Newsies but itâs French (Canadian) pt.2
(aka me just getting increasingly frustrated the longer it goes on until Iâve completely lost whatever bits of sanity I had left lol)
~ king of new york scene ~
âWeâre in the papes??â âYouâre in the papes.â why do I find this so funny help-
âFor the good of Jack, we can stop complaining...â not the whole thing but that sounds so out of character for Race I canât-
After a quick google search, I can confirm that Race says âThe world is at our boots.â
The newsies are very confused
Apparently he was meant to say feet.
âIâm talking about our feet!â
âŠ
hOW IN THE WORLD IS THAT EVEN CLOSE TO âTHE WOILD IS YA ERSTERâ-
Okay Iâm done
âMy own face on a piece of wood!â good for you ig
âIâm respectful. Iâm looking at you.â please-
âI am pretty, am I not?â yes race youâre very pretty
âMy own bed and an indoor toilet!â wait⊠does that mean you literally have a toilet outside?? In the open???
âNothing more normal for a famous journalist!â Irdk how Iâm supposed to process this-
âLeave, idiot! Itâs her, the king of New York!â guys is this actually what he says in English?? Race why are you so m e a n
âSomeâŠâ *checks notes* âdepressive defeatistsâ ?? I just want to know how you got that from âBuncha wet noodlesâ-
âWe were on the verge of drowning ourselves in alcohol.â WHY AM I ONLY NOW FIGURING OUT WHAT SOME OF THESE LINES MEAN AS IâM WATCHING IT IN F R E N C H ???
They cut out a lot of the background comments during the dance break and now Iâm sad
After Katherineâs little dance: âItâs a joke, I hope.â wow
âYouâll see what the Delanceyâs do in their pants!â that sounds so wrong I-
âFriends can leave, let them be!â I donât think thatâs what they were trying to say but okay
~ letter from the refuge scene ~
âThereâs guards here, theyâre mean.â WOW JUST TEAR MY HEART OUT WHY DONTCHA-
âIf they tell us to jump, we obey, if not weâre screwed.â ow
âThe rooftop misses me.â I give up.
âItâll go. Iâm in shape.â
âEnd.â the only time they decide not the put âtheâ unnecessarily in front of something-
âGood, thatâs enough.â how rude
yeah thatâs all for that song. I hope you guys werenât actually expecting me to find much humour in that one
~ watch what happens reprise scene ~
âYou are a love.â ??
Guys where I live if you say âtant mieux pour vous.â it means âToo bad for youâ and thatâs literally what Jack just told Davey-
âStop. I understand. Itâs useless.â eh close enough
âGood blood, where do you have to go to avoid you guys?â
âItâs impossible. We are inevitable.â since when did Davey actually become Thanos?
âAnd this here girl, Sally, sheâs great.â :(
âWe say that you wrote a good article.â âYou seem horrible.â theyâre much more salty in this version-
âYes, itâs true. And, he is dead.â uhh guess whoâs not going to Santa Fe-
âWe can forget that and go back to work?â the person who wrote this had a real passion for butchering Lesâ lines lol
âBe positive. No one is dead.â mmmmmmmmmmm-
âIs that what youâre hoping for??â MMMMMMMMMMMMMM-
âThereâs no question of cents, Jack!â yk what? sure. i donât even care at this point-
âWeâll do what?â he sounds like he doesnât even want to win.
âWeâre already winning.â âAgreed.â ABORT ABORT THIS ISNâT WHAT YOUâRE SUPPOSED TO S A Y JACK-
âAnd âvoilaâ why I think that Joe is an idiot. Itâs a rattlesnake.â â... Yes.â you heard it right here, guys. if itâs a rattlesnek, itâs an idiot
âAnd you know why a snake whistles?â WHAT
âHe is scared.â
âGo see, the poor of the head thatâs spinning.â This is shredding whatever bits of sanity I had left-
âWhy send the brutes?â idk why Davey
âYou have maybe reason!â âThank you!â
âAnd I have an appointment!â
no but when you say you have a ârendez-vousâ here where I live, it means you have like a doctors appointment or something lol
~ the bottom line reprise scene ~
âAfter his release, I surprised him myself!â
âIf thatâs the case, weâre going to bring him in... in softness.â nice of them
â... or the little thief?â Iâm really starting to think that they lack like 99% of words in the French language-
âI was fighting in a war.â âAnd that turned out well for you?â get wrecked joe
âRally as much as you want, no journal in town will talk about it.â guys I donât have enough serotonin for this-
âEveryone here knows youâre horrible!â they made Jack sound like a little kid in the translation, and honestly Iâm not even disappointed lol
âWeâre missing time, little.â I donât even know what to say-
âYour abject surrender was always the bottom of the problem.â sure why not
âGentlemen, escort our guest to the cave-â well isnât he nice?
âBe happy youâre alive, little. Thatâs the essential.â
âYeah, so go!â ?? how is that even remotely close to âYeah, so behave!â ??????
âI exercised my favourite American punch!â uhhhh good for you?
âYou can sleep here, on this old press! Itâs very firm.â help Iâve fallen and I canât get up-
~ brooklynâs here scene ~
âThe sellers need our help! The sellers need our help! Tell them that Brooklynâs arriving! Tell them that Brooklynâs arriving!â
âWeâre from Brooklyn, weâre the sellers from Brooklyn!â UHHHHH EXCUSE ME???
âWe just learned that our friends are going wrong!â please you heard they were âgoing wrongâ like five days ago-
âYou know weâre there for you, since always.â oH rEaLlY???
âBrooklyn is there!â
âStrikes arenât nice, but theyâre passionate!â well Iâm glad you think so
âLetâs shout it, Brooklyn is there!â
âAaaaand sooooooo!!â âSooooooooo!!â âSoooooooooo!!!â âWe will send you half road, just to Queens!â
âThe pigeons are going to get soaked!â aaaaaand weâre back to the pigeons-
âWhat sad way to finish your career!â they sound so sarcastic I canât-
âTheyâre not serious, but if they think weâre laughingâŠâ i feel low-key threatened-
âLetâs shout it!â well if you try hard enough, you can make it sound like âloud and clear!â?
