Swords and Sorcery [Thematic Thursday 03.15]
It’s Thematic Thursday over on /trash/! It’s a perfect excuse to do what I did when the sci-fi prompt came up and submit the first chapter of a WIP.
The difference, I hope*, is that this time I’ll be able to post more of it more quickly. I’m 25k-ish words in, and much closer to finishing. As usual, once it’s ready to go I’ll start installments over on AO3, which is much better suited to walls of text.
Until then, please enjoy this preview.
Nicholas Wilde pulled his cloak tighter around his shoulders and waited in the shadow of the well. He wished his charges for the evening would step as lively as he did. The longer they were out here, the higher the chances that Sentinels would be along to challenge them.
He supposed that was what he got for working with tourists.
The two beavers eventually trundled up across the square behind him. They were huddled close together against the bite of the wind, heads bowed to watch their feet in the drifting snow. The male carried a bulging traveler's sack.
"How much further, Mr..."
"West." Nick pointed toward the bluff that rose at the edge of village. "And not far now. Your accommodations are just down there, by the stream."
"You told us at the inn that your rooms were the best the village had to offer." The man's companion hadn't stopped complaining this whole time. "But we're almost at the wall. Isn't that dangerous? They say the magic-"
"The Ford hasn't seen trouble for years," Nick cut her off. He kept his easy smile in place. "From bandits or otherwise. The Council Watch is too thorough for that."
She looked dubious.
"The stream and the square are just steps away. There's fresh water, and a baker down the road, and you'll get first light when the sun rises tomorrow."
They weren't buying it. Nick pushed the wide door open and now even the husband's face started to twitch with disgust. He narrowed his beady eyes at Nick.
"This is a barn."
Nick ignored the scent of the mostly-fresh hay he'd stocked the place with. It was a barn, at least during the warm season. But Nick knew the owner packed up and left for the shores to the south this time of year, and left the building empty.
And it was odd that two beavers would complain about it. Didn't they live in dams? A barn was a far sight better than earthwork and raw timber already.
They were the ones with the gold, though, and who was he to judge by appearances? They certainly didn't take his cloak for anything more than that of a part-time innkeep.
"And this is, for better or for worse, the best Morrigan's Ford has to offer right now." He grimaced in affected sympathy. "There's just the one inn, and it's full up - which is the whole reason we had to expand to alternate rooms. I know it's not much, but it will be warm and dry." He paused while a gust pushed flurries of snow past them. The woman shivered. "And it will be out of the cold. I'll see about more fuel for the brazier, so you can run it all night."
The chill wind seemed to help the beavers come to a decision. They shared a glance and the husband finally nodded.
"I suppose it's the best we'll hope for on short notice," he said. "It's all right, Meera. Look, there's the heater. We can make a nice supper."
With their minds finally made up, they passed over the gold. Nick took it carefully, without making a show of it. It had been a long time since he'd had two whole pieces to rub together, but they didn't need to know that.
"There's a door for small mammals there in the wall." He pointed. "And a trough on the far side. Make yourselves comfortable. I'll be back with more fuel soon."
He was telling the truth, but he had another stop to make first.
The Burrow End Inn was a whole different kind of warm. There was smoke on the air and great roaring fires, not like the little braziers Nicholas' charges would huddle around tonight. Chatter from dozens of mammals washed over him as he pushed through the doors and the crowd. He could smell roasting meat and garlic.
Jalis, the innkeep, was a broad-shouldered ox who was at once kindly and a completely ruthless businessmammal, depending on who asked. Nobody gave him a second look, even when he paused at the end of the bar to bend and confer with a fox in a dark cloak.
Nicholas gave him his cut in the scam - twenty silver for the lost business from turning away the beavers, and twenty silver for the room Nicholas had reserved himself, for the next few nights. In weather like this, he would treat himself with a proper hearth and feather bed.
"Any sign of the watch?" he asked.
Jallis just raised an eyebrow.
Nicholas sighed and flicked another silver back the innkeep's way with a thumb. Jallis caught it out of the air.
"Not a peep, on a night like this," he said, and winked. The coin disappeared. "Last anyone here talked of them, they were to the east, securing the supply roads."
"Still?" Nicholas shrugged and tapped his forehead in salute. "West it is, then. Don't wait up for me."
---
He moved from shadow to shadow with practiced ease, not that it was all that necessary in the midnight cold. The roads were deserted, especially so down here where the river curved its way south again. The old dock and its storehouses where the harbormaster collected coal and pitch might have looked abandoned, if one didn't know better.
Yet Nicholas still paused to concentrate from time to time, to blur his silhouette and shroud his form, so anyone watching the widest roads through the moonlight might mistake his passage for the wind stirring in the trees, or a gust of glittering snow. It was just safer that way.
Nicholas knew all about safe. It was the only way to go through life these days, when news shot through the village every week of new decrees and new guilds and new armies massing out in the wilderness. No, that old beaver was right. Magic was stirring - not just in the old places, but in lands that hadn't felt the wild energy in so long that the knowledge of what it could do had become legend.
It made him uneasy. Willow Vale, beyond the hills, already crawled with a strange static. it was like something he could almost smell, almost hear. He steered clear now, even if it meant a hit to his meager business. If it got any worse, he would have to think about leaving entirely. He didn't want to get tangled up in it when the rest of the village finally caught on.
Most other mammals were rightly scared of it, too - the Council Watch rushed around to follow up on even the most tenuous or rumors, and wealthy mammals hired militias on top of that to protect their lands and from the opportunists and bandits that exploited the chaos. The most foolish of mammals wanted a piece of the magic itself, never mind that the energy tended to overwhelm its vessels or rot them from within.
It was all anyone ever talked about now - and so Nick didn't feel guilty at all about looking out for himself at the expense of others. If they were too busy worrying about magic, or more bandit attacks, to ask more careful questions about who they were buying a room from, that was hardly his problem. It wasn't like anyone was getting hurt.
Of course, not everyone saw it so cleanly. They kept reminding him of it, too.
Nick stopped in the dark shadow where the wood of the coal hoppers was cracked and warped enough that small pieces occasionally fell through. This, too, was nothing anyone would miss.
But the ground was mostly clear, all the way up to the edge of the shed. Nick came around the divider, his attention on the snow in front of him, and stopped.
