Leatherback sea turtle! The largest of all turtles and the biggest non-crocodilian reptile, at up to 8ft long and 1,100lbs. Their range extends all the way from Alaska and Norway to as far south as New Zealand and South Africa. Instead of the typical bony shell, it's skin is leathery and embedded with osteoderms - bony plates - which allow for more flexibility under the pressure of their deep dives for jellyfish and other soft-bodied prey.
Hi friend, I am visiting in Frederick, Maryland (roughly) and saved this fellow while he was crossing the road. Any idea about this polite gentleman? He had some red on the side of his head too but he was more tucked in at this point. 🐢 I picked him up carefully and put him off the road (in the direction he was headed (slowly) towards). Thank you much!

Hello yes this is a female Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina), family Emydidae.
This piece is part of a project that fell through, the "ABC of Dinosaurs", where I illustrated a selection of extinct animals, some famous, others less well known in fanciful depictions. I do not claim full realism, only giving my take on one of my greatest passions in life.
