K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Onew

Onew is one of the five members of 2nd generation group SHINee, and debuted with them in 2008 before debuting as a soloist ten years later with Blue. Here are my credentials: If you’ve ever read my blog before, you’ll know I’m a huge ShaWol (SHINee fan), and so I’m slowly making my way through their solo discographies before eventually tackling their huge discography as a group. I’ve done Taemin, Jonghyun, Key, and now Onew, but Onew’s actually the one I know the least well, so I’m excited to get to know more! (Also shoutout to @fallsouthwinter, who knows his work like the back of their hand).

Blue is a ballad if ever there was one, and usually ballads take a lot to win me over…but this one managed! I love dancing and beautiful production, but I’m a singer at heart, and so I couldn’t help but be won over by Onew’s absolutely stunning voice mixed with such light strings. I don’t know exactly which life experiences the song is about, but the way he sings it, it’s like he’s pouring his heart into every note, and it’s quite an affecting performance, even without a translation. The MV too is gorgeous, all in shades of blue, gray, and white, swirling around him in a vortex.

Voice is quite a melancholy EP on the whole, but I still enjoyed the gentle pull-back and rush-forward of Your Scent, the catharsis in the slow-building Illusion, and especially the sweetness and warmth in the lyrics and acoustic guitar of Shine On You (my hidden gem); I go “aww” at the “I love you” every time.

Dice is a song that, somehow, I hadn’t actually heard before? It seems kind of shocking, considering it’s his most popular song. It goes the precise opposite way from Blue, being much cuter, poppier, and stranger (the last mostly in terms of music video), and overall reminded me a little of Jonghyun’s laid-back R & B style, just with a peppier edge. Though the song itself is nothing incredible, Onew’s voice makes everything more enjoyable, and the music video had me very amused (especially when they run away together, lol). I also like the bridge a lot. From the EP, also called Dice, I enjoyed the building synths in the dancy, appropriately sunny Sunshine (my hidden gem), the vintage background beat in On The Way, and the vulnerability expressed in Love Phobia.

Kirakira, of course, is a Japanese release, and returns to the orchestral style of Blue, but with a far more upbeat feeling that I think works quite well with his voice. It has an excellent driving beat from its underlying guitar (which actually gets a solo, here), and a brightness that feels like it comes from deep within. And, that music video is adorable; I can never resist a cat! This is actually my favorite single so far, which is a surprise. Apparently it’s a cover of an older J-pop song by Odu Kazumasa, and “Kirakira” literally means “shiny”, which I hope was a choice made on purpose, because if so, that’s very sweet.

From the EP, Who Sings?, I loved the jazzier direction taken with the building strings in the slowly burning (seven-minute-long!) Everything, which feels like more of an epic or opera than just a song, so I couldn’t pick anything else as my hidden gem. But, I also enjoyed the feel-good orchestral pop of Uroko.

Life Goes On is also a Japanese title, and like Kirakira, features the story of someone other than Onew in its music video (though he does appear in this one). It’s peppier from the outset, and feels like the OST of a drama set by the beach, which makes sense for a summer track. I especially enjoy its central message of joy and its encouragement for the little trials that life puts us through, and I admit that, though I expected to be bored at first, it won me over. From the EP, Life Goes On, my hidden gem was made by the 60’s indie-soft-rock vibes of Yoake No Sekai and the pathos and comfort in his voice in Lighthouse.

Circle is the first single I ever really saw from Onew, and it made me fall in love with his voice, for good reason. It’s so light and airy, but holds so much warmth and inner strength in it, which makes it quite unique. Circle is at times peaceful and soothing, and at others a little haunting with how high his voice goes. As a Wiccan, of course I appreciate the idea of life going on in cycles of seasons, years, and elements, and the ending with the full choir behind him mixed with the gentle strings and slow beat gave me goosebumps.

From the album, Circle, I had so many highlights: the coffee-shop vibeyness and percussive guitar of Rain On Me, the easy charm of Caramel (which reminded me of IU’s Bbibbi with its bubbly beat), the spacey synths of Anywhere, the soaring vocals and bright acoustic guitar of Paradise, the tongue-in-cheek vocalizing in the groovy No Parachute, and the cozy warmth of Walk With You. I completely understand why Billboard named it their top k-pop album of the year. Well deserved.

Inspiration and Knock On My Door are Japanese singles, and I won’t spend too much time on them. Inspiration combines a very classic K-pop winter sound (those twinkling sound effects!) with a peppy underlying beat, and is pretty enjoyable, as holiday-sounding songs go. Knock On My Door is slower and more stripped-back, opting once more for an acoustic guitar and the strength of Onew’s vocals to create what’s quite a pleasant song, but a bit forgettable.

I’m glad I did this! Looking through Onew’s discography is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I gained a brand new respect for Onew’s beautiful voice and how well it fits with strings. I don’t have the same emotional connection to his work that I do with Taemin’s, Key’s, and Jonghyun’s, but I think it could really grow on me in time.

My Top 5 songs are Kirakira, Circle, Everything, Life Goes On, and Shine On You, with No Parachute as an honorable mention. Onew gets an 8.25 out of 10 from me, which is about what I expected. Like with Kim Sejeong’s work, I’m not a fan of an overwhelming amount of ballads, but I found that besides that, it had a pretty decent balance. The genres he delves into aren’t always among my favorites, but when he nails it, he nails it.

hellooo today's reminder is what a DAY first thing i saw was jinki is back after nearly a full year (i am in Tears about how many friends behind the scenes in the industry banded together to make him his artistic safe space) and he is BEAUTIFUL his hair is long and he is being adorable in a video and he kept onew rights but the video caption said "jinki" and are you aware he's my absolute darling sunshine angel and i love him so very much. also doyoung is releasing a full length album. which i saw coming, my hypothesis is the full solo albums will be the 7th sense unit in age order, so jaehyun will be next, then mark, then it better fucking be yuta or i will burn down the fucking sm building. which speaking of. I'm thrilled for doyoung but I'm worried about the absolute lack of buildup for this album. taeyong had his youtube channel, ten was building off a good amount of momentum in China and then he shone in baggy jeans. I'm worried they might have rushed doyoung's album as a distraction from the fact that all of the company's senior artists are leaving one by one. alsoooo (and this is definitely… pessimistic) i think the flood of nct and wayv news (doyoung's album, wayv suddenly working on two albums this year, smoothie promotions being so rushed) this past few weeks was deliberately done to keep the nct/wayv brands focused on the current members, rather than people we do not speak of, in whose articles the words nct and wayv might come up often. which i really hope it isn't, the boys deserve all of the chances to shine and all of the recognition and success, but… we all know what kind of a company that dumpster fire is

Hiiii! Oh my gosh yes! I'm so happy to see him and he's doing well. And he looks so beautiful. Taemin is my first ever bias like since I was 16, hes still my baby, But after a while Onew became number one SHINee bias and still is, I just love him so much and his smile and voice and I'm just happy to see him return and hope he's doing better. Such a precious man. Also Taemin being my first bias and Yixing and Hyunjin being my ultimate biases, I just find the same man in different fonts and love them forever. Oh yay I didn't even know about Doyoungs solo album I really hopefully once the time comes he'll get equal promotions as everyone else. Yes Yuta solo album or even Johnyu duet album ooh or Johnny Hendery duet album I just love theyre dynamic. Yeah dreams comeback feels rushed and I could be wrong, shot in the dark but I think smoothie might be a euphemism. Could be wrong but I don't think the song is about smoothies. But it does seem like that and I think anyone other than you has stopped reading so far but there's a little guy and I'm happy he's not a sad little guy anymore and he's doing his little guy thing and his little guy thing is wonderful and he's a beautiful little guy. Hey! look at another little guy! who has no business enlisting, I know he's almost 30 but also him just so tiny.

Reactions, Thoughts, Whatever to HARD

HARD: Even better on the second listen! Not my favorite title track still, but SHINee never puts out a flop. It's just not my thing bc I'm not super into hip-hop. I do love that anti-drop part, its my favorite part.

JUICE: I THINK U LIIIIKE ME I THINK U LIIIIIIIIKE ME. Can't complain. 10/10 would slutty dance to in a club if I went to clubs or danced. Also part of the instrumental reminds me of SOME final fantasy field battle theme but I can't fuckin figure out which. Also Onews falsetto. Mwah.

10x: Instant thought- this is a Persona soundtrack. Like you could plop this into any Persona game from 3-5 and tbfh it would fit in perfectly. GODS its so good. Also it sounds like a sequels to U Need Me which is one of my favorites from 1of1. Absolutely my favorite so far.

Satellite: The fuckin begining vocals, I'm already in orbit guys. It has such a nice feel? I dunno how to describe it? The fucking high notes tho;;. The song also sounds like Jjong had a hand in writing it tbh, it gives me the same feeling as some of the Odd and 1of1 tracks. It feels really nice they can capture that feeling.