A rabbit stood at the top of the mound of coal. She wore a suit of dull metal armor, which was so large on her frame it might have been comical, had she not also carried a serious polearm sharpened to a razor edge. Even planted in the loose material under her feet, it was longer than she was tall.
Nicholas swallowed the wariness and smiled. He should have known she wouldn't be far behind him.
"Cold night to be lurking around here," he said.
"Not cold enough, it seems." She shifted her feet - grey fur now smudged black from where she'd walked in the coal - and slid down the pile so she could scowl at him at his eye level. "Nicholas Wilde. What brings you to the docks?"
He kept his paws where she would be able to see them. "A mammalitarian gesture, nothing more. My clients need to keep warm tonight."
"Yes, I saw you leading those travelers across the square." Her eyes narrowed. "What did you dupe them into this time? A sty? The compost shack?"
"You wound me, Hopps."
She drew herself up, which wasn't saying much, considering her stature, and tapped a paw to the cobalt trim on her pauldrons. "That's Sentinel Hopps to you."
"Spend a week out in Willow Vale and everything changes. Judith Hopps, a full Sentinel now..."
Her breath clouded in a sigh. "You know the drill, Wilde. Stand on the path, and put those knives of yours at your feet."
It wasn't worth forcing the issue here in the cold. For all his tone, Nicholas had no interest in actually crossing blades with even the most diminutive of the Council Watch. He had no doubt she was stronger and smarter than she appeared - still probably not enough to prevail in a fight, but why risk a fight in the first place? And she would know if he tried to hide his intentions from her, to get the upper paw. That was the opposite of safe.
So he drew his daggers from his cloak - slowly - and laid them in the frozen grass at the edge of the road.
"The mammals you swindle might not know or care that you're not really an innkeep," Judith said. "But you can't steal coal to keep them warm. Not when there's wood for the gathering." Her foot tapped. "All of them, Nicholas."
Now Nicholas did grimace, and reached behind him to pull a third slender knife from the back of his belt. "Technically, the path on this side of the building is public lands. That the dockmaster can't be bothered to maintain his storehouses isn't my-"
"Enough." The edge of her glaive caught the moonlight. "Are we going to have a problem, Nicholas?"
"Well, you've done your best to ensure problems are impossible."
Her eyes flashed. "If only you were as considerate."
Nicholas smiled again. This was nothing he hadn't heard before. He was a troublemaker. Shifty. Sly. It came with the red tail, and the fangs and the wandering paws. He let it roll off while she paced around him and looked him up and down, as if deciding whether to make it official.
And eventually Judith's frown softened. "I know there are mammals that need to stay warm, Nicholas. You should know that's the only good reason I have not to arrest you again."
"Indeed." His strongest memory of that night in the Watchhouse was the snickering from the other Sentinels, when they'd seen Judith had bothered hauling his harmless tail in at all. To this day, he still didn't know if she'd ignored it, or if she just hadn't caught it. "It's certainly not because you have nothing better to do."
"Stick to wood, and we won't have to keep doing this."
"You don't enjoy our chats?" He bent to retrieve his tools and spirited them away under his cloak again. "You'd rather be off chasing wilds magic?"
"I would rather be with the Captain, patrolling the roads for bandits." She corrected him and hopped off the coal to stand on the road. Her ears were up again and she was watching him closely in the moonlight. "But someone has to keep an ear on the village, if only for the hapless travelers who don't know any better."
She'd drawn night watch in midwinter, in other words. Someone at the Watchhouse really didn't like her, it seemed. This time he hid the smile.
"Far be it from me to impede you any further, then," Nicholas said. He touched his brow.
"Wood, Nicholas." She angled her glaive. "And stay out of trouble."
"Oh, certainly." And for once, he meant it. As soon as he was done disappointing the beavers he'd put up in the barn with the few pieces of coal he'd already collected, Nicholas intended to splurge on a nice hot meal and sleep until noon.
He turned to leave her standing in the cold wind, and didn't bother sneaking. She would see right through it.
---
Judith was freezing, but she knew that adding another tunic under her mail would just make the whole lot heavier, and she wouldn't even have the energy to shiver.
Not that she would have noticed just now. Her indignation over the village's most persistent fox was helping keep her warm on her rounds.
He didn't respect Sentinel armor at all, and it never seemed to matter. Wilde didn't think of her as a keeper of the peace, much less any kind of threat at all. And none of the other Sentinels ever bothered putting him in his place. Maybe they knew it was a lost cause.
Or maybe, Judith had to confront when she made it to the base of the wall, Wilde was just more right than she wanted to admit. Nothing ever happened in this village. It was, as some of the longer-tenured Sentinels grumbled, where peacekeeping went to waste its time, even as the world outside its walls got more and more uneasy.
But Judith was convinced that on its own made it worth struggling up cold stone stairs designed for larger mammals, or letting the westerly wind at the top of the battlement chill her armor out even more. Morrigan's Ford was quiet below her, with only a few lights burning to betray signs of life at all.
She saw that for the bigger picture that Wilde couldn't, or wouldn't. If she and the rest of them didn't do their jobs - even when they were cold and lonely - that sleepy, boring peace could slip away. It had happened already, in the villages and towns furthest from the keeps where the Sentinels were stretched thinnest. The story was different each time - storms, or sickness, or bandits, yes - but the result was the same.
It was surely better that nothing continue to happen under her watch, than to risk something worse.
So Judith continued her pacing, all the way down the length of the western wall. She passed flickering torches and the lone guardhouse, where Hayfew, the oldest goat on the Watch, somehow stayed awake, propped on his pike. He, at least, always spared her a nod as she went by.
And all remained as it should be when she came off the wall. The docks were still quiet, and the roads to the south that went into the fields. There was no sign of Wilde - though she wasn't sure she would know he was there, if he wanted to hide from her.
Judith had even dared to start hoping of a cup of hot soup and a warm billet when the noise came to her over the wind.
She paused in the archway of the western gate, perked her ears up again and listened hard.
It was just the wind. Just the wind, and the flutter and snap of the torch in its bracket-
And the faint rasp of hooves from the other side of the locked gate.
Judith stood rooted where she was, while the training she finally had to use for real seemed to take forever to come to mind in the cold. The window in the gate was too high for her, and there was no stool like the one she kept at the main gate to the north. There were no other sentries to alert - the nearest was Hayfew, back down the wall.