âManhattan is theeere, Flushing is theeere, âRichmond is theeere, Woodside is theeere, and the Bronx too!!â
âSorry, little. No news of him.â I just⊠why does it translate to âlittleâ?
âYou are alone, we could say.â âNo.â âYes.â
Medda really isnât taking no for an answer-
âThe sellers of journals of New York!â Iâm crying why is it such a mouthful-
âYou want to be treated like an adult? Act like an adult!â
~ something to believe in scene ~
âItâs Specs!â wow kath throw specs under the bus like that-
âAnd if I was a boy youâd be looking at me with a butter black eye!â Iâve officially given up on the French language Iâm sorry-
âYou win a fight when the other guy bites the dust.â and another one gone and another one gone-
âIf thereâs a way I could grab hold of something,â has literally been shortened to âif I could.â IF I COULD-
âIf I could stop time.â Iâm so mad
âReally?â âReally.â ahhHHHHHHHHHHH
âBut itâs going. Itâs going.â
â... who didnât even know she gave me a hope.â WHAT EVEN IS THE POINT IF THE TITLE ANYMORE??
âBut itâs going. Itâs going.â The thrilling sequel
âNo. Iâm scared of you.â âNo!â yeesh-
âI believe in something.â good for you
~ once and for all scene -
âHe is with us.â but like⊠how much?? only 99 percent????
âWe could hold a hoedown here.â I feel like the person translating this just gave up by the end of the show-
âHappy to have found you again.â what did you like lose him or something
âThe close.â ok yes thatâs funny, but it gets even funnier when you realize it could also be translated to âthe farm.â
âA little grease, and sheâll be like new.â
âThis is for the guys who kill themselves at the factories.â w h a t
âTHE BANNER OF SELLERS OF JOURNALSâ Iâm still not over this
~ everything that comes after that ~
âAnyone who doesnât act in their own self interest is an idiot!â ey watch it-
also what the heck is âquiconqueâ I swear Iâve never seen that word in my life
âWe will find a way, but letâs seize the moment.â first it was âthe chanceâ and now itâs âthe momentâ google translate are u okay-
They really went and changed âbullyâ to âmonsterâ didnât they
âYou can make it.â he really makes it sound like Jack is about to die or something-
âItâs disgusting!â youâre disgusting sir
âAnd the world will know, weâve been taking notes.â
âItâs a joke!â nope lol
âGoodbye, fool!â IâM LAUGHING WAY TOO HARD ABOUT THIS-
âWell you already work for my father.â âYes.â
âSuper, Jack Kelly!â I CANâT-
âSo, Jack, youâre staying?â yeah sure close enough-
âSellers of journals on a mission!â
Das it âmy friendsâ lol. Hope you enjoyed.
#newsies#guys this took forever-#okay donât get me wrong I love the French language but itâs just so much fun to make fun of#I go to a French school where youâre not allowed to speak English unless itâs English class so maybe Iâm just bitter#anyway#tw: caps#justiceforspecs

That Time of the Year Again (tm): Get ready for MCF 21: the Harbinger commentary!
Itâs that time of the year yet again! Mystery Case Files 21: The Harbinger commentary. If anyone has been waiting for the hilarity that is my commentaries, Iâm sorry Iâm late this year. I actually started working as a freelance writer, and projects are coming in hot. Plus a recent family matter (not COVID-related. Iâm thankfully in one of the safest places from it.) meant I had to put this on a back-burner. And then I guess I left it there for too long and triggered the smoke alarm, and people entered my inbox going âAre you okay???â So without further ado, letâs get this started. *cracks fingers* I have DUAL MONITORS NOW which means I can see my commentary AND watch the playthrough at the same time. (Yet, I still DONâT have a credit card. This is the new running joke.) Iâm going to be watching YouGibâs playthough. Pazu also has his playthrough up. Spoilers below the cut as usual!
First, Grandma? A new studio? (A quick google shows they have done quite a bit of HOP titles and series.) Welcome to the MCF family! I hope youâre ready for the roasting thatâs ahead. 8D MD: You mean the roasting theyâll let me do, right? I donât know if they would be so nice as to grant you such catharsis right away. MD: Damn⊠Itâs Grandma though. Thereâll at least be cookies, right?
I like how âTheâ is in a place where you can almost read it as âThe Mystery Case Filesâ, which MCF honestly deserves at this point. 21 years! Thatâs old enough to drink in the US!
(MD: Hm, old fashion building and clothes? Are we having some anachronistic adventure again--) CAT. Black cat. This is Isis. (MD: Not all black cats are IsisâŠ) Yes they are. They are to me--
*Crystal ball* SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT.
Captions: (Otherworldly scream) Why yes, yes game, thank you for describing my exact reaction to seeing that darn crystal ball. I love this self-awareness and I hope it stays.
Oh nooooo, green beam of light⊠(Green was the color of souls used in old Ravenhearst games, and also the type of light that the Archivist from Moths to a Flame evaporated into, iirc.)
MD: Hm, a harbinger usually means something worse is coming up. So whoâs harbinger to whom I wonder? Well you could say Emma, Madame Fate, or Victor was the harbinger to Charles, and then Charles himself was a harbinger to Alistair, who apparently was harbinger to the twins, who were also harbinger to Alistair again-- MD: Yes, I know, thank you, please stop. --and then he was harbinger to a Lord Ravenhearst who we never saw again, and then we picked it up again somehow to Phineas Crown though that was much earlier and the pirate was a harbinger of himself in a sense. In fact, I guess in a metasense, you could say each MCF game is a harbinger of the next-- MD: You havenât even gotten past the opening so PLEASE STOP.
