Epic!Hera having a Groovy 70/80's aesthetic is something i really love, since i'm used to seen her being despicted as a very regal goddess, so seen her dancing and posing in the animatic of God Games was a pretty funny and original to me.

Crazy thing is that is not even the first time i see Hera with this type of vibe, since Destripando la Historia used the song "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" by ABBA as inspiration for Hera's song, wich was released in 1979 and is very catchy and upbeat song. I guess musicians just read about Hera and somehow get very Grooby vibes from her.

Now, we all love noble and heroic good guys. But sometimes, in the safe confines of fiction, nothing is as fun as a really trash man. Here is a description of our trash contestants:

Shen Yurong, The Double

Pros: really good at exams, flute playing and being a murderous sub.

Cons: terrible at wife murder (tho perhaps that's a plus?), moral backbone of a sponge, sis and mom would make bad in laws.

Murong Xuanlie, Kill Me Love Me

Pros: looks really good with hair loose, big on women having careers outside the home, devoted to one woman only, great kisser.

Cons: murdered 100K+ people, wants to be a fratricide, gaslight girlboss gatekeep is his motto.

Second Prince, Joy of Life 2

Pros: swing in the middle of his house, likes chess and fruit, funny.

Cons: can't decide if he wants to fuck or fuck over Fan Xian; indecisiveness is not sexy in a man.

Di Lin, Eternal Brotherhood

Pros: loving husband, great friend, victorious general, makes toys for his unborn kids.

Cons: royal executioner who puts cities and armies and families to the sword, the soap and water bills for all that blood will be huge.

Honestly blood of Zeus season 2 almost be pulling a Lore Olympus with Hades and Persephone being a scheming couple who feel thwarted by the gods (and possibly demeter we'll see) and they just want to be together but fate won't let them. Also Zagreus is there! So we're just getting all the Greek myth stuff this month huh with LO ending, Hades ii, and blood of Zeus.

so I literally JUST heard about this from my husband, funnily enough, and uh... yeah, I'm pretty bummed to hear they went the "Demeter was a terrible mom" route. Like at this point it's not even original or refreshing, it would ironically be MORE refreshing to see them just stick with the original material's messaging because so few people seem to want to do it these days 😭😔 That said, I do still wanna give the show a full watch, I don't have a Netflix subscription anymore but we do have it at work so I'll prolly pop it on next time I get a turn on the tube LOL I've heard great things about it, it's just become such an automatic pet peeve of mine now whenever I see H x P retellings IMMEDIATELY go for the "Demeter was a terrible mom!" thing with like, zero nuance LOL (but idk, that's just what I've heard, I haven't watched the show yet so maybe my opinion will change when I do, we'll see :'0)

Hades after seeing Wednesday: Huh. Which one is that??? What???

Do any of you ever wonder if Camp Half-Blood accidentally brought in a demigod of a different pantheon before?

This would be especially hilarious if it happens sometime after The Last Olympian/Heroes of Olympus, where the gods are required to claim their kids quickly.

A whole day passes, and the new demigod needs to sleep in the Hermes Cabin and Percy is furious. Meanwhile, the Greek Gods are pointing at each other and shouting, contacting the most obscure of mini gods. Chaos erupts on Olympus as every deity in Greek Mythology is called upon and interrogated. Hermes hasn't run around so much in centuries.

Hecate sits in silence, fully aware of what's happening, but enjoying the show too much to intervene.

Ok so

Earlier this last year (right around when I posted the Raph carrying Mikey art) I got into a jokey angst battle with someone on TikTok. They said it was so sad. He was correct in that observation. They said they'd strike me with lightning, I retaliated with the threat to draw angst of his favourite turt. He threatened to sick Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades on me. Hahah, so much fun! So silly!

Only issue is…. I took it seriously. Aaaand drew some heart-wrenching angst for the guy. Aaaaaaaaaaand only after I finished it did I realize I misread the situation, and he was only joking and thought I was only joking and prolly would see my friendly fire of art as something not so friendly. So. Uh. I didn’t post it on TikTok.

He is the only god (besides Apollo) that was intelligent from the moment he was born (escaping from his cradle, went to Pieiria, and carried off Apollo’s cows and tricking him, then making the first lyre.) His role as a psychopomp is also underrated

In terms of her abilities, do you think Hera’s power is on par with Poseidon and Hades? (This question is prompted from seeing a claim that “she arguably can” from a reddit post detailing most of Hera’s abilities found here and here )

Honestly I've always found it very difficult to compare the gods (let alone rank them) in terms of power level since their power can manifest in such different ways and their abilities can vary from source to source. Take the Gigantomachy for example, Hera is shown to defeat her opponent in some artistic representations and I saw that used as an argument for how powerful she is since she allegedly did it with no help, but she is also the only god to be overpowered by a Gigas (Porphyrion) and needs to be helped by Zeus and Herakles. I don't believe that makes her weak, of course, just pointing out that the extent of a god's power can depend on what the narrative needs. Another example: sometimes she can inflict madness by herself, but in Euripides' Herakles she needs Lyssa to do it.