So she snatched the torch from its holder herself and jumped up the stairs again, unsteady with such large tools in each paw.
The wind battered her sensitive ears back when she came to the parapet - and here, too, she was too short to see out properly. She clambered right up onto the ramparts and braced her glaive between them, trusting the stout ash pole to support her weight and her even heavier armor while she leaned out over the dizzying drop.
"Who goes there? Sing out for the Watch!"
Still no answer against the wind - and only barely did Judith see the glint of nighttime eyes looking back up at her. Wide and round. Prey. Someone was out there, all right, and they needed her help. These days especially, travelers who came to harm passing between the villages weren't always lucky enough to make it to the next one.
So back down to the gate she went, to haul on the giant bolt and push it open. But she was not prepared to meet something so beyond even her ability to help. Her words, her carefully prepared speech - they guttered in her throat.
They were both dressed for fair weather in the fields, not a midwinter storm, and they were so exhausted they made no move to stagger forward into shelter.
A deer, Judith finally identified her, swaying on her feet where a badger supported her - and both of them dripping blood in the fresh snow from fur and skin that had been flayed half off their bones.

Parliament returns to work after the Christmas break on Tuesday, and there is a long list of items in the legislature's in-tray. Helsingin Sanomat has a summary (siirryt toiseen palveluun)of the big issues.
The government is planning to present 166 legislative proposals in the spring term and an additional 122 in the autumn. HS suggests that the individual laws will not be a source of huge conflict, but the broad outline of the government's economic policies will prompt some heated debate among MPs.
Government parties have agreed to propose employment measures that will improve government finances by 110 million euros a year, with a deadline of 15 February to come up with a package.
Opposition parties have criticised the government for unwillingness to implement cuts to unemployment benefits to try and push people back to work, but reduced access to early pensions for older job seekers were agreed earlier by the government parties.
Meanwhile climate measures must also be thrashed out, as the government puts flesh on the bones of its target to be carbon neutral by 2035.
That includes measures to reduce emissions from transport and agriculture, which are both contentious issues.
The final theme HS flags up is Covid. Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) said on Monday that she thinks restrictions could be lifted this month, but government parties meet on Wednesday to discuss that further.
Restrictions lifted
Iltalehti has a list (siirryt toiseen palveluun) of the Covid rules that change on Tuesday, the first of February. Restaurants mainly serving food are able to stay open until 9pm, with alcohol sales ending at 5pm and a restriction on numbers at 75 percent of capacity.
Cinemas are able to open again in many regions, as are gyms and swimming pools. The recommendation for higher education institutions to switch to distance learning ends, with institutions to decide on how they proceed.
Border checks on passengers arriving from Schengen countries also came to an end on 31 January, while checks on those arriving from non-Schengen EU countries end on 1 February.
All passengers from outside the EU therefore remain subject to Covid pass checks, and need either evidence of vaccination or recovery from Covid and a negative Covid test result.
The government has also lifted its recommendation that people meet only five people from outside their family at any one time.
Care workers' vaccines
Meanwhile Ilta-Sanomat has a report (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on the introduction of a requirement for those in contact with people at risk of serious complications from Covid to be vaccinated, which comes into force on Tuesday. Finland's various regions are interpreting the rules differently.
In Tampere, nothing will change — unvaccinated nurses can continue to work. But in Turku, a refusal to take the Covid vaccine could lead to a loss of pay.
Tampere will re-evaluate the situation on 14 February. It is utilising a clause in the law that allowed employers to use unvaccinated staff if there are extenuating circumstances, saying that staff absences mean it has little choice.
A local health official tells IS that absences are currently running at three times normal levels.
THL vaccine expert Hanna Nohynek, meanwhile, tells HS (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that she thinks the law is not now justified as a means to protect patients.
While nurses should take the vaccine to protect themselves, according to Nohynek, they don't prevent infection and transmission — so they won't ensure patients are protected from Covid.
Ski lessons online
It's the height of the skiing season in Finland, with cross-country tracks covering most of the country following heavy snowfall at the weekend.
The nature of the sport is that many people have long breaks between chances to ski, due to a lack of snow, equipment or interest.
Vantaan Sanomat, though, has a handy guide (siirryt toiseen palveluun) for those digging their skis out of storage to head out onto the tracks.
The video shows proper technique for those looking to do some Nordic-style cross-country skiing, and the accompanying article includes tips on where to go for decent tracks and even in-person lessons.
Those who perfect their technique could enjoy a session of skiing at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium, which is open to skiers until 27 February (siirryt toiseen palveluun).

2021 Schedule
November 15th: Writer and Artist sign ups begin!
Note: this year, we will be allowing moodboards as pieces of art by creators. We do ask however that if you create a moodboard, you must have either one work that is not a moodboard or three moodboards if those are the only pieces you are creating. Even if you are not creating a moodboard, the minimum requirement for artists is 2 pieces.
Also, the minimum requirement for fics is 10k words. The fic does not have to be complete by posting, but you must have at least 10k written by the posting week. Of course, we encourage having as much completed as possible if you are planning on publishing a longer work.
December 15th: Writer sign ups close!
January 1st: Artist sign ups close!
January 15th-February 1st: Writers' Form
Writers must fill out the form including details about their fics which include: general summary, themes, tropes, universe, side ships, etc. Any writer who does not submit their form by February 1st (unless they have contacted a mod with an extenuating circumstance) will be removed from the event.
February 7th: First Round of Claims
More details will be released in the discord before this happens, but basically, this is when the artists will go through the google doc with all of the fics (which will be anonymous) and choose which fic they'll be creating for. It is first come, first served. You will only select one fic during this round even if you intend on creating for more than one.
February 14th: Second Round of Claims
The same process as the first, except artists who have already signed up for a fic may sign up for a second or even third fic if needed and the artist feels they can manage that amount of work.
February 21st: Claims End
This marks the end of the claiming period. If you're a writer and your fic has not yet been claimed don't worry at all we will work something out and ensure that your fic will have pieces of art to accompany it. Any artist who has not claimed a fic at this time will be removed from the event.
February 28th: Preliminary Check-In
One of the mods will check in with all participants and ensure that writers and artists have been in communication with one another over discord (unless a specific alternative has been decided). If there has not been communication yet, we will ensure that there is by the end of the week.