Hm, game difficulty settings-- no Master Detective level. Ten marks off. :( MD: Okay thatâs unfair. Also Hardcore is one word. MD: Hey, Iâm the pyromaniac, okay? Chill! (Me at recording: pick helpful messages, pick it! PICK IT!)
OH, a CHOICE?! Oh, wait, itâs just the main game and extra content.
THEY GAVE YOU YOUR BUGGY BACK. THEY GAVE IT BAAAAACK. AAAAAHHH. MD: Interiorâs a little different, but yes, I HAVE MY CAR BACK AND NOTHING CAN STOP ME NOW. MWAHAHAHA-- Queen: Something strange is happening in Darkmoor. MD: *Does a 180 and goes back home* [The end.] Just kidding. :P I love how all the names of the places weâre going to immediately screams DANGER. MD: If I turned back every time I heard a name like that, I would be a very different person today. Probably saner, less salty, and generally happier.
It took me a while to see clearly, but the bobblehead looks like default MD (the costume seems to be inspired by the Fate Carnival collectibles)! We can now safely assume that MD is either really afraid of the cold, or very, very desperately trying to hide their identity. MD: Donât tell anyone⊠but the getup is like a security blanket. ...One that you wear?! MD: Shhhhhh not so loudâŠâŠ.
Queen: Several keywords related to your previous cases-- What keywords? What are they? MD: Ravenhearst? Souls? Pirates? Skulls? Crystal Ball? Madame Fate? Dire Grove? Death herself? Queen: Iâm not revealing this mystery⊠itâll give the whole plot away! ...Okay, Iâm putting ten on Victor, twenty on Charlotte, thirty on Alistar, and a hundred on Charles-- MD: You CHEATER you were spoiled while GOOGLING. --actually, I should do a bingo board instead. Yeah, Iâm gonna do that. (And then she spends ten minutes wasting time on that, before giving up. We are at⊠2 minutes in of the playthrough. This is normal.)
Queen: Weâve detected a possible energy anomaly-- MD: Iâm sorry, we have DONE WHAT?! You guys have technology for that??? MD: Where was this technology for likeâŠ. The past ten cases? I really could have used some of that before heading in! (Somewhere in the world, the Mystery Tracker detective hides his gadgetsâŠ) (Post video edit: Speaking off, he seems to have gone UFO now.)
*Radio fizzes out* MD: Thatâs not good. Um⊠UP AHEAD. MD: THATâS REALLY NOT GOOD. DETECTIVE TAKE THE WHEEL!!!! MD: THIS BUGGY IS STILL ON MORTGAGE NO. (And the MD, the bobblehead, literally lost their head, lol.)
Gibs is definitely feeling the stylistic difference. I personally donât think it detracts from the game right now, and if anything, it can open new avenues for MCF to explore. Also, awwww itâs not our old buggy, but hey, I like the red!
MD: Okay⊠agency device. Better use this to scan for creepy crawly energies. Iâm so sad itâs not something you can get attached to⊠MD: Iâm pretty damn attached to my new car, thank you very much. Well, the windshield is already broken, so I think itâs been marked as âreadily expendableâ emotionally. :P (Machine sort of reminds me of the old machine from Huntsville, actually⊠which did appear again in⊠Rewind?)
Wow, that royal decree is like⊠a permission slip from mom. XD MD: Enough to get peopleâs attention, but not enough for them to treat me seriously. You would think with lives at stake, they would send something more official? MD: If they did, I might just be out of a job, because half of my job seems to involve waiting for people to get in trouble. Also, marking this officer Davis down as âguy who might get into trouble later and need rescuingâ.
...Okay, you know what the device could have been? A portable TV head. MD: I will PUNT that metal box so hard if they handed me one! Missed moment of creepy, honestly.
âThe agency never ceases to amaze meâ??? MD: I meant that in both the âwow, I canât believe this is what you used our money on!â and the âwow, I canât believe this is where you used our money instead of that other really important thing we could have hadâ sense. Never cease to amaze you in how disappointed you are at them, then. MD: After our last security breach, yes.
Solved Case Files, omg. And you carry it on your car.XD MD: The therapist said I needed to âexpress my outrageâ more healthily than arson. And you made the WORLD NEWS???? Whatever happened to being the most secretive person in the world?! MD: Shhhhh let them keep guessing⊠(Also, Bobblehead isnât our MD, it seems. A case of mistaken identity. AwwwâŠ.)
Guy in purple: I didnât do anything wrong! Hm, this guy is sus⊠also, weâre in the UK, confirmed? MD: ...As if the name didn'tâ give it already. Also, SIR, SIR, YOU DROPPED YOUR purseâŠâŠ. Well I guess itâs my purse now.
Tarot cards as collectibles! More Madame Fate coming up?
Wow, that police station entrance was a time machine. Weâre back in modern-day old town England! MD: âŠ.pattern on floor, sus⊠Aaaaand power outage. Cue bars. Policeman trapped. Oops. MD: Number of people that needed rescuing is now one, and is exactly as I predicted.
Police: Um, can you come closer? I dunno man, you behind bars, pretty sus. Maybe youâre not a real police. Police: Oh please. We talking real? How about your prove youâre the real Master Detective-- MD: *Hands Queenâs note* Police: Right thatâll work. (We didnât get to flash our badge?!)
Wait, youâre in a ROYAL AGENCY??? Did you.... change agencies or something??? MD: After the last game, can you really blame me if a headhunter came asking? Me: No but⊠you work for the CROWN???? MD: Hey, if me collecting stories for Grandma Queen wasnât obvious enough, I donât know what else to say.
Wow, an ACTUAL FLASH DRIVE. Weâre actually in modern day society. XD Albeit one with really industrial looking computers. (Now I need to go and check if the old games used floppy disksâŠ)
Witness 1: Itâs not like she has a crystal ball! Suspect purple: Yeah, Iâm a fair owner. Girl Aisling is a fortune reader. ...Madame Fate, Madame FATE, MADAME FATE. MD: Okay, maybe that cat WAS Isis after all. Guy: She likes watching ravens. MD and I, simultaneously: FUCK.