Identity: fuck 10x I'm like 20 seconds in and this is my new favorite. The synth!! The bloopy noises for the instrumental!! The harmonies on the chorus!!! Definitely has a more retro sound which I am ALWAYS down for! Very 80s sounding but still modern, fucking love it. Also each track so far has had an Onew Hitting A High Note moment and I'm always bere for that.

The Feeling: Just an all around good feeling SHINee song. There's always one song in an album that feels like it's for the fans and this is definitely it. It's just a nice lil hug.

Like It: ANOTHER BANGER!!! The chrous is so bouncy I love itt. Sorry I got kinda sucked into listening to it that I had like no thoughts besides I'm Having Fun and yknow what, that's sometimes all you need. Also, deja-vu(boo) nice Jonghyun reference.

Sweet Misery: again another one that just feels good to listen to! I just liked sitting here listening to it! Its weird how this one made me feel besides that I really liked it. I could like, sorta picture an mv in a certain era? It felt nostalgic somehow.

Insomnia: Already liking the echoy effect. The swingy tempo, Keys falsetto, TAEMIN RAPPING!!!! So fucking happy Taemin is rapping more in this album, he's pretty good!! All of SHINee can rap pretty decently, I'm glad they're showing that off. (Onew may be the weakest but like I said, still isn't bad)

Gravity: Ending off with a nice slow song;; Another one that feels good, its nice and soft. I always adore Minhos voice in songs like this because he is such a great vocalist. Def feels like a song to hold your partner and sway to. Amazing.

HARD - Okay 12 hours later, I’ve grown to enjoy it. HARD is to me what Shalala is to Coco (I still can’t get there lol but I do find myself saying ‘Let’s go~~’ often lol). I love the piano, love the instrumental, love Onew and Kibum’s vocals. Honestly, I like the song… the lyrics are just corny and annoying haha. If I ignore them I like it 😂 I get that Taemin wants to show off his rapping chops lol, but I’m happy to just take his word for it 🤪

JUICE - I LOVE the bridge - it pushed it above HARD for me at first. I honestly like the rapping in this song - which is not something I often seek out in SHINee songs. I know I said I didn’t need Taemin rapping but I like it here haha he’s got a nice twangy voice for it. Some nice vocal choices here in general.

10X - This falls into the overly familiar SHINee song category for me - there is something about this song that is just a bit… 90s boy band in the chorus? To me. If I wasn’t refusing to ever engage with the Backstreet Boys again I would dig through their discography to find a comparison lol. I like the vocal flourishes here and there. It has interesting and diverse sections. Onew sounds so good.

Satellite - A SONG ABOUT A SATELLITE? I wanted to love it, but I don’t really rank this is as one of the stronger ones on the album. It feels very classic SHINee b-side sound - a song that is just filling out the album with their impressive vocal skill and sound, like something like Hold You or Lipstick. A technically good song I will forget once it ends lol. The chanty bit does remind me of NCT which is cute - it’s interesting how different that sounds with 4 voices as opposed to like 9.

Identity - AMAZING INCREDIBLE FLAWLESS PERFECT. Taeminnie my love step aside and let Kibum pick the titles from now on and forever. This is just so good. Very SHINee, love the ascending vocals leading into the chorus. Such a cute song, such a JOURNEY - I love it.

The Feeling - When this was released as the pre-single release, I was like ok cute? In the context of the album, I think it’s delightful - it’s really nicely slotted between Identity - a song about pride and a strong sense of self - and Like It, which is less heavy, more cute. It does well. So naturally they’ll put it somewhere else in the repack lol. I do think it’s kinda ~generic~ though lol

Like It - Love this - so freaking cute. The live performance is adorable. Such a fun fresh little number. Very classic fun SHINee.

Sweet Misery - I love this song - I’m not sure why it didn’t hit as hard the first time I heard it. I think I thought the evocation of the title was a little too cloying. But it’s so beautiful! Lovely vocals. It feels very driving down the highway with the windows down on a summer day, but I guess sad about it? Lol

Insomnia - Very beautiful, romantic, atmospheric. I love it so much. The layered vocals are wild. Also perfect to me. Kibum’s got these midnight—MIDNIGHT—FEEEELINGS - I’m ascending. Also return of Taemin rapper lol. He sounds good. Minho’s vocals are lovely.

Gravity - pretty, sweet.

- I’m sorry for being very slow with the requests. I’ve been having a hard time writing lately 😓 I’m still very unsure about this but I hope it’s okay! Otherwise, I can make a part two later on when I’m back on my feet. Also, thank you so much to those who helped me with ideas! ❤️🙏

Onew:

When both you and Onew had a day off at the same time you decided to make the most of it and go on a date. Normally you would do something simple, such as going to a cafe, having a picnic or simply strolling around downtown. However, for some reason, your boyfriend suggested visiting the city Zoo and since you didn’t have a better idea you agreed. 

It didn’t really strike you as a common place for a date, but rather a place for families, but that thought changed when your boyfriend turned into an excited child at the sight of live animals and you couldn’t help but find it adorable. 

The two of you calmly walked around the whole zoo to examine each animal and talked about anything and everything in the process. You were also enjoying the fact that you could share some fond and harmless skin-ship, such as holding hands and exchanging small kisses every now and then. In addition, your boyfriend made you laugh with some of his silly antics, which you could never grow tired of. 

It was a very wholesome date and although it was more fun and chaotic than it was sweet and romantic you didn’t mind it one bit since it was spent with your favorite person on earth. 

“Today was really fun.” You told him as you were heading for the exit and expected him to respond but instead he simply smiled and gripped your hand a bit tighter as he headed in a specific direction. It didn’t lead to any of your apartments and when you asked him about it he simply stated that it was a ‘surprise’. 

After a brief walk through a small park and up a steep hill you eventually reached a small viewing spot where you could gaze over a large portion of the city below and it was indeed a spectacular sight. 

“Wow. It’s really beautiful.” You managed to utter in a mix of surprise and admiration. 

Your boyfriend simply agreed and led you both over to a bench where you could sit down. “I like this place.” He expressed in a calm voice and went on to explain how he came across it and also his wish to show it to you. His words made you smile as you held onto his hand with both of your own and fumbled with some of his fingers, as you tended to do subconsciously at times. He hadn’t told you but it was something he was actually rather fond of. 

The two of you spent the rest of the afternoon at your new location, watching the city turn dark as the sun set, before you headed home. Your boyfriend walked you the whole way, as he always would, and outside of your apartment building you shared a long hug and a sweet kiss before ultimately letting go of each other. He then uttered the words ‘Let’s meet again soon’ with his usual bright smile as he waved and watched you get inside safely. 

Jonghyun: 

After dating for a little over a year you and Jonghyun both decided to take some time off work and go on a trip together. The location was Tokyo, Japan and it was only over the weekend but it gave you a couple of days of pure freedom to spend however you liked. 

Since it was early spring you decided to visit a large park with a botanical garden on your first full day. The weather was perfect and you could roam around peacefully to examine the beautiful flowers and large cherry blossom trees that had just begun to bloom. It was a very simple but romantic idea of a date that you both enjoyed. 

Moreover, walking around holding hands and taking a closer look at the different plants, you found a patch of grass where you could sit down and eat some snacks that you had bought beforehand. 

It would evolve into a deep conversation which would then be followed by some harmless cuddling. At first it made you feel a bit shy, as there were many people around and you weren’t always comfortable with PDA but your irresistible boyfriend assured you no one was watching. In addition, he also flashed one of his very enchanting grins which made you want to roll your eyes in a playful fashion. 

In the end, you were able to relax and simply enjoy your sweet moment. None of it was actually new but it still gave you a sense of butterflies in the pit of your stomach. 

After talking and enjoying each other’s company for some time you decided to explore the rest of the park and also take a bunch of pictures before ultimately leaving. Though, your day didn’t end there. You spent the remaining time exploring the city, doing some shopping and also having dinner at one of Jonghyun’s favorite restaurants, as it wasn’t his first visit. 

All in all, it was definitely a very calm and romantic day but you preferred it that way and any time spent together with your amazing boyfriend was always wholesome. 

“I love you.” The words came out randomly as you were on your way back to the hotel but he didn’t seem to mind. He simply chuckled in a surprised fashion before returning them in a loving tone. 

“I love you too y/n.” 

Key: 

Since you and Key had been together for a long time you were both comfortable in your relationship and didn’t often go on traditional dates or make grand plans just the two of you. Instead, your idea of a date was simply doing something together that you would both enjoy. 

On a weekend when you were both free you decided to do just that and since you were both interested in art you agreed to check out a new exhibition at your favorite museum. 

Despite it being a weekend it wasn’t overly busy and you could both walk around calmly, hand in hand, and examine the new art. In addition, you also decided to visit some old favorites and went to the part of the museum dedicated to the painter who sadly lost his life too young. Vincent Van Gogh. You had already seen his works several times but there was still something about it that would pull you in. 