March 14th: First Formal Check-In
One of the mods will check in with you and your writer/artist over discord (again, unless an alternative has been decided) to make sure you're in proper contact and working on your pieces. From this date on, there will be a check-in once a month to make sure that you and your partner on on track. If you feel you are not on schedule please don't worry. We will work with you to make sure you get back on track and feel comfortable to meet the deadline.
May 23rd-30th: Send in Posting Details
You will send in your posting details to a mod via discord. This will include how much of your pieces or fic you have completed, when you expect to publish the first part/chapter/piece of your work, and when you expect to finish. We know these things are subject to change but please give us a best estimate.
June 1st-8th: Posting of the First Piece/Part/Chapter of Your Work
Because in recent years the deadline has been difficult for some people to meet, and we don't want to discourage participants, we ask that you have at least 10k words written of your fic (the minimum requirement for all fics) or at least one piece of art completed by the 8th. If it is a multichapter work, you don't have to have it completely posted by the 8th, just the first chapter. We will make sure that you're on track to complete the fic at some point during continuous check-ins, but we are understanding and hope this new rule will make participants feel more at ease.
As always, if you have any questions please send them along and we will get to you as soon as possible.

FAQ and RULES for SUNSHINE HOBI FIC EXCHANGE 2020
FAQs & Rules
Here’s a list of commonly asked questions (adapted from Alpaca Jin Love Exchange) and a list of rules to keep in mind!
FAQs:
Q: Why a Sunshine Hobi Fic Exchange? -Two reasons: 1. To celebrate Hoseok’s birthday. 2. To show appreciation in light of v-live moment that broke all our hearts, but especially Hobi’s. This exchange will be hosted, on AO3, and will be anonymous until author reveals.
Q: What’s a pinch-hitter? - A pinch hitter is someone who writes a story last minute, in the place of another author who has dropped out due to extenuating circumstances. Ideally, this won’t happen, but inevitably, it always does, so the more people who sign up as pinch-hitters, the better. Sign up for pinch-hitting can be done on Tumblr (will be updated shortly)
Q: What are the requirements again? - You are required to submit at least one work with a minimum word count of 2000 words (no maximum word count) that complies with your recipient’s request (pairing + the prompt provided). You may combine prompts and include multiple pairings in your gift fic, so long as the final fic does not violate any of your recipient’s guidelines for the story (ex. no smut, no gore, etc.). Remember Bangtan pairings only.
Q: What are the deadlines? - Sign-ups close on December 31th or once we reach 30 sign-ups (whichever comes first. Assignments will be sent by January 7th to the email you provide in the sign-up form. The rest of the important dates are as follows:
Sign-ups open: Saturday, December 7, 2019 Sign-ups close: Tuesday, December 31, 2019 Pinch-hitter sign-up: Wednesday, January 1, 2020 Assignments sent: Tuesday, January 7, 2020
Header check-in: Sunday, January 26, 2020 Check-in #2: Sunday, February 23, 2020 (500-word minimum) **Dropout deadline: Sunday, February 23, 2020 Final submission due: Sunday, March 15, 2020
Start of posting: Sunday, March 22, 2020 Author Reveal: Monday, April 6, 2020 (subject to change depending on the number of fics received)
Q: I love all my recipient’s prompts! Can I write more than one fic for him/her? - Certainly! The minimum requirement is to write at least one prompt, so you can fulfill all your recipient’s requests if you want to; either in one fic, or several fics.
Q: Does the story have to be from Hoseok’s perspective? - Not necessarily, the POV can be anyone, However, Hoseok does have to be a main character in the story, since the exchange is all about giving him some love.
Q: I want to write some crossover fics or characters who aren’t from Bangtan as main characters. Is that allowed? - Yes, but you are limited to two, just so this remains a Bangtan fic exchange! However, there is no limit on minor characters.
Q: What is a header check-in? A header check-in is a midway checkup to see that you’ve made some progress in your fic and are close to having something ready for your recipient, even if it isn’t done yet. It looks a bit like this. We’ll send an email a few days before the check-in, as a reminder. This does not have to be final.
Rules:
1) Before signing up, make sure you have time to produce one piece of fiction for another individual; this is a story exchange, no freebies allowed.
2) Your work must be completed by the deadline. If you wish to add to the world you’ve created at a later date in the form of a sequel, prequel, or companion piece, feel free to do so, but the work you submit for this exchange must have an ending and be able to stand on its own.
3) If you miss a check-in and we do not hear from you via email within 3 days, you will be dropped from the exchange and your prompts will be transferred to a pinch hitter. Don’t worry, we’ll make every effort to contact you before this happens.
4) Please respond promptly to any emails we send you. If we lose contact with you, you will be dropped from the exchange and your prompts will be transferred to a pinch hitter.
5) Please don’t talk about who you received. This means not discussing the prompts, stories, or recipients on public platforms and restricting contact to private messaging. It is a-okay to talk to your recipient, if you wish, just don’t mention the fic.
6) If you have any questions about the prompts you receive, please contact one of the admins through email ([email protected]) or through a direct message on Twitter (@sunshinehobiex) and we will contact your recipient for you.
7) Member/member pairings only. Member/reader and member/original character pairings are not allowed. Original characters and cross-band members are allowed as secondary characters only.
8) All works must be a minimum of 2000 words, no maximum word count (feel free to write a novel).

