It's funny how he can go from respecting her even a little bit to wondering what it would be like to see her suffer the way he did. But she would deserve it, wouldn't she? Like the pogues she hangs out with, all of the assholes she spends time with, that she chooses over everyone else. She deserves it...

The one person he thought would never treat him like he's the black sheep, that he's a devil of some kind.

“I'm fine,”  She insisted—but insisting only further proved Rafe's point that Rachel needed to rest right because her voice gave away the fact that she was exhausted. She carefully placed their sleeping daughter in her crib then turned to Rafe, who she beamed at with tired eyes, and advanced toward him, arms wrapping around his middle as she propped her chin on his chest to look up at him through her lashes.  “…promise, but I will... after I clean up the kitchen. I won't say no to your help though.”  Stubborn as always. At least she's trying to compromise this time around though.

But Topper was possessive, and when she would change her mind he'd get angry. Sarah wasn't sure how to feel about it - other than confused and uncertain as well as self conscious.

But now...things were different.

[ mistletoe ] a playful or romantic kiss under a mistletoe - from rafe (he said he wanted his girl)

They're miles and miles away from Kildare, half-way across the world— because she has always wanted to see and he has always wanted to show her it —and she wondered how and when they were going to get into the holiday spirit and celebrate Christmas, especially with the weather wherever they are being less snow and more sun, even in December.

He always found a way though, and that shouldn't have surprised her, but it did.

“I think... I've softened you a little bit,” She teased in a murmur seconds before she pressed her lips to kiss, eyes fluttering closed as she first cradled his face then wrapped her arms around his neck. Her heart soon began to pound in her chest, just like the first time they kissed, just like every time they kissed and she couldn't help but press her frame into his.

When she pulled away, she was breathless and speechless, and only capable of blushing and grinning until she looked up at him.  “Where did you even find mistletoe?”

❝ I doubt my dad would dare let Rose send me anywhere.❞ She hates to admit it, but she knows that when it comes to her dad she has him wrapped around her finger. And Rose has no real authority over anyone in this house. The only one that actually tries to show her respect to the fullest is Wheezie. But Rose is the only mother figure that Wheezie has had in her life for awhile now. Sarah and Rafe however ... ? They have their mother's memories and Rose can't even hold a candle to that.

❝ The boys ? ❞ she realizes she never asked about Kie's friend circle before. She knows that when it comes to school that Kie seems to have her own style, flaire, and the others don't seem to get that. Sarah however is drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

❝ Mm, bring anything you'd like, your favorite movie obviously unless it's on a streaming platform, then we can bring that up if you'd prefer. And Rafe will probably be out with his friends.❞ She may need to beg him to go out and stay out ...

"Photos it is, then." She replies with a smile. "I don't want to send your step mom to an asylum and you to a boarding school." Kiara tries to hold back a chuckle. "Like that sculpture in the entry hall? That needs the eyes for sure." She grins.

"Okay, I think it sounds like a good plan. Now to get the parents on board. I'm sure they'll be happy that I'm hanging out with anyone but the boys, so I really do think that it'll be fine." She shrugs. "Okay, okay. . ." She shakes her head. "No stepping on the Kie." There's a laugh. "I don't think being stepped on is something I'd enjoy."

Tapping her pen against her notebook, she looks at Sarah. "So, movie, any snacks or anything I should bring? I want to contribute. And you said that Rafe won't be here, right?" But, it wouldn't be terrible if he was, right? Okay, maybe it would be terrible if he saw me in my pj's. . . . Maybe not, though. Oh my God, Kiara.

"What reason?" He asks as he looks to John B and he motions around as though he's trying to find the answer to his question somewhere in the air. " Do I really need a reason to fuck with a bunch of kooks who would rather talk out their asses instead of put up or shut up?" he asks John B, who seems to now suddenly have some moral high ground.

Okay, truthfully he's always had one when it comes to not starting anything and it's usually JJ pushing the button. So he takes a moment and sighs, dragging his hands down his face.

" They were talking shit about the girls, dude. And I was being a good guy, defending their honor the only way I knew how in a case of one verses three. I wasn't going to throw punches, I'd fucking lose. So...I opted for plan B."

"Oh, just one notch?" He yanks JJ by the collar of his shirt and closes the door. What the fuck, JJ? He doesn't even have to say it out loud before his best friend is spilling the beans. "So, you pissed a bunch of kooks off for what reason? And then you ran here? I mean, dude. That's pretty - - -." Stupid, is what it is. "Did they make you mad? Did they taunt you? Why did you do it? I mean, give me a reason here."

𝐇𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲, be it for his own behavior or his own emotional state that drives him to do things that are a little more on the crazy side than most. But Kiara is always there. Through the good, the bad, the ugly, and the incredibly stupid. Truth be told he wouldn't blame her one bit if she took her foot out of the Pogue pool and wen right back to Kookland.

And as much as he claims to not care, the truth is when it comes to her he'd walk through fire and she wouldn't even need to ask him to do it, he simply would.

Sitting quietly with her on the docks, he carefully slips his arm around her waist and pulls her close. The fact that she puts herself in the firing range of her family for them constantly - he doesn't think that a 'thank you' is ever going to be good enough. Words are not JJ's specialty. If his mix up of French and Spanish wasn't evident of that.

But he moves his thumb in circles against her side and he pulls her close, letting her use his shoulder for as long as she needs. While no one looks to JJ to be the watcher, the protector -- when it comes to Kie he will be those very things she needs.

At least, he's going to try.