“Wow. Van Gogh’s art is really beautiful, no matter how many times you see it.” You exclaimed in slight awe. 

At first Key was silent, almost as if he was thinking something over, and then turned to you camly. “Sure they are but they aren’t as beautiful as the art whose hand I’m currently holding.” 

His suddenly flirty words and teasing smirk certainly made you blush but you then nudged his arm and fought your urge to roll your eyes at his cheesiness. Though, it would be a lie to say you didn’t enjoy it. Especially when his eyes also sparked with sincerity, which made you all the more flustered. 

Later, as you both exited the museum your boyfriend suddenly tugged you and started walking in a different direction, stating something about ‘wanting to take you somewhere equally beautiful as the painting you had admired’. 

You didn’t question him and as you realized where he was taking you your face instantly lit up in surprise. 

“Namsan tower?” 

He nodded in response and kissed your cheek before you headed towards the cable car that would take you to the top of the mountain where the tower and observation deck was located. 

As it was late afternoon you could camly stroll along and watch the sunset together. It was a very romantic end to an otherwise casual date but it was just the way you both preferred it. 

Minho:

After a busy week you and Minho were both excited at the idea of meeting up in your favorite part of town and enjoying a fun night out in each other’s company. 

It was something you did ever so often as opposed to having indoor dates at home and this particular night you decided to visit the cinema to see a movie together. 

By the time you arrived your boyfriend was already there waiting for you close to the entrance. Despite it being a casual date he appeared to have dressed up ever so slightly and looked as handsome as ever. It made you smile as you made your way over to greet him the way you normally would, with a hug and a quick but sweet kiss, before you made your way inside. 

The movie in question was a good one. Minho had picked it, thinking it was something you would enjoy, as it had an exciting love story plot, and he wasn’t wrong. Though, even if it had been uninteresting it wouldn’t matter as you simply enjoyed being in his company. 

Later, after leaving the cinema and getting something to eat you decided to roam around the city, as you often would, and ended up at an arcade. It wasn’t a surprise since you were both fond of games and became competitive as you were put against one another. At times you would find yourself stuck in there for hours on end, competing while having fun and simply forgetting about time. This time was certainly no exception. You tried out a variety of games, where you beat him at some and then giggled at his sulking face. 

You spent most of the evening there until you finally decided that enough was enough. It was already rather late at that point but before calling it a day Minho suggested walking along the han-river since it was a rather beautiful sight at night and you also knew it was something he really enjoyed, so you agreed. 

“Did you have fun today?” He questioned out of the blue after walking in silence for some time but you didn’t hesitate to nod in response. 

Although you could both be romantic you could also enjoy a casual day like this simply playing games and having fun. In fact, you enjoyed it as much as going to a fancy restaurant or having a cozy night at home. 

You definitely wanted to do it again sometime very soon. 

Taemin: 

Although you and Taemin had been dating for a while it was still unknown to the public and anyone outside of your close circle of friends or family. Therefore, you rarely met up outside just the two of you and if you did it was always in a remote place or late at night to avoid anyone possibly spotting you and making a story out of it. It was tough at times, as you would find yourselves spending a lot of time apart, but you knew that it was for the better. 

After you planned to meet up one night Taemin picked you up in his car outside your apartment building and then drove off to one of your usual places. 

You were both wearing casual clothing rather than being dressed up but neither of you put much thought on that. Instead, you focused on actually spending time together and being able to talk and catch up on everything that had happened since you last met in person. Your relationship was rather simple in that sense.

At your chosen location, a small beach by the river, you both walked around freely for a bit before you found a place to sit down. It was completely vacant, since it was nighttime, and you could cuddle and watch the night sky together without the fear of being spotted. 

It was a simple but wholesome date where you shared some food you had brought along and shared endless conversations about your lives or whatever was on your minds. Of course, you also used the opportunity to share some skin-ship. 

“We should meet like this more often.” Your boyfriend expressed along with a small sigh as he hugged you tightly in a search for warmth. “I really hate it when we are apart.” 

His sincere words made you smile. Especially as they were followed by him sulking, which you couldn’t help but find cute. 

“Then let’s make more time to meet up. It should be okay as long as we’re careful, right?” 

He nodded to show he agreed and then stared at you for a moment while smiling It sort of made you feel shy, almost to the point that you were blushing, and you ultimately uttered a brief ‘what?’ to find out what he was up to. 

At first he shrugged so you expected him to mumble ‘nothing’ in return but he didn’t. Instead, he raised his hand to gently poke your cheek with his index finger. It definitely puzzled you, until he suddenly uttered his new favorite English word in a playful voice. 

“Adorable.” 

Since it wasn’t the first time he used the word, and probably not the last, you couldn’t help but roll your eyes. Although it was done in a fond fashion, since despite him being annoying you still loved him more than anything.

Impressions on the first two listens:

Don’t Call Me - Super different. It does have EXO vibes for me, especially in the choruses. I feel like EXO as a unit use their vocals this way more than SHINee. I loveee the dynamics of this song, the drums, the piano. It feels very sweeping and epic. Huge shame about the video. The choreo reminds me of NCT, but the song itself doesn’t at all.

Heart Attack - MY FAULT - my expectations for this song were way too high. It’s great, but I thought I’d be looping it constantly and I won’t be. It feels just a little too 90s boy bands in the verses. The chorus is amazing. EDIT: wait i love it now lmao

Marry You - I can’t get over how different this feels to hearing their live performance of it. It’s still great. I think it’s only helped by the additions. The bass is super, super cool.

CØDE - LOVEEEEEE CØDE. Love the synth, love Taemin’s vocals, Kibum and Minho’s little “response” sections, Onew’s falsetto. Sooooo good. Kenzie 🔥Kibum sounds great.

I Really Want You - fun guitar, I like this super poppy energy and how Kibum arpeggiates his voice. The rap section made me snort. I don’t really have other thoughts 😂

Kiss Kiss - I love this funky song so much. Love the vocals!! Love the guitar! I wonder if this is the second single. It’s cool that two songs in a row the guitar has stuck out to me. I rarely, if ever, think about the guitar with SHINee or any kpop really. Onew’s opening line is SO DIFFERENT from anything I have ever heard from him. Eyes! Nose! Lips! OooooooAHHHH. The kissing sounds are HILARIOUS lmao. But I just love this song so much. So fun, so pretty. The bridge is STUNNING with Taemin/Kibum and Onew/Minho harmonizing. LOVE it. Onew’s vocal runs at the end are incredible.

Body Rhythm - Love how Kibum sounds on this one. I really adore this song. My non universal comment is that something about it reminds me of some Bollywood song rolling around in my brain somewhere from yesteryear haha. This is a fave but I don’t have much to say.

Attention - I love this song!! The chorus is sooo light and lovely. Vocal arrangement is soooo wonderful.

Kind - The first time it was such a tearjerker! The “You always know, always know” refrain is so nice. Such a warm ending to the album after a light track like Attention. It really shows how well-sequenced the album is (as always) in how it moved from Don’t Call Me to being able to culminate with Kind.

In firehouse surrender au, Captain Onew is also part of the family. He’s married to Minho and Key’s cousin Luna. She’s Changmin’s daughter, and Changmin is Yunho’s brother. The firehouse really is a family affair. It’s ridiculous. They all love it.

Changmin was also a Captain, but he becomes Chief once Yunho retires. They’re just a big, happy, firefighting family.

But when Taemin and Kai are little, they just constantly only call Onew “Captain.” It’s adorable. It’s along the same line as them constantly calling Yunho “Chief.” It’s mainly because that’s what they always hear other firefighters call them. Uncle Changmin is also almost always “Captain.” It can get a little confusing.

“CAPTAIN!” Taemin squeaks when he sees Onew, and he runs straight for him. Onew picks him up, bounces him in his hip, and grins. Taemin is wearing a play fireman costume. “I’m a fireman too.”

“I can see that! Are you gonna work for Captain Onew today?” Onew humors him.

“Uh-huh!” Taemin squeaks. “And Chief Grampa!”

“Do you wanna go see the Chief?”

“Yes!”

So Onew brings his favorite little firefighter up to the chief’s office, knocking on the door and then sending Taemin toddling in on his own.

“CHIEF!” Taemin squeaks, waddling inside and pushing up his fire hat when it falls down in front of his eyes. It’s a bit too big for him still.

“Oh look, it’s a fireman!” Yunho gushes, and Onew chuckles before going back downstairs.

“I’m ready for work, Chief!” Taemin giggles, going around Yunho’s desk to hold onto his knees and try to climb up on his lap.

“But I don’t think you passed the fire academy yet, Mr. Fireman,” Yunho teases. “I think you might be just a tad too young.”

“Nuh-uh,” Taemin whines, gripping at Yunho’s shirt. “I’m a big boy. Daddy said so.”

