My nonthreatening male feminist boyfriend asked if I’ve ever heard of ‘squeezer’ and before I could reply with ‘I hardly know her’ he showed me a video of our flesh hog rending water from stone to the tune of ‘Buddy Holly’

Why doesn’t he write about the Important Things he cares about?
PAUL McCARTNEY: [Strumming an imaginary guitar] E-co-lo-gy, ve-ge-tar-i-an-ism… It just doesn’t sound right in a song.
Whom does he listen to at home?
PAUL McCARTNEY: My wife.
His feelings about using popular tunes for commercials, like Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" for an oven cleaner?
PAUL McCARTNEY: I wouldn't mind if they did it with 'Yesterday.' I can see it selling garbage disposals.
— Give My Regards to Broadstreet Press Conference, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Chicago. Quote published in the Chicago Tribune, October 19th, 1984.

Steve gets control over the TV three hours a week. Friday night when he commondears the phoneline too so he can talk to his mom about Dallas as it’s happening. Tuesday, when their local network airs the new Star Trek. And Wednesday, when Quantum Leap is on.
He had to fight for Wednesday.
He had to admit that maybe he does have a thing for science fiction but he doesn’t actually think Robin cares that much about China Beach, just giving him a hard time.
It’s October, Robin is on the floor finishing up their costumes for a party she found on Saturday.
“Where’s he leaping to this week?”
“You’d know if you tuned in every week with me.”
“No, I’m with Eddie, it lost me when the leap was about Buddy Holly and not saving that lesbian.”
He ignores her. Because that isn’t what happened, mostly, and the episode is starting and because he doesn’t actually know the answer. Last week’s episode had ended with a leap back to somewhere Sam had already been.
And somewhere along the way Steve isn’t sure he’s even watching anymore. He can’t even hear Al and Sam’s banter over the sounds of his own thoughts.
Why wouldn’t Sam be excited? Who wouldn’t be excited to get to be a girl? It’s just sometimes, has Sam never thought it would be nice to be a girl just for a little while?
Then there’s the dress.
“I wish I could look like that.”
“What?”
Steve’s barely aware he’s spoken until he hears Robin trying to clarify.
This should be a bathroom conversation, but if he looks away he’s worried this will end. He can’t come back and have it be over. He can’t leave the bathroom and learn he imagined the whole thing.
So he looks a the chest hair poking out of a low cut floral dress and he says what he’s thinking.
“I want that, I think. I want the dress and the shoes. I want to look in the mirror and see a pretty blonde with a strong jaw. I don’t want it all the time, but I want it.”
“Okay.”
“Is it?”
She clambers up on the sofa. Her fingers cold where she grips tight to Steve’s arm. “I don’t think everyone’s going to get it, but I do. I get you, I’m with you. And you would look better in that dress than Scott Bakula.”
“I’ve got better legs than he does.” Steve says, cause that’s what they do. It’s something serious and then they break the tension knowing they’ve got the one person in the world who understands them sitting right beside them.
“And your hair is nicer.”
“I wouldn’t wear that ugly hat.”
“You wouldn’t need to, your hair would look better.”
“Robin, I think I want to be a girl today.”
“Sounds like it's time to leap, Stevie.”

Legible screenshot of the article Aziraphale is reading!
Transcript under cut:
Headline: Everyday It's a gettin' closer
A strange phenomenon has got the locals of The Resurrectionist pub in Edinburgh scratching their heads and tapping their feet. For no matter what song they put on the pub's jukebox, it will only play one tune: Buddy Holly's Everyday. Proprietor Mr Tulloch is at a loss to explain it.
"I took over The Resurrectionist over twenty years ago and the jukebox was installed by the previous landlord, and it has never given us a moment's trouble until recently. My regulars noticed that all the records seem to have been changed into this Buddy Holly song! I'm quite partial to a bit of Buddy Holly myself but everyone in the pub is getting a bit scunnered of it, to be honest with you."
Asked what he thinks could possibly be behind the phenomenon, Mr Tulloch is completely stumped. "Of course, I naturally assumed this was a prankster at work but I've taken to sitting up all night and watching over the [illegible] whenever I put new singles [illegible] honestly swear that no-one [illegible] 'Everyday.' I've had the engineer out umpteen times, but he says that it's never been tampered with and can't explain it either. It's cost me a fortune in visits.
News of the strange occurrence is beginning to spread and Mr Tulloch admits that people are starting to turn up at the pub to check it out for themselves. "I was worried at first that people [illegible] There is only so much of one song..."