I have to say, the puzzles are quite refreshingly different from ones that have appeared in the past. Me likey.
Gibs sees victim photo on autopsy table: What a handsome devil he is! Me: *Dies laughing and fails to make comments for a while*
Oh wow, you can write coherently again! Actual journals! Clear sketches! (Actual cutscene replay???? TWENTY POINTS.) MD: Therapy can be a wonderful thing sometimes. ...Please tell me youâre talking actual therapy and not âI got to explode a ship and the pirates on itâ therapy. MD: Well, that counts as therapy still, right?
Okay Madame Fate, if you have a daughter, or this is your granddaughter, please just descend from heaven and let us know right now. (...wait, didnât Madame Fate have a son? The really big eater guy? Franco!) That said, it says the veil of time, which might be an allusion to the Dark Veil too.
Omg a FAX MACHINE.
Davis: Right, good luck heading into town to the victimâs home! MD: Yep! Thanks for being a rare competent soul in this universe! Really appreciate the help-- [Rose street.] MD: ...Is it too late to turn back? Yes, yes it is entirely too late. 8D Letâs gooooooooo! MD: *sighs*.
SHADOW IN JAMESâ HOUSE! SHADOW! MD: Probably Nigel. He was sneaking around already.
MENTION Of CAT. CAT. MD: ...are you broken? ...Yes. (Itâs nearing 1 am. So Kitty commentary might be retroactive below.)
Huh, HOP has sections that unlock objects like in Dark Parables. Neat!
Well, well, well, what do we have here? Small town drama as usual. MD: The predictable disappointment of human nature. Why canât I just have cases that deal with that? No supernatural stuff, just little town murder mysteries. Little Town Mystery Case Files, coming to a store near you soon! (Iâll be honest, Grandma, I would play that once, just to have MD be completely paranoid over nothing actually supernatural.)
Santa Claus Beard Guy: I hope I didnât scare you. MD: Iâve had undead grip me through the window. A little shadow doesnât spook me. A family whose last name begins with a D though rattles them. MD: Please donât give away my weaknesses so quickly...
Santa Guy: So the cat kicked my ass. Can you get me some medicine? MD: Sure thing. BTW, where is this cat, and how can I recruit it to kick the asses of my enemies?
Eeeeehhhh complex door puzzles are back! Except they are now complex cupboard puzzles.
WOOOOOOOOOW thatâs a LYNX if I ever saw one! MD: Hey, remember how I say Iâm not good with animals? Too bad, grab the pet carrier, youâll need it. MD: ...please donât scratch me. Cat: *Roars* MD: *flips shit, runs and hides*
James has visited the Museum of Mysteries⊠And whatâs with the MCF crest in his diary??? MD: Wait⊠Allison? ALLISON THE REPORTER??? Omg, James is her BROTHER. THEY HAVE THE SAME LAST TIME EVEN OMG. MD: âŠâŠâŠ.. Iâm NOT going to be the deliverer of this bad news. Hey MD, does that curse that surrounds people associated with you extend to their families? MD: Thank you for going where my brain didnât want to, now kindly proceed no further. Just morbidly wonderingâŠ...
MD: They⊠they visited all the places that my cases took place. EVEN A HOUSE I REPORTED BURNED DOWN AND EXPLODED. AND THEN CAMPED OUT IN DIRE GROVE. MY GODS ALMIGHTY YOU TWO!!!! ...These siblings donât have a lot of self-preservation sense, huh? MD: There are some things that should NOT run in the family. This is one of them. (Iâll be honest. Just⊠HOW can the MD process this kind of guilt??? Kudos to you, Grandma Studios. This is possibly the most evil story choice ever, and you went there. Slow, claps. Seriously. That said there is a small plothole here with James saying he was there when MD rescued Allison. I think that might be a translation/grammar error though.)
Journal: Oh btw John worked on the Ravenhearst manor restoration. MD: *grabs John* WHY. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME AND TO THE WORLD?! John: UmâŠ.. it was work? MD: SOME PLACES ARE BETTER OFF GONE. Hey, look on the bright side. You can burn it down again as therapy! John: Oh btw, I made the elaborate locks-- MD: *Begins to strangle John* NO HOMICIDES MASTER DETECTIVE! You investigate them, not commit them! MD: TELL ME THAT AFTER IâM DONE.
MD: Okay, John. Let me be clear on one thing. You are now number one sus on my list of âThe person thatâs gonna betray me in the endâ right now, and probably staying there. If you turn out to be one of the Dalimars or their crony in disguise, I will END YOU. Are we clear? John: âŠâŠâŠâŠ MD: What? John: Youâre more terrifying than Jamesâ cat--
*Another prevention of homicide laterâŠ* MD: Alright, fine. Containers, opened. Toy, fixed. âCatâ, got. Now take it and get out. John: Thanks, here is the final piece to that closet door that I totally have been keeping from you this whole time. âŠ.Seriously???? MD: âŠ.Like I said, top of my shitlist. *Reads the closet puzzle poem* On second thought GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE I HAVE QUESTIONS!
James is the greatest dork. He locked his special diary entries with a lock. Iâm so sad we didnât get to meet him in person. Though that said... MD: My gods, some common sense is really missing from this familyâs mind. Seeds from the carnival?! A cube from probably dire grove??? How does it feel knowing you contributed indirectly to his demise? 8D MD: ...Itâs like seeing someone win the Darwin award and feeling bad that you are the one handing the trophy to them.
Davis: Oh hey, a cassette? Let me go and get the camera for it. Weâll meet later! MD: Wait a second, youâre gonna end up dead if you do that! Davis: No, Iâm gonna be fine! Hereâs a ticket to the night market! Have fun! MD: âŠâŠ ...More Darwin award nominations? MD: No. AwwwâŠ.