“Did he now?” Yunho asks. “And what did my sweet grandson do to become a big boy?”

“Put ‘way the laundry,” Taemin tells him.

“Oh, that is a big boy task.”

“And put my toys away!”

“Did you now?”

“Yeah, Chief! I’m a big boy!”

“And I’m so proud of you,” Yunho gushes, smiling when Taemin calls him Chief in that sweet little voice. And he gives Taemin a squeeze of a hug before standing up and holding Taemin on his lap. “Now where did your Daddy get to?”

“He hadda pick up somethin’ from Captain,” Taemin tells him, wrapping his arms around Yunho’s neck. “Daddy said he won a bet!”

“A bet?” Yunho questions. “What kinda bet?”

They know damn well they’re not supposed to bet in this firehouse. It became quite a problem last year.

“Dunno,” Taemin squeaks, squeezing Yunho’s neck. “Chief, whazza bet?”

“Something you shouldn’t do,” Yunho tells him. “But you’re my good boy, aren’t you Taemin? You’d never do something so naughty.”

“Nuh-uh!” Taemin says, gasping. “I’m a good boy!”

“I know,” Yunho coos, holding the toddler close. “The best boy.”

“Yeah,” Taemin agrees, rubbing his cheek against Yunho’s. “Daddy’s a good boy, too.”

“Your daddy’s a pain in the ass is what he is,” Yunho snorts, and Taemin just giggles. “And so is that Captain. Which one is he picking up his bet from?”

“Unc’a Min,” Taemin tells him.

Yunho mutters under his breath about how his brother is a bad influence on everyone else. Taemin just giggles. They pass a fair few other firemen on their way to find Changmin and Minho, and Taemin giggles and smiles and waves at each and every one of them. They all always smile and wave back.

Yunho never sees the betting or exchanging of winnings take place, but he does give everyone a stern talking to about why betting has been banned from this firehouse. Minho and Onew aren’t even working this shift, Changmin and Key should be the only family members in today. And all four of them pretend not to look guilty. Meanwhile, Taemin wiggles around and tries to go back down on the floor, but just points at the fire truck.

“Chief, I wanna ride in the fire fuck!”

It makes everyone not so discreetly hide a laugh.

“Not today, Taemin.”

“But Grampa,” Taemin whines, tugging at Yunho’s collar. “Chief. The fire fuck!”

“Fire truck,” Yunho fries.

“Fire fuck!”

Minho ends up going over to hold Taemin in his arms instead, telling him it’s time to go home.

“No, no, no,” Taemin whines, holding his arms out to Yunho. “Chief!”

“What, what’s wrong?” Minho asks, bouncing Taemin a bit. Taemin just whines. When Yunho comes over, Taemin smiles.

“Bye bye, Chief,” Taemin says sweetly, pressing a sloppy kiss to Yunho’s cheek.

“Bye bye, Taeminnie,” Yunho laughs, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

“Daddy, gotta say bye bye to Captains and Unc’a Key!”

“Go say bye bye,” Minho laughs, putting him on the floor so he can toddler over to Changmin and Onew and Key.

Once they leave, Minho and Taemin go pick Kai up for a play date. It’s a very good day, all around.

The story:

As a child, i had a close friend and his name is Kim Kibum (Key). I have been and is still friends with Key for awhile. Growing up, i met another boy named Lee Taemin (Taemin). Taemin became close friends with me and Key that we even made our own squad.

Sadly, i had to move to a new highschool away from the two but we still kept contact and hung out together as a squad. At my new school, i met a boy named Kim Jonghyun (Jonghyun) and he was a very kind and fun person. He is my first best friend at my new school.

As i enjoyed my life at my new school, i fell in love for the first time to a boy named Lee Jinki (Onew). He had a beautiful voice and his smile is adorable. He was very kind and caring, though he can be a little clumsy sometimes.

In the middle of my school days, a person was in a rush and ran into me, causing me stumbled and fall onto a boy named Choi Minho (Minho). We accidentally brushed lips and i immediately apologized to him. I was so embarrassed, my first kiss was stolen by a stranger! Minho laughed to my behaviour and forgave me as he continued on his way.

I turned back to see who was the culprit behind this accident and apparently it was Onew. He kept apologizing for running into me and i couldn't help but laugh. I forgave him and we managed to get closer to each other. After a year of being friends with Onew, i managed to tell him how i felt and he felt the same way as he asked me out on a date. We dated for about 2 years. We enjoyed spending time together and he was my first time. One day, he proposed to me in the middle of our date. But sadly i wasn't ready and due to that he decided to end things with me because he wanted something serious. I was heartbroken but i understood his wishes.

Months went by after the breakup and Jonghyun as my best friend, helped to comfort me throughout those times and i fell for him instead. At the time Taemin also had feelings for me and i decided to give up on Jonghyun and accepted Taemin's feelings because Jonghyun had another person in mind. After a few months of dating, i realized that Key also had feelings for me yet i didn't realize it and it was too late.

After about 2 years of dating, Taemin proposed to me and after another year, we got married. We were a happy couple until one day, Taemin felt fed up with me being the lazy and messy housewife that i am and wanted a divorce.

After 4 years of hating men from all the things i went through, i met my highschool colleague, Minho. He was the man i first kissed and we managed to hang out after awhile of not meeting each other. After about a year, we fell in love with each other. After about 4 years of dating, i got married to Minho who is actually my soulmate all along. We are now happily married and he is now the father of my 2 children.

I swear this is a VERY weird scenario 😂😂😂

Ready When You Are | Onew

The past few nights, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. Tonight was one of those rare nights where I was actually able to sleep through a majority of the night. Other nights, I’d wake up and end up staring at the ceiling for hours on end or eventually get up to walk around to make myself tired again.

I begin to stir when I feel something grazing against my ear. Opening my eyes slowly, I notice the familiar figure lying beside me as he always does every morning. My husband, Jinki, resting against his hand facing me. He’s brushing his fingers through my hair, which he usually does to relax me and help me fall asleep. I’m usually awake before him so seeing him up before me is surely a new sight.

I smile as my vision of him becomes clearer, “How long have you been awake?” I ask.

“Long enough to know that you slept well for once.” He says in a low whisper.

Suddenly, I hear his stomach growl. I look at him with wide eyes, “That long?” I reach over to hug his waist. “You should’ve woke me up if you were hungry.”

He kisses the top of my head as he groans, “No, I couldn’t. You were sleeping so beautifully.”

I hum sarcastically, “I’m sure watching the drool go down my chin was extremely sexy to look at.”

“It was. It almost pained me to have to wipe it away.” He says jokingly.

Jinki and I have been married for a few years but nothing really changed between us. Our love is just as big as it was when we were dating. We met when we were working together on a drama. I recently finished filming a drama a month ago and now I’m taking some time to relax more often. The only thing I’ve been doing is making small appearances on variety shows when I’m asked to.

I’ve always known since day one that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Jinki, with or without the fame to his name had. Jinki had told me that he knew that I was the one he would marry because I never left his side after the world found out we were together. There were times where he wanted to push me away but I knew that people would come to accept it eventually. No one can stay mad at Jinki forever.

After eating breakfast together, I finish cleaning up the dishes when Jinki comes up from behind me to give me a warm hug.

I chuckle at the feeling, “Shouldn’t you be getting ready for work?” I ask, knowing very well what his schedule always is.

He groans, “I’m just gonna stay home today. Doesn’t that sound good?”

I dry my hands before turning around to face him, “You know I would love for you to be home all the time but you have a responsibility to your members and fans. SHINee can’t have a lazy leader.”

He sighs, “Fine, then how about you come with me?”

I’m used to going with Jinki to all of his promotions but today I have an important appointment that I need to stick to. One that Jinki doesn’t know about for his own good.

I shake my head, “I’m feeling a bit sluggish this morning but I’ll try to meet you for your interview.”

His face falls serious as he continues to look at me, “Have you been okay?”

I nod, “Yes.” I say confidently or else he’ll try to make an excuse to stay home when he needs to get back to work after being on a hiatus for over a year. “So please don’t start worrying about me when you have a busy schedule this week with the new album. I’m fine, so go get ready for the day. I’ll be here cleaning up things. Plus, I have a busy week myself.”

Once Jinki left the house, I had some personal things to take care of followed by my own work schedule. Today, I’m filming an episode of Happy Together with other fellow actors. The cast is very friendly so the atmosphere is natural enough for me to enjoy myself and have fun with everyone.

“I think the most successful drama this year so far must’ve been Y/N’s.” Yoo Jae-suk comments.

I shake my head, “Oh no, there were far more interesting dramas that came out other than mine. I can’t say that mine is the only one.”

“I watched it all, including the love scenes you had with your co-star. That was really steamy, did your husband watch it?” Jun Hyun-moo asks.