So about Buddy Holly…
Guys my heart is gonna burst 😭, so I was watching the trailer and pausing it every two seconds to catch every detail (you know, having a normal one), when I got a bit fixated on the music.
I had the idea to sing along to the parts of the score that were recognizably the melody to “Everyday” in order. (So the tune would play the equivalent of the first verse, then some vocalizing would happen, then the tune again but this time it’d be the second verse, so in and so forth.)
And you won’t believe what verse is playing over that scene where Aziraphale flashes back to the candlelight dinner, it’s a real shocker /s:
“Everyday, it's a-gettin' faster
Everyone said, "Go up and ask her"
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey, hey”
…So uh… putting aside the fact that the implications are very adorable (encouraging Aziraphale to just have a nice time with Crowley and don’t overthink it), it also sure sounds familiar.
MARK MY WORDS, something Happened at that damn dinner. He worked up the courage to invite Crowley inside for what was an obvious date, then Crowley probably, you know, acted accordingly, and Aziraphale got overwhelmed. Like babe no offense but I feel like you went to fast for yourself, lmao.
So now let’s pay close attention to the actual part containing sung lyrics, with the only discernible lines being:
“everyday, it’s a gettin’ closer,
Going faster than a roller coaster,
Love like yours will surely come my way”
So interestingly “love like yours” plays specifically when the trailer reaches its climax, flashing image after image to tell us to expect some element of chaos and urgency in the events to come. This is maybe a reach but it’s gotten me even more convinced that the romance(s?) aren’t gonna simply be a very important B plot but directly effecting whatever strangeness/ danger is occurring in the main mystery.
…Look I’m really gunning for an “oops, we broke the universe with gay pining” angle, lol. First of all that would just be funny. Second of all, I think it would be utterly fascinating to explore any number of implications Aziraphale and Crowley’s whole thing has for the natural order of things. Or even the possibility that the “Great Plan” was about reconciliation instead of war, but perhaps more on that in a later post.

Any recommendations for catchy songs about specific American historical events? Hurricane by The Band of Heathens (unless I'm mistaken, it's pretty explicitlu about Katrina) and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald are examples.
i love the song hurricane, but i didn't know about the other til now. thank you for the inadvertent rec!
also i don't know about catchy necessarily but i do have a few historical event tunes to recommend.
It's About Blood by Steve Earle is about West Virginia coal mining disasters, at the end of which he lists by name around two dozen victims of specific disasters. this one gives me chills. this whole album Ghosts of West Virginia does actually
Big Time in the Jungle by Old Crow Medicine Show is about snatching up poor, uneducated southern boys and shippin em off to Vietnam. pretty catchy, v fuckin dark by the end
Battle of Blair Mountain by David Rovics is about,, well,, the battle of blair mountain
Seneca Creek by Charles Wesley Godwin mentions the WV flood of 1985 though is about the singer's grandparents iirc
... and as i made this list i realized i sure talk a lot about and revere west virginia for someone whos never lived there (but plans to <3). anyway here's some stuff to balance it
Casey Jones by The Grateful Dead is about a conductor in Tennessee who stayed on a runaway train to let others escape to safety and ultimaetly died (and is catchy as fuck actually)
Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton is pretty straightforwardly about the war of 1812
Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is about the Kent State Massacre
American Pie by Don McClean was written in response to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson Jr. i feel like everyone knows this song but maybe not the actual meaning, i didn't know til a few years ago. so maybe i'm just behind
anyway if yall know any please add in reblogs or leave in the replies, i love this kinda thing

hello! first of all, thank you for being such a wonder in this community, I wouldn't know half of the GO news if it weren't for you :)
secondly, I transcribed the newspaper that Aziraphale is reading in the trailer, if that's of interest to you? (the question marks are where words are covered or cut off by the screen)

Hiya! :) Thank you, yeah :)! Also had it in my todo list but there is so much wonderful things today! :)
