Shelter

I'm at a point in my life where I don't feel like I can be loved.

As if my position in everyone's lives is just temporary.

I always seem to fill a transitional place in people's journeys and anyone that comes into mine is only there to take shelter from a storm.

Once it's over they still have somewhere to be or something to do and I'm to clean the fallen branches and broken windows alone again.

Once I've gotten myself back in order another person comes down the walk with another storm on their heels.

Like a fool, I open the door wide for them and put on the kettle.

Hoping that just one will stay.

That one will help me put myself back together once the storm is over.

That someone would find me more important than whatever is down the road.

I want to be more than shelter.

I want to be a destination.

I want to be loved.

by the way i know we're all still young and it seems like we may not get to old age and be happy, but my great-aunt divorced her husband years ago and she's had a girlfriend/unofficiated wife this whole time. on facebook her profile picture is of them holding hands and everybody knows them as "[name] and [wife's name]," to the point where there isn't one without the other, and EVERYONE in our family accepts them. they're in their 70s but they're full of joy and glee (there's no other word for it) and they have a strong community. there is hope and we can be them too