I chuckle, recalling the night we watched the drama together. He was understanding about the scenes that were more intimate but he’d find a way to distract himself whenever the scenes came on.

“He’d pretend to watch it.” I explain, “He was proud but seeing the intimate scenes made it a little weird for him.”

“Are you planning to do anymore dramas or films in the near future?” Uhm Hyun-kyung asks.

I shake my head, “There’s nothing in the works as of right now and I’m not too concerned about it at the moment. I’m taking the time to support my husband’s comeback since it’s really important to him.”

The hosts all awe in admiration causing me to blush. A lot of the times, people assumed that Jinki and I would say cute things for show but everything we say about one another has been from our honest feelings. If we were never honest with one another, we wouldn’t have made it through the first month of dating.

“Then you and Onew should just do another drama together.” Hyun-moo suggested.

“I think his main concern right now is working hard with SHINee since it’s been a year that they’ve last had a comeback.”

One of the other actresses sitting beside me squeals, “My gosh, I can’t wait to see how adorable your babies will look like.”

I laugh redirecting the conversation before anyone could start asking questions about when Jinki and I will be planning to have a baby. It’s not a touchy subject but it’s something we haven’t really talk about much. I don’t wanna give people the wrong idea since a lot of actresses that are married have had the stereotype of being workaholics.

After my interview is over, I stop by the station where SHINee is filming their TV interview. As to not be a distraction, I watch the interview from the far side of the set to keep out of sight. They start off by talking about their new album and how it came to be as well as the tragedy that happened to the group the beginning of the year.

Getting halfway through the interview, they start to talk about their personal lives.

“Onew is the only member that’s married, right?” The interviewer asks.

The other members nod.

“If you spend enough time with him, he’ll remind you.” Kibum adds, “He doesn't let us forget that he has a wife.”

The interviewers laugh, “Does he talk about her often?”

Minho explains, “The thing is, he always finds some way to bring her up in a conversation. For example, when Y/N’s drama ended last month, we all met up for dance practice when he showed us an article praising the drama’s finale and how high the ratings were.”

Taemin adds, “Aside from loving her so much, he’s very proud of her.”

The interviewer asks, “Does that cause you to not get along with Y/N?”

“We don’t have a problem with Y/N at all. We love her as our sister-in-law but Onew himself annoys us.” Key says.

Jinki sits there quietly listening to the member talk about me. His cheek and ears have a slight red tint to them.

I stifle a laugh as they continue to clown around with Jinki. I’ve heard all jokes about him being the first to marry so nothing any interviewer says can really strike a cord anymore.

“Since you’re the oldest and the first to get married, have you and Y/N thought about having children yet?” The nerves begin to build as Jinki’s face falls slightly but he picks himself back up.

“Not as much as you would think, but we’re leaving it up to fate. Should we become pregnant tomorrow, or next week, or even next year, it’ll be the most joyous occasion of our lives. I love my wife dearly and I believe that she will make an amazing mother when the time comes. The anticipation just makes it much greater.”

I catch myself tearing up about the response. I know that Jinki is just saying no lightly since the subject hasn’t been brought up at all between us but I know that he’s telling the truth about being happy when he gets the news about becoming a father.

I meet up with Jinki when he finishes filming. He suggested we go out to eat for his break time before going to a fansign event.

I smile as I watch him eat in peace. He’s been working nonstop from preparing and promoting SHINee’s new album that I find it satisfying when I get to see him sit still and relax for awhile.

“Oppa, you could’ve eaten with the members. You’ll have to meet up with them again right after.”

He shakes his head, “I’ve shared enough meals with them to last me a lifetime. I haven’t had as many with my wife.” He says the last sentence in an aegyo voice.

I laugh, “Don’t force yourself to be cute.”

“As long as it makes you laugh, I’ll do it all the time.” He smiles at me lovingly.

He continues eating until something comes to his mind, “Oh I almost forgot, since it’s almost your birthday, is there anything special you want? Anything you want, oppa will get it for you.”

“Just having you at home is good enough for me. Don’t even think about throwing a surprise party because I already know about it.”

Jinki shrugs, “What are you talking about?” He asks.

I smirk, “I already tricked Taemin into telling me.”

He scoffs, “Nice try, I didn’t tell him about the party this time.” He pauses as I raise my eyebrows at him, “Damn, you’re good.”

“You should know by now that nothing gets by me.”

Suddenly, his face falls serious. His eyes lower to look at his food and avoids making eye contact. I start to feel uneasy at his demeanor.

“What?” I ask.

“I was just thinking about the interview. About having kids.”

My heart begins to race, thinking this might be the moment. The baby talk that we haven’t fully had yet.

I act like it’s nothing serious, “Oh, what about it? Do you wanna have one?”

He starts coughing, nearly choking on his food. “Huh? N-no-I mean yes-I mean...Do you?” He asks.

I laugh trying not to stress him out any further, “Oppa,” I take his hand in mine, “I love you very much. When I said yes to marrying you, I was saying yes to being with you for the rest of my life. Growing with you, which includes expanding our family, if that is something you want. I know now isn’t the best time but just know that I’ll wait.”

He shakes his head, “It’s not about the timing. It’s more about being excitingly nervous about it all. I also don’t want people to think that it’s you not wanting to have a baby because you’re the best actress in the world.”

I chuckle, “I wouldn’t go that far but don’t worry, you know I can handle it or else you wouldn’t have married me.”

He smiles, “That was one of them but you know there are a million other reasons why.”

“I would love to hear every single one of those reasons but you have to get going or else you’ll be late for the event.”

Having the conversation about the future like this is always a good way to be open with one another about what we want. The last serious talk we had was about us possibly breaking up. He was feeling guilty about his schedule taking up most of our time together as well as the fans that were against our relationship. Jinki had the fear that I wouldn’t wait around for him but when I reassured him about it and proved to him that I could, he proposed to me a few months later.

About a week goes by and it’s the day before my birthday. I packed a heavy schedule today in order to have the day off tomorrow since Jinki was working hard planning for my birthday party.

I finish up a busy day by nightfall. Jinki had told me that he would be working extra at the SM building with the members so I have time to wash up and wait for him to get home. To my surprise, I quickly realize that I’m not home alone.

The first thing I see is a trail of single roses leading down the hall and up the stairs towards our bedroom. I should’ve known he wouldn’t wait until tomorrow to pull off a surprise.

Not being able to hide my grin, I head up the stairs and towards our bedroom. The door is slightly ajar as I push it open. Dropping my bag, along with my jaw, at the sight of the room being surrounded by vases of roses.

In the corner of the room, Jinki appears. I couldn’t see him since he was hiding behind one of the many vases of roses.

“Are you surprised?” He asks with a wide smile.

I nod as I take another long look at all the roses before reaching over to pull Jinki in for a hard embrace along with a series of kisses all over his face.

“Oppa,” I call his name in a whiny voice, “why do you spoil me so?”

He chuckles as he tightens his hold and lifts me off the ground, “My wife deserves the best surprises I can give her, especially when you’re working so hard around your birthday.”

Wrapping my legs around his waist, I lean back to look at his face, “You’re gonna run out of ideas if you keep this up.”

“I don’t think so. As long as my heart wants to make you smile, it will come up with endless ideas.” He says giving me a peck on the lips.

I smile at his adorable face when I decide that maybe now should be the best time to let him know how much I love him as well.

“Oppa, since it’s my birthday and you asked me what I wanted, can I tell you now?” I ask.

He curiously nods, “Of course.”

He puts me down as I head back to where I dropped my bag. Going through it, I pull out SHINee’s new album. My heart begins to race as I hand him the album.

He laughs as he takes it, “What’s this for?”

“I like to have your albums in my collection. I also like to have your signature along with the album. It makes me feel like a special fan.”

“I thought you said my signature on our marriage certificate was the most important autograph?” He says.

“It always will be.” I shrug, “You know how I like to get your photo cards from all the albums. Can you check to see if I got yours?”

He nods before opening the box-like album. He digs out the lyric book and photo book until he reaches the bottom where the CD is.

He smiles as he reveals his photo card, “Tada! What a handsome face.”

He pulls it out to hand it to me but stops mid-action when he sees the other black and white card that I placed in it beforehand.

“What is this?” He asks picking up the 4 by 3 card in confusion.

“My ultrasound. 8 weeks to be exact.” I hear him gasp as he drops the album to grip the other corner of the picture to take a closer look. “Congratulations, you’re gonna be an appa.”

Slowly, he turns his head to look at me. “Really? You’re really pregnant?”

I nod, “I hope this isn’t too sudden. I know you-”

Before I can finish my sentence, Jinki cuts me off with his lips. He returns the happiness of the surprise by kissing my face like I did to him. Before I knew it, he was swinging me around in his arms.

I look at him in shock at his reaction. I’d assume that he would become quiet and scared by the news but this was more than I could’ve hoped for,  “I didn’t expect you would be this excited.”

