「 01. During their younger days, between Tōichi and herself, Chikage is, funny enough, the more grounded one of the pair. Her upbringing is partly the cause behind her ‘not at all rosy-tinted’ worldwide, being a little more uptight and mistrustful, and expecting the worse outcome in anything that dealt with her life as a phantom thief. In Chikage’s eyes, Tōichi was someone who liked to take things rather calmly, often bordering on carelessness ( which his poor assistant had to either clean up or deal with in another way or two ); like a young master with too much free time on his hands, and was only impressive with things that involved magic tricks.

Tōichi, on the other hand, meant that she was seldom without duress — even when she’s smiling as though unperturbed ( carrying the very picture of a dauntlessness and intuitive woman ), she looked like she was often burdened by something, yet never allowed herself some room for rest. It was difficult to believe she hadn’t collapsed yet. 」

「 02. A headcanon I have for Tōichi’s past is that he really was that kind of ‘lost child becomes young apprentice’ and traveled around the world with James Hopper, after the latter found him and decided to take him under his wings. Tōichi went everywhere with the magician and, through the years, much quickly became versed in the arts of magic tricks, sleight of hand, and stage performance already as a teen ( and among other less honorable arts of deception which he picked up himself, e.g. poker ), thanks to his unusual sharp wit and quick-thinking.

Going from the distrustful, desolate and despondent child that he was during the beginning stages of his apprenticeship, Tōichi gradually grew up to become a more cheeky and seemingly carefree, but charming youth, who both enjoyed mischief but knew how to conduct himself courteously. And he continues to be so as a young adult, when he picks up the habit of his mentor and takes Konosuke Jii under his wings.

But with that said, Tōichi didn’t have the faintest clue of who his birth parents were or their whereabouts, but he assumed for the longest time that they probably didn’t want him ( for whatever reason behind it ). And whether they were still alive or not, he couldn’t tell. 」

「 03. Yūsaku was pretty young when he had his first case by accident. It was entirely unfortunate, having run into a situation that was neither safe, nor showed any signs of ever ending. People could only sit and wait with bated breath, praying for the terrorists that held them all hostage to ignore them and let their lives to be spared.

Yūsaku was only 11, his parents shielding him in their arms, both appearing scared but dedicated to stay strong for him, even if it was difficult. In an unexpected way, they all lived through the hostage situation, with some casualties ( some worser than others ) but no lives taken. The police riot and some chief officers came in time to dissuade the crisis, but as for what happened before they arrived, none were the wiser.

When Yūsaku told this story to Megure Jūzō, years later and after he had helped the TMPD with a number of complex cases, the yet-to-be-inspector was surprised that the young man had experienced something as traumatic in a small age. Yūsaku shrugged, wearing a distant and reminiscent-tinted smile. He told his friend that he hadn’t shared this story with anyone, and that he couldn’t remember much aside from confronting the terrorists and scaring half of the souls out of his parents. 」
