Fanfic Writer Asks!

22: describe your writing process from scratch to finish.

It's honestly rather straight forward even though I can take so long lmao. Ideas come from either prompt memes, fests, or random things I see that make me think/discuss headcanons. As soon as I have an idea, I make an outline of sorts.

This outline is sometimes a sentence long "these are the vibes" thing, or just two bullet points with "they run into each other. they get high. they kiss." or, if I'm particularly busy, I'll make a long detailed outline on paper during class. (So many boring lectures spent making wayyy too detailed outlines.) Like, those are easily 4-6 pages for a single oneshot or chapter.

Then the writing is kinda just, sprinting while filling out the blanks? With that really detailed outline, that's pretty easy honestly. Everything's there, I just have to string it together. Most of my writing is done through sprints (either in discord or just timing on my phone) so I can keep track of how long I'm writing.

Editing is either forgotten, or I send it to 1-3 people to betaread and almost blindly accept all their improvements.

For chaptered fics I also try to keep track of like, details I mention while writing? Like character descriptions of smaller characters or little events that happened. (like, I describe Emma Vanity as a plump girl with jet black hair in one chapter, so next chapter she should preferably not to be blonde, yknow)

This is all broken up by endless procrastinating, taking walks with playlists that remind me of the fic, and sending my friends excepts going "look at my dumbass children"

41: what is the weirdest story idea you’ve ever had.

There are two contenders. One is a strange Narcissa/James/Sirius/Lily/Remus Ballerina AU I was somehow talking about with @stonecoldhedwig (yes, yes all of them. at the same time. idek.) it never got written and maybe that's for the best.

The other is a Minerva McGonagall/Horace Slughorn forniphilia fic. This came about during a discussion with irl friends and I ended up writing and posting it as a Christmas gift. I made a whole new account just to post it. It's terrible. She's a cat at one point. It's here if anyone feels like dying inside.

That same account is going to hold more weird crack fics, though. I've posted a Wario/Taylor Swift/Sportacus fic, and I'm planning a Jane Austen/Matt Healy/Adam Groff fic. These are all gifts for my friends for either Christmas or birthdays. Not sure why.

4: How many different styles/medium (e.g., digital art, traditional art, comics, sculpture, paper craft, etc.) did you try this year?

If we're just counting visual arts, honestly not too many? It was a very digital year for me, which is unusual (and very much related to like. Actually getting more comfortable with digital art than I used to be). Just looking at what's posted on Tumblr, I did a little bit of traditional pencil and a few watercolors, all of which were doodles that I decided I liked enough to post. And then a LOT of digital painting.

5: What work are you most proud of (regardless of likes/reblogs)?

So I was going to say this art of Jazz:

but then I realized I actually finished it in 2021 but didn't post it until 2022 because it was for a DnD thing that hadn't happened yet. And now I'm realizing that I have like, three other art pieces I'm proud of from this year that I can't show off yet for similar reasons, haha. So the one I'm proudest of that I actually painted this year would have to be this drawing of Level 20 Pal:

I'm really happy with the colors, the way the skirt flows (I spent SO much time looking at reference images of ballerinas trying to see how skirts move when someone is jumping) and just in general how the whole thing came together.

Hey Mystery! I hope you're doing good, friend ❤ So, first of all I have to say your Sonic Wachowski headcanons are great! And I would like to see some more: I don't know about you, but I really like to believe Sonic is an extremely multi-talented guy. So I gotta ask, could you list Sonic Wachowski's biggest talents?

Talents, you say? I’d imagined that he’s got several talents that he loves to share with the people that he loves!

Even though Sonic lives with Tom and Maddie, he still practices his tracking skills and survival skills in the forest. He knows how to track—scent and sound and footprint, how to build shelters, make a fire, purify water so he can drink it, camouflage, and make traps if needed.

Sonic loves to reinact scenes from movies, he secretly thinks that it would be cool to act in movies and some Broadway plays with the celebrities that he loves. He’s a very talented actor.

He’s got a beautiful singing voice! He loves to sing to himself, as well to anyone who will listen. He sings when he’s happy, he sings when he’s sad. What to listen for is the song that he sings, he will sing Elton John when he’s feeling happy, Jodi Mitchell when he’s sad, but he loves Green Day and sings that all the time!