He kisses me a few more times before responding, “I meant what I said about becoming pregnant being the joyous occasion when it happens. Knowing that’s it’s you, I know that you’re gonna be a wonderful mother.”

I can’t help but tear up, “You’re gonna be an amazing father. Besides, you’ve raised four kids already. How hard could another one be?”

Song Review: “Countless” by SHINee

On September 10, 2018 SHINee released their newest song “Countless,” along with “The Story of Music: Epilogue,” which includes the new song along with all fifteen songs from the previous three episodes in their series, “The Story of Light.” Essentially, “The Story of Light: Epilogue,” is an album repackage of their previous three mini albums. In this blog post, I will be doing a (really late) review on SHINee’s newest song, “Countless,” along with their album repackage/epilogue situation.

This song is SHINee’s latest song and the final addition to their series “The Story of Light.” Before the song was officially released, SHINee performed this song at their FanParty on September 9, 2018. I have managed to find a fancam for Onew, Taemin, and Minho. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a fancam for Key for some reason.

Watching the music video for the first time, I was amazed. The music video was very aesthetic, and with each member having their own individual shots along with group shots.

SHINee’s Onew in “Countless”

    In SHINee, my “bias” (favorite member) is Key/Kibum, however Onew has been a very strong “bias-wrecker” (someone who is a close second to your favorite and occasionally becomes your favorite for a short time) recently, especially with the release of this music video. He looked so cute throughout the music video. All his individual scenes with him on a couch on the phone was really cute and his adorable expressions made me incredibly soft and happy. Although I was a huge fan of Onew’s bright orange hair during SHINee’s “The Story of Light” Episodes 1, 2, and 3 promotions and miss it a lot, I still enjoy his new natural, brown hair. It makes him look really young an cute, and on top of that, it gives his poor scalp a break from constant bleaching and dyeing. Onew’s voice was so beautiful in the song and fit it perfectly, as expected of legendary vocalist. His voice is one of my favorite voices in K-POP male artists, as it can be soft and soothing or really powerful.

SHINee’s Minho in “Countless”

    Minho looked so good in this music video, I was shook. His individual shots were beautiful, because, wow, who doesn’t love a smart man who can read? The set was beautiful, the lighter blue, pink, and cream background really allowing him to stand out in the middle. Similar to Onew, Minho had natural hair, in a comma style. Dark hair is a personal favorite color of mine of Minho, especially when styled in a comma shape, so I really enjoyed both Minho’s and Onew’s hair in the music video. Minho’s original position in SHINee was a rapper, and a common assumption with rappers, especially with those who come from SM Entertainment is that they become rappers because their singing was not good. However, this is not true at all, and Minho is a great example. In this song, his voice was so soft and smooth. I really enjoyed his voice and liked how he sang in the song rather than rapping.

SHINee’s Key/Kibum in “Countless”

    Next is Key or Kibum. He is my bias in SHINee as mentioned before, and he blew me away in this song and music video. To begin, his hair. I loved Kibum’s bleached and dyed buzzcut from the three previous episodes of “The Story of Light,” however to bleach his hair is really damaging. It is evident that he is in the process of growing out his hair right now, and this awkward short-ish hair period looks really cute on him, and he just looks like a shiny little egg. His voice in this song, though, left me in awe. Kibum’s voice, I find to be really unique, so I really enjoyed that “Countless” was a slower song, because I could listen to the song and enjoy his and the other members’ voices in the song. On top of his hair and voice, I also loved Key’s outfit in the music video. There was a lot of patterns and different cuts going on with his outfit, yet all the pieces looked so good together. I particularly liked the little, low-tied tie he had on, because it somehow made the outfit even cuter.

SHINee’s Taemin in “Countless”

    Lastly, is SHINee’s maknae (youngest), Taemin. To begin, his outfit for this music video was so beautiful. It matched with his mainly blue set, so his individual scenes a pretty monochrome aesthetic situation. Yet, somehow, I felt like Taemin got less screen-time in comparison to his older members, since it was really hard for me to get decent screenshots, but I’m not sure if this is true. I tried to find a screen-time distribution video, but couldn’t find one from a trustworthy channel/account. Even if Taemin received less screen-time than the other members, I feel like his scenes were all very beautiful. Something I noticed with Taemin is his amazing stage presence and acting. In this music video, he appears to be singing the song with great passion and his face helps deliver his emotions. On top of that, his high/long note after the bridge was simply beautiful and his voice is simply beautiful.

    This song received absolutely no promotion from SM Entertainment, because SM doesn’t know how to promote their artists properly apparently. I heard about “The Story of Light: Epilogue” through a fan account on Instagram rather than seeing any post or update from SME themselves. However, this isn’t much of a concern as despite the lack of promotion, the song and album still had great success.

I never took a look at what book Minho was reading in this music video, however upon further research, I found out that the book is “The Ruby Knight” by David Eddings, the second story in the series “Elenium.” This book, is said to be apart of a deeper meaning behind “The Story of Light” series. I would never be able to explain the theory myself, however, there is an article discussing a possible theory for the whole series that I found rather interesting.

    Overall, “Countless,” and “The Story of Light” series as a whole was a work of art. The music, music videos, and aesthetics are incredible and I am so happy to finally begin to listen to SHINee a lot more! Every song in the album was amazing,my current favorite being “Chemistry,” and they all are really catchy. The addition of the special track “Lock You Down,” was surprising, but still great. I just really loved this album and hope I can purchase the physical album of “The Story of Light: Epilogue,” sometime soon to finally have a SHINee album in my small album collection and support their music.

So I thought I’d make a list of the songs in my „kpop“ playlist and write a little about them because I’m bored. These are supposed to be chronological, but after looking at the list I’m not so sure about it also because I love to buy music in bulks.

 This song is a little scary tbh, apart from the badass vibes

I always loved T.O.P’s deep ass voice and with GD’s high pitched rap it’s just perfect

The MV is funny, creepy and a bit fucked up but what did we expect honestly :D

They rhyme aLOT in this song which makes it really interesting to listen to

made me addicted to the GD & T.O.P combination

THE BADDEST FEMALE - CL:

 It took me a while to understand that this isn’t a solo version of „I’m the best“

It’s the queen saying she’s a bad bitch so you know it’s a banger

As almost all CL songs this is good to let off steam and regain your badass level after someone pissed you off

The MV is a sexual awakening on it’s own and performances of that song are also definitely worth a watch

Burning Up (Fire) - BTS:

 So I don’t really listen a lot to it but I still like it

Has all kinds of badass vibes and I like the soft breaks in-between

RM’s part is by far my favourite his deep voice is so satisfying

The MV is also really cool

You can see from previous songs I had a badass song phase (I still have this phase, I love badass songs) where I only took badass kpop songs seriously

Growl - EXO: 

Okay, so I sometimes forget about this song haha

A good song that screams SM to be honest which I always thought was not that much the case with other EXO songs

The dance to this is really satisfying to watch and was probably the reason I bought this song

It shows EXO’s excellent vocals, has a nice feel and is easy to listen to 

Quite an early song too

I love that you could potentially dance really hard to this but still is very soft

Instantly recognisable and also a kpop classic I would say

GOOD BOY - GD & Taeyang: 

 Is this a kink? This is a kink right?

An awesome song i have bopped to a million times

I really love the „pretty/good boy“ trope and who is better for that then our bad boys™️ GD and Taeyang?

Their voices sound a bit alike and I sometimes had trouble differencing them….whoops

The dance is so so good and the MV is such an accurate representation of these two freaks

God I just love them and miss them so much

Welcome to another round of Aki isn’t capable of differencing Japanese and Korean lol

I must say I prefer this version though, I recently bought the korean version and it’s just not the same I got so used to the english parts lol 

This is also a classic, bow to the queens of badass girl group songs!

The MV made me fall in love with CL and the gang

 Why of course after discovering 2ne1 BP wasn’t far behind

Recently showed this MV to a non kpop friend of mine and she drooled over all of them soooo, you can do that

Loved this song the second it started and love dancing violently to it

I now, btw, also own the whole album but it took me a bit to get into them (I was in girl group denial, don’t be like me show them girls some love!)

OPPA!

Being only four really makes it possible for all of them to shine, the vocals are clean and pretty but raspy enough to fit the concept and Jennie and Lisas raps are perfect as always

The beat is easy as is the whole song, doesn’t get annoying and is just a bop.  

Fantastic Baby - BIGBANG:

Nananananananana wow, fantastic baby!

Well well well if it isn’t history right there

Watch the MV, listen to the song! It’s mandatory to know this I’m sorry I don’t make the rules

Danceable, walkable just all in all go crazy(-able)

Boomshakalaka! 