Biden Admits Plagiarism In School But Says It Was Not 'Malevolent'
Biden Admits Plagiarism In School But Says It Was Not 'Malevolent' In order to make it a hit, you may need to do a lot of research how to write it in a correct way. The common faculty time period paper should be between 5 and seven pages. My analysis paper was of fantastic quality, as all the time. If you are determined and focused sufficient, you'll be able to write nice term papers all by yourselves. You cannot neglect your term paper because it carries a significant quantity of weight that may both offer you an excellent grade or destroy it! So, we hope you understand what's a term paper now and how one can write a great one. I obtained my time period paper throughout the deadline and paid an excellent worth for it. This is perhaps the tenth time I am ordering from them, and they have not failed me not once! Once you understand how you’re going to method the subject, then you can start drafting. It goes with out saying one of the simplest ways to write a paper is to offer your self enough time to outline, draft, and edit. Take heed of these greatest suggestions and methods to arrange your thoughts and get your thesis on paper as fast as attainable. For whatever purpose, you find yourself needing to put in writing a complete analysis paper in a really brief period of time. While procrastination isn’t perfect, extenuating circumstances might have triggered your timeline to get pushed again. It is mandatory that the paper must be distinctive – plagiarism just isn't allowed. Some college students walked a long way filled with ups and downs when writing their term paper. The benefit of this kind of experience is that you understand what you probably did proper and what you'd better change in your research writing process. If you need to share your secrets of success make sure to get in contact with us. Writing a term paper is an significant task for any academic pupil. By definition, a time period paper is a sort of analysis-based mostly writing task that a scholar has to submit to his or her teacher on the end of an academic time period. Typically, a student tries to debate elaborately on a topic that was assigned to him or her. The topic might be an occasion description, a case study, a concept, or an argument. Those pages often include a minimum of two paragraphs per page. The paragraphs must be written within the typical essay style with topic sentences, supporting particulars, examples, and transitions. The sections in the project ought to include an introduction, background data, thesis supporting part, opposing arguments, and conclusion. These paragraphs have specific functions and lengths, too. But plagiarism––representing any work as your individual when it’s not––is rarely the best alternative. The final thing most faculty college students want to do after submitting an essay is to rewrite it. But you’d be shocked what number of students lose the chance to improve their grades, just because they don’t ask about rewrites. Essays make up a big part of your grade in some classes––in most of mine, for example, papers accounted for 30% or more of the final grade. That means you need to spend a major period of time on those papers. Yes, writing an essay the best method is a time-intensive course of. And chopping corners is simpler than ever, due to the web. Students often confused between these two different types of papers. The first distinction between them is the time-frame – a time period paper must be submitted by the end of the semester or a term whereas a analysis paper may need months even years to complete. So, right here you are, on the lookout for how to write a ten-page paper or how to write a 20-web page paper in one night. I've tried a number of writing companies till this point, they usually were all horrible. On a advice from a pal, I tried out this company.

If you’re used to a micromanaging boss, it might seem like a dream to have a boss that leaves you alone. But too much of that can also be a bad thing.
BY DINA SMITH
If your current boss is overly controlling or micromanages you, having a boss who leaves you alone and lets you do what you want might sound heavenly. But my experience coaching senior leaders with absentee bosses (and research on the topic) says otherwise. An absentee boss can lead to feelings of alienation, job dissatisfaction, and stress.
HOW ABSENTEE BOSSES HURTS EMPLOYEES
Take Rob, a managing director at a top-tier global professional services firm. Rob’s boss, a powerful partner at the firm, provided Rob with no direction or guidance when it came to his work or career. In addition, he didn’t respond to his emails or calls and provided no feedback to Rob other than an occasional verbal “lashing.” Unsurprisingly, this left Rob dissatisfied, managing his teams in the dark, and deeply concerned about how to make it to the next level in his career.
Another client, Jana, served as the global head of a business unit within one of the world’s largest financial institutions. Her business unit was part of a recent acquisition, and her formerly supportive boss, concerned about his standing in the new company, shut her out and now appeared to be threatened by her. He became unresponsive and created barriers to her integration within the new company, disinviting her from meetings where she should have played a substantial role. He also attempted to restrict her travel to network with other leaders at the company.
Sadly, Rob and Jana are not exceptions. A 2015 poll of 1,000 working adults revealed that eight of the nine top management offenses had to do with what their leaders were not doing, rather than what they were doing. Absentee bosses represent the extreme and worst of laissez-faire leadership. But managing up when your boss is effectively absent presents a unique dilemma.
Here are 5 strategies that can help you do just that.
1. DETERMINE IF IT’S JUST YOU
Talk with peers to see what their experience has been with your manager. You may find that they feel the same way you do. Is it possible that there are extenuating circumstances that have contributed to their behaviors? It doesn’t solve the problem of a missing boss, but it can help make a challenging situation feel easier if you see that it’s not personal—as it did for Rob. And if you do discover it’s just you, this is good information.
2. MAKE CLEAR, SPECIFIC REQUESTS TO YOUR BOSS
Whenever Rob needed to catch his boss’s attention, he’d send an email with “RESPONSE REQUIRED” in all caps in the subject line. He would make an explicit time-bound request for the support he needed. Here’s an example of what he would say: “I need you to review and approve this contract/presentation by Friday or we will not meet the client’s deadline.”
You’ll also need to be persistent in your follow-up. Don’t expect to stop at just one email. Be opportunistic about stating the case for what you need when you happen to see your boss. This may seem extremely frustrating, but it beats the alternative of having their absenteeism impede your ability to make progress and deliver results.
3. STEP INTO THE VOID
Nature hates a vacuum, so see how you can use this opportunity to step into a higher level of responsibility and hone your leadership skills. As you step up to lead, keep your boss informed so that you can make decisions to keep moving ahead. Email is your friend here. For example, Jana would let her boss know: “I will be moving forward with this decision on Monday unless I hear from you that you prefer another course of action.” Or: “I saw that this was a problem and I am planning on addressing it with a sub-team later this week. Let me know if you have any concerns and/or thoughts you would like us to consider.”
4. DEVELOP YOUR INTERNAL NETWORK
Work on your internal relationships. When you have mentors or sponsors at the company, you’re much more likely to hear about other potential opportunities (and have advocates when the time comes). Rob developed strategies to develop and deepen his network. Through these efforts, he created a large circle of allies—including a mentor and two sponsors. This helped connect Rob to additional opportunities within the firm and gained him strong support at the top to lobby for his career advancement.
5. BE PREPARED TO LOOK ELSEWHERE
Quitting when you have a bad boss can be hard for many reasons. But if you’ve done what you can to salvage the situation, it may be time to look for opportunities elsewhere.
Lynda Gratton, professor at the London Business School, recommends employees ask themselves two questions: “Am I working at a place that will keep me healthy? Am I working at a place that will help me learn?” Use these questions as a litmus test: If you can’t check both those boxes in your current situation, you may be best served by finding someplace elsewhere you can. Ultimately, Jana concluded it would be best to move on and is now happily working at a new organization with a more supportive and engaged boss.
