DEATH MASK OF ELISABETH OF AUSTRIA
Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi or Sissi, was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898.
While travelling in Geneva in 1898, Elisabeth was fatally stabbed in the heart by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni. Her tenure of 44 years was the longest of any Austrian empress.

It was a Sunday on which the “Sunday’s child” entered her new home in the Hofburg. She made an exquisite picture as she stepped from the state coach, her cheeks flushed with excitement, wearing a rose-pink satin dress shot with silver and adorned with wreaths of roses. As she descended the high steps her diamond tiara caught for a moment in the top of the doorframe, but with a gesture of indescribable grace she rearranged her hair, and for that day at least her work was at an end.

We can see in the slides some illustrations during their visit, in the 3rd slide the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria talking to the Russian Empress and next to her, Elizabeth the Empress of Austria nicknamed Sisi and Emperor Nicholas II,and the 4rth slide we can see a zoom in of that illustration showing the two Empresses who were considered to be the most beautiful at their times. Actually, Empress Alexandra saw Sisi 9 years ago when she was Princess Alix of Hesse, she was so impressed by her charm character and beauty. “On Saturday we saw the Empress of Austria, and I was perfectly enchanted with her. She has a most lovely, tall & thin figure (50 years old) and such a pretty face & soft voice.” wrote to her brother Prince Ernest of Hesse, 3 August 1887. “How funny it is to hear German spoken everywhere after 2 years in Russia. [...] Nicky drove with the Emperor [of Austria] & I followed with the Empress - I must say I am shy with all these masses of strange faces again. The Empress I had already seen twice before - she enquired after you. - Stephanie [the Dowager Crown Princess of Austria] was directly charming - she must be coming now in a minute - as she wanted to see me a little quietly. [...] At 5 there is an immense Dinner & Cercle (oh dear) & parade, then Pürschen for Nicky. At 4 family dinner at Leinz, then drive & later a Concert here in the Burg. It is such a pitty [sic] that as soon as the Empress does not appear Stephanie neither does, as she would have been such a great help to me.” wrote to her brother Ernest the Duke of Hesse 15/27th of August 1896 #empressalexandrafeodorovna #empresselisabethofaustria #empresssissi #alexandrafeodorovna #royalwomen #elisabethofaustria #history #royals #nicholasii #franzjosef #romanovs #theromanovs #romanovdynasty #romanova_team #otma #sissiofaustria #alixofhesse #sisi #empresselisabeth #romyschneider https://www.instagram.com/p/CbYFvCosMJN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Curiosity: Ludwig did not like to spend time with the army, but from time in time,as a sovereign,he had to. Sisi once spotted him marching with soldiers with miserable face, military outfit and...an umbrella! She burst out laughing to the vision. Ludwig scowled to her. "I do not want rain to ruin my curls!" He exclaimed. #ludwigiiofbavaria #ludwigii #sisiofbavaria #sisiofaustria #elisabethofaustria #DandyRoyalsClub #sisi https://www.instagram.com/p/CXCGumWsXT2/?utm_medium=tumblr

Posted @withregram • @period.dramas.daily "Sisi was an idol, a pop star and a style icon at a time when these words didn't even exist."💫 says director Schwarzenberger. "She did things her way and refused to be reined in by conventions. With her rebellious insistence on standing up for her convictions, Sisi can be seen as a role model today as well. What particularly interested me here is the challenge to bring to life a Sisi in tune with our time, and to show all of Sisi's different facets." This dress and jacket is inspired by an 1853 engraving of Elisabeth of Bavaria (soon to be the famous Empress Sissi) by Eduar Kaiser. A lot of reproductions of the engraving are low quality and it can be hard to notice all the delicate lace details on the tiered skirt. I also love the massive straw hat with the decorative ribbon ties.⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ ⠀ #fashiondrawing #historicalclothing #periodclothing #historicalfashion #art #digitalart #dresshistory #costumedesign #clothingdesign #vintage #vintagefashion #style #fashion #historicalfashiondrawing #historicalfashiondesign #sissi #elisabethofaustria #1850s #1853 #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion #nineteenthcenturyfashion #nineteenthcentury #Victorian #hoopskirt #petticoats #crinoline #bellskirt #antebellumfashion #victorianfashion https://www.instagram.com/p/B-MjJ2VgrOV/?igshid=aot63r3l12bq