A bit poppy so maybe not for everyone as it sounds a lot like stuff that is randomly on the radio

A dance song that probably was never intended to be more than that. Typically YG, a bit flatter than Bang Bang Bang

I’m repeating myself but you know I heard it’s also something non kpop people enjoy (Basically show them all of BIGBANG, lol)

Ice cream cake - Red Velvet:

Oh boy! My first Red Velvet song that I have because the refrain was stuck in my head and I wanted to know what it was

There’s way more RV later on but for now I think it was the only song

As I said I was in denial of girl groups that didn’t have a badass concept which was soooo dumb!

I love the song, it’s cute and easy to listen to

I love RV’s kinda cute-creepy concept and with the music box in the background it feeds into my liking very easily

I have moved on from it though after discovering other songs from them so I don’t listen to it as often

Sherlock (Clue + Note) - SHINee:

I have known this song for years! Back when my best friend was into kpop and told me all about SHINee I looked into it, Youtube gave me this song and I instantly clicked. Didn’t like it clicked away and didn’t touch it for 5 years

Well now I love it and can’t stop dancing when it’s on

The MV is confusing but god they’re all so cute in it! Taemin looks so adorable with long hair!

I have watched the dance practice about 100x times and you should too! (jk)

And as much as I love SHINee’s vocal squad and they’re great in this, Key and Minho really do it for me in this song

The song lives from the dance and the performance and makes it 10x better

It’s also good for just listening though but not really calm and casual so be prepared to break out into sudden song

I really like this song though, especially the refrain it’s so much fun

Coincidently the first kpop MV I watched after deciding to dive deeper down the rabbit hole and well would you know it…now we’re here

This song and dance is Legendary!

Also a fun song that isn’t to be taken too seriously

Amber…oh Amber. I love her really a whole lot and as I saw the MV I just had to have this song!

It’s a super fun and dancey song with (as the title suggests) a brassy sound

Much like Woof Woof I really enjoy this song bc of the MV, 

Amber is rapping and being the goofball she is ;)

BUT! As much as I like that song and think she deserves all the solo stuff she can get I like her new stuff more because it’s more „hers“. I really enjoy her singing as well.

And confession of the month: I don’t like f(x)’s sound so I’m happy she does solo stuff

She’s such an inspiration with her unique style and attitude (sighs in very gay)

 Lucifer - SHINee:

 I LOVE this song! OMG!

The MV is kinda uneventful but the DANCE PRACTICE!

Oh boy! Well first off Lee Taemin is very distracting in it but you have to see the dance to believe it! That’s what they perform with! On a regular basis!

The sound is very electric and theres a quiet electric melody running through the whole of it that kinda sounds like some alarm clocks lol

You should absolutely watch performances! Jonghyuns high note is not portrayed well in the recorded version, boy has breath forever!

Apart from the vocals slaying absolutely every note the rap parts can’t be discarded by any means

It all just fits so perfectly

Oh and of course for a song of it’s time it’s just a little bit...nonsensical (especially the english parts lol: Loverholic, robotronic. what?)

Hero - MONSTA X:

 I’m thinking of a helicopter landing platform, pulled up shirts and a scared Wonho 

The dance to this song is…well do yourself a favour if you like abs and boys

Apart from the drool worthy performance, the song is super cool! Kinda chill, but still powerful and damn rapline went off!

This song really made them known more and it’s for a good reason

The sound in this is what is „typically“ MX for long time (Till up until Jealousy I’d say)

Sometimes a bit repetitive but what song isn’t lol?

Also still is in the „we all dress awful and don’t know what to do with our hands“ phase but that passes soon

Lead to many wonderful reality shows that makes it easy for new fans to get to know them better (Their group dynamic never changes they all just mature a bit it’s really nice to see.)

Also yes, Jooheon is kinda scary in this but I swear he a cutie

10 SHINee Years

Happy 10th Anniversary, SHINee! I already wrote this on Amino, but I thought I’d bring it over to tumblr (where I can format it properly lol

10 SHINee Years

I can’t believe it’s been 10 whole years. I found SHINee probably just after their first year, in 2009 when Lucifer was gaining traction online. They were the first K-pop band I ever heard, and the only one I’ve ever loved. I haven’t found another band I’ve ever followed so passionately, and I don’t think I ever will. They’re so unique.

When I first heard Lucifer I was hooked on the spot. My friend was showing me the video and I could not believe how good the music was, and I was entranced by the flawless dance moves and a music video I wanted to repeat. I’ve heard the song a million times but I never get sick of it. Even listening right now. It reminds me of great times in middle school, where my friends and I tried to learn the dance. Though I still don’t know much anymore, I never gave up on learning it. Though we’re not all friends anymore, I see the memories of our happiness in each song you all sing.

Honestly I didn’t get super into SHINee until college when I became very depressed and found myself running across silly SHINee compilations on YouTube. They cheered me up and made me so happy. I learned all their names and how unique and incredible each one of them is, how important they are to k-pop as a whole and to each other. How pure they are, even when it comes to live shows that are always live (what kind of band so talented is BAD at lipsyncing? One with pure talent that doesn’t take shortcuts!). Honestly, I’m still learning how to be a Shawol every day. Even today, I never knew the exact day they debuted (and the day after my birthday no less, whoa!) ;;;

ONEW

The sweet leader, Onew. Onew’s gone through a lot and stayed so strong the whole time. He puts all his love into SHINee and it shows. When he needed surgery for his voice and cried when he could finally return to stage, when he comforted every other emotional member on stage, when he might be stressed but always would give that big smile. How can someone be so cool, sexy, and adorable at the same time? You never fail to keep your fans on their feet. Many would be lucky to have such a kind yet strong leader.

KEY

My personal bias, Key. Key was actually the character who’s part I was assigned to dance to back in the old days. It must’ve been fate because when I got older and learned more about him, I realized how much I admired him. I’m someone with a god-awful memory and not a skilled dancer, so I’m in awe by Key’s incredible ability to memorize dances on the spot and expertly execute them. His ability inspires me to work harder at that alone, but that’s not all! A great singer and fashionista to the max, is there anything you’re bad at? All the while, learning to speak in Korean, Japanese, and English. This inspires me so much, as someone who’s been learning Japanese and hopes to teach Japanese abroad. You must have worked so hard to learn so much, and no doubt to help your fellow members reach their highest potential. And as a singer, student, and fan, you’re one of my biggest inspirations.

TAEMIN

Taemin I’ll admit is a bit of a mystery to me sometimes. I feel like there’s a lot of times you never know what he’s thinking behind that ever-present smile. A little bit of mischief and playfulness, but also clearly someone who, when they want to achieve a goal, will make it happen. Like many others, I watched you grow. My first memories are of a scrawny little Taemini with the long blond hair, so seeing beefy TaeMAN years later was a (welcome) shock. Now you’re making your own albums and clearly pursuing something you’ve always wanted to do. Though the smallest, Taemin’s definitely been a core part of SHINee, and has clearly grown well with love aside his brothers.

MINHO

Though Minho has a huge personality, he was someone I didn’t know much about for a long time. He’s fiery, competitive, playful, determined, and dorkly cool (riddle me that one). Clearly one of SHINee’s biggest fans who will prove them to be the best in any competition, no matter how small, and make up DIBIDIBIDI songs about his favorite people. And no different from the other members, just as talented as a budding drama actor and the group rapper. Though known as the group rapper, it’s no shock he’s just as talented in song. One of my favorite songs he’s sung is Kiseki, a Japanese song I heard before hearing him sing it, but only loved after. No matter what, Minho’s love for SHINee will never fade. There’s no extinguishing that flaming charisma.

JONGHYUN

And finally, Jonghyun. Forever in our hearts and our minds. The lead vocalist, and that is no title given lightly. Those notes in Lucifer, the long high notes, always gave me chills. It was your voice I wanted to hear the most in each song replay. What an incredible talent. The lyrics of each song he wrote packed with emotion and meaning. Every song has a purpose. You could say so much and so little in each line. You have the brightest smile of all of the members, and every time I’d watch a behind-the-scenes video, I’d always be instantly happy when I saw you break out in a huge smile and fits of laughter. Jonghyun worked so hard and did so many incredible things with his talents and immense effort. You did so, so, so well.

Jonghyun, last July I planned a trip to Japan. The winter before, I found “SHINee’s Fine Day”, a show where all of the boys took trips to wherever they wanted. I never finished the series, but when my friends and I decided to visit Japan, I remembered that you also loved Japan and chose to visit it. I began to slowly watch your videos the next months for inspiration. In December, inspiration turned to dedication. In March, I walked purposefully in some of your footsteps in Tokyo. I couldn’t do everything, but I chose 3 specific places that I bought meant a lot to you back them.

I decided to visit the records store you did, Tower Records jn Shibuya, and buy your last album, along with some from SHINee. When I arrived, the store looked different than when you visited, but just like you, I believe to the SHINee section. They had a beautiful set up dedicated to all 5 of you. I took a picture so someday, when I’ve learned enough Japanese, I can read their kind words. I easily found your city, put in a large section for your fans. When I purchased your CD, they gave me a poster of the cover. I still haven’t had the heart to open my CDs or hang up your poster. Someday I will though.