Marge: Oh hi detective! Thank you for saving me and my daughter so many years ago! MD: âŠ. Who are you again? *Goes to google* Oh, sheâs that woman from Reverantâs HuntâŠ. MD: Ah, the gossip hen. My gods whatâs with this town and its inhabitants⊠Itâs like all the people connected to you which fate has yet to kill are all showing up again for a chance of going to the afterlife! 8Db MD: That would be the worst lottery ever. All in the life of being Master Detectiveâs friend! Forecast for percent of death: high! MD: *curls up in a corner to be depressed*
Nigel: What do you want? MD: Here are your seeds. Nigel: Okay Iâm gone! MD: Right, now Aisling-- WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING. Crow: Caw-caw! MD: You, youâre not Crowlister, but if you are responsible, I will make you one very bald bird.
Okay, soooooo what do we do? MD: Removed what the device can. Guess weâre down to brewing this⊠tea... ...I think you need this tea more than her, honestly.
âI expect these MCF references now.â XD I think the 4th wall has just been shattered into oblivion.
Aisling: I see death all around you Master Detective! MD: Thank you for stating the obvious that has been made abundantly clear by the past hour and a half of plot. Davis: Hey waddap? MD: âŠ.*breaks down sobbing* YOUâRE STILL ALIVE THANK GOODNESS! *hugs Davis* Davis: Um⊠whatâs going⊠anyway, you should look at the video.
MD: Nigel! This video here suggests something. Want to talk before I make you? Nigel: This proves nothing! Now go away, I have preparations to-- Noooooooooo! *Nigel is swallowed by the earth* âŠâŠ...MD? MD: NOT IT. WASNâT ME. DEFINITELY NOT ME! You saw that right, Davis? Davis: Oh no, heâs dead! Guess weâll need to exhume him. MD: Now hold on, that reaction is just WAAAAAY TO BLAND.
(Watched a little bit ahead. I have some theories on who Aisling might be, since Gibâs thumbnail does appear to hint at it. Weâll see where it goes!)
(Aaaaand I was right!)
[Here ends entry one. Part two is going to be even more retroactive...]

Yugioh S2 Ep 31: You Canât Spell Marriage Without Mai
First off, when I got to this episode, I turned to my bro and said âWHATâ and he said âRight? This episode is the best. Itâs all down from hereâ and I was like âYOU SAID THAT TWO EPISODES AGOâ so now I know Bro can never be trusted.
If you had told me the plot of this episode before I watched it, Iâd say âno, that is Mario Party Fanfiction, and youâve changed all the names.â That is where this episode went.
Does Mario Party Fanfic exist? Quick Google search, one moment. Dear Lord. OK, Iâm back.
Now guys I want you to know that every time a ship comes up in Yugioh, I write like...10k words about it, math equations appearing around my head, as I try to figure out what the freakin hell anyone is even doing and if the writers even know what theyâre doing, and Iâll just promptly delete it. I just want you to know the service I do for you. Every time it comes up I start ranting about what the hell an ancient Egyptian would even understand about modern romance and then I stop myself and go âNo! Focus!â and Iâll Ctrl-A and Iâll just *delete* and feel a burden lift off my shoulders and into the ceiling like a prayer.
And then this episode happened?
And Iâm just like...
...
well I TRIED to spare you.
Please admire how many people they stuffed into Maiâs very small convertible. I half expected them to drive up to Kikiâs Delivery Service.
In case youâve also forgotten something that happened 40 episodes ago, Mai saved Joey last season by giving him a McGuffin as well as a gross ass handkerchief (which he doesnât have anymore, the whole 'will they ever return the gross ass handkerchiefâ plotline seems to have left the building) and finally, here, halfway through S2 weâre going to actually address why Mai would have any compassion for this bundle of awful kids.
I mean, Joey is still in high school and Mai is like 24 (although some say 44???) so Iâm pretty sure they were trying to make it seem platonic or motherly between these two but eh, I donât even know with this show, man. I mean she and Joey are 8 years apart but Serenity is 4 years Tristanâs junior despite Mokuba being 1 year younger than her and like right there. (Mokubaâs like 12 by the way, something surprising I found out when I did a Google Deep Dive on everyoneâs canonical weight a few episodes ago.) And then Pharaoh is like either 5000 or 16-ish depending on whoâs asking, so age doesnât seem to be ever an inhibiting factor in this show.
But as is Yugioh tradition, any space that could possibly be filled with any growth between a boy and a girl--even platonically--must be absolutely derailed by something exploding.
(read more under the cut)
Stepping out from inside of this limousine is a man who wears sunglasses at night, and so at first I thought âoh hell itâs Pegasusâ security, heâs backâ But heâs...heâs not. I really, really wish it were.
Joey literally wiped his hand off on the ass of his jeans before trying to shake the hand of this guy he has never mentioned before in his life but swears is his favorite person in the world.
Jean wisely left him hanging.
Joey is SO ready to see a ship in this show actually do something. So ready, that he is willing to accept Mai and this rando weâve never seen before as canon, despite the fact Iâm pretty sure a chunk of last season was trying (rather unsuccessfully) to pair him up with Mai?
Itâs not where I expected this episode to go! I really thought we were going to go and play a tourney? We were meeting up with Kaiba at a stadium one block away - heâs just sitting there on his big ass dragon shaped chair and like âomg the moment I walk away they get completely distracted, every single time.â
Anyways, lets get to a flashback where very fancy people in pastel suits were playing cards because apparently cards isnât just for streetfighting.
I have been wading through 1.5 seasons of these characters doing these elaborate dances around each other to never ever speak a word of commitment or relationship, and Iâve been pretty OK with them doing that. Honestly, the less romance in my Yugioh, the more satisfied I am, but then, after 1.5 seasons of basically nothing but Serenity wearing some bandages and needing a lift from the hospital, suddenly we have this random guy show up and profess marriage, and it is the most whiplash this show has ever given me.