Sonic is knowledgeable in communicating with the animals in the forest. He recognizes their “language” when it comes to what each animal encounters in the forest and can respond back. If he hears coos, he will coo back. If he hears chirps, he chirps back. This is very useful when he works with Maddie at the clinic.

Human language is his second language. Sonic learned how to speak English only recently and loves to talk about how he taught himself when he was younger.

Sonic loves to draw pictures of his family, as well as write short stories to share with them from his journal. He’s an excellent artist and a talented writer!

Sonic has some mad skills when it comes to him dancing! Yes very talented in breakdancing, as well as doing some meme dances to cheer people up when they’ve had a bad day.

Sonic is very good at stand-up comedy. He loves to do a form of storytelling comedy for his audience to enjoy. It comes naturally to him since he’s only been with himself for ten-odd years and had no one to talk to.

Sonic likes to pride himself in being a graceful ballerina. He claims that he can balance items on his head, walk on a tight rope, and strike a mean pose while balancing himself on the picket fence. Tom and Maddie would tell you a very different story and inform you on how great their catching skills are when it comes to catching their falling son.

Sonic has a great talent for busting Tom’s chops. He’s just doing his role of “son” the best way he knows how... and he does it a little too well.

Sonic is very good at any sport that involves a ball... because he is the ball. Basketball, soccer, bowling, American football, anything with a ball.

He’s also very talented at baseball! He just loves the sport and makes a home run every time he hits!

Sonic is also very gifted in playing air guitar! His take on Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin is phenomenal! It always leaves Tom teary-eyed!

Sonic can also juggle... and he loves to juggle items that are breakable and the most expensive. Everyone hide your cellphones, glass items, and personal belongings.

The Blue Devil is an excellent driver! All of the tricks shown in The Fast and Furious movies—hes got no problem replicating!

Our loveable Space hog has a talent for making the worst tasting baked goods in history, though Tom and Maddie don’t have the heart to tell him. Sonic likes to make them “unique.” He will put bugs, basic ingredients, a paper clip might end up in there on occasion—he’ll get distracted and burn them. He even goes a bit overboard with the icing and likes to douse it with hot sauce for extra flavor. He loves them, but wishes that Tom and Maddie are the whole cupcake that he’s made rather than taking a bite of it and saving it for later.

Sonic is also an amazing storyteller. Due to living on his own, he had to find ways to entertain himself before he started collecting his beloved possessions. He would tell the elaborate stories of his clan teachings, of his time in Earth, and he made his own stories of how he fought crime with Donut Lord in the past... even being adopted by him in the end. It’s always a happy ending for him. He’s also written fanfiction before of him and Keanu Reeves.

Sonic is also very creative when it comes to problem solving. He loves to listen to the queries of what people are stricken with and he loves to help find a way to fix them. He’s very wise for his age.

Sonic has tried multiple times with The Donut Lord to fit a whole donut in his mouth. The Space Hog can eat a chili-dog in one bite, but struggles to shove a whole donut in his mouth like his idol. However, he can fit eight munchkin holes in his mouth, hence the name “Munchkin Lad” Tom gave him that same day.

So it’s finals week

I have a final that was technically Wednesday, but because it was a teaching philosophy (one page, single-spaced paper), she decided to cancel the final and have us turn it in online, due Friday.

So I’ve known about this for weeks. One might even say months. Or even almost exactly two months.

I am just now writing it. Even though I had zero anything yesterday and definitely could have written it, I chose to wait until the day before it was due. After working from 8am-3pm. When I should definitely be studying for my dance final tomorrow because I missed the day that we learned the end and have to figure it out from a video which was taken behind the teach and it’s hard for me to decipher some of that fancy ballerina footwork (I mean, it’s not actually fancy, but okay). Side note: My cat is cute.