If you find yourself with an absentee boss, the unfortunate truth is that it will be on you to make the situation better for yourself. In the corporate world, those who get promoted to leadership positions aren’t always suited to managing people. Hoping your boss will change will likely be a waste of time.
Accept your feelings about the situation, and drum up the energy to employ the above strategies to succeed in your current role. And if that doesn’t work, put your energy toward looking for a position that will give you the opportunity to thrive.

The Cost of Filing or Paying Your Taxes Late
All too often, the April 15th federal tax return deadline arrives sooner than expected – causing frustration and anxiety as you scramble to get everything together at the last minute. Yes, a six-month extension is available from the IRS which defers your tax return filing deadline until October 15th. However, taxpayers will still be responsible for paying late penalties on the unpaid tax that was due earlier in the year – as well as any unpaid taxes from prior years. The bottom line is, extension or not, failure to file and pay your taxes on time can be a very costly decision!
Filing on Time
If you don't file your tax return by the April 15th deadline and fail to request an extension, you will be assessed a penalty. For every month or fraction of a month your tax return is late, you will be charged 5% of the net amount that you owe for the year. The maximum penalty you can be charged is 25% of the amount owed. At 5% per month, the maximum penalty would be reached after 5 months.
If you filed within the original or deferred tax deadline, there would be no late filing penalty. But let’s say you filed seven months past the deferred deadline and owed a tax bill of $50,000. You would end up having to pay a penalty of 25%, or $12,500, in addition to the $50,000 you already owed. That’s no small chunk of change!
Paying on Time
Section 6651(a)(2) of the federal tax code specifies the deadline to actually pay your tax liability due for the year. If you fail to pay the balance owed for the year, you will be subject to a penalty of 0.5% for every month or fraction of a month that the tax payment is outstanding. The total penalty is capped at 25% of the total tax due but that penalty will keep mounting every month until you reach the maximum penalty (in about 50 months).
Since there is no extension for paying your tax bill after April 15th, if you can't file on time, you should pay the amount you estimate will be due along with your extension filed no later than April 15th. Failure to pay also applies to outstanding back taxes from every year, so small fees can quickly turn into very large amounts.
Applying Late Penalties
If you file after the April 15th deadline and you pay your taxes late, you will be charged both the late filing and late payment penalties for each month or fraction of a month they are late. Fortunately, if you are subject to both penalties simultaneously in any given month, the IRS grants a reduced late filing penalty of 4.5% (5% - 0.5%) for that month only. The maximum penalty amount still stands at 25% for each of the two violations.
If you delay paying the tax owed and accrue the maximum penalties for both, you can be liable for a combined 47.5% (25% + 22.5%) in late fees. Using our example above, if $50,000 in tax is due plus the maximum late penalty fees, that would amount to a total penalty of $23,750 or $73,750 in taxes owed!
Extenuating Circumstances
There are extenuating circumstances the IRS recognizes as legitimate reasons or “reasonable cause” for not filing by the deadline. These are:
The death or serious illness of the taxpayer or a member of the taxpayer’s immediate family when that taxpayer had sole authority to file the tax return
The destruction of the taxpayer’s business records or place of business by fire or other casualty
The unavoidable absence of the taxpayer responsible for filing the return or inability to obtain the necessary records
The reliance by the taxpayer on erroneous written IRS advice
Remedial Actions
The best thing to do is file your taxes and pay the amount due by the filing date. That means, apart from extenuating circumstances, the tax owed is due to be paid by April 15th. If it’s not possible to pay the full amount there are a few options:
Set up a payment plan
In a few special cases, you might be able to make an offer for a settlement, or Offer in Compromise
In severe cases where you have far too much debt, including tax debt, you might have to file for bankruptcy
It's important you review all IRS notices and bills in detail. Inaction on your part to file and/or pay your taxes could result in a tax levy where the IRS can seize your assets in lieu of payment for back taxes. The IRS can even garnish your wages in order to recover a tax debt, leaving you with only enough to support basic living necessities.
William D. Truax, E.A. and his friendly team of licensed tax preparers have been helping individuals manage their tax payments and penalties for over 30 years. He is licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS and is also a member of the Bar of the United States Tax Court.

PART B – Short-Answer Questions (Total Marks 75)
In answering the questions in this part, you may assume the existence of any standard data entry classes you typically use, such as Scanner.
Question 1 (25 marks)
(a) (Computing x) Approximate the value of a quantity x using the following series:
x = 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4+....+1/n where n is a positive integer. The value of n should be passed to the
method.
Write a java method that calculates and displays the value of x for n (for example n = 1000). [7 marks]
(Area of regular polygon) A regular polygon is an n-sided polygon in which all sides are of the same length and all angles have the same degree (i.e., the polygon is both equilateral and equiangular). The formula for computing the area of a regular polygon is
where n is the number of sides and s is the side of the polygon.
Write a Java method that returns the area of a regular polygon using the following header:
public static double area(int n, double side).
(Hints: You may need Math.tan() function and Math.PI for area calculations.)
[9 marks]
(c) (Rectangle class) Design a class to represent a rectangle. The class is specified as follows:
Two double data fields named width and height hold the width and height of the rectangle. The default values are 1 for both width and height.
A no-arg constructor creates a default rectangle.
Getter and setter methods are provided for all data fields.
Accessor methods return the area and the perimeter. [9 marks]
Question 2 (25 marks)
(a) Write the code for an Employee class, which has the following fields:
private String name;
private double salary;
Your class should contain the following:
Provide a constructor to set the employee’s name using a passed argument and also to set the salary to $0.
Provide a constructor that accepts arguments to set the employee’s name and salary. The salary should be set using the mutator method for salary described below.
Provide a mutator (i.e. setter) method for the salary that ensures the salary remains within the inclusive range $0 to $100,000. If an attempt is made to set a salary outside this range the current salary will not be changed.
Provide accessor (i.e. getter) methods for the name and for the salary. (15 marks)
(b) Write a program, called TestEmployee.java, to do the following:
Create an employee object referenced by emp1, using the name “Fred”.
Assign a salary of $45,000 for employee “Fred”.
Create an employee object referenced by emp2, using the name “Sue” and assigns her a salary of $55,000, all in the one statement.