I will accept demonic weird ass devices threatening children, spooky magic, bad history, and all sorts of weird ass outfits but like marraige???? wtf?????
Which is something that Mai seems to know because she turned him right down as you should when a person youâve never met before decides to marry you based on your ability to coordinate cards in a deck.
Joey honestly thinks being a rich star will automatically make you marriageable material, because I guess Joey completely forgot about Seto Kaiba, a very famous billionaire who is maybe one of the least marriageable people on the planet.
So what gets me about this episode and what makes it so freakin weird is that everyone here accepts this as the rules from this point on.
She MUST be married if Mai enters and then loses this game. Welcome to the Yugioh universe. This is how card people dating works. This is law, she has to accept this proposal if this card game based on chance loses.
Anyways, Yugiâs here to be the voice of reason in a dating episode and thatâs something I didnât expect to write in a sentence.
Yes, his motive was âMai, this will take too longâ not âMai, you donât know this guy, and heâs probably crazyâ it was âMai please, I know the world will end when I enter this tourney and so you have nothing to lose and itâs the best time to marry a stranger actually, but can you not? Itâs taking SO LONG.â
Duke Devlin in the back still trying helplessly to keep up with what the hell is going on since he wandered on this team by complete accident four episodes ago.
And yes, itâs THIS that makes Joey not like this guy. Not the part where he proposed out of the blue, nearly ran over them with his car, stalked Mai for like a year, and then completely disregarded Maiâs common sense. No--this part, where he threatened to kick Mai out of the competition. That was the low blow to Joey.
You will lose this duel and gain a husband.
That is an actual line from the show, folks, this show went places.
aaaaand Mai starts losing right away.
DAMN
IT.
This is the one thing I thought was pretty much in the bag. That there would not be the concept of one of these characters getting married. That was the One thing I was sure of. But I was not only wrong, but this is like the most bizarre wedding Iâve ever seen on TV. Itâs basically a shotgun wedding but with cards???
And what makes this more bizarre, and it was something I only noticed after watching this episode, is that weâve seen this type of behavior before. But at the time, back in the beginning of this season I was just like âthat was just a really weird thing that happened that wouldnât possibly be accepted as normalized in this universe.â
Like, remember that creepy DDR guy who dueled Yugi so that if he beat Yugi in a match, that creepy guy would become Teaâs boyfriend despite never spending more than 2 minutes with either of them? That despite the fact that Yugi isnât even her boyfriend, it was like something all three of them were like âI guess I have to go through with this now.â At the time I just assumed that was an insane thing that happened. I just assumed that would never come back.
This was the episode where suddenly I realized, maybe the big issue with these kids dating is a hell of a lot more than just actually going on dates. Maybe itâs because I didnât understand what their love language is. Itâs not Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation, and for sure as hell isnât Physical Touch, itâs the 6th, not very often talked about love language, thatâs right, itâs Cards. Rewrite everything, Gary Chapman. Tear it all down and reshoot all those Ted Talks, we forgot something.
Like, sometimes I forget that these guys live in a universe controlled by cards. I mean weâve seen cards and romance intermingle twice. (three times, if you count Rebecca, who might be engaged to Yugi now? It was kind of a really weird ending to a card game) Pegasus even tried to resurrect his dead wife through cards. All these cards currently exist because of Pegasusâ undying love for Cecilia (who is...OMG I forgot that chick might be alive somewhere)
What Iâm saying is that...What if this is how theyâve actually dated this whole time? What if this whole time that I assumed no one was dating they......they actually...were? What if I just didnât notice, because it was just so freakin weird? What if this is more like how in a Jane Austen novel, if someone goes on a walk with someone else itâs basically like 3rd base?
Like, remember Jane Austenâs Persuasion, where Captain Wentworth went on a walk with Louisa and she was like âhey catch me, Iâm 14 years old!â and then she tripped off a wall and got a concussion and he was like âDAMN IT! Now I have to marry her!â and everyone was like âWell congrats on getting married, Louisa.â and then she fell in love with a sad poet who gave her soup once while Captain Wentworth was getting his nuptials planned out in Bath and so Louisa dumped Captain Wentworthâs sorry ass and he was like âOH THANK YOU. YOU ARE SO 14.â And then sad soup man showed up in Bath while Wentworth and the rest of Louisaâs family was quickly crossing out âWentworthâ on all the marriage invitations and sad soup man was like âBefore Louisa, I was in love with this other chick, but she died, so Iâm pretty stoked I found Louisa.â and Captain Wentworth was like âYouâre such an asshole for cheating on your dead girlfriend, I would never do that, you ass!â and then immediately married Anne Wentworth by writing her one single letter saying âhey, want to get married Y/N?â despite the fact that he went well out of his way to avoid her the entire book?
What if thatâs been going on in the background of Yugioh but I just didnât know because, unlike Persuasion, I never took a college class on Yugioh Dating Customs so I have no idea when it ever happens.?
See, this is the stuff I usually delete but like psh whatever, itâs a dating episode, so for once this isnât a tangent, and yes, I am reading too much into this, thank you.
Anyway, after Joey asks Yugi what to do and then telephones what Yugi just told him to Mai enough times, Mai beats Jean Claud Magnum and avoids a lifetime of...whatever that would have been like.
However, something is off about that game and it takes a card wizard to explain it to us although it was...........really obvious.
This is the third time someone on this show was abducted by a ninja net.
She gets kidnapped by a guy in a ninja jet suit contraption and this is her reaction!? Freakin lucid dream what the hell?
This is the weirdest show Iâve ever watched. Not so much because it has stuff other shows donât have, but because it forces me to have these expectations of what I think it is and then, once I get comfortable, completely changes it. Last episode Bakura murdered 3 established characters in a graveyard. Like, not even random people, Bakura murdered 3 named people with funny accents weâve known since last season. That was already completely insane for a kidâs show to do. But rather than address whatever the hell is going on with Bakura, weâre just going to add more to the pot and throw in this crazy asshole, too. For kicks.