ELISABETH OF AUSTRIA
ELISABETH OF AUSTRIA “Sissi”
Empress who was murdered
1837-1898
Empress of Austria was born into the royal Bavarian house of Wittelsbach. She married Emperor Franz Joseph I when she was 16. At the end of her life, her relationship with her husband was one of friendship rather than romantic. She had never been comfortable in courtly life and was known for her charity work.
Her only son and heir Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, aged 30, committed suicide with his mistress Mary Vetsera in his hunting lodge at Mayerling in 1880. His death resulted in Elisabeth withdrawing from her courtly duties. During this time she lost her son, her father, her sister and her mother. She spent the rest of her life wearing black.
In 1890, she had a palace named the ‘Achilleion’ at Corfu, Greek Islands which she would visit. Elisabeth was obsessed with maintaining her youth, her looks and beauty.
On 10 September 1898, whilst travelling in Geneva, Switzerland, Elisabeth, aged 61, was stabbed to death by an Italian man, Luigi Lucheni, 25. She was travelling incognito with her lady-in-waiting, Countess Irma Sztaray. After lunch they left the hotel to the shore of Lake Geneva to catch the steamship to go to Montreux. They were walking when Luchini approached them and attempted to look underneath the empress’s shade umbrella. The ship rang its bell to let passengers know it was ready to depart. Luchini made a stumble movement, and stabbed Elisabeth with a sharp needle file. She collapsed and onlookers rushed over to help her, Elisabeth told them ‘it’s nothing’ as she was not aware that she had been stabbed. One man helped her back on her feet and the two women boarded the boat. Elisabeth lost consciousness and collapsed, there were no doctors on-board and only a nurse could be located. Three men laid her on a bench and cut her corset which relieved her somewhat, she was asked if she was in pain and she replied, ‘no’ and asked ‘what has happened?’ and lost consciousness once again. The men noticed a brain stain above her left breast (where she was stabbed), she was then taken to a nearby hotel and by the time she was placed onto the bed, she was already dead.
Luchini had fled but was soon caught. He said he had wanted to kill the Duke of Orleans, but was unable to get access to him, he decided to kill Elisabeth instead. She was a random target, as he just wanted to kill somebody who was a sovereign and didn’t care which one it was. “It was not a woman I struck, but an Empress; it was a crown that I had in view.” He was declared as sane, and was imprisoned for life. In prison he attempted suicide with a sharp key from a tin of sardines in 1900, it failed. His second suicide attempt was more successful, 10-years later he hanged himself with his belt in 1910, after a guard destroyed his unfinished memoir which he had been writing.

Early on the morning of October 13 the Emperor arrived in Corfu, to find his wife in far better health. He explained all his troubles, begged her to be reasonable, and promised to take her part more actively than he had done before in the matter of the children, and, if necessary, to oppose his mother. Elizabeth longed for her little ones. She wrote constantly to Gisela and Rudolf, and her letters always ended with some such expression as : “Do not forget your Mamma” or “Think of your Mamma often.”

Curiosity: To Franz's letter about what Sisi would like for her birthday, she replied: "I would either like a mental hospital, a tiger or a medallion. You choose." Franz would choose a medallion, and Sisi commented his choice:"I really like the medallion, although I think you chose it because you didn't really think to what was truly better." #sisiofbavaria #sisiofaustria #elisabethofaustria #sisi #emperorfranzjoseph #DandyRoyalsClub https://www.instagram.com/p/CYjBoiesPjD/?utm_medium=tumblr

Benvenuti, questo è il primo post!
Buongiorno a tutti!
On verra! :)
