Ok , so , hear me out . I like to imagine that when Mello's like in his late 30's or early 40's ( post kira , and obv he survived 🙄) he would get a phoenix tattoo maybe on his burnt arm or chest to cover the scars yk. I was inspired for this headcanon when I saw a video online that said that apparently a phoenix tattoo represents someone who has dealt with anger issues and have overcome them . So , like , it makes sense that afterall the shit he's been thru like pre kira and post kira , when he started working with Near under the title of L , that eventually lead to both of them admitting their feelings for each other and starting a relationship, he went from (one sided) hating to a very mutual loving relationship with Near . This relationship has helped him helped him and Near a lot mentally too . Like ofc he still has bad days sometimes but now Near is with him. He always was , but , we all know that his pride was too much for him to admit that he needs help , much less from NEAR of all people . So , yeah , he does have rage fits , but they're not as bad as they were during or before the Kira case . And I can totally imagine that Near would be like "oh , ok , fine by me if Mello wants to get a tattoo" and then seeing Mello shirtless with the tattoo and looking a X1000 times more hot. Like he would just blush redder than the ripest of tomatoes and just melt into a puddle cuz "OmG , Omg , omg , Mello looks so hottttt" . Maybe when they are cuddling sometime later , Near may like to just admire that tattoo and maybe even trace patterns on it.