Like this is a filler episode somehow? This filler episode would be an entire season of any other kidâs show.
So this episode ends with Mai hanging from a flag pole in a miniskirt, but itâs not like anyone in this city would ever peek their nose out of their window to see what the hell is going on, so at least she doesnât have to worry about upskirting an entire town. Just these two people.
And like, Joeyâs such a mess in that head anyway that like who freakin cares? Heâll probably wake up tomorrow without any memory of yesterday thanks to possession, drowning, getting beat up, tied up, and then this oncoming concussion.
Iâm pretty sure she should have stabbed him right through with this duel disk?
(the dialogue really does imply that if he had done this himself she would have been cool with it. How freakin weird is Mai?)
And then he just lets her go? Makes you wonder if it was an abduction or just a game he thought she would enjoy? I donât know. This episode was all over the place. I mean...maybe he really thought sheâd like getting caught in a net and being flown all around Domino? I donât freakin know.
Like, in my opinion she was stalked for over a year and abducted with several witnesses. But, no one is calling the cops. So like...was this weird to them? This was very weird to us...but like...maybe Mai was like âhm, that was a so-so date.â because this type of behavior is just how this universe does?
....
....
Yugioh, are you OK?
Anyways, next week:
Is the tourney cancelled because after episodes and episodes of tangents, no one ever freakin shows up and Kaiba has to go back to school to do a Chem final? Does Duke Devlin ever even do anything? Does it take 20 minutes for Bakura to walk through security because he keeps setting off the metal detector with his invisible necklace that he can never take off?

BBC Oneâs Cormoran Strike - The Cuckooâs Calling
This is a compilation of my personal thoughts on the Cormoran Strike show on BBC One. Iâm gonna divide my thoughts in different sections because thereâs a lot to talk about!
The Case
For those of you who havenât read the books, I recommend you go read them right now and then you watch the show and come back here.
Done? Great. Then Iâm sure you have already fallen in love with it. This is no CSI, no Bones, no Criminal Minds. Nothing against those, they are just different. Cormoran Strike relies on the testimonies of people who might not want to talk to him, on witnesses lying, on the little details, on the blink-and-you-miss-it kind of evidence. Cormoran is a private investigator so he has no access to sophisticated technology or complex science. That is part of the charm of this detective drama.
The show has a noir vibe to it that is supported by the cinematography, the music, and the city of London itself. [Note: the opening scene with Lula Landry was absolutely beautiful. The delicate music, the lack of words, and the snow conveyed a sense of vulnerability that I found stunning. Also, considered the violent nature of the scene, I think it was very tastefully done, without showing the gore. Great job right there].
Supporting Characters
I love how J K Rowling creates these worlds were all characters are so well defined that the universe feels real and colourful. Even when a character only shows up for five minutes, you can get a feeling of what they are like, how they live their life, and what are their principles.
The Cuckooâs Calling deals with the theme of fame. How it creates a breach between people and the toll it takes on them. Lula was a famous model, known by everyone, and yet, no one had the full version of her. No one really knew her completely. Who was the real Lula? The one her family knew or the one her friends got to know? Or maybe the driver? Maybe all at once, or none at all. This adds to the vulnerability of the character. She was alone after all.
Because she is dead, we get to know of her by the people who knew her, but these people are their own character and they have their own issues to think about. The writers donât forget that and give us little moments that show this.
Relationships
In the end, the case is closed but we remain with our main characters. How they interact with each other is what will take us from one case to the other and maintain our interest
Cormoran x Charlotte
I love how they did this! Charlotte has become a ghost in the story. We cannot see her but she is forever present, in Cormoranâs mind and in ours. What happened? Why did she run away at the beginning? (book readers still know just one side of the story) Cormoran looks like a very straight forward, no bulls**t kind of guy. He doesnât look like the kind of guy who has patience for the level of drama we saw with Charlotte, and yet this woman gets under his skin. I have no doubt that this is a puzzle that will take more books (and series) to solve.
Robin x Matthew
Oh God. Here we go. We saw Matthew very briefly in The Cuckooâs Calling, but it was almost intense. If you donât give it a second thought, he looks like a nice bloke. But alas! I donât like the man so I watched that scene with my I-hate-you googles.
When Matt gets home from work, Robin is watching old videos on the death of Lula Landry. She is looking at a picture of her and thinking about the sad ending she had.
Matt: Isnât that the model who jumped out the window?
Robin: Gosh. She was so young and beautiful.
Matt: Girls always get other girls wrong. You are miles fitter. Sheâs way too skinny.
That sounds like a compliment. Except... thatâs not what Robin was talking about. She was talking about the tragic loss of a young, beautiful girl with a promising future and he responded by comparing her body to Robinâs and bringing down one of them to uplift the other. Something is not quite right here but is no big deal so Robin lets it pass.
Then they have a pretty tender moment that makes up for the previous one and that I will not gif (please, donât ask me to gif it)
Their relationship starts to show real problems the moment she does something he doesnât like, like refusing a job she doesnât like in favor of a job that doesnât pay so well but sheâs passionate about. Jobs are a very personal thing, it where youâre going to spend most of your day, and while itâs true itâs a big decision, it is one you have to take on your own in the end.
Cormoran x Robin
Weâre getting to the meat! Ok ok, shipper googles off! The truth is that their relationship in this part was purely professional with the first traces of a friendship / partnership.
At first he is not very comfortable with her there.
Robin has just arrived to the office and they are getting to know each other. Sheâs supposed to stay for just one week, but she likes it there. From the beginning she impresses him with her efficiency and dedication. She finds coffee in an empty office, cleans everything, makes him look more professional...
But the moment he realises that this one is a keeper is this
I could almost that light bulb in his head going on and telling him âhey, she really did that!â. And so, he takes her to Lulaâs place.
And starts teaching her how to do the job. The partnership has begun!
