Manwe is nobody's best friend, but he's everyone's friend. He gets along with Varda's high-powered colleagues and Tulkas's wrestling team buddies with the same earnest sincerity, and if he's sometimes a biiit of a joke for that earnestness, it's a friendly, affectionate joke.

Melkor, on the other hand, is only tolerated by everybody else because Manwe insists on including him in stuff, and he spends every low-key hang alternayle seething in a corner because he knows no one actually likes him (and calling them all fake and two-faced under his breath every time they try to politely include him in the conversation), and messing around with whatever electronics and chemicals he can find to see if he can blow something up. Finally everyone puts their foot down after the third party where he stole the aux cord without asking and started blaring facist Nordic death metal in the middle of a song people were trying to dance to (he also did this with the accompaniment at one of Nessa's recitals, but she rolled with it and interpretively danced about burning down churches, which he is still mad about), and after Tulkas managed to wrestle the cord away from him he was banned.

Manwe is the only one who still talks to him, and it just makes him madder.

those modern AUs that have melkor as the party boy slash most popular kid of his high school and manwë as the nerdy, silent wallflower hiding in his brother’s shadow? nonsense. actual angband propaganda that melkor wants everyone to believe. if anything, melkor is the weirdo sulking in the corner while manwë is the golden retriever kind of person with natural charm and charisma, the valedictorian / class president / editor-in-chief of the school newspaper all mixed into one, popular with both the jocks and the nerds and everyone in between
