He could give him the full first name as Billy was nice enough to give his. William is a common name, and so is Giovanni-- it's not like he'll get doxxed for giving such a common name. Not to mention 'Gio' can be short for assorted other Italian boy names, like Gioacchino, Giorgio or Giorgino, Giordano, Giosue-

Eh. It's not the first name he should worry about. It's the last. Hopefully should the time comes if they exchange full names, this 'Billy' isn't history savvy.
