The summer sun was not meant for boys like me.  Boys like me belonged to the rain.

For my first entry for Riot Readers, I read Dante and Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

A friend suggested this book to me when I said that I wanted to read more queer lit.  Even though it won the Stonewall Book Award in 2013 (and many other awards [X X X X]) and has been showered with near-universal acclaim, I was still skeptical because it is marketed as a “young adult” novel.  It is also described as a “coming-of-age” novel, which I tend to avoid, so I was doubly skeptical.  I’m glad I read it anyway, because the hype is well-deserved.  This book is wonderful.

The novel follows two Mexican-American teens, Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Dante Quintana, who become each other’s best friends.  It is told from Ari’s point of view and does not follow a strict plot, but rather plays out through vignettes, told from Ari’s point of view.  It is very character-driven and focuses on Ari’s thoughts, feelings, and interiority as he and Dante grow up in El Paso, Texas.  Ari is closed-off and emotionally guarded whereas Dante wears his heart on his sleeve.

Sáenz’s writing captures the confusion of being a young, queer, colored teenage boy on the verge of manhood, without being overwrought or melodramatic.  In fact, the writing for Ari’s perspective often comes off clipped, even terse, but with something ferocious underneath the surface—just like Ari’s character.  Ari, the over-it, suspicious loner with a chip on his shoulder, and the way Sáenz writes him reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye, but less cynical and more melancholy (a word that Ari uses to describe himself).  I found Ari’s sense of something inside him being off, of some feeling he has no language for but makes him want to cry and scream, to be an incredibly accurate portrayal of growing up gay: “The summer sun was not meant for boys like me.  Boys like me belonged to the rain.”

I won’t spoil the novel for you, since it is held together by only a few pivotal moments.  But I will close by saying that I absolutely recommend this novel to anyone, and especially to teenagers and even more to queer teens.  I wish I could have read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe when I was a teenager—it’s the kind of novel that queer kids, especially young queer boys and queer kids of color, need.  It’s both raw and effervescent, and the writing is just beautiful with some flashes of gorgeous phrasing.

Yo!! This is gonna be a Story time as well cause bitch let me tell you. He said something the TRIGGERED THE FUCK OUT OF ME.

Ok well back in high school it was the PEAK OF MY DEPRESSION ANGER ISSUE AND ANXIETY before i finally started therapy

And for those who don’t know what it’s like living with such a mental illness

YOU BLAME YOURSELF FOR EVERYTHING AND YOU START TO HATE YOURSELF

well at least that was the case for me.

Now during this time in high school my group of friends were having complication. Everyone was mad a.certain person people were being fake and two faced. I was told to pick side which i never did so I was being called fake even though I wasn’t talking shit it was a bad time for everyone.

And remember I was with some friends in Marks room after school and we had told him about the drama that was going on and I don’t remember exactly what I said but I do remember blaming myself for it because HELLO THAT’S WHAT PEOPLE WITH DEPRESSION DO 

and so i looked at Mark who had ROLLED HIS FUCKING EYES AND SAID 

“Jesus Christ V! not everything is about you. Get over yourself” 

and I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO UPSET ABOUT SOMETHING IN M ENTIRE LIGHT. MY HEART HAD DROPPED AND I WAS OVER IT.

Even my friends knew that was crossing a line a little

“Mr. that was mean”

and I legit just got up and left to the bathroom 

I got so angry that I punched the bathroom mirror and cut my knuckles. I even left a crack on the mirror. I was livid. anyways I yelled FUCK to self and then went back to the class where I covered my knuckles and got  stuff and left. 

I was so sad but I didn’t let myself cry because I was like FUCK HIM you know?

anyways by that point thats where the anxiety kicked in and I instantl thought he hated me and so I avoided him for almost 2 weeks. 

but it wasn’t all bad because he did end up apologizing for it. 

After ignoring him my friends wanted to stay in class after school to hang out because it was too cold outside and we  were not allowed to stay in the hallway unless we were in a classroom and so we stayed. I for one kept quiet and to myself. I even went to the back to do homework.

and so while my friends were messing around and drawing on his white board I can see Mark staring at me from  side eye view and then he FINALY GETS UP AND STARTS TO WALK OVER TO ME AND I AM FREAKING OUT. 

He stands over me for a while until I looke up and tell him 

“what?”

“Are you mad?”

“NO. why would I be?” I said obviousl mad

“Ok so you are mad at me”

*Long pause*

“Look im sorry okay. I know what I said to you last time wasn't cool. I didn’t mean anything by it. Im really sorry. You know I care about you.“ I still stayed quiet cause i honestly didn’t know what to say "Oh cmon you cant be mad at me forever. Especially with this face” He pouted his lip….he was trying to be cute…it was working I smiled and he noticed “Ha! See i knew you couldn’t resist me. Does that mean you are no longer mad” “Yeah i guess” i said. And then he gave me a nice long warm hug. And that ladies and gentleman is all there is to it.
