Spike Shots from the wreck of the Tudor ship Mary Rose, before 1545

This cast iron ball had a wrought iron spike (pointed at both ends) that went through the centre, leaving a square hole.

A good description is "spike shot", but this term seems to be interchangeable with "crossbar shot" in contemporary or near-contemporary descriptions/inventories. The spikes did not survive in the mud, so the museum has replaced them with frosted acrylic.

They were primarily used for tearing sails, sometimes the ends of the spikes were wrapped with incendiary material to burn the sails.