On a separate line for each employee, display the employee’s name and 40% of the salary, for taxation purposes. (10 marks)
Question 3 (25 marks)
The following incomplete WordList class is intended as a collection class for holding a list of words.
class WordList {
private static final int DEFAULTSIZE = 100;
private int maxWords;
private String[] list;
private int length;
}
Here the constant provides a default value to replace any request for an illegal array size, the array provides a place to store the words, maxWords will record the size of the array, and length will record how many words are currently stored in it.
Write a constructer for WordList that accepts a parameter for the size of the array. The constructor will create an array for the words of the requested size, or of the default size if the size requested is not appropriate. It will also record the size of the array and set the current length appropriately. (5 marks)
Write a method addWord to add a word to the array. This will accept a String reference and return a Boolean value indicating whether or not the word in the String was able to be added. It should update the state of the collection object as appropriate. Note that a String object is immutable and can be added safely to the collection without needing to be copied. (10 marks)
Write a method findWord to find the first occurrence in the collection of a word beginning with a specified prefix. This method will accept a reference to a String object containing the prefix and return a String reference to the word found, or null if there is no matching word. The String class contains a startsWith instance method, which accepts a String argument and returns a boolean indicating whether the instance string starts with the argument string. (10 marks)

How to apply for special consideration
Academic regulations provide for special consideration to be given if you suffer misadventure or extenuating circumstances during the session (including the examination period) which prevents you from meeting acceptable standards or deadlines. Find the form on the Student Portal page.
Extensions
In order to ensure that students who hand their assignments in on time are not disadvantaged, and to enable me to comply with the requirement to return assignments to the class within 15 working days, the following rules about extensions will be strictly enforced:
Extensions cannot be granted for online tests, as these have to be done within a specific time frame, after which the answers are released to the class automatically.
Computer problems (such as the speed of your computer and the time it may take you to upload assignments onto TURNITIN) and normal work-related pressures and family commitments do not constitute sufficient reasons for the granting of extensions.
If it becomes obvious that you are not going to be able to submit an assignment on time because of an unavoidable problem, you must submit your request for an extension, prior to the due date, either by writing (email is acceptable) to your lecturer/subject coordinator or via the Request for Special Consideration form.
You are encouraged to make requests via email (especially for urgent requests), since the processing time for applications made through the online form can be a few days. Requests for extensions will not be granted on or after the due date so you must make sure that any extension is requested prior to the day on which the assignment is due.
You are expected to do all you can to meet assignment deadlines. Work and family- related pressures do not normally constitute sufficient reasons for the granting of extensions or incomplete grades.
If you apply for an extension, you may be asked to email your lecturer/subject coodinator on what you have done so far on the assignment.
You must be able to provide documentary evidence (such as a certificate from a doctor or counsellor) justifying the need for an extension as soon as practicable - but please note that if the circumstances giving rise to the request for an extension arise on a day when you cannot get documentary evidence, you must still apply for the extension before the due date and submit the documentary evidence afterwards.
Given the tight deadlines involved in returning assignments to students and putting feedback on Interact, the maximum extension granted generally will be seven (7) days from the due date.
Assignments received more than 10 days after the due date or extension date will not be marked unless the staff member decides otherwise. Items received late will be penalised at 10% of the mark available for the assessment item per day it is late (see below).
Note that for purposes of measuring lateness, the 'day' begins just after 00.00 hrs AEST - so an assignment received after midnight of the due date will be penalised 10% for lateness. This rule will be applied to all students uniformly.
Penalties for Late Submission
The Faculty of Business has determined that the penalty for the late submission of an assessment task (without obtaining the Subject Coordinator's approval for an extension) will be:
10% deduction per day, including weekends, of the maximum marks allocated for the assessment task, i.e. 1 day late 10% deduction, or 2 days late 20% deduction.
An example of the calculation would be:
Maximum marks allocated = 20
Penalty for one day late = 2 marks (so, a score of 18/20 becomes 16/20 and a score of 12/20 becomes 10/20).
If an assignment is due on a Friday but is not submitted until the following Tuesday, then the penalty will be four days (40% deduction or 8 marks in the example above).
Submissions more than 10 days late will be acknowledged as received but will not be marked.
Resubmission
Under normal circumstances resubmission of assessment items will not be accepted for any of the assessments required in this subject.
Online Submission
Assignments should be submitted through TurnItIn. Please meet with your respective lecturer to enroll in the Turnitin (If you do not receive any email from Turnitin for this subject).
Assessments such as Blogs, Quizzes, Journals and Discussion Forums are required to submit in the Interact2, unless your lecturer advises otherwise.
Please submit the assignments only as word document in Turnitin, unless your lecturer advises otherwise .
Assignment/s must be submitted through Turnitin by midnight (AEST) according to the date mentioned in the subject outline.
Assignments submitted in the RESPECTIVE FINAL FOLDER only will be considered for marking.
Postal Submission
Under normal circumstances postal submissions will not be accepted for any of the assessments required.
Hand Delivered Submission
Under normal circumstances hand delivered submissions will not be accepted for any of the assessments required.
Assignment Return
You should normally expect your marked assignment to be returned to you within 15 working days of the due date. If you submitted your assignment on time but have not returned by the return date, you should make enquiries in the first instance to the subject lecturer. If the subject lecturer is not available then contact your Course Coordinator on Level 4, 30 Church Lane.

PGT: How to become an Investment Banker
Students aspiring to land places on graduate schemes in the city should start their career planning as early as possible. With many of our Masters students moving to live in the UK for the first time, and many Masters courses lasting only one academic year, getting your head around the UK labour market, applications and the selection process can be a daunting task. This article aims to bring together some tips on how to maximise your chances of success, and to get you off to a good start in your job hunt!
First off, it’s important to build up a strong understanding of the industry – by getting industry information from insidecareers.com, by reading relevant articles on efinancialcareers.co.uk, developing commercial awareness through articles in The Financial Times and brushing up on financial jargon on Investopedia. There is also a wealth of information for students looking to break into investment banking on targetjobs.co.uk. This knowledge will bring a range of benefits;
It will help you understand the range of departments and roles available within an investment bank, and help you figure out where you might fit in. Investment banks hire not only investment bankers, but also has trading, sales, research, technology, operations, compliance, legal and HR departments. Different investment banks are structured differently, with different names for their respective divisions.
If you aren’t sure if investment banking is the industry for you it will help you figure out the answer to this question. Consider whether the working pattern will suit you (some departments within the investment banking sector typically work long hours, and other departments typically have a very early start) and whether you will be using the skills you enjoy using in the role.