Halsey. Her albums have depicted our similar emotional development arcs and I pretty much worship the ground she walks on. Mad respect for kpop groups like BTS and GOT7 though, seeing as they have to go through so much extra shit in the Korean entertainment industry to achieve their dreams and that’s also mega inspiring.

the time is here. the time is now. on a waterfall cast by his gyarados, a pillar wreathed in vines from his lurantis’ grass knot, he rises slowly from the water into the air as the contest theme plays behind him. he’s perfectly dry, surrounded by the glow of milotic’s aqua ring bubble that encases him. the waterfall wave washes ashore on a platform rising in the middle of the pool and he steps down; the aqua ring follows him, outlining his exact form and giving him a blue glow as he moves and the contest theme dims in volume. he turns to address the crowd, and as he opens his mouth to speak, the aqua ring shines even brighter. behind him, his gyarados and milotic’s necks rise out of the water and bow together in the shape of a heart, with the tiny lurantis ballerina posing with one foot on each of their heads: two water-types and one alolan pokémon to say farewell to this watery alolan contest.

❝ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived!❞ he said. ❝the scores have been finalized, and now it’s time to announce the recipients of this year’s  prizes! please direct your attention to a screen to see once again what our three winners and three honorable mentions will take home.❞

on cue, the screens to either side of him show the prizes. next to each is a blank space for the name of the person who would be taking that prize home.

there’s a drumroll on the speakers, and the waves roll accordingly. the shining ring around wallace’s form disappears, allowing the names of the winners to take center stage, as this was their moment, not his. with a sweep of his arm he gestures to the board--right on cue, underneath each prize heading, the names and point values of each contestant appear in showers of dark and light blue sparks. the overall rankings of the battle segment also appear on the side.

a closed box that supposedly contains the ribbon drifts out of the water inside yet another aqua ring, an ornate white encasement inlaid with solid gold. it hovers in the air for all the crowd to admire, then makes its way into wallace’s outstretched hands. with a radiant smile he shakes kamui’s hand and pulls her into a hug, then opens the box to reveal the most important prize that she would take home today.

the ribbon. it’s gone. and whoever took it left a bright blue lipstick kiss on the box’s side--mocking INSOLENCE, audacity the likes of which only one person he knew would dare show him--

sawyer harris, reborn region ace, had made off with the wallace cup ribbon behind his back…! he should’ve known something was too good to be true when the ruffian refused to cause trouble. he’d been saving it, wallace thinks, for the moment when it truly mattered, for a stunt that would get attention without completely risking sawyer’s international reputation. the empty ribbon case, the lipstick on the side, and wallace’s shocked expression would bring on a flood of mockery and memes for years to come, instead of horrified anger and shock at the body of a murdered contestant. he should have known far ahead that this would be the caliber of sawyer’s troublemaking--perhaps he is reading too much into this, but his mind, so precise in its deductive reasoning yet so blinded by his bias, can think of nothing else. that sneaky son of a…!

he isn’t gonna lie, he thought it was harley at first, but he knows his ex well enough to know that he doesn’t use that shade of lipstick.

slowly he lowers the empty case, and once again he flashes his picture-perfect smile. 

❝…so sorry about that.❞ he says, and places a hand on kamui’s  shoulder. ❝i’ll have a new one made for you shortly. but in the end, it’s only a ribbon. whether you have it in your hand or not does not change anything about what you achieved.❞

he turns to address the crowd once again. ❝and that, ladies and gentlemen, is all. thank you from the bottom of my heart for attending and participating--i declare this year’s wallace cup to be officially CONCLUDED!❞

the contest theme changes its tune and gets louder as he steps out onto thin air, hands behind his back and one leg extended in front of him. a waterfall rises to catch him as he falls. another aqua ring blooms from the pillar and surrounds him in a glowing orb as he descends into the pool and waves to the cheering crowd. with one final shock to his nerves the contest ends, and when he swims backstage he slumps against the wall, exhausted.

i’m bad at coming up with questions so i’m not going to do the 10 questions. but i am going to answer the questions that were listed. also this is an open tag, so anyone who wants to do it can do it.

1) We always talk about favorites. What’s your least favorite book?

hmmm. one book i’ve always hated is the scarlett letter. we read it in school and it was awful.

2) Do you have a favorite place to write? What’s it like there?

i didn’t really have a favorite place to write until recently. a few months ago i finally got a desk and i’ve been in love with it ever since. 

very, very cluttered. there’s all kinds of stuff piled on it. on one side i’ve got soda cans, plastic bottles, my phone; the other side is junk food, my glasses case, a couple of necklaces. i have an old sugar plum fairie barbie on the top shelf that i tried to sell, that nobody wanted even though i had it for like $5 (i might post a picture of it later bc it’s super pretty).