Thanks for showing me those threads, it's nice to see so many excerpts collected. And there are more parts too! She is definitely more powerful than many people who reduce her to only the marriage goddess and scorned wife of Zeus give her credit for.

Still, I'd hesitate to call Hera the most powerful Olympian after Zeus as this person does. Quite sure that if one gathered all evidence regarding the power and abilities of Athena, Apollo or Poseidon to name the other gods I consider to be the strongest contenders for that title they would appear just as impressive. Like sure, Apollo and Athena respect Hera, obey her and would never try to harm her, but is that because she is more powerful than them or because she is their father's wife/queen and their elder? And sure, in one version of their rivalry over Argos Hera makes Poseidon take back the punishment he inflicted on the land, but in the variants where he dries out the rivers (including the father of Hera's nurses) instead of flooding the place, she seems unable to fix it.

On par with Hades and Poseidon though? Quite possible. I do consider Poseidon more powerful than Hades, mostly based on the scene in the Iliad where Hades is terrified when Poseidon enters into battle, and I would not find it implausible for Hera to be more powerful than Hades as well (she never asks him for permission or assistance when making use of Underworld creatures) but then, Hades doesn't get much chance to show his power and abilities in the myths so maybe I'm underestimating him.

Analyzing the Dethklok boys and their relation to Gods

So I've recently gotten into Metalocalypse and was kinda upset that no one in my vicinity has either not heard or cares about this show enough to yap and analyze it with me but then I remembered that I have a Tumblr just collecting dust and this is a perfect place to just...talk. But anyway going back to the whole purpose of this post I wanted to touch on the boys pretty literal godhood presented in the show and how it reflects on their character and their backstories starting with...

Toki Wartooth

Starting off with one of the easiest to analyze since he arguably has the most lore present to the viewer. Throughout the series, toki is presented as the most childish as well as the most emotional of the group with parallels to the angle of death sprinkled everywhere. It's prophesized that anyone he loves or finds dear kicks the bucket with the boys being an exception (since IMO their prophecy and own godlike powers kinda cancel it out). Whether it is that child fan whom he was unironically doing the favor of declining her until the last second or his own father- everyone he loves either dies or never progresses in life (i.e. Dr.Rockso). By nature he is a bad omen who particularly gets canceled out by another member- I'll get into that shut up- but also has weird relations with the big man upstairs, Jesus Christ. His appearance is even similar to that of him and in scenes of his childhood where he's being heavily abused by his parents, you can see parallels of the lashings on his back. When being tortured by Magnus alongside Abigail they are crucified and put into the position Jesus once was in. [Also, sidenote I find it interesting how he deals with stressful situations either by tweaking or age-regressing by having Pickles be his caretaker. Since you can see him slowly regress through the series (no he did not regress all of a sudden after being saved you can clearly see how he regresses throughout the series, and I stand on that bruh) but regresses hard during the aftermath.]

Skwisgaar Skwigelf

Being the adonis he is, I think Skwisgaar represents life to counter Toki's roots in death. His appearance replicating common ideals of angels paired with his height and canonical attractiveness, Skwisgaar is truly a seductress of all sorts. To the point, I get huge Zeus feelings from him (hell it was kinda pushed into our faces during the episode showing how many children he's fathered). His learned skill contrasts itself with Toki's raw talent and has a constant clash- going back to the fact that they represent death and life respectively. I think their constant fighting kinda represents the back and forth between life and death, and those small tidbits where they do show compassion towards each other are a display of how one couldn't exist without the other. It's the fear of Toki possibly getting better than him that pushes Skwisgaar to be on top of shit and it's Skwisgaar's superiority complex and constant snubbing of Toki that pushes the other to battle for the same position. It's another interesting thing how they both deal with their traumas differently. as I truly believe Skwisgaar is prolly hypersexual due to being constantly exposed to well.. sex. And when he's not pondering on that aspect of his life then he's parading around his guitar skills as another coping method. I mean his guitar is LITERALLY part of him 24/7.

Nathan Explosion

Saw a bunch of discussions/debates on what Nathan could be, ranging from power, love, and rage (tbh that's more William than anything). And I think it's a mixture. Nathan is the only member of Dethklok to actually seem to have a stable background out of all of the band, also being the only member consistently in non-one note relationships. And while he does divulge himself groupies he seems to be genuinely interested in having long-term relationships as seen with him getting ready to propose to Abigail (which I honestly think he didn't really want to, he just felt something was missing and hoped a woman he had something with could fulfill that purpose). All of this makes me think he has some domain/relation to love as well as power seeing his influence of thousands being the head of Dethklok. His power is so insanely strong that whenever he doesn't deliver or even when he does via performances the area goes to shit and he strikes up chaos. A little part of me wonders if that's because all of the boys performing is like some Leviathan event but I digress. And in this role, it is Nathan who counters...

William

William arguably has the least info bout his background other than how his two parents died and how he was treated harshly in school, there's not jack about him. However, I do feel like he has domain over hate, pride, and chaos. I mean this man's hatred is so intense that it extends to every part of himself and is an essential part of Dethklok's sound. Without him, they are positive, which funny enough is pretty reflective of the role of bass in a band. It's the link between the drums and everything else. So no matter what the rest of the instruments are doing at that moment the bass sets a tone and is fundamentally dictated by him. He's a mean, vulgar, and brash force that in a weird way counters everyone a tad bit. (love lil bro for that tho).