Cormoran: Sheâs lying.
Robin: Why?
Cormoran: When you start an investigation, Robin, is like looking at an aquarium for the first time...
And she keeps impressing him with her awesomeness.
The lessons keep coming even when he is drunk. Because he sees how good she could be.
Cormoran: You have skills, Robin. A skill set.
Robin: Thanks.
Cormoran: I think youâve got to know when to ask a question and when to not ask a question. Give people time
Robin: Yeah.
This conversation also takes place when he is very much drunk âcause he just found out about Charlotte getting married to another man. This is not just Cormoran teaching Robin about the job, itâs salso him thanking her for not pressuring with questions he doesnât want to answer just yet. A friendship based on respect is blooming.
Aaaaand... Robin is a quick study and soon starts doing things on her own, gathering information at Vashti and running errands alone!
Of course she stays at the end! She is gorgeous and Cormoran needs her!
Leda Strike
Leda gets her own section in this review / meta / whatever you wanna call it because they are practically yelling at us that itâs going to be a huge plot point in the future.
The first clue is how personal it is for Cormoran
Then, in Ciaraâs place, he just canât resist looking at the picture of her in the fashion book. We get our first look at this mysterious woman who means so much to him, to the point that the relationship scarred him for life.
Leda is always present in his life.
And then this huge red light if there ever was one. Like, come on!!
Random Stuff
  > Even though I like the images of the opening scene, I donât fell the music fits the rest of the show.   > I love love love the coat!
  > I also like these little moments when we see how the characters (and the writers) think about issues that have nothing to do with the case.
  > The dress!!!!!!!!!
Need I say more?
So, these were my thoughts on the first Cormoran Strike case on BBC One. Overall, I have to say that I loved it very much.
I hope you enjoyed my ramblings and messy thoughts. Now we wait till next week for The Silkworm.

matthieu biasotto - le supplĂ©ment dâĂąme
iâm calling this a âi had this sitting in my library and didnât get to consume it until now lolâ kind of review.
truth is, i just got the audiobook for this book for free one day on audible? and i was like âhuh. okay then!â and then forgot about it until i saw it again just sitting here in my library lol
i know absolutely nothing about the author, but judging from a quick google search it doesnât seem like he has a massive audience or anything like that and itâs mostly kept in french circles so i guess itâs gonna be fun to get to know the work of somebody whoâs kind of niche!
... but of course iâm a picky motherfucker, and overall, i think this book didnât hit for me. onto the trigger list
trigger warnings:
car crashes & aftermath (detailed)
adultery
substance abuse (alcohol, drugs)
--
le supplĂ©ment dâĂąme (or âthe soul supplementâ in english, i guess) starts with a car crash. some dude on a bike gets smash bros-ed into oblivion by an oncoming car. we follow the dude who got shredded, whoâs currently between life and death, with little memory of his life nor the impact heâs had on his surroundings. his name is thomas.
now, thomas isnât alone on his self ârediscoveryâ journey, heâs joined by the ârecruiterâ, an entity taking on the form of thomasâ ten year old self. as such, he also refers to himself as âtomato ketchupâ, a childhood nickname thomas had. TK (unfortunately not TK from ling tosite sigure) has a tendency not only to be a snarky little shit towards thomas, but also scribbles a lot on a black notebook he keeps on him at all times. his scribbles, which are retellings of thomasâ life events, are how we come to discover thomasâ past as he navigates his âpresentâ, following people in his life as heâs in a comatose state in the hospital.
aaaaand itâs also how we discover thomas was actually a piece of shit. work-driven motherfucker neglecting his wife & child and cheating on his wife with a client only for the sake of grabbing more money out of his client. his child is terribly lonely, but he never gave a shit! and itâs only in spirit form as some sort of blank slate that he seems to realize âiâm bad, actually?â and seems to want to blame everyone and their fucking mom for doing him wrong when he just never owned up to his own goddamn mistakes.
i think that from this brief description, you can tell that i have little sympathy for the characters involved in this novel. iâve had the pleasure of suffering through the massive pains in the ass that are both thomas and TK, and some other characters are, well. if they donât feel like placeholders for tropes theyâre just grating.Â
the only characters i found myself genuinely liking in this novel are maĂ«l and roxanne. maĂ«lâs a poor lonely kid who makes mistakes out of desperation because heâs lost and lonely and, to be honest, i can get behind him. i just want to adopt him and be his dad. he actually feels a bit more fleshed out compared to other characters who feel like trope cardboard cutouts at times. for roxanne (who happens to be the woman who caused the accident), i guess what made me sympathize with her a lot more is her crushing guilt and how sheâs struggling with alcohol. while she was sober during the accident, the trauma she felt was enough to make her struggle between remaining sober, the source of her pride (as she was a recovering alcoholic and hadnât drunk a drop of alcohol in a year and a half in the novel), or relapsing into alcohol to cope with the trauma of seeing that sheâd critically injured a man. while she does feel kinda tropey, i did feel for her, and i feel sheâs one of the strongest characters in the book alongside maĂ«l. too bad both her and maĂ«l are supposedly minor characters compared to the massive cock of thomas dick supreme garnier over there. :/
besides my gripes with the character writing, i also had problems with the writing style in itself. letâs say that it drags on a whole lot, and it tends to jump a lot into thomas being salty internally for moments that feel like an eternity instead of showing stuff thatâs actually interesting. the writer is fond of repetitions and also just. using out of place vocab for, i guess impact??? sometimes it can work, but with this book it didnât. maybe thatâs because itâs apparently one of the writerâs first books, so there could be room for improvement with that.
itâs sad, but while the premise and the concept of seeing oneâs past through notes sounded interesting, the writing and the insufferable characters made the novel feel more like some adultery-flavored sunday soap opera than a truly fulfilling, throught-provoking experience. sad!
anyway, thatâs it for what i had to say i suppose! and remember, guys: donât let your kids grab wire cutters, thatâs irresponsible.