3) Do you have any artistic endeavors other than writing? If not, what else would you most like to learn to do?

back before the writing bug really bit me, i used to draw all the time. now i barely ever draw unless i get really inspired. 

hmmm, i don’t know. maybe sign up for duolingo and learn other languages?? other than that i don’t know.

4) What’s your favorite holiday? Why? Have you ever written a story involving that holiday?

halloween is my favorite, followed closely by christmas just bc i love the tacky decorations and the music and the movies and pretty much everything about it. 

looool i have tried to write fics involving these holidays, but they never come out how i want them to and i’ve kind of given up on it. 

5) How do you fight writer’s block?

silly answer: drink so much caffeine i ascend to the astral plane to get advice from the writing gods.

actual answer: there’s not really an easy way to answer this. sometimes i see writing posts that are like, “you have to write every day!!” and i’m thinking y’know that’s not always possible. whether i’m out of inspiration/ideas, or i’m in a depression spiral, or i’m tired from work, or maybe i’m just not feeling that particular project. it’s not a sin to need a break from your wips, bc even though it’s happy work it’s still work. and there’s no shame in needing to take a breather to get yourself sorted out. 

on days when i’m ready to write, i do different things to get myself pumped up for my wips. i’ll make playlists, make aesthetic boards, sometimes i torture my mutuals with rambles about my ocs or tag them with little excerpts from the project. i really like making an aesthetic tag so i can go and look at all the pretty stuff that makes me think of the wip, so i can remind myself why i want to write it in the first place.

6) At what point in a WIP do you decide to send it to your first beta readers/reviewers?

probably not until i’m at least done with a second draft. the first draft needs to have all those plot holes filled, all those loose threads woven back together, characters need developing. showing a beta reader my first draft would be like taking a person to a room filled with beginning sketches of people where they’re still just shapes instead of having any defining features. 

7) What’s your greatest inspiration?

i don’t think i have one lol.

8) A lot of writers have certain things they like to describe - food, clothes, fights, party scenes. What’s your favorite thing to describe?

emotional scenes where characters talk about their problems and they hug and maybe even cry. i’m a terrible person.

9) What’s your approximate ratio of reading to writing? How do you find time for both? Do you do both on the same day, or split it up?

you’re going to judge me for this, but i haven’t been reading actual books lol. the last few months i’ve just been reading fanfic oneshots with like the occasional multichapter fic thrown in. my attention span has been terrible.

10) What books would you recommend to someone to get them into reading?

i think it depends on the person. what i might find compelling, someone else might find super boring.

i don’t really like writing stuff that doesn’t have some kind of paranormal element. so i guess i’d say my writing enemy that i like reading is real world drama. 

my favorite books that are like idk period pieces i guess?? are Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice. 

as for stuff that’s based in more recent times, there’s a ya series i really like called tiny pretty things that’s about a group of ballerinas competing against each other for spots for prima ballerina?? and there’s a lot of drama and backstabbing. it’s kind of a dark series. 

2. What book would you love to see turned into a movie or tv show? Any particular reasons why?

i can’t think of anything right now. maybe green angel by alice hoffman?

3. Have you ever written a character with a certain real-life person in mind. Was it someone you know in real life or someone famous?

some of my ocs were originally based off acquaintances, but as i kept writing them the characters changed so much that they became pretty much unrecognizable. 

4. If your latest WIP had a color scheme, what would it be?

paper heart would be red, orange, pink, and purple. the colors of a sunset with the threat of darkness falling over everything. 

5. What do you eat or drink while writing (if anything)?

s’mores poptarts if i’m too lazy to get up and fix myself something. chips. different sodas: cherry coke, sunkist, grape fanta. 

6. What do you do to restore your inspiration when you’re not writing?

watch movies/tv shows. listen to podcasts or music. look at cool pictures. 