Pickles

Quite literally being dubbed the mother of the group by fandom and cannon I think Pickles represents the maternal figure of the group kinda. But at the same time he neither counters nor has a specific role in the group that isn't being the drummer. (though drummers act like the temporal glue i.e. wrangling his stupid bandmates to the right path) He takes on this id personality yet also acts brash. The closest thing I could compare him to being a Dionysus figure. Specifically how he represents overindulgence which can be seen in his multitude of addictions but his insanely high tolerance, other than the relation to alcohol Dionysus also has 2 sides just like pickles. One minute he is the most stable and mature of the group and the next he is thrown into a jealous or petty rage. (which can be seen in fatherklok of with Abigail and Nathan)Most often being spurred on by his family history of being the scapegoat for all their problems. And if you subscribe to the pickles is trans propaganda (which I fully am fucking down for) then the weird parallels between Dionysus's split presentation between femininity and masculinity interacting with each other is interesting to see. Especially when he becomes a maternal figure for toki, Skwisgaar, and William- but a pseudo partner for Nathan who also kind of represents the patriarchal power in the home. Paired with Dionysus having domain over theatre and entertainment is interesting with his roots in glam metal being the frontman for Snakes and Barrels.

One of my fav Greek myths has gotta be Tiresias if y’all will let me ramble for a bit

iirc one version says that Tiresias (born a woman) asked Apollo for the gift of prophecy in return for sex, Apollo granted her the gift, Tiresias didn’t have sex with him, so Apollo proceeded to turn her into a dude, then at some point in the future for unspecified reasons (prolly cuz he was mad) Zeus turned Tiresias back into a woman, then at some point in the future later Hera for also unspecified reasons turned Tiresias back into a man, and also at some point Tiresias (prolly male at this time) saw Athena bathing and Athena’s response was to make him blind,

In another version Tiresias was born male, saw two snakes having sex, got so pissed off about it that he hit the girl snake with a stick, which pissed off Hera so bad that she turned him into a girl, which Tiresias then lived as for seven years (like she got married and gave birth and everything), then she saw the same snakes I think having sex again and either hit the guy with a stick or just left them alone and got turned back into a dude, at some point after Zeus and Hera were arguing about whether dudes or girls had a better time during sex so they asked Tiresias because he’d been both and Tiresias said the guy and Hera got so mad she blinded him and Zeus felt so bad he gave him the gift of prophecy

And then in both versions he drank contaminated water that fucking killed him (cuz Apollo)

i can't even begin to explain how much i loathe rick's depictions of femininity in the series, he will pay for his depictions of aphrodite and hera, two goddesses very feminine in what they represent. he did the entire concept of aphrodite's children so so poorly, he doesn't even try to show us their skillset and shows them sitting out of capture the flag to do their makeup or whatever?? and i like the idea of hera being obsessed with the 'perfect family' ideal she is trying to get the olympians to live up to but the way rick has portrayed it has fallen so short and it is obvious in general fandom reception of hera that it is inherently misogynistic (the amount of times i've seen people call pjo hera a bitch, keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!!). like hera is so misunderstood, she is one of the only gods to challenge zeus and take action especially since she's in a position to do so with less repercussion than others might receive (with the exception of the rebellion and whatnot), but no!! she is evil stepmother!! bitch who goes after zeus' lovers and children!!

and then you have slightly less feminine goddesses (though i'd argue they're still quite feminine in nature) artemis and athena, the former being a manhating stoic girlboss, how fucking creative rick go girl give us nothing. and what's the deal with artemis kicking out two sapphics from the hunt, like that is so icky to me in so many ways. then there's athena, who rick goes out of his way to show that she is a bad mother and person in general (using the roman myth of medusa on a greek goddess?? boooo, tomato, tomato). rick has the most annoying tendency to find one stereotypical trait about a greek god and just latch onto that for their characterisation and nothing else, you see it with some of the gods but it is so so prevalent in the goddesses. poseidon gets his good moments as a dad and viewed quite favourably in percy's eyes (on another note, the blatant bias in the greek gods and heroes books is laughable but that's another time), apollo gets a whole book series to have a redemption arc (good for him, though), hades gets some good moments too (though it's quite annoying to me seeing the fandom praise him as one of the 'good ones' lmao). zeus... i don't like rick's depiction of him for reasons entirely unrelated lol, but the point is that the gods are allowed to be multifaceted and complex, but the goddesses get their stupid stereotypical traits exacerbated and maybe one or two half-assed moments of something else. it pisses me off so much!!!

he does this all the time and it’s not just the olympian goddesses either. his recent depiction of nyx was so….. i can’t even adequately form my thoughts on the matter. the characterization of the goddesses in the pjoverse are not given much thought. even when i try to rationalize and analysis it, they still fall short. iris, medea, khione off the top of my head, all fun characters but each have something umm distasteful(?) in their depictions. definitely a part of all three series that deserves more examination