It will help you build up a strong understanding of how an investment bank operates – for instance how it generates income, who its clients are and what impact the changing regulatory environment will have on the industry – all of which will sure to impress at application/interview stage!
Secondly, many more people apply to investment banks than there are jobs available. For instance, JP Morgan hired only 1 in 50 graduate applicants in 2016 (The Financial Times).
What do investment banks look for in their recruits and how can you stand out?
Investment banks typically look for strong academics. Different investment banks have different application criteria on both UCAS points and university degree grade, with selection criteria for interview often being more stringent than application criteria. Research by efinancialcareers.com suggests the average UCAS points of front-office summer interns is 530. Many investment banks don’t mind what subject you studied at university, but will look for evidence of quantitative ability and interest in the financial markets.
If you don’t have excellent academics, but there are strong extenuating circumstances (for instance, maybe you’ve been competing in sport at a very high level that requires many hours of training, or maybe you’ve been working to support yourself through your studies) this may be taken into account. Make your case strongly and think about how to sell yourself.
Spring insight weeks and internships in investment banks are a great way of getting a graduate job in the sector. In fact, about 75% of graduate roles are filled by students who have completed internships in the sector (src: com). Spring insight weeks are typically targeted at 1st year undergraduate students, and summer internships are often exclusively for penultimate year students (students in their second to last year of study – which includes 2nd year undergraduate students and final year undergraduate students who plan to study for a 1 year masters before starting full time work) – although some summer internships are also open to 1st year undergraduate students. If you haven’t got this type of experience on your CV, networking, off-cycle internships and specialist recruitment agencies are avenues worth exploring.
All investment banks will look for a strong interest in financial markets. In your application materials, try and demonstrate a long-standing interest in financial markets – for instance through active participation in a related student society, extensive reading on the subject, a relevant dissertation or piece of research, or work experience in the sector.
There are a number of organisations working to reduce inequalities in the finance sector – historically, women, BAME, LGBT+ and students with disabilities have been underrepresented in the sector. These organisations can smooth the path into employment in the sector, sometimes providing mentoring, coaching and networking opportunities. For example, Sponsor for Educational Opportunity (SEO) works with students from ethnic minority or low socioeconomic backgrounds. Rare Recruitment also specialises this cohort. Queen Mary has partnered with the East London Business Alliance (ELBA) which provides a range of supports to students studying in East London, including mentoring, networking, mock interviews and application feedback.
Finally, consider how you are going to balance your career management and your academic and other responsibilities over the year.
The application deadlines for graduate programmes typically close in the autumn the year before you start work. This usually means students are applying between August and January for positions starting the following September.
According to The Guardian UK 300 (2015/2016) the average number of applications made by students applying to investment banking positions was 25. Consider applying to boutique investment banks in addition to the top tier investment banks. Making this number of applications well (which means tailoring your application pack to each employer) will take a considerable amount of time. Build this into your schedule for the year. You might want to capitalise on the extra time you will have available to you before/at the beginning of term before the academic work load begins to build.
Make a contingency plan – perhaps there are other sectors that you are also interested in. Consider applying to a range of opportunities – vacancies open up throughout the year, in particular small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) advertise jobs throughout the year.
Best of luck with your applications, and remember – the Careers & Enterprise Team is here to help you figure out what you want to do and to help support you to make that happen.

This exchange will be hosted here, on AO3, and will be anonymous until author reveals.
- Sign ups close on November 30th or once we reach 30 sign ups (whichever comes first. Assignments will be sent by December 5th to the email you provide in the sign up form. The rest of the important dates are as follows:
Sign-ups open: Sunday, November 5, 2017 Sign-ups close: Thursday, November 30, 2017 Pinch-hitter sign-up: Friday, December 1, 2017 Assignments sent: Tuesday, December 5, 2017
Header check-in: Wednesday, December 20, 2017 Check-in #2: Wednesday, January 10, 2018 (500-word minimum) Dropout deadline: Friday, January 5, 2018 Final submission due: Monday, February 12, 2018
Start of posting: Sunday, February 18, 2018 Author Reveal: Sunday, March 4, 2018 (subject to change depending on amount of fics received)
A header check-in is a midway checkup to see that you've made some progress in your fic and are close to having something ready for your recipient, even if it isn't done yet. It looks a bit like this. We'll send an email a few days before the check-in, as a reminder. This does not have to be final.
Rules:
1) Before signing up, make sure you have time to produce one piece of fiction for another individual; this is a story exchange, no freebies allowed.
2) Your work must be completed by the deadline. If you wish to add to the world you've created at a later date in the form of a sequel, prequel, or companion piece, feel free to do so, but the work you submit for this exchange must have an ending and be able to stand on its own.
3) If you miss a check-in and we do not hear from you via email within 3 days, you will be dropped from the exchange and your prompts will be transferred to a pinch hitter. Don't worry, we'll make every effort to contact you before this happens.
4) Please respond promptly to any emails we send you. If we lose contact with you, you will be dropped from the exchange and your prompts will be transferred to a pinch hitter.
5) Please don't talk about who you received. This means not discussing the prompts, stories, or recipients on public platforms and restricting contact to private messaging. It is a-okay to talk to your recipient, if you wish, just don't mention the fic.
9) Please make sure that the fiction is edited by a beta or by yourself thoroughly, before submission. If you need a beta, please email the admins and we will try to get you in contact with someone.
10) Please try to stick to basics of the requester's prompt, though of course, creativity is allowed. Remember that this exchange is centered around Hoseok, so he needs to be one of the main characters.
11) All works will be posted to the collection by the authors, and the authors will remain anonymous until the author reveal day.
12) If you cannot finish your prompt in time, please contact an admin as soon as possible. There is a dropout deadline posted; please observe it. We've given you an easy out. Please don't let us know last minute or we may not be able to let you participate in future exchanges.
13) Plagiarism will not be tolerated. We will be running fics through a plagiarism checker to double-check, so please make sure to write something truly original.
14) Please be kind and considerate in your comments. Fan wars, member or author bashing, or ship wars will not be tolerated.
15) Only one gore/horror prompt allowed.
16) Don't forget to enjoy yourself and spread the Hoseok love <3