On my way to Tower Records, I had visited Hachiko. All the while I remembered when you took a picture with him too, and fans started to gather in take pictures, which you happily and loudly invited to continue. (Funny enough people took pics of me then too in my fairy kei fashion haha)

In Odaiba, the Gundam statue. I’m not a Gundam fan like you are but I wanted to copy you by taking a selfie in front of the statue (albeit I wasn’t meaning to go in cosplay but that’s how things wound up haha;;; ). I’m glad I could go where you once were. It helped comfort me a lot knowing you once experienced a lot of happiness and fun, enjoying your vacation where i was. And knowing you must be feeling that happiness once again. You deserve all of the happiness in the world.

Jonghyun, I’ll try to keep it short. You changed me as a person. I now stand up for what I believe in. I try to not let others push me around. I know you stood up for what you believed in and it inspired me so much. But you’ve been inspiring everyone around you since the beginning. They all said so; fans, other musical groups, your friends, and your fellow members. You’re an idol in every sense of the word. You’re a star.

SHINee

What SHINee has taught me most of all is something I’ve been trying to prove my whole life: true friendship exists. I hoped it existed with the friends I had back when I discovered SHINee in middle school. There were also 5 of us. But our five wasn’t meant to be, of course, we went different ways. I’ve made more friends and lost them between then and now. My depression worsened because I believed I’d never find friends that would want to be with me, want to work towards the same goals, or help me through hard times. I just had friends that abandoned me, gave up on our projects we started with so much promise, and brushed off my feelings. When I found the videos of SHINee, it broke through this despair I’d built up overtime. I saw them laugh, cry, smile, argue, and work so hard together and knew there were no truer friends in the world. Someday I want the friendship they have. I’m not there yet but I know now that it’s out there. That’s what made me fall in love with SHINee more than any other band ever will. They’re not just the pretty boys with nice voices and incredible dance moves. Their distinct, incredible people who care about each other so much, and put their all into their group. Though they may have different goals and dreams ultimately, and different side talents and projects, it’s clear their #1 focus is SHINee, and the Shawol that give their love to them. They love us because we love this group that they put their hearts and souls into. There’s no way to deny how much they love us. In return, let’s all do our best to be as amazing as they always believe we are.

- This feels similar to the attending each other’s events one I’ve done, so I guess this could be part three of a seemingly on-going series~ 😅 (Part one, Part two)

Onew: 

When you found out that your boyfriend had a concert scheduled on his birthday, you instantly started making plans on how to surprise him. Normally, you would attend as one in the crowd but this time you yearned to do something more special and ultimately decided to turn to his manager and fellow members for help. 

The final idea was for you to bring a cake onto the stage during the ending segment along with the backup dancers, which would of course be a shock to your sweet and amazing boyfriend. 

When he spotted you he would stiffen at first and stare in confusion before he lit up with a bright and joyful smile. Then, instead of saying anything, he simply engulfed you in a hug and forgot about the surroundings for a brief moment.

“Happy birthday~” You sang in his ear as you hugged him back tightly. 

When you pulled apart you then brought him over to the cake for him to blow out the candles and make a wish, which he did in an excited manner. 

Jonghyun: 

Since you and Jonghyun often showed up at each other’s event to support one another you had both evolved to become more sneaky over time in order to actually surprise the other. 

Prior to one of his upcoming concerts you continuously lied about not attending but of course he didn’t believe you. Instead, he just stared at you with a knowing look and crossed arms, seemingly amused at your weak attempts at fooling him. 

It made you roll your eyes, though it didn’t really matter if he knew you were attending since he wouldn’t know what you were actually planning. 

On the day of the concert everything went as planned, until you sneaked on stage. The idea was for you to blend in with the dancers but your shorter frame instantly made you stand out and it didn’t take more than a few seconds for your perceptive boyfriend to spot you and of course he wouldn’t hold back on pointing it out. 

“Oh, y/n is here right now.” He said into the microphone, laughing when you desperately tried to hide behind someone else. “It’s too late to hide. I already caught you.” 

While he looked very pleased you couldn’t help but sulk. Though, in the end you walked into his open arms and hugged him nonetheless. 

Key: 

Surprising your outstanding boyfriend was actually something you had been preparing for a while and the perfect opportunity arose when he was going to hold a showcase in light of his new solo comeback. 

Lately you were also busy with promotions so it wasn’t hard to make him believe that you couldn’t attend due to another schedule, which of course wasn’t the case. 

On the day of the event you arrived secretly and waited backstage for the segment when you prepared to surprise him. The host and his back-up dancers knew about it and shielded you as you came onto the stage. 

“For the showcase today, we actually prepared a surprise for you.” The host said which instantly made Key curious and also puzzled, since it wasn’t something he was told beforehand.

When he spotted you he would definitely be very surprised and make some smug or playful remarks about the fact that you had tricked him. However, behind all of that you could see that he was really touched and happy, which would also be evident when he didn’t hesitate to hug you very tightly.

Minho: 

After a long time apart due to your boyfriend being on tour, you came up with an idea to surprise him during a rehearsal for their concert. Since it was held abroad, he would have no clue that you were going to be there, which definitely worked in your favor. 

On one of the different segments, where their back-up dancers also came onto the stage, you came along as one in the crowd, melting in enough for him not to notice you straight off the bat. 

It made you smile as you could skip over and give him a small back hug after the segment was finished, making his already large eyes widen in surprise. 

Since it was abroad, he would never have imagined that you would be there, which made him feel touched and extremely happy. 

“y/n? You really came all the way here?” 

His bewildered expression would make you chuckle as you hugged him properly and told him ‘of course I did’ with a bright smile. 

Taemin: 

Whenever Taemin held a concert with his fellow members or by himself you would usually attend  to support him. It definitely wasn’t anything new. 

However, you would usually watch from a spot in the audience or backstage. So, when you one time planned a little surprise, which included coming on stage, it would make you a bit nervous but also excited. 

Since you were a skilled dancer, you could easily blend in with the other back-up dancers and join them for a full performance of one of your boyfriend’s songs, all without him noticing you. He would only first do so once the song finished and the fans were shouting something inaudible to try and point you out. 

It would take him some time to understand what they meant but when he did he looked around and quickly spotted you. 

“Oh? What is this?” His voice was a mix of confusion and happiness, which made you smile since it was seriously adorable. 

You did a ‘surprise’ gesture and then chuckled at his shocked expression before hugging him.

I never thought that we would be beginning 2018 without you and that this would be the first thing I write about Kpop in the new year. I can still hardly believe you are gone. I don't want to believe it, in fact.

I still can't stand to use past tense, so I won't. You will never be fully gone from this world- your voice and influence will remain for years to come. Therefore, I will keep using present tense because you are just as alive and loved and cherished by Shawol now as you were 1 month ago!

You are an inspiration to so many. You are a blessing to so many. Your music is art and your voice that of an angel. You reach out to so many people who are hurting and comfort them with your lyrics and music and words. Your honesty compels us and touches us because we realize we aren't alone. Your struggles are our struggles, your thoughts are our thoughts.

Your smile is breathtaking. It has always been a joy to watch you on stage. Your smile has always lit up the room, lit up the stage, and melted the hearts of every fan and non-fan alike. You are beautiful!

I love to see you and the other members. Despite saying some things were business, we could always tell you guys are real brothers. Your adoration of Taemin, your friendship with Key, your adorable Tom & Jerry moments with Minho, and your harmonization with Onew. Was there ever such a perfect blend of artistry, friendship, love, and music?

I'm so sorry that you were hurting so badly. I'm sorry that we as fans and humans didn't see the true urgency. I'm so sorry we couldn't combat the anti-fans as much. I'm so sorry we only saw your smiles and disregarded the red flags. I'm so sorry you didn't feel the full force of our love. I'm so sorry you didn't think you could truly be yourself. We loved you so much, we still love you, and we will always love you. I'm sorry we couldn't show you that enough.

I would give anything in this world to have you back one more day- to tell you how you inspired so many, how you saved so many, how you touched so many. I would tell you that nothing at all was worth the value of your life. That you had so much to live for, people who still need you, people who still loved and adored you. I would tell you that it might not get better but that you were strong enough to get through it. I would tell you that you weren't alone and that so many of us have been in that same situation and made it through, so that you could too. I would ask you to keep on going, keep on fighting. Because even though it's tough and it hurts, the world still needed the bright, shining light of Kim Jonghyun.

I hope you have found peace. I hope you are at rest. I hope that all the sorrows and darkness of life and depression and battles have faded away and you are wrapped in eternal light, peace, life, and joy.

Our sweet, sweet Jonghyun... you did well. You always did well. And you will continue to do well as you live on in spirit and continue to touch people with your life and music and memories.