7. Coffee, Tea, Booze, or ALL THREE?

coffee and booze. i’m not a big fan of tea.

uhhhh, does studio ghibli count? their artwork is so appealing to look at.

i’m trying to think of what paper heart would be, but i’m drawing a blank. this needs to be its own game where someone else guesses what movies your wip is the lovechild of.

cheering on and also being cheered on during the writing process. getting to read all these wonderful stories written by wonderful people. knowing other people are suffering just as much as i am lol.

i wish i could answer this question with the dedication it deserves. i feel like their blogs would have a lot of memes and shitposts with some aesthetic stuff thrown in. 

7. If you could write an adaptation of any story, which would it be?   

while i have zero desire to write an adaptation for a story, i’ve always liked the idea of a movie version of Green Angel by Alice Hoffman. mostly bc it’s surreal, a little weird, post apocalyptic, and it would just look really cool.

8. What common writing tips never work for you? And/or what uncommon advice do you swear by? 

anything that’s like, “if you don’t write everyday, you’re not a real writer!!” like chill dude. just bc i’m not cranking out 1,000 words a day like some lean, mean, writing machine doesn’t mean i’m not dedicated to what i’m doing. 

9. Do you research before, during, or after writing sessions? 

it depends. sometimes i get to a point in a fic where i’m like, “uh oh” and i go into a research spiral trying to find this one specific thing. thinking ah yes, this is the specific thing i need at this very moment that i probably could do without.

10. Have you had a writing epiphany that totally revamped your WIP?

if only. there were a few game changers in the next three days series that changed things for the better:

- the way carter and matteo first met lmao. 

- violet’s existence. 

- sage rescuing and then leaving violet and carter. 

- carter and nina’s bromance. 

- alec and carter, and also joe and matteo being siblings.

- tiffany seeing ghosts.

depression rambling

i am so sad. i’m just so fucking sad. most of the time it’s numbness and all that depression jazz, but there are moments (or minutes, or hours, or days, etc.) where I’m just so, so, purely sad. I was just watching a video about ballerinas and was just hit with the overwhelming failure that is me as a dancer. I would be able to dance better but I can’t stop myself from gorging every edible object I see and I can’t pull myself out of bed long enough to even take a shower. I need to memorize two and a half more pages of my monologue for theatre class, as well as a song for the musical auditions next week, and not only do i need to memorize a duo scene for the auditions, but i need to find someone to audition with my sorry ass. i just feel so goddamn overwhelmed by  e v e r y t h i n g  in my life and I just had a 4-day weekend to spend ample time sitting around doing nothing as well as scrapbooking and reading self-love posts, but i still feel like i need time to just have a huge-ass pity party. it’s like i always have this huge lump in my throat, and it’ll go away if i spend a week sitting around, eating, and transitioning only between sad poetry and memes, but then after i throw away a week of my life doing just that, the lump is back and it’s a school night and i can’t get rid of it so i just stay up late in an attempt to try getting rid of this awful lump in my life that’s now really consuming my life and i never shower or brush my teeth anymore and i cant remember the last time i wore my retainer and my floor is covered in papers and there are tupperware containers left over from late night binges sitting in my bed and depression is not glamorous. (my) depression is unbearable hopelessness and a fear of facing your actual life that makes it hard to breathe. it’s one second being really motivated as you enter dance class and the next second drifting to the back and biting back tears as you think about self-harming because you accidentally stepped on someone’s toe. it’s throwing away your schoolwork, your relationships with your friends, and your most basic personal hygiene. it’s fear. it’s dread. it’s pain. it’s hopelessness. it’s numbness. it’s sadness. it’s all of that and so much fucking more gods i hate depression. i wish i had medication because right now it feels like no part of me can save me but i’m too gods dam scared to tell my parents that i need help. they think i’m fine. they think i’m a happy teenager who just sometimes gets really tired and won’t talk to anyone and will instead stare off into the distance and stay in her room for a week and not smile. except they don’t see how much worse it gets when they’re upstairs watching football and i’m curled on the bathroom floor crying, or after my dad tells me that when i give short answers to his questions and act uninterested it makes him sad and that im really rude and then starts doing the dishes and i start silently crying and he looks at me and says “turn the lights off before you go upstairs” and leaves and i curl over and sob and i sit at the piano and learn one chord and i go upstairs and put on pajamas and then sit in between the shower curtains on the side of my bathtub and cut myself for the first time. yeah. i’m just a normal teenager.
