the-standup-scenes-in-the-marvelous-mrs-maisel/
Press/Video: Rachel Brosnahan Channels Beyoncé For the Standup Scenes in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
From the time when Rachel Brosnahan first showed up on our screens as Midge, the 50’s housewife-turned-standup comedian in the Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to when she won the Golden Globe in January for her breakthrough performance, the actress has seemed a natural for creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s quick-fire one-liners. Which is why it’s a little surprising to hear just how terrified Brosnahan was of her turn to comedy after appearances in deadly serious dramas like House of Cards. Here, catch up with the Emmy nominee as she explains why she some of that Sasha Fierce courage whenever she has to go onstage on Mrs. Maisel, the second season of which is still in production.
Do you remember a time when you did not want to be an actress?
No. There was never a time when I didn’t want to be an actress, I don’t think. Maybe when I was an infant, but probably still then also.
Were you a theatrical child?
I was kind of a shy kid, actually. I read a lot. I had my face in a book all the time, but I had a big imagination.
What was the first job you auditioned for?
My first audition ever was for a voiceover for a rehab facility in central Illinois. I did [book it].
Was there an audition for the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel?
There was definitely an audition; there were a few of them. The first one was pretty standard. I came in for just a casting director in a small room not completely unlike this one that I’m in now, and read a couple of scenes. And then a couple weeks later, I went out to L.A. to read with/for Amy [Sherman-Palladino] and Dan [Palladino] and our L.A. casting director Jeanie Bacharach.
And did you dress the part a little bit?
A little bit. I tried not to. I can’t really do my own hair and makeup, so anything in that department was kind of a disaster. But for my first audition, I think I wore this little yellow shirt that I thought was adorable but then they asked me to change for my second audition. [Laughs.] So, it wasn’t as adorable as I thought.
How much do you think the costumes are apart of the character in Mrs. Maisel?
The costumes are a huge part. Midge’s outer appearance is something she takes an enormous amount of pride in, something that makes her feel good and gives her a purpose. It’s the first thing the world sees and it means a lot to her. The costumes are huge on our show and our costume designer Donna Zakowska is a freaking crazy genius lady and everything that falls out of her brain is more brilliant than the last thing. She just continues to outdo herself, and it’s become such an important part of the show, and of this woman.
Do you have to wear a girdle?
I have to wear a corset, but fun fact about the corset: I used to wear a corset that was called the Krakowski because it had originally been designed for Jane Krakowski. And this season, now we have the Brosnahan, which was designed in Paris when we went out to shoot there for a little bit. So I have my very own corset now. I’m in the big leagues. [Laughs.]
How does it feel? Has it changed your posture, your body?
Yeah, at first, when we first started shooting the first couple episodes of the first season, I felt like I couldn’t think about anything but the fact that I was in a corset. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t eat. And I got used to it over time, which is sort of disturbing but also great.
And then, this season, with the new one, it’s a little bit different than the former corset. I like it, it’s supportive and… I’m not wearing a corset to make me smaller. I’m wearing a corset to slightly change the shape of my waist to match the 1950’s. So, the clothes in the 50’s, the waist was a little bit lower than it was in the 40’s and my natural waist is kind of high, so that’s the reason I have a corset on. But I do find it changes the way I stand and sit and walk. And between the corset and the petticoats and the tights and these beautiful, beautiful costumes, and hair and makeup, I feel completely transformed when I walk out of the trailer. That’s my favorite part about being an actor—it always has been. And I’m so lucky to be on a show where I get to do that so completely every day.
Were you nervous about doing the comedy?
Was I nervous? [Laughs.] I’m still nervous every single day. Comedy is horrifying, it’s absolutely terrifying, it’s the worst thing I could possibly imagine anyone doing to themselves. And by the same token, it’s the most thrilling and most exhilarating and most bold and brave thing I could possibly imagine. I can’t claim to have ever really experienced what it’s like to do stand up, because real stand up, you’re out there as yourself and you’re pouring your soul out, or some part of your soul out, for a laugh. And on our show, I don’t have to be me, I’m playing a character.
But she’s pouring her soul out.
She is, yeah, but the lines are written for me. The brilliant jokes are written for me—but it’s still horrifying. It’s stage fright like I’ve never experienced, but one of the cool things about the show is that I get to grow along with Midge on this journey towards becoming a comedian.
I’ve learned a lot through the process, too, alongside her about somethings that Susie says to Midge about listening to an audience and responding with your audience and looking out at the crowd and really taking them in and the way that you carry yourself on stage—the way you walk, when you pause.and I’m learning a lot about the more technical side as we go on.
Do you think you’d ever go up and do stand up on your own?
Absolutely not. Nope. No, no, no, never. No, there are a whole host of things I’d rather do … No. [Laughs.]
But when you do it, do you feel you’re channeling something when you’re onstage doing the stand up scenes? Because they’re very interesting.
Really, I get to channel Midge but it feels like a little bit of a Sasha Fierce thing, you know? I do a lot of power posing in my dressing room in my corset and petticoats by myself, sort of trying to draw the confidence from somewhere. But yeah, it’s so cool, and I get to have so many scene partners in those scenes. Our background actors who are in the club with me, they’re extraordinary. They give everything to me while I’m up on stage and they are equally a part of those scenes either succeeding or falling flat and I’m eternally grateful for every new group of actors we have in those scenes.
So, growing up, what was your favorite TV show?
These answers are going to be very highbrow, but I really loved the Rugrats. I also really loved—there was this show on Noggin called Ghostwriter, and I loved it. It was about a bunch of kids my age solving mysteries. It was like a lot of the books I loved to read.
Did you have a favorite film?
[Laughs.] I really loved Austin Powers.
Your parents let you watch it? How old were you?
Too young, maybe. My dad really loved Austin Powers and… This is so silly, but I have such fond memories of watching Austin Powers with my whole family in the living room. My dad, because my brother and I were maybe a little on the young side, anytime they said bad words or something inappropriate, my dad would sort of go [clears throat] through the whole thing. He just loved it. Couldn’t get enough.
When did you tell your parents you wanted to be an actress?
Formally, probably when I was about 17. Right at that point where you’re in school and everybody starts talking about the SATs and the ACTs and where you want to go to college, and I think that was when I really realized I didn’t have any other interests, or any other viable job options.
Well, you were only 17.
That’s right, yeah. It’s so hard to know… It’s still so crazy to me that at 17 you’re supposed to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. But I think I was pretty certain about it then, and here we are now. It’s working out okay. [Laughs.]
Who was your cinematic crush then or now?
Oh gosh, now I have so many. Colin Firth. I love Colin Firth. I’ve never seen Mamma Mia, but I loved him in Bridget Jones’s Diary, Pride and Prejudice. And I mean, Frances McDormand is my forever screen crush.
When you were little, who did you have a crush on?
Well, I had kind of obscure taste. Fred Durst. From Limp Bizkit. Yeah, yeah, I had a poster of him that I ripped out of J-14 above my bed. I dug him. [Laughs.]
So you were a bit of a head banger as well?
No, no. I just think I thought he looked cool.
You liked tattoos?
I still love tattoos. I loved tattoos then, I still love them now. I don’t have any, though. There’s still time.
What was the first album you ever bought?
I think the first album I ever bought … Was Samantha Mumba too late? When was Samantha Mumba? I really loved Samantha Mumba. I wish I could remember any of her songs now, but I can remember exactly what the cover of her album looked like. I think that probably was the first CD I bought with my own money. The cover of her album was orange. She had a great outfit on it, that’s all I remember. I remember holding that CD and I kept it with me for such a long time. It meant a lot, the first one you buy yourself with allowance or babysitting money.
Definitely.
I also had a lot of, you know, Backstreet Boys, Aaron Carter, 98 Degrees.
No NSYNC?
I was a Backstreet girl, no NSYNC. That felt like sacrilege. You can’t like them both.
What is your karaoke song?
Well, singing scares the f—ing living daylights out of me, so I don’t karaoke much. “I Will Always Love You” [by Whitney Houston] is really good and gets better the drunker you are. I love Open Arms.” Journey’s always good. The Spice Girls. Oh, that was another album. I had all the Spice Girls albums. That’s a good karaoke song. Also gets better the drunker you get.
Most karaoke gets better the drunker you get.
That’s true. You get fearless.
Exactly. And where was your first kiss?
Oh my God. My first kiss was… Well, I don’t count this one, but my first actual kiss was in an Embassy Suites hotel room. My cousin and I met some boys and we were playing truth or dare and we sort of had a weird quick little kiss, but I don’t count that one. My first real kiss was in a slide on a playground with a boy that I liked when I was about 12 or 13.
That’s so cute.
We were in the middle of it. We managed to stop somehow in one of those big, tubular slides. It was very cute. It was yellow.
Wow, how romantic. Did he become your boyfriend?
No. [Laughs.] It was just a little crush. I was too young to have a real… I guess, now you’re not too young, but I felt too young then to have a real boyfriend. He was my sort of just my crush, and we kissed a little. I never told anyone that.
What’s your favorite Halloween costume you’ve ever had?
Well, so on the Austin Powers theme, when I was in fourth grade, I went as Vanessa Kensington.
No.
Yeah, and my mom made the costume for me. It was silver and had a little halter neck and some boots, some knee-highs. And I had my hair in like a cute little bump. People had no idea who I was. Nobody has any idea, I was explaining it all day long. It was epic, though.

Posting snippets from that WIP challenge post one at a time, part 6
((This WIP challenge post!
Today’s fic from the random draw is #19: Untitled document - Rugrats in Paris (but not a RiP fanfic)
Okay so... this is a doc/WIP where Steven has... feelings about his universe’s version of the movie Rugrats in Paris because of the plot around Chuckie and his desire for a mother he no longer has. (The inciting incident is that Steven questions Connie about a song he’s hearing through the phone and she tells him her cousins are watching the movie in the same room, at which point he feigns forgetting that song is in it when the truth is he’s never made it that far into the movie.)
A snippet:
Steven had never made it all the way through the "second theatrical adventure" for the Anklebiters.
The Anklebiters Movie? Sure! Anklebiters Go Natural? Why not?
But when it came to Anklebiters in Milan… well…
He'd begged his dad to rent it from the local video store, way back when--he'd known nothing of the plot, only that it was a fun adventure involving talking babies. And it had been fine! Fun, even!
...And then Buckie's story had reared its ugly, all-too-familiar head.
It had only taken until the "I Want a Mom" sequence for Greg to decide Steven had had more than enough, even if he was stubbornly insisting he could watch it just fine because he was a big boy now.
...I wish I could gain the inspiration to actually finish this, because “a kids’ movie comes out when Steven is young and Steven can’t handle it because of the dead mom part of the plotline” feels compelling. o_o
(The complete randomly generated order is this: 9, 2, 6, 10, 18, 19, 22, 20, 15, 8, 14, 26, 11, 17, 16, 23, 21, 1, 3, 12, 24, 5, 13, 25, 4, 7 FWIW XP)
